good morning. breaking news. another major earthquake. >> we've got another earthquake. >> yeah, we definitely have an earthquake going on. >> a magnitude 7.1 earthquake rocks southern california. this one stronger than the first to hit that region on thursday. >> after shocks through the night. some minor injuries reported. multiple fires due to gas leaks. reports of collapsed buildings, plus electricity out for thousands. officials waiting for day break to fully assess the damage. california residents wondering could an even bigger quake be coming? we're live at the epicenter with the latest.

holiday heat wave. alaska sizzling record high temperatures with anchorage hitting 90 degrees and more than 100 wildfires burning across the state. >> the hottest day of all time. >> plus heat and humidity combine for a sweltering day with the heat index above 100 degrees. it will be sizzling in big parts of the eastern half of the country today. dylan has your forecast. a shocker. the young man who accused the actor of groping him against his will abruptly drops his civil suit with a hearing set for monday. legal experts now wondering if this was a confidential settlement that could lead to the criminal case falling apart. from nbc news, this is "today" with sheinelle jones and

dylan dreyer. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> welcome to "today." i'm peter alexander. dylan dreyer is here. we're happy to have my white house correspondent hallie jackson here. >> waking up to news of yet another big earthquake hitting our friends in california overnight. >> that's exactly right. the state of california certainly on alert this morning. we want to get to breaking news from overnight. the second major quake to hit california in two days. a magnitude 7.1. this one according to seismologists containing at least 11 times more energy than the first. >> here's the latest, like the earthquake that happened thursday. this one was centered near ridgecrest, california, out in the mohave desert. the quake could be felt from sacramento, to san diego even to las vegas. a series of aftershocks. >> california's governor gavin

kn newsom has called on the president to declare a federal emergency. >> is the big one on the way? nobody knows for sure. seismologists say there's a one in ten chance for another test. magnitude 7 quake in the next week. >> we will speak to a local police official about the most pressing concerns there. we want to start with nbc's molly hunter there. she was there in ridgecrest when this quake hit. molly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that 7.1 was unlike anything i've ever felt. the ground hasn't stopped shaking since then. dozens of aftershocks. officials say there are more injuries and more damage than there were after thursday's 6.4. they're going door to door. we might not know just how bad it is until the sun comes up. >> everybody okay? >> reporter: panic throughout the city? inside businesses and in the

streets. the massive 7.1 quake shook this town just a day after being rocked by a magnitude 6.4 shock on the fourth of july. the violent shaking causing this home to go up in flames. >> there's a house right there. you see that thick black smoke. firefighters working to put that out. >> reporter: many residents tonight sleeping on sidewalks after dozens of homes were severely damaged or completely destroyed. >> we're not going to leave. this is our home. but at the same time it's really scary to be in the house. >> i went and checked on my house and it was gone so i lost my house today. i don't know if i can even save it. >> reporter: grocery store owners had barely cleaned up from thursday's shaker when friday's hit. >> i was smoking a cigarette outside. i thought, this is it. the end of the world. it shook like crazy. >> reporter: some 3,000 residents in the area are without power. in nearby trono, california, the

quake split the highway making it difficult to reach residents. >> this time the fault moved that way. this time the fault moved towards the north. >> reporter: fearing structural damage, ridgecrest regional hospital, the only trauma center, protectively evacuated patients. it was 150 miles northeast of los angeles. 20 million people in the quake zone felt as far away as las vegas, arizona and parts of san diego. an nba summer league game had to be suspended. officials at this las vegas arena worried about safety under the swaying scoreboard. >> i felt the ground moving left and right. >> down in lafgs the quake was felt at dodgers stadium. >> i think we've got another earthquake. >> yeah, we definitely have an earthquake going on. >> reporter: while nerves are frayed in this area, we have a warning. >> we should be expecting to

record earthquakes here's for a long time. >> molly joins us live. you were already in ridgecrest. you were asleep preparing to file a report on the last quake that hit there. basically you were asleep effectively on top of the epicenter. what did it feel like? you're a californian, but explain that feeling. >> reporter: it's like nothing i've ever felt like before, it was terrifying. i was sound asleep. it was 8:20 and the whole room just started violently shaking. i looked up and i couldn't quite understand what was happening, of course. the entire room felt like it was on hinges. there was a really scary moment when you realize the entire building is doing that if you were in a room doing that. i tried to hold on to a wall but you can't really stand still because everything is shaking. our crew was on the third floor. our sound guy flew out of bed because of the force of the quake and then we kind of just ran out immediately.

