milpitas with all the details. a chaotic night. >> reporter: very chaotic night. milpitas police are on the scene through the window at this apartment processing evidence and took that man into custody but not before this. that was one of the flash bang grenades the milpitas police tossed into that man's apartment in order for s.w.a.t. officers to be able to go in and get him. that happened about 3:30 this morning on north temple drive near east calaveras boulevard but it all started around 11:30 last night when a woman was attacked with a large knife just down the street from here. when officers arrived at the suspect's home to question him, he refused to come out. >> after four hours we were able to finally make contact with him through a window at the apartment. he refused to come out and our s.w.a.t. team members were able to make entry into his room and safely take him into custody.

>> reporter: the woman who was attacked earlier is going to be okay. she has non-life-threatening injuries so it was a large knife in that attack. the suspect is being questioned as we speak. at this point, milpitas police say it does not appear that the suspect and that victim knew each other. in milpitas, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> 5:02. president trump facing more fallout from those "send her back" chants that broke out at his rally earlier this week. this morning he's trying to disconnect himself from what happened. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live in washington with the latest. tracie? >> hi there, scott. remember the chants came from the fact that the president originally tweeted that these four women of color serving in congress should go back to the countries that they came from. they're all americans, but now the president is suggesting that maybe his supporters took that a bit too far. >> i was not happy with it. >> reporter: president trump distancing himself.

iran's deputy foreign minister claims none of iran's drones are missing. president trump said yesterday the u.s. took down a drone flying too close to the "uss boxer" over the strait of hormuz, comes amidst rising tensions with iran. iranian media saying the navy seized an oil tanker. iran says the tanker was smuggling oil. new details in the case of an off-duty ride share driver charged in a string of sexual assaults. he preyed they say on intoxicated women who thought they were getting into lyfts and ubers ordered in san francisco. the judge this week heard testimony on whether dna obtained by authority should be used as i evidence. the judge called for more hearings and plans to make a decision at a later date. new detail this is morning in a san francisco skateboarder critically injured during an annual event for dare devils.

tomoko okawa badly hurt after falling during last week's dolores hill ball. she fractured her skull and sustained severe brain trauma. that led to emergency surgery. a go found me page has been set up and raised $16,000 so far. okawa is the founder of her own skate company. here is a follow-up on the fight to bring a homeless shelter to the embark bedough. according to "the examiner" a a sacramento judge declined to grant an immediate injunction to a group of neighbors fighting that plan. the judge sent the lawsuit and request for a restraining order back to a san francisco court. the board of supervisors last month denied an appeal from the group. neighbors are concerned the center will bring drugs and crime to the area. santa rosa has officially named a new police chief and it's a first for the city. captain rainier navarro is the first latino to lead the department. santa rosa city manager announced the appointment yesterday. navarro is a 27-year veteran on the force. his first day as boss is august

1st. the current chief hank schrader is retiring. menlo summer fest runs tomorrow and sunday on santa cruz avenue. it includes food, live music, art, a photo booth as well as several home and garden exhibits, and a 5k run on sunday. some days you just got to bounce and you'll get a chance to do that in morgan hill, the biggest bouncing house in the world is in the bay area this weekend. it's in the "guinness book of world records," so we know this to be the case. it will be at the outdoor sports center starting today through sunday. you have to buy tickets but if you can't catch it this weekend, big bounce america will be in san francisco next month and santa rosa in september. >> i like how they use one of the adult crew members to display the fun, right, kari? >> my soon would love that. that may be fun, parents with their kids heading out there will have great weekend.

a little bit warmer this weekend as we start out with cool temperatures, a live look over the south bay. san jose will see temperatures in the upper 50s as you get ready to head out the door. warming into the upper 60s at 10:00 and at 12:00 we're at 76 degrees. let's go through all of our microclimates in the day ahead. at 10:00 we're still in the 60s, a couple of spots starting to make it into the 70s, but more widespread upper 70s for the inland valleys. as we go toward your lunch hour, take the lunch outside today. we'll talk more about this and the weekend forecast. mike, you're looking at the east bay. >> i told folks we'll check out the disabled vehicle. peninsula and south bay no problems. we zoom toward west 580 at 238 at the split, where ac transit bus reportedly over on the right shoulder. chp has waivved off their vehicles. i haven't seen any slowing for the last 20 minutes so i'll say we're okay. i'll keep that on it my monitor

