westbound 82 toward east san mateo bridge 11 minutes. it's fair to say we're looking like it's a holiday friday. i think a lot of folks got lucky to get a four-day weekend and this is sort of proof of that. i'll send it back to you. in southern california yesterday's 6.4 earthquake in the mojave desert. >> within the last hour, a 5.4 aftershock hit the same area and it is the strongest aftershock yet in the 18 or so hours since yesterday's quake. "today in the bay's" roz plater is here with the latest developments. good morning, roz. >> good morning, indeed. the shaking and the aftershock this morning, folks are expected to gather at the walmart in ridgecrest, that's ground zero for where they're handing out emergency supplies. they were lining up last night and expected to come back there again this morning. now some businesses have already begun the extensive task of cleaning up after much of their merchandise hit the floor when the 6.4 quake struck about 10:30

yesterday morning. it sparked fires at a couple of homes, gas lines cup tours and those whose homes were spared still have a lot of cleanup to do. >> all of a sudden, it was a large, rolling earthquake. everything in my kitchen hit the floor. picture frames started falling off the wall, everything in my bathroom came down off the shelf. kids, they're very scared. >> reporter: there's repair work also to be done at the ridgecrest regional hospital where some plumbing was damaged and some patients had to be temporarily evacuated. all that cleanup is on tap despite those continuing aftershocks and the fear is they uld cause even more damage. back to you. >> thank you very much. as we've already learned, with that strong aftershock this morning, the shaking is far from over in ridgecrest and the surrounding area. since that initial magnitude 6.4 quake, there have been more than 500 aftershocks and the number is continuing to rise. this time lapse shows the main quake and then all of the aftershocks that came after.

fighting in the court. last week the supreme court threw the question out and at least in the current form. opponents say asking it sometimes, asking if someone is a citizen would discourage all immigrants legal or otherwise from airport participating in the census. a desperate effort to save that home on your screen that was fully engulfed in flames in the south bay. firefighters say illegal fireworks are to blame. part of the busy night for firefighters around the bay area. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live in contra costa county with the latest there. pete? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and kris. the video from the san jose incident is something else, that fire issue as it relates to a fireworks incident. we want to show you that video once again. you can see multiple trees catching on fire, that incident taking place on the 1800 block of luke court in san jose. witnesses claim teens were playing with fireworks in the

streets which led to that home catching on fire. a man stepped into action, using his water hose to try to put out that fire. thankfully no one was inside of the home and there were no injuries to report but it was a busy night for crews around the bay area. jumping over to contra costa county, contra costa fire responding to 37 fires in six hours. a lot of fires overnight in areas such as pittsburg and martinez. they confirmed the martinez fire was due to fireworks and as well as five other fires. then in oakland, here is video from east oakland, illegal fireworks in that area, that continues to be an ongoing problem in that part of town on fourth of july. a long night for residents. we'll hear from some of them in the next hour. reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> i heard fireworks when i woke up this morning. people are still popping them out there. >> yes, it is not a good time for that. thank you, pete. new video from southern california shows a palm tree on fire. san bernardino police tweeting the video saying "this is why

aerial fireworks are illegal in our city. our officers are answering hundreds of calls for service regarding illegal fireworks. one team had to put out a brush fire earlier before it spread." bay area authorities are in the midst of a maximum enforcement period, that includes more chp patrols and in some cases dui checkpoints. tonight the peninsula agencies will deploy a dui checkpoint in redwood city. if you've seen or happen to see a blue helicopter flying through the skies over places known for high fire danger, we know why. pg&e rolling out a new fire prevention program in bay area locations including the oakland hills. high-tech helicopters are inspecting thousands of miles of power lines looking for trees and branches that could potentially fall on power lines and then spark wildfires. it is the latest phase of an expanded pg&e fire prevention effort and this week, the fly-over activity is ramping up in our part of california.

