and vibe for the film "hobbs & shaw." - aloe is an artist and a songwriter himself, so all of these sort of catchphrases that are great for a movie like this... - yeah. - he's gonna have to find the deeper meaning. in the song "same blood," in the melody, there's something that tells you there's more there. do you mind getting personal? boy--he's five years old-- e who's fighting cancer, a so i remember on the day that he's getting this bone marrow transplant, i walked into the hospital room, and, like, literally, the lyrics of the song that i wrote are plastered all over the wall. and this little boy named creed is in the bed, and i said, "i heard that you might know a song that i know." and his eyes lit up, and we-- i just got down, and we sang the song together. and i met his mom that day. she was kind of going through that cancer journey as a single mom. a year and eight months later, he passes away and... she goes into the hardest journey of her life.

and i chose her. i'm like, "you're same blood. i'm not going anywhere." and we just celebrated five years of marriage. - well, steve... [sighs] i'm so glad that you're here telling that story. the authenticity of what his journey has been like tells me the kind of person he is, and that told me where the song really lived. i feel real connected to this on piano. - awesome, awesome. - because it needs to have the gospel but... - totally. - with that element of, like... - yeah. - can i play you what it sounds like right now? all right, this is first draft. - ♪ this ain't daddy's money ♪ no, this ain't dumb luck "i'm just getting started" is c without being obnoxious. the lyrics are not cheesy, and it's really hard to do anthems that aren't cheesy. - i love it. - i'm glad you like it. i just wanna lean it more urban. where you had it production-wise was dope. it was alternative. it was, like, a little twenty one pilots, imagine dragons. and really, for me, i want it to be sort of juno synth with electric guitar, where it's just mean.

it is a huge deal for anybody--not just kyle but even a huge songwriter-- you get a song placed on a soundtrack like "hobbs & shaw," it is a massive, massive, high-profile placement. so every-- so the whole song isn't... [plays low note] two, three, four. one--there's a lot of one, two, three, four space. - so the song that we have, "call for a hero," we gonna tweak this thing. tvte has a lot of pieces for aloe, and we also gottange t make it right for "hobbs & shaw." - ♪ i been th los y ♪ the edge always got the best view, ooh-ooh ♪ - remember, don't say "ooh-ooh." - don't do that part? - yeah. you're giving a melody that don't have to be there. - okay. i think ester dean is incredible, and i'd be willing to change anything, obviously, because i respect ester so much as a songwriter. - what if you took the second half of the verse and make that the first half? tvte has almost six parts, and most songs really just have three parts.

you have the verse melody, b section, and the hook. that's gonna come around a lot, so we have to cut out three parts. - instead of... ♪ if you wanna be free - you know how to sing. just gave me chills. [both laugh] - bring in something low here. - yeah, yeah, yeah. ♪ i'm just getting started yeah. - like--almost like awolnation's "sail." - yeah, yeah, yeah. i love it. - and i'm gonna do pizzicato strings. ♪ dum-dum-dum - the song now has a more modern flair to it, so it kind of has a little bit more swag to it. it's gonna fit aloe's voice a lot better. - [vocalizing] ♪ ooh-dun-dun-dun-dun - that's dope. - ♪ we're the running-toward-the-fire kind ♪ ♪ we're the her ♪ we're the never-leave-each-other ♪ ♪ always-laying-down- the cover ♪ ♪ take-a-bullet-for- your-brother type ♪ - yeah. - run on like that and it'll feel real chant-y. - totally. - and then you go... ♪ you and me, we are both soldiers ♪ then--yeah, actually, i really like what i just did.

- me too. - i didn't even mean to. - to go more of, like, a gospel-y, church choir sound is crazy exciting. like, my brain wouldn't necessarily go toward that route, and as soon as shane showed me that direction, it--like, all the lights went on and everything kind of clicked. one of the thing he offered was, um, "same blood" and then "we're walking through the same mud" instead of "coming from the same mud." - i like "coming from the same mud." for some reason, when you say "we've got the same blood, we came from the same mud," i know wth thfoa hero? here i am." - mm-hmm. - "we got work to do." - yeah, that "here i am" just adds so much to it. - ♪ did somebody call for a hero? ♪ - ♪ here i - ♪ here i am ♪ we got work to do - aloe would like a declaration song. you know, "did someone call for a hero?" but he wants to be able to say, "here i am. i'm the hero." so we gotta make sure that whatever we say is toward where he's going. - right. - you know? and then it also fits the movie-- which i've always done movie music. i did "rio." i did "ice age." i did "lorax."

and it--it's a fun space, so the fact that we get to do this is, like-- for two things, you get two wins. you get aloe and you get "hobbs & shaw." - it is a win-win, right? - it really is. - exactly that. - meet the songwriters. - shut up! - our music for "hobbs & shaw" is our soul, and it's the lifeline of our movie. - ♪ don't matter where we came from ♪ - that is why we write songs. - this episode's crazy. - i'm really, really happy to say that i'm choosing... especially "walking through the same mud" and-- come on, you killed it. thank you so much. - oh, thanks so much, man. - when steve and i finally got to have some one-on-one time in "what drives you as a songwriter, because you have so much soul." and i want you to tell that story now. - okay, um, yeah. so in 2010, a friend of mine called and said, "hey, "i know this single mom. "five-year-old son fighting c "and, uh, a song that you've written is his favorite song. would you sing it with him and surprise him?" and i walked in-- and his name's creed-- and i said, "man, can we sing that song together?" he was like, "yeah." so we sang it. and i met his mom. we hit it off and began dating. after that, creed died. um... - wow. - and, um, we ended up choosing each other and falling in love and just celebrated five years of marriage. and i know creed's looking down, pumped about this whole thing. - wow. - that's a beautiful story.

- i mean, that is why we write songs. - yeah.
