presumed dead in an attack at an animation studio. a man broke into the studio with gasoline and set it on fire. at least 36 people were injured. the suspect survived and is in custody. the attack happened early thursday morning local time. authorities not saying if they know how the attacker is tied to the studio, but according to some reports there's no obvious connection. they believe about 70 people were working inside that building when the attack took place. 5:01. this morning thousands of president trump supporters backing his attack on four minority congress women. tracie potts is live in washington with more on the disturbing rally. good morning. >> not just the rally, scott, but that video that everybody has been talking about this morning of the chanting going on at that rally. it was reminiscent of the 2016

heading to the appeals court later this morning. here's the cross i am talking about for folks that are not familiar with it here in albany. it does belong to the lion's club, and it sits on top of albany hill and has been there for decades and lights up during christmas and easter, and the lion club was given a small space to maintain the cross back in 1971 during a land deal when a former city councilman sold the land, but a group of atheist and a group wanted it removed because it doesn't represent all religions. the mayor said why some city officials want the cross >> we want to get the city out of the business of trying to promote one religion over the other. >> the attorney representing the lion's club said the city knew

the cross was there before the land deal was made and the city cannot disregard what they called the easement deal because it was approved by the city years ago, and the ninth circuit will hear arguments starting at 9:00 a.m. >> we will continue to follow that. thank you. breaking overnight, tension in the streets of puerto rico as thousands call on the governor to resign. a fifth night of protest last night included fireworks and tear-gas that rightfully was used to protect the governor's mansion. pop star, ricky martin, posted video from the protest. >> it's barbaric what he's doing. >> the text scandal follows a string of corruption allegations tied to the governor's staff, including the arrest of several top administrators.

a key ingredient in a controversial weed killer has been banned in some pay pick anywhere areas. jurors in two bay area lawsuits recently found that tkpwhraoeu tpau state contributed to some cancers. a proposed bill is looking at a vote, and gavin newsom said he does not know if he would sign it. in san francisco, mayor london breed and the proposal comes after a report finding the two companies are two-thirds

responsibility for a recent spike in traffic congestion. the tax would be around 3% of the total cost of the ride. if supervisors approve it it would head to the november ballot. two-thirds of the voters would have to approve it. believe it or not both companies say they support the new tax. a heat dome arching over much of the country bringing dangerous conditions from the midwest to the east coast. triple digits span many states. after a weekend blackout in new york, crews are shoring up the power grids so it doesn't take another hit. and this road in kansas buckling due to the heat. if you are headed to the region, the advice is to take it easy. >> the humidity and the high temperature takes it out of you real quick. >> it's very, very hot. >> things are so bad in st. louis volunteers are delivering free air-conditioning units around the city. >> boy, that humidity can wear

you down. >> kari hall has been tracking that around the united states. >> yeah, it's not just the temperatures but the humidity making it unbearable out there. the heat continindex values ove degrees, and people are not acclimated to that kind of heat just yet. most people don't realize that heat can be one of the leading killers in weather-related disasters across the country. it's something we will have to watch for today. we will have cooler weatherein the temperatures coming down. as we look at how dublin shapes up today, low 60s to start out this morning, and 79 degrees at noon and low 80s during the middle of the day. let's go through our microclimates and see how the temperatures shape up for today. looking at mid-70s, and san francisco stays cool and foggy throughout the day, and we will

welcome back, everyone. developing this morning firefighters are still not saying if they know for certain what sparked this warehouse fire. a security guard heard a pop near an area where recent electrical work had just been completed and then we saw the flames. firefighters put it out quickly and nobody was hurt. happening today, billionaire and registered sex offender ebstein will learn if he will be freed from jail while awaiting trial. his attorneys argued he should

be confined to house arrest, and two accusers took the stand asking for ebstein to remain in custody. new video to show you shows the full extent of the damage to the notre dame cathedral in paris. you can see three months after the disaster the sealing of the cathedral is torn apart and the site is covered in debris. robotics are being used to remove the debris from the cathedral because of falling objects. it's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. >> those famous words from astrona astronaut neil armstrong from around the world.

