tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  July 12, 2019 6:00am-7:00am PDT

6:00 am
we saw the shark and another shark and found another shark. >> a pilot captures images high above the coast. we are live where the sharks were spotted, with what officials are telling beach goers. plus -- >> to be totally honest, extremely unfriendly to us. >> president trump lashes out at courts over the citizenship question, and decides to give up the fight. coming up in a live report from capitol hill, the president's new plan. and bracing for barry. we are tracking that powerful storm that could grow into a hurricane before it makes landfall in louisiana. when it could hit, coming up. "today in the bay" continues right now. >> and good morning to you. thanks so much for starting your day with us right here on "today in the bay" on this friday morning. i like the sound of that, friday. it rolls off the tongue. >> it's lovely. especially if you have good plans. >> yeah, and i'm marcus washington. we planned to have a good time this morning. >> that's right, i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia and
6:01 am
that forecast, you know, the hot weather if you're going to have it, the weekend is the perfect time. >> and it's also a good thing that we have some areas that stay cool as well. so it won't be hot all across the bay area, just our inland valleys. and so we start out this morning, take a look at that view. >> nice. >> i love it. that's above the fog, over san francisco, as the sun rises and i know in the city, you can't see any of this right now, because of the clouds and the drizzle. let's head inland to antioch and start your morning commute, going to heat up today, upper 80s by 1:00. we'll get a look at our microclimates coming up. and mike, you have a couple of east bay delays. >> and also the view from below the clouds. one of the east bay delays will be b.a.r.t. b.a.r.t. reports a minor delay. antioch line headed between orinda and rockridge, into oakland, ten minutes there, some sort of equipment problem. we've heard nothing else over the last ten minutes. the good news is the roadways even though there's a backup at the bay bridge, notice the fastrak lanes loosening up and the cash lanes back to the end
6:02 am
of the parking lot. minor backup, minor delay out of the east bay. we'll see this build over the next 40 minutes, south bay and peninsula they have a lot of work to do before we get slowing there either. back to you. >> thanks, mike. a live look in san jose city hall for you this morning. today immigrant advocates will be on hand there to help people navigate this weekend's planned i.c.e. raids. there are massive protests planned in the bay area and across the country. bob redell will have much more on that developing story coming up for you in the next half hour. after days of hinting that he could use an executive action to insert a question about citizenship on the upcoming census, president donald trump is now using a different approach. he said he's ordering federal agencies to use already existing databases to gather that same information. >> "today in the bay's" sarah dallof is in washington and this is really a new tactic. >> a new tactic indeed. president calling off essentially the fight to put the
6:03 am
question that turned the census into a political weapon. president trump backing off his bid to put a citizenship question on the 2020 census. >> the case is already in three federal district courts that have been, to be totally honest, extremely unfriendly to us. >> reporter: instead issuing an executive order for federal agencies to compile citizenship records from existing databases. >> knowing this information is vital to formulating sound public policy. we will leave no stone unturned. >> reporter: this as the president prepares for mass deportation raids this weekend, in at least ten major u.s. cities, prompting outrage across the country. several arrested in buffalo. >> abolish i.c.e.! >> reporter: advocates speaking out in chicago. in d.c., republican support. >> beginning to deport people
6:04 am
who have gone through the process and lost their case to me is not cruel. it's reinforcing the rule of law. >> reporter: democrats furious. >> it means moms, dads, families being torn apart. it is absolutely disgusting. >> it has nothing to do with the security and safety of the united states. >> reporter: new moves from the president prompting new ripples of fear across immigrant communities. and the raids will target some 2,000 people who have been ordered deported previously, but it could also involve immigrants who happen to be stopped on the scene. marcus and kris? >> certainly going to be a busy weekend, especially here in the bay area, where people have been dealing with this before. thank you for the update. back here at home, there could be danger in the water as you head out to the beaches this weekend. a shark warning for people headed to "today in the bay's" coastline. thom jensen is live in half moon bay.
6:05 am
with what pilots saw there, thom, this is unbelievable. >> reporter: i can tell you that -- good morning -- that this warning came after several pilots actually saw sharks as they were making their approach into the local airstrip here, which is just north of us here at half moon bay. they could see them from the air, as they made that approach, and pilot bart selby of san carlos had his airplane here at that strip, and decided to go up for a look himself, and he says what he saw was quite shocking on the water here yesterday. >> my thought was the chance of us seeing a shark are like one in a thousand, and we were up for five minutes, we found a shark. then we found another shark, and then we found another shark. >> i wanted to swim, but now i will double think about that. but it's cool. >> reporter: selby said he saw
6:06 am
at least four sharks. the san mateo sheriff's department issued a warning on social media, that great white sharks were spotted in the bay, although the species has not been confirmed yet. bart selby says he saw all four sharks between pillar point which is north of us near mavericks beach and the ritz-carlton, about five miles south where we are right now. this continued warning this morning just expected to be one of the hottest days this summer. in lyndon people are headed to the water for swimming, fishing and swimming. still a warning there could be sharks, maybe great white sharks and several of them here at half moon bay. live at half moon bay, thom jensen for "today in the bay." >> cool sharks to see but from a distance. thanks for the update. >> reporter: yeah, right. >> 6:06 this morning. the search is on for dangerous weapons stolen from an fbi agent's car in oakland.