5:07. the steamboat geyser in yellow stone national park is approaching a record number of erupti eruptions. it's the world's tallest active geyser, more than 300 feet into the air. the steamboat geyser has erupted over 25 times, surpassing last year's record of 32 eruptions. the largest number ever recorded in one year. >> that's how hot it will feel later today. it's already warm in the studio. >> hopefully it's not that hot but we will see those temperatures going up a few more degrees. we start out in dublin, a lot of people up and out the door with temperatures upper 50s. at 8:00 we're at 60 degrees and at noon, 78 degrees. some mid 80s today as we go into later in this afternoon. there will be a couple of spots reaching 90 today like antioch and ukiah, and then for the south bay, we're up to 82 in san

jose. so it will feel a little bit warmer, temperatures peak tomorrow. i'll have more on that in a few minutes. vianey is tracking a couple of trouble spots on the road. >> right now the bay area is looking okay. fremont, concerned about the earlier crash i reported. the reason why i'm concerned is because it appears in addition to the two lanes being blocked there is debris all over the lanes. it may look like a solo vehicle crash. a possible spinout northbound 680 at mission boulevard so as they work to clear out the lanes we could start seeing some delays coming out of that as well. as far as your tri-valley drive times, westbound 580 from grant line road to 680 looking at about 19 minutes. southbound 680 from 580 to vargas road, ten minutes. your bridge drive times also in the clear. westbound 80 toward the bay

police officers on a chase in new hampshire. if you look at your screen, the stratham police department shows the officers jumping at the site of a squirrel scurrying across the floor. a few minutes later they opened the garage and tried to lure the little guy outside but the squirrel runs in a circle with officers scamperi ining behind . the squirrel takes cover and eventually makes a run for it. the police department says the squirrel was not injured during that chase. >> i thought it was a rat. >> i did, too. >> that would have freaked me out. >> a squirrel, okay. >> i have a squirrel story for you. i was in fifth grade these squirrels fell out of a tree and i picked them up and put them in this box and took them to school for show and tell and my teacher was like okay, and they took them to the aspca and raised them, let them go on a farm. >> you're a hero.

>> i got a gold ticket. story of the day. >> that is awesome. >> therefore i'm always connected with squirrels. >> you're a hard little nut. >> this is true. all right, for a lot of people to go outside, not nuts to enjoy the day. >> it will be great although warmer in some spots. look at the low clouds over the south bay rolling over san jose right now and as you get ready to head out the door, all of this will start to clear out over the next couple of hours with a cool start in the mid-50s and warming up, we'll be at 77 degrees at noon today. check out the seven-day forecast. it's already up at the bottom of the screen, showing some warmer air for today, as well as tomorrow with our high temperatures in parts of the inland east bay reaching into the upper 80s and low 90s. antioch today we'll hit 90 degrees. concord up to 88, while oakland stays at a comfortable 72 and ukiah today reaching 93 with napa today reaching 84 degrees.

so if you're planning to head out to the giants game tonight, there will be a free concert starting at 5:00, and then the game starts at 7:00 so it's going to be a nice evening to spend out at oracle. wear your hoodie, as a lot of the tourists from out of town weren't prepared with that little piece of information and then tomorrow, maybe you want to head out to the fillmore jazz festival, starts at 10:00 in the morning. mostly sunny skies, comfortable and breezy with a few clouds passing by. our weather pattern has given us really nice weather but about to heat up a few more degrees. high pressure nudges in and the wind flow around the high pressure always clockwise and we're going to have more of a northerly wind and then maybe even blowing offshore for a little while during the day, heating those temperatures up. as we go into next week, there will be a storm system moving across the pacific northwest, and so we're going to see a shift in the wind, and some cooler air moving in, starting on sunday, and continuing through early next week.

so our spike in temperatures doesn't last that long. we'll be up to 84 today in the valleys and 85 tomorrow, and then the winds pick up on sunday with a high of 76 degrees. still our natural air conditioning continues into early next week, but it will heat up again by wednesday into next thursday in san francisco, keeping it steady, just slightly cooler by the end of the weekend. vianey, you've been keeping an eye on the commute this morning. looks a little bit lighter though. >> it does, and we have been following that crash along northbound 680 at the mission exit because two lanes are blocked. still could see some slowing through there but it seems to be a single solo spinout potentially, so as of now, could you see some slowing through there. your south bay drive times, northbound 101 from highway 85, 18 minutes. northbound 28 from highway 101 to 85, 8 minutes and northbound 85 from highway 101 in san jose about 19 minutes. your south bay drive times no slowing through there, even though we had an earlier crash.