the hotel alarms were going out. we got out of the hotel. people were really, really freaked out. >> i imagine that's true. stay safe. >> somebody else working to stay safe, nbc's gaddi schwarz. >> reporter: that's right, halley. no one has slept basically all night. the aftershocks have been almost nonstop. most of the town is in darkness right now. the power is out to a lot of ridgecrest, but this is a big lots and we've got some emergency lights inside of big lots so you can see what's going on. i just want to take a moment to walk you through what we see here. it is absolute pandemonium in there. you've got aisles that are completely blocked like this. imagine being inside of this big lots or a grocery store because there's grocery stores in this same strip mall while the ceiling is starting to come down on you as you try to make your way to the door. you've got debris that is

blocking all throughout. this was the scene in so many different places. again, this hit at around 8:00 so there were still people out and about when that violent shaking decided to start. so we saw it in restaurants, we saw those moments of panic, people pulling out their cell phones, people videoing what was happening. we saw it in grocery stores, in liquor stores. everything falling down. a very, very terrifying few moments there. then afterwards when people come outside they find themselves in darkness. now it is a moment in which firefighters are going around putting out different hot spots, putting out different fires that flare-up when a gas rupture finds an ignition source. firefighters are still out doing that. >> the two quakes have been a challenge for first responders

in ridgecrest. a few moments ago we started by asking them in addition to those aftershocks what are his most urgent concerns. >> right now we have a great unified command with kern county fire department. we're doing protective sweeps of the neighborhood. >> you mentioned people are bracing for the aftershocks. a lot of them don't have power. what's the situation on that? when do you expect it restored? >> i expect it imminent. they should have restored power to the remaining 800 customers. >> when you do turn the power back on, obviously that's where you can learn where some other problems may exist. what worries exist with that process? >> initially we had a lot of gas leaks. there are a will the of open gas lines and we are able to get on that pretty quick. when the tower comes on if we have broken wires, lamps that have broken in the house and

they were on they can introduce flammable materials. >> it seems what we've heard from our crews, this was really scary for our folks. have you had a chance to check in with your family back home, how they're doing and how they're holding up? >> yeah, it's been pretty stressful. i was lucky enough one of my family members were bringing me food. everyone is doing fine. >> the seismologists, captain, say it's a near certainty there's going to be another major aftershock in the next coming days or even weeks there. what is the message you want to share with people in and around your area. >> the message is stay alert. as soon as you feel a rumbling, we've had a few seconds warning where the environment changes and we know it's coming. get yourself to that doorway, get yourself to a safe spot and protect yourself, protect your head. >> that is good advice. thank you very much for being with us. >> thank you, captain.

>> thank you. >> that was ridge crest police captain. >> millions of people feeling the heat on the fourth of july holiday weekend, including folks in a place where you would not expect it to be a scorcher this year. alaska. dylan is talking about what's a dangerous heat wave. >> not something you think of when you think of alaska. we're thinking dog sleds but this year the nation's 49th state is stuck in the middle of a record heat wave. >> unusual scene playing out in alaska. >> the hottest day of all times. >> reporter: the temperature hitting a record 90 degrees this week. >> i like the sun because it's better than snow. >> reporter: the heat wave continues through the weekend with it staying 10 to 20 degrees above the 65 degree average. with more than 100 wildfires burning, some caused by lightning, alaskan firefighters are battling through the holiday weekend. >> use your experience, your knowledge.

