backing down the first time. >> but they made this plea deal to craig's point that said we won't prosecute you, but that only covered the district in florida. is that why new york prosecutors can now bring the case >> yeah. if you're looking at this saying what's their jurisdiction, they have separate new york jurisdiction this indictment mentions things that also occurred in florida. >> one of the most stunning revelations to come out yesterday, and stephanie you were there, is that there were new photographs, new images. what prosecutors called trove of images of young looking girls found at his upper east side mansion over the weekend could that in itself lead to new charges? >> it's entirely possible if those are underaged photographs that that could be a separate charge it would be technically a lesser charge than what's in the new indictment, but it's the kind of thing prosecutors can later add as stephanie was mentioning. >> they also were very careful, i'll add, to make sure that they characterize those photos in a specific way and that obviously means they're still investigating them

>> they said young looking they didn't assert these were underaged girls. >> what about this idea the charges are being brought by the public corruption unit and not the unit that's usually tasked with handling sex crimes what do we make of that? >> there are a few crimes that are so particular or serious that prosecutors are assigned to just those crimes, and as you mentioned, the prosecutors who normally deal with these kind of heinous accusations of things involving minors and sex trafficking are not on the case, so that raises a question we can't answer yet, which is there some other part of this inquiry that relates to potential government corruption. >> and very quickly, the prosecutors are arguing to keep him behind bars. they say he's a flight risk. do they have a strong argument to keep him in jail? >> they have an argument because of the access to jets and other things, but his folks who have worked very hard in the past are making the argument that they'r prove legally that he wouldn't be a flight risk including waiving all kinds of rights. >> thank you. also this morning, there's new controversy over those leaked memos in which the

british ambassador to the u.s. called the trump administration inept among other things. overnight that ambassador was disinvited by the president to a high profile dinner at the treasury department, and eyebrows were also raised over a particular person in attendance. nbc's white house correspondent peter alexander has all that. >> reporter: good morning to you, president trump hosting that high powered dinner last night for the 39-year-old mayor of qatar with the guest list that included business leaders who were close to the president, disinvited britain's ambassador after those revelations of critical comments he made about the trump administration, but on the list the president's friend and one of the nfl's most powerful owner, robert kraft. >> reporter: last night president trump inviting a who's who of business leaders to a dinner with the emir of qatar, the leader of one of the wealthiest nations. according to a white house official, the british ambassador, sir kim darroch was

actually disinvited, his invitation pulled after the publication of leaked memos over the weekend in which the ambassador was highly critical of the president saying he radiates insecurity and describing his administration as inept and uniquely dysfunctional. this morning the president tweeting the wacky ambassador that the u.k. foisted upon the u.s. is not someone we are thrilled with, a very stupid guy, adding he doesn't know the ambassador but saying he's been told darroch is a pompous fool. among the 40 business leaders who did attend last night, a surprising guest, new england patriot's owner robert kraft who could be seen sitting a a table with the president. the billionaire businessman caught in a sting operation just five months ago at a florida massage parlor. kraft pleaded not guilty to soliciting prostitution and has categorically denied engaging in any illegal activity. days after kraft's arrest, president trump was asked about his friend's legal troubles. >> well, it's very sad.

i was very surprised to see it. he's proclaimed his innocence totally. >> the two men are long-time friends. kraft spending time at the president's mar-a-lago resort including dinner with japanese prime minister shinzo abe shortly after president trump took office. >> reporter: as for the british ambassador, the president said yesterday that darroch is not well liked within the u.s., but plenty of the president's aides and allies have socialized with the u.k. ambassador attending many of his parties over the last several years. the british prime minister's office saying ambassador darroch will stay in his post and that he has the prime minister's full support. savannah and craig, back to you. >> all right, peter alexander at the white house for us, thank you. another major story in washington, that historic flash flooding that crippled the nation's capital on monday. al's here with more on that and another big weather concern on the horizon, huh? >> absolutely, guys.

but look at this, deep water rescues going on all throughout the nation's capital yesterday. they got over three inches of rain. i mean, it was amazing. a will the lot of folks driving risking going through that high water. record setting, they saw 3.44 inches of rain, almost a month's worth of rain in one morning. first time they've had a flash flood emergency in d.c. we have seen since 1958 an increase in these heavy downpours, and especially in the northeast and mid-atlantic, a 55% increase in these kind of systems, so we're not done yet with that kind of rain. what we're watching now is an invest area where they're investigating this low pressure. next two days they expect it to become a tropical system. within the next five days, an 80% chance of that happening. we look at the two global models, the american and the european, and something's developing in the gulf and bringing with it heavy rain. is it a hurricane, is it a tropical storm?