flight made an emergency landing in boston after a fire in the cabin. that flight was headed to london from new york city. several passengers posted photos to social media, all of them were safely evacuated after the landing. officials say the flames may have come from a passenger seat which had an electrical malfunction. how scary. this is scary as well. new video right here showing a police chase in southern california coming to a stunning end, when a wrong-way driver loses control. this happened wednesday right in carson. the chase begun in the south los angeles area reaching speeds up to 120 miles an hour. the suspect was speeding the wrong way when the car struck a median, went into a spin and then rolled onto its side and slammed into a parked car, as you see right there. the suspect appeared to be smoking a cigarette, talking on the cell phone, before a brief standoff. once he got out officers used a stun gun to take him down and into custody. a scare for visitors

enjoying chicago's fourth of july fireworks at navy pier. there was a stabbing and fears about possible gunfire that led to a stampede, in which more than a dozen people were injured. video shot by someone caught up in the chaos shows the immediate aftermath. three people were stabbed, all of them are in serious or critical condition. another 16 other people were injured in that stampede. on a much lighter note now, last night's fireworks show in new york city left the crowd in awe. ♪ >> you see right there the sky line aglow with serious light show. millions watched the macy's fourth of july fireworks show in person and on tv. maybe you watched here on nbc bay area. so that half hour show started with sparkles raining down from the brooklyn bridge. that was a beautiful sight, if we get to see that one. organizers said they used 70,000 fireworks this year, which took

six months to prepare. i heard they track that somewhere in the california desert as well. team usa soccer fans get ready. the women's world cup final is set for this sunday. so count on some red, white and blue and even orange, that's when the u.s. takes on the netherlands. this will be the first time the women's team have ever faced off in a world cup. team usa is heavily favored to win its fourth trophy, they beat england 2-1 in a tough semifinal game. the netherlands with a single goal in extra time to beat sweden. >> wah, wah, i mean it's like we're at the world cup. i don't think anyone truly believes that we disrespect the game or disrespect our opponents. >> keep pushing forward, ladies. the world has been watching and judging. remember the u.s. has taken some heat in their celebrations. some are calling them unsportsman-like, even arrogant, but i just say they're just enjoying that moment.

so these could continue for a while. back to you. >> all right, thank you very much, roz. the ridgecrest earthquake severely damaged at least three homes, two caught fire, one which you saw yesterday but a third was actually knocked right off onto its side. there were some tense moments as well when the quake struck for a family at a mobile home community, and also damage inside this woman's home. she felt the quake and it felt like it was going and going and going. she and her niece struggled to get out safely and at one point many items on the shelves and walls started just crashing down. >> it came at me and my niece and we went into the closet, i was shielding her. >> they were able to get away with minor injuries. we saw several other units with crumbled walls and other minor damage. >> people across the state felt the initial quake. this map showing all the reports the usgs has received. one of our employees even noticed a tiny shake right here

>> reporter: yeah, good morning to you guys. a busy nht for fire crews. looks like that fire in san jose may have been related to fireworks, that's what we're learning this morning. we'll show you some of that video of those trees, multiple trees catching on fire in san jose. that incident taking place on the 1800 block of lute court in san jose. teens were playing with fireworks in the streets, which led to that home that you're seeing there catching on fire. here are some of the witnesses describing the scene. >> we have kids at our house here, we were trying to rush to save it. i ran to the neighbor's doors to make sure everybody was out of the facility, out of the house so we're just really glad nobody got hurt and everyone is safe. >> i worried our house is going to get on fire, too, so i just grabbed a hose and climbed up the ladder, go on top of the roof and tried to spray our house with the water.

>> reporter: take a look at this footage, guys, of that man stepping into action, using his water hose to put out the fire. thankfully no one was inside the home and there are no injuries to report but this is a small sample of the issues around the bay area. we'll have more on that in the next hour. reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, pete. new overnight, one person died and another person went t jail after an overnight crash near mt. hamilton. the crash happened a little before midnight when the chp says a car went down an embankment. the passenger died at the scene. the chp said the driver had to be rescued and then was arrested. officers are not yet saying what that driver is charged with. a battle is reportedly brewing over the plan to eliminate 100 parking spaces on the great highway near san francisco's zoo. "the examiner" reports merchants on taraval are concerned if some

of the spots are taken away. it was supposed to happen july 1st but merchants put their foot down saying they got barely any warning from the city. city leaders now put the whole thing on hold, this is so they can have a scheduled town hall for next weekend. we want to look at our drive picture, and vianey, lots of green there behind you. it's been a little bit of a slow morning. >> plenty of green which for us means roadways are clear. i have an update on the fremont crash that i had been following so let's get right to it. we had reported or chp had reported, too, as well, northbound 680 at mission boulevard, two lanes are blocked. i'm happy to say the roadways are clear. they were also working to clear some bebrie so that's fantastic news there. you don't have to worry about that crash, driving northbound 680. let's look at the tri-valley drive times, westbound 58 from grant line road to 680 is the 17