and you have breaking news. >> that's right. this is a view of antioch police doing their work. sadly at 1:00 on city streets for antioch there was a deadly crash involving a vehicle running into a tree. there's apparently a car fire and a person trapped inside and before they could clear that person from the car that person did die as a result, either of the injuries or the fire or possibly both. we are following this investigation. it continues on buchanan 4. it will affect folks getting to the freeway, and there's a couple gas stations to the south of highway 4. the rest of the bay is a smooth drive, and we will follow that deadly crash, and the bay bridge

off to a getaway car. she was sitting in her driveway off cochran road. neighbors have posted videos like these of other recent car break-ins that were successful over the last two months. we don't know if they are the same suspects. we should mention the young woman is an nbc bay area intern, and she was shaken up but is okay aid call police. there was no major increase in auto burglaries and a slight decrease in stolen vehicles through the first four months of the year. a spokesman told me the auto crimes they are seeing in the city is happening in commercial centers neighborhoods. the advice is no matter where you park your car, if you are at s locked and your out, make sure

drive-thru. it's the long line of cars backing up traffic in the neighborhood and the noise being so close to their homes. tonight the city of walnut creek's planning and design review committees will meet at 6:00 on the third floor of city hall. reporting live here in walnut creek, bob redell, "today in the bay." new housing is approved for the hunters point in san francisco. you may recall earlier this year the city's board of supervisors ordered an independent investigation of the cleanup in the old naval site. plan to have a

vote on the tax. "the chronicle" reports instead of putting the measure on the november ballot he will shoot for a similar measure on the 2020 ballot when more people will be voting. the price for plastic bags will go up. next july they will charge 25 cents a bag, up 15 cents. and then the board of supervisors passed the ordinance and it's expected to be approved in a second and final vote. some areas already charge 25 cents. marriott is getting the green light to replace two hotels destroyed in the deadly bay area fire. it will go up in the site where the two hotels were destroyed in a fire.

they are going to submit a plan in order to gain approval. a big update on the ongoing construction on the richmond san rafael bridge. caltrans said crews poured the final concrete to complete the joint repairs on the deck. that new design will shrink and expand with the changing temperatures. the joints were replaced after concrete chunks fell during winter storms in february. additional work still has to be completed this month. dozens of baby birds need your help after the tree they were living in snapped in half. >> a tree in downtown oakland toppled over, and inside were dozens of nests. rescuers saved 89 chicks and took them to the wildlife center in fairfield. many needed surgeries.

mike has serious news to report. >> yeah, that was a deadly crash in antioch, and so we will continue to follow this. highway 4 itself, no exits are reported closed so we will track that. rie toll plaz and the is at the metering lights registered on. tow truck, the red one, it was stuck there and we didn't notice a problem with the flow, and they got a bridge truck out there to help them clear that lane. that will be the cash lanes off to the left which will start to ease up in the next 20 minutes. with the slowdown they may be held up a little longer. we will track that very closely, even subtle changes like that will have an affec the bay

bridge. so far everything else is moving smoothly. we like to see the green sensors. green means go, right? >> yeah, and we are headed towards the weekend. we are making plans that we can start out with, a giant's game, and free ice cream. there's a concert. there's a lot going on at oracle park tomorrow before the game, and of course during the game, that starts at 7:15. if you are going out there tomorrow come and see me and i will give you ice cream. it will be 70 degrees at 4:00 and then cooling into the mid-60s with more clouds moving in as the game goes along. saturday's forecast looks good. still a wide range in temperatures with the coastal areas in the mid-60s and some mid-80s for the inland valleys. on sunday all over again, we still see our summer pattern holding and it's going to be nice for much of the bay area. if you are headed over to livermore we have art under the