your commute is starting to shape up. good morning. i'm frank holland at cnbc headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street is said to open up in the green this morning. investors are keying in on comments from a top official at the federal reserve. in a speech yesterday, he said the fed should "act quickly to tackle any signs of a slowdown in the economy." the markets taking that to mean the fed will be aggressive cutting interest rates starting with the meeting later this month. the spokesperson for the fed downplaying the comments saying that the speech was purely academic and not a signal what the fed is likely to do. boeing will take a massive charge of nearly $5 billion on its quarterly earnings due to the grounding of the 737 max. the company is bracing for possible payments to airlines who canceled thousands of flights since march and delayed delivery of the planes. boeing is scheduled to report earnings results next week. it's unclear when the planes will fly again. boeing projects the max to

reported on all morning yesterday on "today in the bay," the fight continues over a proposed amy's drive-through on north main street in walnut creek. city planners last night held a first public hearing. the larkey park neighbors united group opposes it. successfully halted plans for an in and out burger and a starbucks complex on the same site. they argue a drive-through would lead to long lines of cars. amy says its lines are less busy because they attract a different kind of clientele. google offering even more money for anyone who can find hackers in their system. the company doubling its reward for those who can find bugs in the chrome web browser, that means hackers can receive up to $30,000. the catch is google says you have to write a "high quality report" on what you discovered to determine how much you'll get paid. many disney fans today probably feeling a little hakuna matata. >> the live action version of

would be. >> all right, well maybe you want to go outtowardoors this wd anyway. >> we'll find some air conditioning and head to the movies. a live look in san jose it's a beautiful start and right now we're about 45 minutes away from sunrise, so as the sun comes up, it's a nice cool start to the morning, if you're heading out the door in oakland. you want to head to the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station, it's going to be right at about 62 degrees, and then slowly warming up today, overall really nice with mostly sunny skies. our south bay high temperatures reach into the low 80s in gilroy. you may see some patches of fog this morning, and then we're going to be up to about 82 in milpitas today. 82 will be the high in walnut creek, while hayward reaches 75 degrees. we'll see a high of 76 in san mateo this afternoon, and for san francisco again we're back in the lower 60s, but much more sunshine today, and a high of 90 degrees in ukiah, while santa rosa reaches the upper 70s. we'll see a high of 79 in napa

today, but of course that big story has been the high heat they've been feeling across much of the country. this is a look at the high temperatures for today, reaching the upper 90s and two-thirds of the country, and then also heat index values in some spots over 110 degrees. we'll feel some cool temperatures as we celebrate the apollo 11 50th anniversary this weekend. if you're going there for the celebrations in alameda, it will be in the mid-70s during the middle of the day, and we also have some warmer temperatures for art under the oaks tomorrow in livermore. it's going to be a great day for that, but you might want to head out there early, where the temperatures will be cooler in the low 70s. and then as we look at our inland forecast over the next several days, just a touch warmer going into tomorrow, as well as sunday into the start of next week. san francisco more sunshine today, with highs in the mid-60s. mike, you've been tracking the roads. everything seems to be slowing pretty well.

the river of the guadalupe river, and found a woman's body. it is being investigated as a suspicious death. it's up to a jury to decide if southwest airlines is to blame for the death of cnbc financial analyst. his widow is suing for $53 million in damages. he died in 2014 after suffering a blood clot on board a southwest flight from oakland to southern california. the orange county sheriff's report says the flight attendant heard her groaning and crying in the restroom. his widow said he ended up dying the next day. >> the flight attendant didn't do her job. >> what happens in the air is different than what you see on the ground. >> southwest attorneys say a two foot long blood clot killed him and not the flight crew.

