sleeker than ever, but does it measure up "early today" starts right now >> good friday morning i'm frances rivera >> and i'm phillip mena. a dangerous heat wave is hovering over much of the country. triple digit temperatures could turn deadly this weekend new york city has declared a heat emergency and canceled the triathlon. some of the athletes and event staff will distribute water and gatorade around the city instead. and lyft is offering free and discounted rides to cooling centers in impacted cities including chicago. that's where nbc's blayne alexander is following the story. >> reporter: the relentless heat wave is showing no mercy from new mexico to new hampshire, 200 million people are under a heat alert through the weekend. in chicago, a.c. repair crews are stretched to the max and downtown, steam rising from sky scrapers after a morning rainstorm. here in chicago, it's the tale of two extremes. just six months ago this exact spot was frozen over

as forecasted, this has spread into the northeast heat warnings involved around washington, new york we have 37 states, 187 million, and i do expect that to move into the mid-atlantic as well. so daytime highs, air temperatures are really going to sit in the mid 90s here. but when you factor in the dewpoints, what what does that mean it's the moisture in the atmosphere it's really not that dry sauna heat it feels like you're in the deep end of a swimming pool heat index, st. louis 110 degrees, 111 for chicago so this is typical air that we see in summer, but it's going to continue to hover and rise across the northeast so that's the big problem. >> it's going to stay and seems like it's growing in this part thank you, janessa >> new this morning, president trump is announcing his replacement for alexander accosta. eugene scalia, son of late antonin scalia as his labor
