home off its foundation. you can see by the home next to it, it's leaning. while the quake was disastrous, it was powerful enough to have a real impact. this morning, many are still rattled in southern california. a magnitude 6.4 earthquake jolting the region on the fourth of july. >> multiple commercial fire alarms. >> reporter: the violent shaking causing this home to go up in flames. the earthquake so strong, it nearly brought down the house at a holiday event, terrifying school kids and their parents. the trembling also triggering a small disaster at grocery stores, tossing merchandise from shelves. the quake centered 150 miles northeast of los angeles, the largest to hit the region in 20 years. 20 million people in the earthquake zone, felt as far away as las vegas, arizona, and parts of san diego. the hardest hit, the city of ridgecrest, where the governor

declared a state of emergency. 7 miles from the epicenter, surveillance cameras capturing workers scrambling for the exits. >> we are used to aftershocks. we are not used to big earthquakes like that. >> reporter: at the ridgecrest regional hospital, the area's only trauma center, they weren't taking any chances. as a precaution, patients were transported by ambulances and air lifted to other medical facilities. in nearby trona, california, where the quake split the asphalt on this highway, no power, no water, and no help for hours. the biggest problem crews will face, infrastructure. geysers like these could take days, even weeks to repair. lester was in l.a. when the quake hit. >> this one was a series of waves. roughly the same intensity, but like being on an ocean. >> reporter: thursday's tremor followed by over 100 aftershocks, including this one, as the cleanup continued.

>> did you feel it? >> reporter: this morning, frayed nerves, as southern california remains on shaky ground. >> miguel, the last earthquake close to this size in southern california, of course, was northridge. that was more than 20 years ago. the immediate concern, obviously, the aftershocks. what has it been like there in the hours since? >> reporter: well, peter, he just actuay had an aftershock a few minutes ago. overnight, there was one that was powerful enough to send some people running out of their homes and hotel rooms. i know you grew up in california, peter. you know how strong and powerful these can be. >> vividly remember the one in san francisco, like you do, when we were kids in the bay area. we'll have more on the earthquake in the next half hour. now to a july 4th helicopter crash off the coast of the bahamas that killed seven people. one of the victims, a billionaire coal executive from west virginia. today, a community in mourning. investigators trying to determine what happened. nbc's morgan chesky is following this story for us.

morgan, good morning. >> reporter: sheinelle, good morning. chris cline was a businessman and philanthropist who made his fortune in coal. the helicopter he was on was leaving the bahamas, boundleavir florida, when it went down, ending the lives of everyone on board. this morning, investigators in the bahamas trying to determine what caused a deadly helicopter crash off the coast. authorities say a chopper like this one was traveling to ft. lauderdale early thursday morning when it crashed into the ocean, killing all seven people on board the royal bahamas police force says the helicopter took off from grand kay, a tourist hot spot, and was later found overturned in 16 feet of water the bodies of four females and three males were recovered from the aircraft billionaire and philanthropist chris cline is among the dead. the governor of west virginia, a close personal friend, tweeted he had died, calling him a wonderful and giving man justice jenkins remembering him on facebook writing, i am heartbroken to learn that chris

cline, his daughter, friends, and pilot, lost their lives in a tragic accident today. adding cline's selfless and generous support of programs throughout the state improved the lives of countless west virginias. cline, who once dated tiger woods' ex-wife, elin nordegren, is known for his generosity. he donated millions to charity, including marshall university, where he once was a student. they named their state of the art athletic complex in his honor. >> thank you, guys, very much, and thanks for all your work >> reporter: cline would have celebrated his 61st birthday today. unanswered questions about the circumstances surrounding this answer we're still awaiting to see if the ntsb will assist in this ongoing investigation.

residents wondering, is this the big one california has been bracing for. >> it's the biggest one i've felt. >> reporter: experts say no. >> this earthquake does not make the big one any more likely or less likely. >> reporter: the big one is the monster earthquake experts say is due to hit southern california its potential impact seen in this simulation of a 7.8 magnitude quake from the southern california earthquake center that's an earthquake 125 times stronger than this july 4th quake and 44 times stronger than the infamous northridge quake that hit near l.a. in '94. that quake killed 57 and cost $49 billion in economic losses seismologists say over the next week, there's about a 9% chance an earthquake larger than magnitude 6.4 could hit the region, and an 80% chance of at least a magnitude 5. experts say it looks like two faults were involved in