it turns out many the man called the forma bro will not get out of prison after his seven-year security fraud conviction was upheld, for lying to investors about the performance of two hedge funds he ran and he gained widespread notoriety when his drug company hiked the price of an hiv medication by more than 5,000%. in philadelphia a high-rise caught on fire. those inside scrambled for safety. one man took matters into his own hands making a death-defying decision. look at what he did. he actually climbed down the outside of the building, scaling 15 floors, just to escape the fire or smoky conditions. it actually took him less than three minutes to make it to the ground safely. vacaville police officers embracing a certain stereotype, this is a new video of them in a

temperatures across our microclimates today. anywhere from 84 in san jose to 86 in antioch. 79 in nain napa today. ukiah tops out at 90 and san francisco reaches 66 degrees. we'll look ahead to the weekend forecast in about seven minutes. mike, you're saying fridays are different at the bay bridge. >> yes t builds up more slowly but it still builds up. we have those metering lights ready to be turned on. they were not registered on when i last checked at 5:27. so that's a little bit late for friday. looks like they are stacking up in the cash and fast track lanes are slowing. we'll consider them on for now. if they're not it's a nice report. contra costa county no delays for highway 4, walnut creek interchange and the tri-valley looks great coming out of the altamont pass. the south bay no delays out of south county through silicon valley and up the peninsula. back over to you. later this morning the city of oakland will face off against the oakland raiders in court, regarding the team's decision to

move to vegas. >> however, the raiders have an unexpected ally, the city isn't too pleased about. "today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live with the details this morning. pete? >> reporter: good morning, guys. that unexpected ally is the department of justice siding with the oakland raiders when it comes to the lawsuit. the city of oakland is not too pleased about it. let's talk about what we know at this point. when you look at the latest court filings, it shows the city of oakland is objecting to the submission by the doj which argues oakland shouldn't be permitted to recover lost tax revenues through anti-trust laws. the doj saying tax revenues aren't related to commercial interests or enterprise of the host city, oakland. the city of oakland disagrees saying this precedent would allow sports teams to reap taxpayer financed benefits but then claim immunity in situations that aren't beneficial to the host cities. oakland would like to see the federal judge in charge of this case disregard the doj's statement but if the doj

succeeds, it could potentially limit recovery by the city of oakland and also potentially protect nfl teams in similar situations down the road. now the motivations for the doj stepping in are really unclear at this point, guys. the court filings indicate the department stepped in last month, one day before a scheduled hearing on the nfl's efforts to dismiss this case, but that federal court hearing is said to take place in san francisco, it will begin at 9:00 a.m. reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> that is curious timing. pete, thanks. authorities hope a new set of images will help them lead them to a man wanted in a deadly shooting of a popular high school student. >> livermore police released more photos of the suspect. 21-year-old jorge luis tejas accused of shooting and killing 16-year-old manuel mosbey out in front of a taco bell. he's been on the run since july 8th. investigators believe the two had a past history. livermore police are working with other agencies to try to track down the suspect. >> we appreciate the help we've

received from the public and all the tips we get are a direct result of what we put out on social media. >> family members say mosbey was an aspiring rapper and standout football player at livermore high school. >> 5:32. san mateo county deputies are mourning the death of a correctional officer who died this week while on vacation. a.j. arquesa drowned tuesday at zephyr cove in lake tahoe. he was an iraq war veteran as well, had two children. he was just 34 years old. >> it is 5:33 right now. happening today, peru's former president now staring down extradition, will appear in a san francisco courtroom. u.s. marshals this week took alejandro toledo into custody. he's tied to a massive corruption ring that's already brought down many former brazilian politicians. peru claims he took $20 million in bribes while in office. toledo is living in northern california and briefly studied

at stanford university. he'll be in court today asking for bail, while his extradition case plays out. also new this morning, a new attempt to expand transit options to connect cities in eastern contra costa county. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in antioch. good morning, bob. what are they looking at? >> reporter: well, scott and laura, transportation leaders here are trying to find more ways to connect antioch and brentwood to make it easier for people to travel between those two cities in the east bay and contra costa county, and transportation leaders are really trying to build on the success of the recent antioch b.a.r.t. extension. the "east bay times" reports the contra costa transportation authority has received a $755,000 grant for a two-year study to look into how to improve connections to let's say the capitol corridor, ace rail services a long with a proposed ferry service between antioch and martinez. they're also trying to find ways to work with the existing antioch b.a.r.t. station, and