still too early to tell. the european model brings it up in and makes its way into the mississippi river valley whereas the american model keeps it up into texas. either way, we are looking by sunday at seven inches or more along the coast. we're going to continue to watch this very carefully. thank you so much. now to the search for answers after the shocking death of a toddler. the child fell more than two stories from a docked cruise ship in port reuerto rico and te family is asking whether the cruise line could have done more to prevent it. gabe gutierrez joins us with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, this is such a gut wrenching story. the toddler using her young life on a family vacation in what appears to be a tragic accident, and we're now hearing more from the family about what they say actually happened according to their new attorney, the initial police reports were wrong. this morning the family of a toddler who tragically died in puerto rico is disputing initial

accounts from police that she slipped and fell from her grandfather's arms little chloe was just a year and a half old the family's newly retained attorney says shed loved to be near glass and windows to watch the action on the other side like she did at her older brother's hockey games the family's attorney now saying chloe's grandfather had placed her on a ledge by a window that had no idea it was open. >> why in the world would you leave a window open and an entire glass wall full of windows in a kids' area? why would you have that kind of hidden danger without any warning, without any sign, without any notice. >> reporter: police in san juan say she fell from an 11 story window of royal caribbean's freedom of the seas landing on a concrete dock. >> i do think there's going to be blame and significant blame on the cruise line i will do everything i can to hold them accountable for what appears to be negligence. >> royal caribbean says it's

cousin's wedding on cape cod the plane he was piloting carrying his wife and her sister crashed off of martha's vineyard tragically burying at sea the legacy of camelot. he was 30 years old. >> steven gillon met jfk jr. at brown university they remained lifelong friends he's written a new book, it's out today, it's called "america's reluctant prince, the life of john f. kennedy jr.. good to have you here. >> it's been a long time, what made you decide this was the moment that you wanted to write a book about jfk jr. >> welhile john was alive i protected his privacy like many of his friends, now that he's gone as his friend and also a historian, i feel like it's my responsibility to preserve his legacy i don't want john to be remembered as the sexiest man alive. i don't want him to be remembered as the hunk flunk the john i knew was so much more complicated than that, and that's the john i tried to capture in this book. >> complicated in what ways? >> you know, the famous photograph john on november

25th, 1963, he salutes, raises his right hand and salutes his father on his third birthday, i believe that moment, all the unfulfilled hopes and expectations of the kennedy presidency transferred to john, and he carried that with him his entire life. so john used to kell tell me hes two people, he was just john, just the typical privileged member of his generation, but he had a role to play his entire life, and that role was john fitzgerald kennedy jr., the son of a slain president, and that was a burden that could have crushed most people. john struggled with it at times, but he handled it with enormous grace, and that's really the story i want to tell you think of the kennedys, you think of public service, but with john his greatest struggle and his greatest achievement was personal his ability to deal with this burden that had been imposed upon him and to deal with it with enormous strength. >> and stay normal, which was so important to jackie. one of the things you write about that was surprising was his relationship with his

mother, the fact that he was close to his stepfather, closer than i think people really realized and then lost him too here he had lost his father as a toddler. then his father figure in robert kennedy, and then aristotle onassis. >> you think of the trauma that he experienced as a child, not only is he witnessing those, these events, especially the assassination of his father and uncle, but he's moving all the time he's moving from the white house, to another place in washington, and another place. within a year he's lived in four different places. >> what was jackie like in grief? people don't talk about that very often >> you know she had a difficult time, understandably so, and john used to say that she was emotionally absent for a while he mentioned at one point that she drank a little more than she should have, but she was struggling with her own grief, which was part of the trauma that john experienced. he experienced trauma through his mother >> you also write that he was

probably going to get into electoral politics when he died? >> i'm certain of that one of the ways i measure that is the way he referred to his father so john when i first knew him, referred to him as president kennedy. in the '90s he started calling him my father. thos la those last couple of years he called him my daddy. i think for me that was john finally coming to terms with the fact that -- >> that's kind of heartbreaking that he started using the toddler's words well into his life. >> that's right. but he was becoming more comfortable with his father's legacy and going into politics john always -- john's great struggle was to create and forge his own identity separate from that of his family and his father, and he did that by keeping politics at a distance, and those final years he finally -- he realized that politics was in his dna. he was talking openly about running for office when daniel moynihan resigned, there was a senate seat that came open, and john thought seriously about running for that seat, but didn't think it was

time, but some of the last conversations he had in his life he was talking about running for governor of new york in 2001. >> we of course know of his tragic and untimely death and those circumstances. he was married, there have been lots of reports about difficulties in that marriage toward the end i was surprised to read in your book that he had hoped to have kids and had even had a name in mind for a child >> yeah, flynn. >> flynn kennedy. >> yeah. john, that was one of the issues, one of the many issues in their relationship. john wanted to start a family. he wanted to have kids carolyn for very understandable reasons didn't think the time was right. she, paparazzi were horrible to her. they chased her around they called her names. john's best friend and his cousin anthony roswell is dying. carolyn would say this isn't the time how can we bring up john f. kennedy iii in this environment. that was one of the many issues they had in their relationship. >> you also wrote there was a time in your life where he demonstrated an unusual act of

kindness and generosity. >> there was, i mean, there are a number of times, but in that last week when -- before john died, i developed this tremor in my hand, which i still have. it's great for making martinis by the way it's kind of a pain. and i went and had a doctor's appointment the friday before john died, and the doctor told me i may be in the early stages of als, which is not the -- you never want to hear those words, and john, i didn't tell john he found out about it, and that saturday morning he calls me up, and i told him everything that was going on there was a long pause, and he said stevie i'll take care of you. and he repeated it again that's the john kennedy i want the world to know about, the john kennedy who was enormously generous and kind and decent you know, in the following saturday, roughly that same time i woke up and found out that his plane was missing, and i was helpless >> so much loss. >> steve, thank you, steve gillon thank you