thursday's event, but not the infamous san andreas fault, which is more than 100 miles away the quake rattled los angeles, and many questioned why they didn't get an alert from l.a.'s early warning system. >> the shake alert didn't go off, which is really weird i checked it. >> reporter: authorities say the system did not fail, rather, the quake's intensity in l.a. was too low to trigger an alert there. the mayor of l.a., eric garcetti, is calling on his city to take the latest quake as a warning. be prepared. >> if you ask the average angelino, you're not finding 100 out of 100 having an earthquake plan for their family. workplaces often don't so that is a really great reminder that all of us have work to do ourselves it's not just done by, you know, the government >> reporter: and that magnitude 5 aftershock we just mentioned, well, it just happened a 5.4 hit. the largest aftershock yet as for the big one, experts say that each year in southern california, the odds of a major

san andreas quake happening are about 2% yesterday's quake did not change those odds sheinelle and peter? >> my goodness, thank you, joe fryer. think about it, the ground shaking underneath you is a vulnerable feeling. >> we grew up on the hayward fault in california. it doesn't need to be near a 6.0 something for it to shake. if this hits san andreas fault, populated areas, that's where it becomes a concern. be prepared for when the big one does come. you have the forecast. >> that's something you can't predict either it just happens. we can predict the heat an we have a lot of it. we have the heat out in alaska, as well. yesterday, we hit a high of 90 degrees in anchorage, the all-time warmest temperature ever in anchorage. today, high temperatures still about 21 degrees above average in anchorage, with a forecast high of 86 likely break records through the weekends with highs staying in the mid 80s. fair banks in the upper 80s.

for the in-depth today this holiday week end, a growing problem at some of our nation's beaches. we are not talking sharks. unfortunately, we are talking about seaweed. an invasion of the beaches is making them a serious mess, and the problem is only getting worse. kristen dahlgren is here with the latest we've all seen this. >> good morning. this potential danger is lurking in the atlantic, but it is coming ashore and fouling some people's holiday weekends. >> reporter: in miami, it's not just people crowding the beach. >> this is a lot of seaweed. like it's a lot. >> this is not what i was expecting. >> the last few months it has been smelling kind of weird. >> reporter: stinky seaweed piling up. such an abundanc 2019 could be the worst year ever already, the seaweed is covering some florida beaches. >> the seaweed is trapped in the hair. >> yeah. >> reporter: this post captured

the slimy stuff collecting off sunny isles. >> it is not normal to have this all around you when you're in the water. >> reporter: this is the scene in mexico, where beachgoers and fishermen have to wade through heaps of it before they can get to the water the state where cancun is located declaring a state of emergency. the problem already affecting tourism. >> this used to be beautiful, pristine, crystal clear blue water. it is not that way anymore >> reporter: what's going on experts say the seaweed is exploding, thanks to changes in weather conditions, the ocean's chemistry, and run-off from the amazon researchers at the university of south florida found a massive mat that stretches from west africa to the caribbean. some 20 million tons while it is not a bad thing in open water, it can be devastating to marine life and coral reefs closer to shore. once on the beaches, it can attract insects, creating a potential health hazard.

good friday morning. right now it's 7:56. we're taking a live look outside at the golden gate bridge. not as many cars as we normally see, and we're also going to see very low visibility in spots, as the fog continues to roll across the city. we're seeing a few cars with the windshield wipers on so there may be some drizzle along the golden gate bridge and moving in to san francisco. as we go throughout the day, it's going to be breezy, only reaching 66 degrees. for napa today, it's going to be slightly warmer, reaching 84 degrees, with antioch up to 90 degrees today, and in livermore, reaching 85, with the south bay up to 82 degrees. so we'll see some slightly warmer air today, and our temperatures will peak tomorrow, reaching 85 degrees, but then by sunday, our wind shifts onshore,

bringing in that natural air conditioning, some much cooler temperatures moving in, with a high of 76 degrees expected and then some upper 70s on monday as well. as we go through next week, our temperatures will start to warm up, reaching into the mid to upper 80s. so we are going to see some changes there towards the end of next week. meantime, in san francisco, no major changes here, but we will have some slightly cooler weather in the forecast on sunday, as the winds pick up, and we're going to warm it up by the middle of next week. a 5.4 aftershock the strongest one yet shook the same area of southern california where yesterday's 6.4 quake struck. the aftershock this morning happened just a little before, right around 4:00. go to our twitter feed for the latest shaker and what you need to know to be prepared for the big one. firefighters in san jose say illegal fireworks likely caused a fire that burned a car,
