you're starting out in richmond. >> i am, kari, the toll plaza for the richmond-san rafael bridge, behind me some flashing lights, the reflection or refraction of the light indicates there's still a has s forth. there was slowing westbound. eastbound there was a traffic break so they are moving crews through the area, slowly moving across the bridge, not much of a disturbance. keep that in mind, the only spot we're watching right now. back to you. we are watching breaking news, overnight standoff. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live in milpitas with what she knows. good morning. >> reporter: good mog. into custody after all of this. look at the mess here at this apartment building in milpitas. that is the result of a flash bang grenade being thrown through the window into that apartment near north temple

drive that was just about an hour ago. this started after 11:30 last night when a woman was attacked with a large knife just down the street from here in front of an apartment building on calaveras boulevard. when officers arrived to question him, he refused to come out. officers evacuated all of the other people who live in that building, and tried to negotiate with him for hours and that's the sound that you hear there in the video. eventually s.w.a.t. officers had to go in and get him. >> after four hours, we were able to finally make contact with him through a window at the apartment. he refused to safely take him into custody. >> reporter: the woman who was attacked is going to be okay. she has thi? is being question and it does not seem the two knew each other. officers are still on scene in

milpitas processing the scene, trying to figure out what happened and why that woman was attacked and what the connection is between that man and that woman, though at this point, they say there doesn't appear to be one. we'll keep asking questions in milpitas. i'm kris sanchez, "today in the bay." new overnight, lots of police activity in contra costa county, this is video just in to our newsroom showing several streets shut town in bay point on riverside drive north of highway 4. it seems to be an investigation into a death. we reached out to contra costa county sheriff's department and waiting for more information. livermore police released more photos of a suspect, 21-year-old who are shea luis tejas accused of shooting and killing 16-year-old manuel mosbey out in front of a taco bell. investigators believe the two had a past history. livermore police are working

with other agencies to try to track down the suspect. >> we appreciate the help we've received from the public and all the tips we get are a direct result of what we put out on social media. >> family members say mosbey was an aspiring rapper and standout football player at livermore high school. 4:34. san mateo county deputies mourning the death of a correctional officer who died this week while on vacation. a.j. arquesa drowned tuesday. he was an iraq war veteran as well, had twochildren. he was just 34 years old. happening today, peru's former president now staring down extradition, will appear in a san francisco couroou. marsha alejandro toledo into custody. he's tied to a massive corruption ring that's already brought down many former took $ from bribes while in office. toledo is living in northern california and briefly studied

at stanford. he'll be in court today asking for bail, while his extradition case plays out. continuing coverage of a high-profile case involving a bay area freelance journalist targeted in a police raid. the judge in the case says a warrant should never have been issued, a search warrant. sfpd raided brian carmody's office in may, they were investigating a police report in the death of jeff adachi. the same judge who issued the warrant said police cannot use evidence collected from carmody's cell phone. journalists and their materials like notes have special protection under the law. the judge says police never told her carmody was a journalist when they asked her to snrran it's 4:35. a new attempt to expand transit options in eastern contra costa county. "east bay times" says transportation leaders are gree at establishing more connections

between antioch and brentwood. it's funded by a $755,000 state grant. the county's transit authority will look at how to improve connections to capital corridor and ace rail service a long with a proposed ferry service between antioch and martinez. bob redell will have a full report coming up in our next hour. people on the peninsula are being warned about a mountain lion on the prowl. belmont police say someone saw the cat near a backyard in the belburn drive, in another recent sighting two weeks ago a home security video in san mateo caught the big cat strolling by the sidewalk. a furry visitor wandered into the south lake tahoe city hall this week, these were snapped by a local resident. the sliding doors like the rest of us. no word if there was any damage. >> wow. coming up on "today in the

headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street is said to open up in the green this morning. investors are keying in on comments from a top official at the federal reserve. in a speech yesterday, he said the fed should "act quickly to tackle any signs of a slowtown in the economy." the markets taking that to mean the fed will be aggressive cutting interest rates starting with the meeting later this month. the spokesperson for the fed saying the speech was purely academic and a signal what the fed is likely to do. boeing will take a massive charge of nearly $5. on its of the 737 max. th payments to airlines who canceled thousands of flights since march and delayed delivery of the planes. boeing is scheduled to report earnings results next week. it's unclear when the planes will fly again. the boeing projects the max to return to service by the end of next year. general motors unveiling a redesigned cor jet, a splashy

to lower 60s and so our temperatures starting out the door in antioch for your morning drive will be at about 59 degrees, if you're leaving at 6:00, and we'll see it slowly warming up today at 11:00, we're at 72. eventually reaching the mid 80s in the south bay, with downtown san jose reaching 84 degrees. we'll have breezy westerly winds and as we check out the east bay, we'll be up to 84 in concord, while oakland today tops out at 72. half moon bay reaching 65 degrees and 81 in palo alto. san francisco in the 60s today and breezy winds at about 15 to 20 miles per hour. wide range in temperatures from the north bay anywhere from 62 in point reyes to 90 in ukiah today. if you're heading out and making weekend plans, come see me at the giants game later this evening. i'll be handing out some free ice cream from 4:00 to 7:00 at lefty o'dhoul's plaza.

"today in the bay's" bob redell lasers in on the story. ♪ >> reporter: 50 years ago, can't believe it's been that long, two american astronauts touched down on the lunar surface to become the first men on the moon. hmm.

bounce back laser light signals from locations on earth, including the bay area. one of the first lasers to shoot at the moon was attached to the shane 120 inch telescope at the lick observatory atop mt. hamilton. scientists wanted a better understanding of the relationship with our celestial cousin >> it would come to that beam. >> reporter: during the first firing july 20th, 1969, the scientists were off target. nasa gave them the wrong coordinates. >> it does depend where you're standing on the earth, and they used a catalogue coordinate for the observatory that's over in the parking lot of our visitor center. we're about 1700 feet east of that. >> reporter: several days later on august 1st, the shane laser finally got a direct hit. the photon's 478,000 mile round trip to the moon and back took

toughly two and a half seconds. scientists in california suspected they weren't alone, that an unauthorized third party was trying to laser in on their reflectors. they later learned it was the russians. >> they didn't actually know precisely the distance between the soviet union and the u.s., and by using the lunar ranging, they could actually fine tune some of these numbers. >> reporter: and that's obviously has missile applications. >> that -- yes. >> reporter: the lunar laser ranging experiment the astronauts placed five decades ago is still ongoing and since proven that geo location works and helped us understand tectonic plate movement on earth and given us insight to what our friend in the sky is made of. at the lick observatory, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> interesting and a fun way to tell us, too. today the "uss hornet" is holding a sleeper event. customer also spend the night on the flight deck. >> chief meteorologist jeff ranieri will forecast live from