keep your awareness up. >> reporter: in the continental u.s. an intense blast of wind from a thunderstorm known as a microburst blew the roof off of this home in iowa. hail and heavy rain washed out this area. in wyoming twisters. in florida streaks of lightning hit the sky and rain delayed races at the daytona international speedway. san antonio to raleigh. the combination will make it feel like it's in the triple digits. >> and it will be very warm in alaska. the average high is 65 degrees. with this ridge continuing across that part of the country, temperatures will still be running 10 to 20 degrees above average. anchorage will likely break records going into the weekend. also in the southeast we have not the heat but also the humidity. we are looking for it to feel like it's 108 in mobile, 102 in augusta. in the northeast we're looking for the temperatures to be just as warm. it will feel like it's 95 to 100

degrees. cleveland will feel like 90. going into next week even as early as tomorrow in the northeast, temperatures will drop. we're back into the mid 80s by tuesday. >> dylan, thank you. we'll get the rest of your national forecast in a moment. we turn to politics. president trump is not backing down in his battle over the 2020 census. the president saying he might sign an executive order to add a question about citizenship to the question air. nbc's hans nichols is in new jersey this morning not far from the president's golf course. hans, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, peter and halley. the challenge for the president this morning as well as his legal team is to settle on a legal strategy on how to include a census question. but the clock is ticking because those census forms have already been printed without one on it. before leaving washington, president trump refusing to

surrender on the census question. >> it's one of the ways that we're thinking about doing it very seriously. >> if the president considers his options his lawyers are playing for time telling a judge on friday that they know what they want to do but not how they want to do it. trump is interpreting last week's 5-4 supreme court ruling against the citizenship question as only a temporary setback. >> i have a lot of respect for justice roberts but he didn't like it but he did say come back. essentially he said come back. >> reporter: trump's focus on the kren be krus coming after his controversial salute to america's military might on the national mall in which he suggested there were airports in america during the revolutionary war on a technical glitch. >> the teleprompter went out. at the end it just went out. it went kaput. >> trump had previously mocked barack obama for leaning on the devices. he also responded to joe biden's claim that he was the boy. >> he used to make fun of me and

yesterday. and 57 degrees in san jose, and five miles an hour, and the temperature transfer in san jose and we started to climb in the 70s by 9:00 a.m., and topping out at 83 in san jose. and half moon bay is cloudier than the rest of the bay area, and as you know, the beach is going to be cooler, and not between half moon bay, but santa cruz is going to up to 74. and cool down tomorrow with the storm up tomorrow, and that is going to impact tomorrow, and the work week coming up. >> sounds good. and we begin with major earthquake that rocked southern california last night. the second in as many days, and this is even bigger and the magnitude 7.1. >> oh, my god. oh, my god. >> reaction that we are seeing from a lot of videos online and moments of the panic and fear

for many communities still shaken from thursday's earthquake and we are seeing the damaged walls and cracked glass on ground. the earthquake was felt widely across the state, and the epicenter is from bridge quest, and from the epicenter of thursday's 7.4. people felt that earthquake at sfo and reported to the control tower and the duty manager says when that happens, there is a process in place to check the runways for damage and the runways were checked after the 8.19 earthquake last night. and no damage found. the duties operation says that no interruption, but an officer says he was writing the report inside of the terminal when he felt the building shake. >> it felt like a cruise ship and i saw the blinds rattling back and forth and the cabinet

with supplies rattling and i thought, are we having an earthquake. >> he thought that it was a local earthquake and then quickly learned that it was relate nd to the larger earthque in ridgecrest. and we are getting reports from ridgecrest and so the web team, so follow us on twitter for those updates. our handle is @nbc bay area. and coming up a major bottleneck at sfo and the ride share issue that is causing the problem. we will have more coming up.

oh, my gosh. >> we are back on this saturday morning, july 6th, 2019. that is a rock slide near the epicenter of last night's earthquake. a frightening scene there. >> let's get right to the breaking news overnight. the second major earthquake to hit california in two days. a magnitude 7.1. this one containing 11 times more energy. 11 times more powerful than the first one. like the quake that happened thursday, this one was centered near ridge crest, california, near the mojave desert. >> they're still talking about it there this morning.