6:07 am
a semiautomatic rifle, a magazine loaded with bullets and fbi jacket all missing at this hour. investigators say that theft happened wednesday night at the hagenberger shopping center across the street from the coliseum, near the in and out burger. the fbi is offering a $5,000 reward for the return of those items. and the top cop in san luis obispo is apologizing after leaving her gun in a restaurant restroom, which was then stolen. here is chief deanna cantrell. >> my actions were irresponsible and dangerous, and i'm so grateful that after our preliminary investigation, a child didn't find it. i was complacent, and that's something you can never be with a firearm. >> surveillance video captured the possible suspect who may have taken the weapon. here is a picture. the search for this man you see right here continues. these are not the only times this has happened. our investigative team has
6:08 am
reported before on stolen law enforcement weapons, to watch all of those reports, you can head to nbcbayarea.com and search "stolen guns." happening today, governor newsom is expected to sign a massive wildfire protection bill into law that makes rate payers share the cost of future wildfires caused by utilities like pg&e. the complex bill was approved yesterday by the legislature. it creates a new $21 billion fund for victims and about half of that money will come from utility customers. lawmakers say your bills will not go up, but critics say this is a gift to the you tilts. the governor who supports the bill says the utilities will have to meet higher safety standards because they can't access the funds. in louisiana, a hurricane warning is now in effect, and it could arrive as early as tomorrow. >> as we've been reporting to you, tropical storm barry is headed straight for the state's coast with new orleans possibly taking the brunt of the storm. so here's what's happening right now. sandbags are being put out in
6:09 am
low-lying areas to try to move some of that flooding around. people are also leaving town. we've been showing you video of flooding from the rain all this week in new orleans, and now the mayor there is sounding the alarm. >> we cannot pump our way out of the water levels and the water falls that are expected to hit the city of new orleans. >> here is the big concern, the mighty mississippi is already at flood stage, and with more rain expected, things could get much worse. >> meteorologist kari hall is tracking all of this for us. kari, i know you know that area well. you've lived there before. what are people dealing with right now? >> they are evacuating some of the coastal parishes there, as they get ready for heavy rounds of rain. we're already starting to see some of those heavy rain bands moving in, and so they have been soaked. the water levels are high, and it really can't hold much more, and the problem is, this system is so slowly moving that it's going to dump the potential of anywhere from 10 to 20 inches of rain, and so as this moves in, we're going to see this
6:10 am
producing some flooding, the potential of some of those levees being breached, and so that's going to be what we'll watch over the next few days and hopefully we get the best case scenario with some of the lower ends of rainfall totals expected there. so far, we are going to see this moving in, as we go into tomorrow as well, so wll have more updates on that. i'll bring it back home with a look at our local forecast, coming up in a few minutes. mike, now you're tracking a crash on the peninsula? >> i am, way over on the coast, highway 1 all the way over here near the tunnel. we don't have any major problems reported but i see a little slowing show up on the northbound side of highway 1 so we'll track that and a note for folks headed north from pacifica and half moon bay. we'll look at a smooth drive all sides of the bay, all warned, green sensors. . is a great friday drive, light volume of traffic through the dublin interchange, a little slowing highway 84 and there you go, maybe one blip for 880 through hayward, where you expect to see any slowing if there is any right now.
6:11 am
a smooth drive for fremont, southbound 880, loosening up a little bit. things are getting lighter after the early bursts in most of your spots. the delay that we have to report is on b.a.r.t., orinda into rockridge highway 24 there's an equipment problem for one of the trains but it's been holding steady. back to you. >> thanks, mike. coming up next on "today in the bay," singer r. kelly back in jail, arrested on more sex trafficking charges. still ahead at 6:25, where he is expected to be extradited to face those charges. president trump this morning weighing in on libra, that new facebook cryptocurrency. we'll walk you through it, coming up in business and tech. i know you like cute things, scott. look at that. these baby penguins learning how to swim and guess what? you can check them out for yourselves and in person. but you probably can't hold them. we'll tell you where you can get all this done, have a little fun this weekend, coming up here for you on "today in the bay." 6:11. just when you thought you were done painting...