minutes. southbound 680 from 580 to vargas road about ten minutes. take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, our favorite shots are the ones where we don't see a lot of long lines at the bay bridge toll plaza, but if you notice, there's a couple more cars out there today, compared to yesterday. i can't count them as quickly this morning, but i could yesterday. >> you know it's busy, right? >> a little busy, just a tad bit. >> i could imagine more people will be heading out to different places this weekend, because the weather is nice for us to get out and enjoy it. >> there will still be fireworks shows going on this weekend, too. let's kick it off today in monte rio with the big rocky games happening throughout the day and then the whole water curtain that they have and the fireworks show after dark. it's going to be a beautiful day. temperatures reaching into the mid 80s throughout the afternoon and at the time that the fireworks begin, we're cooling it off to about 73 degrees, and also there will be some fireworks at the alameda county fair, and this is the last weekend of the fair, so you better get there.

it's going to be at about 86 degrees in pleasanton, during the middle of the afternoon and then cooling down into the low 70s by 8:00. if you're planning to head to the beach tomorrow, it stays cool, with some coastal areas, only reaching 67 degrees. 77 for the bay. up to 85 degrees inland, but we will have some slightly cooler temperatures, with the valleys reaching only about 76 degrees and breezy winds. the bay reaching the low 70s, and 62 for the coast. that's a live look at squaw valley this morning. it is just beautiful, and we're seeing a lot more of that snow melting in some of the higher elevations, and take a look at these temperatures, reaching the mid-70s for today and tomorrow, and then by sunday, we're seeing those highs a little bit cooler in the upper 60s. for the beaches, we only reach about 58 degrees in half moon bay. it does stay mostly cloudy and a lot of times that fog will also produce mist and drizzle. if you want some hotter temperatures, paso robles up to

drive times are light for friday morning. i'll have a look at the rest of the bay area commute, coming up. >> thank you, ladies. 5:44 right now. in bodega bay, a deputy shooting is under investigation, it happened about 7:00 last right when sonoma county deputies responded to a report of a man attacking people near pelican loop. not far from bodega harbor. deputies say when they arrived, the suspect turned on them and one deputy fired. they are not saying at this point whether that suspect was armed, but he is also accused of stealing a car. the suspect and several victims were taken to a nearby hospital. in some u.s. cities this morning, there are fears i.c.e. may be ready to ramp up immigration raids. president trump recently threatened as much saying earlier this week, something may happen after independence day. later this morning in san francisco immigrants rights supporters plan to protest at the federal building outside the offices of house speaker nancy pelosi and hope to draw attention to what they believe are deplorable conditions at

federal border detention centers. the rally is scheduled for 8:00 this morning. this just in. the june employment numbers and the labor department says 224,000 jobs were added last month, which is higher than the experts were forecasting. meanwhile, the june unemployment rate stayed the same right around 3.6%. at the same time, average wages rose less than expected, and job totals for previous months were revised downward. the fourth of july usually means fun in the sun, maybe a bathing suit but in this case, there were bathing suits and also snow. not your typical way to celebrate independence day. ski season in colorado offici officially ended yesterday but before that, skiers decked out in red, white and blue made their way to arapahoe basin for a final run. >> skiing on fourth of july you don't do that anywhere else but colorado and that is it. >> a little bit in california, too, i'm just saying. first time the basin has been open this late since 2011.

>> i'm just thinking like when i eat two sometimes i'm like -- 71. >> we're continuing the celebrations today with the fourth falling on a thursday, a lot of people will have some things going on, celebrating with family throughout the weekend. here is a live look outside in san francisco, i know, the fog kind of rolled in, in time for the fireworks last night. so it's going to still be foggy throughout the day, and let's head inland, if you're about to head out the door in brentwood in the low 60s this morning, and a nice cool start, and then whatever you have to do, try to get it done early. by noon, we start to see temperatures in the east bay especially in brentwood start to warm up quickly. here is a look at our high temperatures for the south bay, gilroy going to see a high of 85 degrees. 84 in los gatos, and there will be a couple of spots reaching 90 degrees today, like antioch, but even though our temperatures are going to be slightly hotter, it's not going to be extreme heat, so that's the good news, and there's still some places