nbc's molly hunter was in ridgecrest when this quake hit. molly, good morning. >> reporter: peter, hallie, that's right. 7.1 was massive. 1 11 times for energy. so much bigger than the 6.4. people were really freaked out. the aftershocks keep coming. there have been dozens since that 7.1, and the first thing we saw right after that quake was a house fire. huge plumes of black smoke coming out of the house. we know the woman who lived in the house did actually survive but none of her belongings did. grocery stores, liquor stores were cleaning up from thursday's quake when this one struck. check out this picture, you guys, in nearby trono. a huge crack in the cement. we just spoke with someone from troen no who said the entire road to that town is really damaged. we're standing outside of the hospital. the ridgefield regional hospital. a couple of hours ago they

evacuated all of the patients outside. they were treating patients in the parking lot. they were worried about damage to the building. there was a lot more damage than thursday's 6.4. we won't know the extent of that until the sun comes up. >> seismologists saying the aftershocks could continue for days to weeks. thank you very much. dylan is back with a check of the weather. >> good morning, guys. starting off with heavier rain just like we've seen in the areas every day this week. heaviest rain falling across south central, nebraska. we have a frontal system across the northeast. we are looking at two areas where we could see some severe weather break out today. the first is back towards the eastern rockies. damaging wind and hail is a possibility. we can't rule out tornadoes. in the northeast we will see the threat of severe storms, large hail, damaging winds but a much

lower threat of tornadoes if any at all. it's all because of the cold front. these will fire up as you go into the late morning and afternoon. heavier downpours. out on the road keep in mind that the water could accumulate very quickly. that will continue to move to the south. as it does so, it will push the humidity and storms farther into the southeast by sunday. it will be a much better day especially as we go into the northeast on sunday with lower humidity and temperatures in the 70s and 80s. we're looking at half an inch of rain for parts of the eastern rockies and plain states. in the northeast we could see some areas with as much as 1 to 2 inches of rain. and parts of virginia and north carolina we could see as much as 55 degrees right now and live look in san francisco. we do have low stratas hanging out, but the clearing is going to be much better even for the coast and through the afternoon. right now in san jose, clear skies and 55 degrees. the clear skies are going to

make for slightly warmer temperatures, and inland areas can expect a good increase through the 70s by 12:00. expect low to mid-80s in the inland areas with hotter temperatures through livermore. >> and that's your latest forecast. >> dylan, thank you. now to a new twist in a story making headlines for months. after a young man accused kevin spacey of groping him against his will, this morning a. >> boomer: -- bombshell. seven days after it was filed the accuser's attorney saying they're dropping a civil lawsuit. raising questions about what happens next. >> reporter: a legal shocker. the man who accused actor kevin spacey of groping him in a nantucket bar abruptly dismissing his civil suit friday. this was a hearing in the high profile criminal case against

spacey set for monday. the suit was dropped with prejudice, meaning it can never be filed again. and legal experts say that's a big deal. >> that's a strong indicator that the defendant, spacey's team, reached out and settled this case for some undisclosed sum of money. >> reporter: spacey was charged with one count of indecent assault and battery. the son of boston television anchor heather unrui who was 18 at the time claiming the actor bought him drinks and then fondled him. spacey has pleaded not guilty. many wonder if the possible settlement of the civil case could mean trouble for the criminal case. >> if the accuser settled the case, everything depends on whether the prosecutors still believe they should go forward even with a reluctant accuser. >> reporter: at issue, the whereabouts of the teen's cell phone. text messages were used to charge spacey. now they say other messages were