6:15 am
into oakland out of orinda, recovering as well. the bart train the equipment problem has been in recovery mode. very good morning and a happy friday to you as well. the dow industrials crossing 27,000 for the first time. markets roaring ahead on hopes of rate cuts. let me be a downer here for a minute. rate cuts are like medicine. if you are happy getting your medicine, it's still because somebody thinks you're sick. the dow rose partially because of a jump in health care stocks. look at anthem. they're up because the president's plan to lower your health care costs is not working. so a higher stock market is not necessarily good for everyone and everything. facebook was actually down as worries grow about its proposed libra cryptocurrency. what will congress do, asks politico. the atlantic wonders, what about privacy? hidden costs, warns "usa today." india is not interested says cnn. president trump weighed in tweeting he doesn't like
6:16 am
cryptocurrencies. he prefers the dollar and fed chairman powell raising concerns about money laundering. facebook has a long road ahead of it. google responding after a dutch news reporter discovered google contractors are listening to recordings of some of the things you say to your google home assistant. they do that to better program the voice recognition. google says the report is true. amazon does this, too. ideally they're only listening to the recordings after the wake-up word okay google, or alexa. this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. this is how they get the devices to understand what people say. ford just made a deal with volkswagen. vw will invest billions in ford's argo self-driving car system and ford will get access to vw's electric car technology. the genius project in oakland to teach young black men
6:17 am
about coding and leadership and entrepreneurship. this week on "press:here" i sit down with the organizer who says his aim is not necessarily to increase the number of african-americans at high-tech firms. >> we aren't going to lose sleep on the representation on a given night because we're helping young people understand how to build for themselves, how to build relationships, and how to find their pathway and make their pathways if they're not clearly established. >> dr. brandon nicholson saying i'm not here to help google. i'm hear to help the young men, who will make the next google for themselves. we'll talk about it on "press:here" sunday after "meet the press." something else that might make you feel good. >> what's that? >> penguin chicks. >> hey, what are you doing? >> finding his best light. >> we can tell you they're learning how to swim. can you believe that? these adorable chicks right here at the san francisco zoo, so you can see them this weekend if you
6:18 am
like. this is their first time swimming and also learning how to socialize and eat. all five of the chicks were born at the zoo two months ago. so they're still just little babies. look kind of big though, right? >> yeah. >> eating a lot. >> you might be thinking we outdid it with the cute baby animal this is week. we don't think so. >> nope, nope. we've been showing you the baby flamingos from oregon, this was yesterday, also the ducklings in sacramento. i want to know which one is your favorite. go to my twitter -- instagram page, m underscore dubworld, you see on the screen, and vote on which one. right now the penguins are in the lead. if you say no, no, it's the flamingos or the little ducklings, you need to go vote. make your voice heard! >> i voted. i like to exercise my rights. >> you don't have to tell us. >> i'm going to decline to state. >> i did vote, kris, yesterday on your back to school. >> are you doing shopping? >> no. not even think beiing about it.
6:19 am
>> i'd like to think about it to try to get deals but there's too much summer going on. >> yes, absolutely. >> a lot of summer going on. >> a lot of summer. >> it is going to feel like it this weekend as we get ready for hotter weather all across the bay area, especially inland, for the coast, we are going to keep it cool there, and this is why. we are still seeing the fog rolling over san francisco. this is our view of our camera above the fog from our sutro tower camera. as the day begins we have fog near the coast and all clear in the inland valleys. right now it's 56 degrees in sunol. in the tri-valley if you're about to head out to the dublin b.a.r.t. station it will be cool, upper 50s to start but look at how fast it warms up, we're at 76 at 11:00. 84 at 1:00 today, and so with our high temperatures above where we've been all week long, our warming trend is under way. morgan hill, expect a high of 89 degrees. east bay highs seeing a lot more 90s here. concord up to 93 degrees, while
6:20 am
oakland tops out at 75, and look at how cool it will be in half moon bay, 61 degrees. palo alto reaches 82. in san francisco, mostly some 60s there, but 80s and 90s in the north bay. we do still have a very weak onshore wind flow for the inland areas. it doesn't help us out much today. by this evening, it's really starting to pick up with some windy and cool conditions in san francisco, half moon bay, and our beaches are cool and windy but santa cruz not much in the way of wind, so it's going to be warmer, and we'll get more sunshine. so it's going to be a nice weekend there, and our valleys are going to be really hot, so you may be looking for somewhere cool and we're going to see it coming down just a few more degrees early next week, after that hot weekend, but really no big changes in san francisco. mike, how is that b.a.r.t. delay? >> minor and clearing. anywhere west of orinda, we should see no problems, max ten-minute delay for perhaps one or two trains still in the system. over here, we're also seeing the same thing for the bay bridge.
6:21 am
backup minor and clearing right now. the worst of the backup is over on the right approach. the fastrak lanes let up over the last ten minutes. a little build again, we'll see that fluctuate in the commute any time before 7:00 and it will kick in there and around the bay. the richmond-san rafael bridge early slowing and clearing again here, same pattern the bay bridge a little bit more lag coming off of the east shore freeway. the light friday drive, highway 4 through bay point, over the last seven minutes the slower sensors popped up. by the time we get to concord, walnut creek, everything is fine. south 680 toward the dublin interchange and including the dublin interchange a nice flow and minor delays altamont toward livermore. the san mateo bridge drive is slowing a bit for the flat section. more people. >> thank you, mike. coming up, singer k. kelly arrested again, the new charges he's facing outside of illinois. plus a brush fire raging out of control right now in maui. the impact it's having on
6:22 am
tourists and residents alike, and maybe even on your summer vacation plans. that's next. you're watching "today in the bay." this is fred. he's dancing like nobody's watching.
6:23 am