oaks and that's going on on saturday and starts out at about 73 degrees, and sunshine warming up into the mid-80s so nice weather for that event. and also the mountain view buddist temple will have their obon festival going on from noon to 9:00 on sunday, so we have great weather reach into the low 80s during the middle of the day. if you are thinking of going to the beach, santa cruz will keep it cool there this weekend with mid-60s for a high temperature, and just slightly warmer on sunday, but not by much. it will be warmer in parts of the sierra with squaw valley seeing a little snow there on some of the mountain peaks. we will be in the upper 70s for saturday and sunday, so that's great hiking weather, and maybe good for swimming, too. we'll talk about what is going on today as we still see the wide range in temperatures coming up in about three minutes. >> thank you,mingp next and all

police to find out more information. we will bring you the new details as soon as we learn more. happening today, civil liberties groups will ask a judge in san francisco to block president trump's recent order limiting asylum seekers at the border. the new rules prevent most migrants from seeking refugee protection as long as they pass through another country first. the aclu already filed suit and today they will ask for a temporary retraining order until the case is decided. and then senator kamala harris, joe biden and sanders in the top three. harris has 23%, andid this morn chevron is downplaying the most recent flaring activity of the richmond refinery. the refinery sent an alert out

describing it as excessive flaring activity in a processing unit. chevron called it a level one flare which it considers to be the lowest level. that went on for about an hour and chevron said it did not pose a danger to the public. another blow for a controversial project in palo alto. according to the environmental says it would cause traffic issues. neighbors have been fighting that expansion for years, since 2016. the school went over its llme plan for nearly 15 years. deputies in sacramento said the ice cream truck was stolen yesterday and the thief ditched it and carjacked a bwm, and the

temperatures across the bay area. we are seeing mostly cloudy skies and the fog in san francisco right now and a clear start in san jose as we get ready for a slightly cooler day. check out the 7-day forecast at the bottom of the screen as you head out the door in pleasant hill. going to the bart station, you coup s becausee clouds here and there. the fog stays in the coast and also in san francisco. bay later this evening it will reach across the bay and will also start to see some of the fog moving into the south county by early tomorrow morning, and that's going to keep it slightly cooler there as well. our high temperatures there today will reach into the low 80s in morgan hill, and napa topping out at 80 degrees. all the temperatures coming down a couple degrees lower from yesterday and the weather pattern starts to change a bit. we will have a stronger ocean

breeze today, and high pressure builds once again for the desert southwest and warms up our temperatures go into the weekend. we will have warmer air moving in. an area of low pressure approaching the northwest, and it looks like high pressure keeps it off the coast and will continue on with warm weather. we will have to see if that makes it in because if it does, it will cool off. we have warm weather in the forecast, especially for saturday continuing into next week. right now highs in the 80s in the valleys, and a bit more sunshine from tomorrow through the weekend. mike, you have the latest at the bay bridge. yes, the continuing saga of the bay bridge, which was not a saga but just the last report. about 15 minutes we have had a disabled vehicle there and we saw everything jam up behind it and the tow truck made its way there, and hooked it up and just before the commercial we saw it pulling away from the span. that cleared the bay bridge. there was another tow truck that

came over here and waiting there for five minutes and we thought there was a problem, but they were doing a traffic break to clear the vehicles from that. in the last three minutes or so we are seeing the left approach lighten up. remember i told you i didn't know how it would affecthe prwell, dn't have an affect. the commute around fitzgerald, not a major problem. and then following the deadly crash investigation on highway 4, and highway 4 itself mild slowing through antioch. 101 and 280, some folks may be confused as to which freeways they take, and it happens. 101 just got cleared so maybe chp settled on the location as

san jose police officers saved a man from a burning van. investigators say a man was yelling at officers and would not step out of a flaming vehicle in the parking lot of one world montessori school last week. he was taken to the hospital and treated for minor burns. take a look at the little puppy, and if he looks familiar at all, the park police in pinole would like your help. they are looking for people that stole two puppies ten days ago on july 8th. the border collie puppies were just about six weeks old. if you have information, call the police. leaving after a law enforcement career that spanned three decades. she led the san mateo police force and her retirement is affected at the end of the year,