deleted. court filings say the police notes show the phone was returned to the accuser's family. they say they don't recall receiving it. >> the accuser's phone may contain important evidence. if they claim they can't find it and it doesn't sound like a good reason, the court has a lot of different remedies it can impose, including even throwing out all of that evidence. >> reporter: spacey's career has tanked since this and other accusations of sexual misconduct first surfaced. dropped from his starring role on "house of cards" and from the film "all the money in the world" calling this criminal case a reckoning in the era of me too. this morning the future a little less certain. >> so it's still unclear if spacey will go to that hearing on nantucket on monday. his lawyers didn't respond to our requests for comment but have called the charges against him patently false. the accuser's father can be in

newsom has called on the president to declare a national emergency. newsom has declared a state of emergency for kern county. >> is the big one on the way? nobody knows for sure. seismologists say the chance of another magnitude 7 is one in ten. >> we have this quake covered from all angles. we'll speak to a local official about the pressing concerns in that community. we start with nbc's molly hunter. she was there in ridgecrest, the epicenter, when this quake hit. molly, good morning. >> reporter: peter, hallie, a 7.1 quake is unlike anything i've ever felt. the ground hasn't stopped shaking. dozens of aftershocks. officials are saying there are more injuries and a lot more damage than after thursday's 6.4. >> evacuate the store. >> everybody okay? >> reporter: panic throughout the city. inside businesses and in the

streets. the massive 7.1 quake shook this town just a day after being rocked by a magnitude 6.44 shock on the fourth of july. >> everything done. >> reporter: the violent shaking causing this home to go up in flames. >> there's a house right there, you see that thick black smoke. firefight jorks working to put that out. many residents sleeping on sidewalks after dozens of homes were severely damaged or completely destroyed. >> we're not going to leave. this is our home. but at the same time it's really scary to be in the house. >> i went and checked on my house and it was gone so i lost my house today. i don't know if i can even save it. >> reporter: grocery store owners had barely finished cleaning up on thursday's shaker when friday's hit. >> i was outside smoking a cigarette and i said, this is it. it shook like crazy. >> reporter: in nearby trono, california, a quake split the

highway. making it difficult to reach residents. >> this time the fault moved that way towards the south. this time the fault moves that way towards the north. >> reporter: fearing structural damage, ridgecrest regional hospital, the area's only trauma center, protectively evacuated patients. the largest quake to hit the region in 20 years. 20 million people in the quake zone felt as far away as las vegas, arizona and parts of san diego. an nba summer league game had to be suspended. officials at this las vegas arena afraid of safety. >> i felt the ground moving left and right. >> reporter: down in los angeles the quake was even felt at dodgers stadium. >> i think we have another earthquake. >> yup, we definitely have another earthquake going on. >> reporter: while nerves are frayed, a sober warning about future seismic activity in the area. >> we should be expecting to

record earthquakes here for a long time. >> reporter: now officials are going door to door. in nearby trono it was even worse off. residents are telling me there's no water right now, no power, but we'll certainly have a much better idea when it all comes from. a good reminder to get your emergency preparedness packs together. >> gaddi schwarz is live outside a store that saw pretty severe damage. >> reporter: we know people were hurt, we just don't know how many people were hurt. taking a look inside big lots. you can see how easy it would have been for somebody to be injured. the aisles are a mess. imagine all of this is happening. some people deciding to make a run for it, to try to get outside. you have aisles like this that are completely covered in falling debris. then over here you've got this whole store that is basically in pandemonium.

you have things hanging from the roof. this kind of gives you an idea what was going on, but there is nothing like seeing some live moments inside of all that chaos. people pulled out their phones and they were able to record from inside of restaurants, from inside of stores. giving you the sheer terror that people experienced in those moments. things have obviously calmed down a lot since that 7.1, but we are still getting shaken pretty regularly. it almost feels like when you're walking around, you feel like you're in an airplane. we're starting to see it flicker on and off. firefighters have been putting out fires from gas leaks. rate now firefighters are hoping for a little bit more light out here once the sun comes up so they can identify more of those trouble spots. guys? >> stay safe out there. thank you very much.