where you can cool off like half moon bay. we're up to 77 in palo alto and san francisco staying foggy, cool and breezy with those winds coming in from the west at about 15 to 20 miles per hour. then for the north bay, it will feel slightly hotter in ukiah, reaching 93 degrees while napa will see a high of 84 degrees. also cool out there at oracle park in time for the game tonight, but before the game, if you get there early, you can enjoy some free live music and you don't even need tickets for the game. so it's going to be a nice evening out there in san francisco, with mostly cloudy skies. we're going to start to see some changes here, headed into the weekend, getting a little bit warmer today and tomorrow, but then cooling down on sunday, as our winds shift and our natural air conditioning returns. that's because of a storm system that will bring in more rain for the pacific northwest. we're not going to see any rain but we'll have cooler temperatures to start next week, before we see more changes

ahead. we're still on the temperature roller coaster today, up today, town for sunday and back up by the end of next week. san francisco holding steady. we'll get slightly warmer headed toward next thursday. vianey is tracking the roads. looks like a lot of green. >> it is so quiet on the roads. two crashes cleared off the roadways. you're not running into any big trouble down to the south bay, the east bay headed into the city as well. northbound 101 from highway 85, 19 minutes. northbound 85 from highway 101, your' only looking at 19 minutes. nice view of the bay incline and we're noticing starting to get busier on the bridges but your tri-valley drive times going up a tad bit from grant line road to 680, the reason for that, that's where the commuters start to head on into work for those who have to get into work.

19 minutes through there. southbound 680 from 580 to vargas road only ten minutes and take a look at how the bay bridge toll plaza's doing. a pleasant morning for commuters, they haven't had any encounters with the metering lights which is always a pleasant sight to see and this is what i was talking about when i mentioned the commuters. dublin starting to get busy out there. we have slowing and it's just a regular morning pattern, not because of any accidents which is always good to hear. hopefully everybody continues to drive safe. we have to make it into the weekend. let's do so in a safe way. i'll send it back to you. >> thanks, vianey. first, happening now, a helicopter carrying seven americans to ft. lauderdale, florida, crashes overnight, killing everyone on board. it just took off from grand cay island in the bahamas. billionaire kohl executive chris klein was among those killed. the cause of that crash is now under investigation. another scare midair, next

aftermath. three people were stabbed, all in serious or critical condition, and then another 16 other people were injured in the stampede. two people are in critical condition after a shooting in pittsburg following a fourth of july fireworks show. police say that shooting happened downtown, with tens of thousands of people packed into the area. both victims were taken to the hospital in critical condition. pittsburg police are still investigating. 5:56 right now. on a lighter note, it was a much tamer fireworks event in new york city. last night, the fireworks show in new york city left the crowd in awe. ♪ the skyline was aglow. millions watched the macy's fourth of july fireworks show in person and on tv. maybe you watched here on nbc bay area. so that half hour show started with sparkles raining down from the brooklyn bridge. organizers said they used 70,000 fireworks this year, which took six months to prepare.

in washington, d.c., crowds attending president trump's salute to america celebration were thrilled as darkness fell there as well. that's when the sky turned red, white and blue, right behind the washington monument. >> beautiful there, that's where the bay area fourth of july celebration, people in danville were up to save their places on the traditional parade route. more than 30,000 lined the streets for the july 4th tradition which dates back to 1958. this featured stunt planes, buzzed the crowd and other planes flew in formation. this year's parade honors the 100th anniversary of the american legion. in san jose baton twirler answer antique cars made their way through the rose garden neighborhood. the event is called rose, white and blue parade. thousands of people lined the

streets here in san jose, some children and their parents even got to ride their bikes down the parade route and be part of that celebration because they like to make sure it feels like a little town. i love it. many of us were soaking up the sun in the bay area, while in tahoe, it was a snowy summer celebration. >> take a look at squaw valley, beautiful there. so the winter saw nearly 60 feet of snow and now months later, they still have solid seven-foot base in some places. this is just the right amount for the skiing, even on the fourth of july. right now, at 6:00, breaking news for you, new aftershocks. >> due to an earthquake, pull all units out from your station. >> more of a back and forth rolling motion. it was a good shaker. >> we are tracking overnight developments right now, following the strongest earthquake to hit southern california in more than two decades. the people in the region feeling more shaken even this morning.