other news making headlines this morning. questions about how police discovered the body of missing utah student mackenzie lueck. the 23-year-old's remains were found in a canyon two hours away from north salt lake. lueck was last seen alive three weeks ago. 31-year-old ayoolaa ajayi is under arrest. her burned remains were found in his yard. they're not saying who or what led them to that remote canyon. trying to figure out what caused two explosions on the university of utah's campus. the first smaller explosion that happened in the basement of a dorm sent people running. then a very big blast fired shrapnel across the street seriously damaging two residence halls. the university expects mechanical failure. some suspect the boiler may have

caused it. kawhi leonard is reportedly signing with the los angeles clippers fresh off his mvp performance. leonard is said to be leaving the toronto raptors. his deal is rumored at 4 years, $142 million. in another big move the clippers will trade for oklahoma's paul george, another star in the league. that puts the ball in the lakers court. the cross town rivals could finalize a trade for the pelicans anthony davis as soon as today. a whole lot of shaking going on in california. >> if you like basketball, this morning's for you. >> you know what, i do, and it is. thank you. we have a little time for weekend morning boost. >> put away the handcuffs and pull out the wallet. the nypd comes to the help of a desperate woman. a shop lifter was caught red handed with stolen food in her bag. when she told the officers she

damaged walls and cracks and broken glass on the ground. that earthquake was widely felt across the state. the epicenter is 11 miles from ridgecrest, and close to the epicenter of thursday's 6.4 earthquakement some people felt the earthquake at sfo and reported it for the control tower. the duty manager saying that when it happened there is a process in place to check the runways for damage and runways were checked after the earthquake last night at 8:19 and no damage was found and the duty manager says that the operations were not interrupted and san francisco police officer says that he was writing the report at his desk inside of the international terminal when he felt the building shake. >> i felt a rolling motion like on a cruise ship and then i started to see the blinds on the windows going back and forth and the supply cabinet behind me started to rat ttle with the supplies inside.

we're back now with an important discussion certainly this time of year. it's swim safety. the topic is in the headlines after tragic drownings involving small children of celebrities. the daughter of olympic skier bode miller. more recently the son of country music singer, granger smith. certified infant swim instructor michael petralla. he's working with the miller family to raise awareness. families are taking their families to the beaches or to the pools, obviously swim safety is a top priority. there are stats that make this really an urgent issue for families. >> we know that about ten people every day in america drown. drowning is a leading cause of death for kids under five years ago. preschoolers who drown are in the care of one or both parents. the backyard pool is the place where it happens the most. >> just takes a moment for a parent to look away and a child to find themselves in the pool. >> water safety is critical wherever you choose to go. what are the places to begin for

parents trying to protect themselves and their families. >> we want to set up layers of protection. the more layers we set up the safer our children are going to be. that first layer is going to be active supervision. we want to make sure who's watching the child, whether it's mom, dad, grandma, aunt but we need to communicate that with each other so we know who exactly is going to watch them. >> by watching that means eyes are on them all the time. >> exactly. >> you have ways to protect your home, pool at home or even at the beach as well. >> so we want to set up barriers between the house and the pool. so we're going to talk about locks and alarms on the back doors. as your kids grow we want to probably change where those locks are. the next is going to be a pool fence between the house and the pool so that should have a self-latching gate. locking as well. >> a gate that the kids can't open up by themselves? >> exactly. . beyond that we get to alarm systems, wearables. parents need to know what is best for their child and their

situation. do the research. >> a lot of families, mine included right now are in the swim lessons phase. 4 years old trying to get it right. that means when we're at the pool we let her hang out in one of these. what's the problem with these? >> so this is probably the worst thing you could put your child in in the backyard swimming pool. all of these devices are coast ghaurd approv guard approved. they are to be used on a moving vessel whether it be a watercraft, boat. these are not intended for use in the backyard pool. these get your child in a vertical position which is the worst position. >> what's called the drowning position as you describe? >> that's correct. so we want to make sure when your kid's in swim lessons that they're in a self-rescue lesson, something that teaches them to get to a back float, rest and breathe. also, when you have thoeem in a pool, we should be holding them, playing with them, making sure. this allows your kid to enjoy