tridelta local bus service, looking at fast mini shuttles for example running in the medians or express buses. that study is set to begin this fall. reporting live here in antioch, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. also new this morning, brentwood may soon get a new fire station. "the press" reports the city council signing off on plans for the city to move forward with those building plans. the new station would be city own, on city owned land on grant street and empire avenue but funding to staff that station remains up in the air. currently, all firefighters are situated in rented areas in brentwood city hall and outgrown that space. peoe on the peninsula are warned about a mountain lion on the prowl. belmont police say someone saw the cat near a backyard in the belburn neighborhood near the notre dame university. in another recent sighting two weeks ago a home security camera nearby san mateo caught a big cat running around the neighborhood. so let's talk about bears in

a very big surprise. a furry visitor wandering into south lake tahoe city hall. pictures snapped by one of the local leaders got the bear in the building or the bear got into the interest building, i'm tripping up on this one, just by going through the automatic doors. ey i'm so busy looking at the pictures i'm not reading the words. >> get ready for the bear that went over the mountain. >> scott, you're correct, you should always look at the bear instead of the words. >> the bear necessities. >> exactly. south lake tahoe city hall helping everyone out there. anyone waiting at the bay bridge, i said it builds for slowly and clears a bit on the friday. we see the early slowdown and build as folks rush over for the early commute, even on a friday and things will ease up especially during the summertime months. coming off the 880 overcrossing the secondary plaza has slowing, indicating more folks coming out of that portion of the east bay from this area here, but on the

upper east shore and the contra costa county approach off highway 4 and through walnut creek, everything is moving smoothly there. the rest of the bay shows a smooth, easy drive and it is typically the time we see slowing over there in san jose, but this morning, it's friday, we have a smooth flow so that's the burst right now, not bad for san jose. >> there we go. maybe folks are getting a jump on the weekend. it is friday. maybe you're going to the giants/mets game tonight at oracle park. let's talk about last night. red hot giants take the mets to task in 16 innings, yeah, 16. finishing closer to midnight, but the giants ended up winning it 3-2. >> it's a good day for a ball game and a good day for ice cream. the nbc bay area treat truck will be at oracle park and kari hall will be there, garvin thomas and chris chmura and lots of ice cream. they'll be there from 4:00 to 7:00. make sure to say hi. the game starts at 7:00. you can watch it right here on nbc bay area. you got ice cream duty. >> yes, today it will be very nice out there.

get more information. of course we'll give it to you as soon as we get it. palo alto police are searching for someone who robbed a man at gunpoint following a road rage argument on arboretum road near the stanford shopping center yesterday morning. the dispute started when a man threw a cup of cold coffee into the victim's car. the victim pulled into the lot of the shopping center, walked over to the man's car to confront him, that's when one driver flashed a gun. when the victim went back to the car, the gunman followed him and stole the victim's phone. it is 5:44. new video going viral this morning, parents claiming they were racially profiled while visiting a nike store in santa monica. jewell stallworth and myers dickerson paid for a basketball and while exiting the store they were approached by the manager who told them to ahead and over the stolen ball. the parents told them they paid for it and kept walking but the manager did not believe them and summoned police.

then this happened. >> she antagonized me. she's disrespectful. they said "you took the ball." >> it was eventually determined the couple had paid for the ball and later returned it for a full refund. the store manager has been fired. santa monica police are not commenting. the couple has hired an attorney. quarter to 6:00 right now. continuing coverage of a high-profile case involving a bay area freelance journalist targeted in a police raid. the judge in the case says a search warrant never should have been issued. >> sfpd officers raided brian carmody's home and office in may investigating the leak of a police report in the death of former public defender jeff adachi. police are still trying to determine who leaked the report. the same judge who issued the warrant has now ruled police cannot use evidence collected from carmody's cell phone. journalists and their materials like notes have special protection under the law, but

the judge says police never told her carmody was a journalist when they asked her to sign the warrant. the cost to get into an apartment or a house just went up. san jose remains the most expensive place to rent nationwide. the median rental now $3,760. that is a jump of more than 4% this year. number two is san francisco in the east bay, the median $3,560, up about 4% also. compare to the rest of the country, where the median rent is less than half that. here is a financial adviser who says buying a home here for most residents is out of the question. >> unless there's a massive change in the regulatory environment and we double the supply of housing, i don't think there's any way around it, that these folks are going to come here, they're going to make the money they are able to make and going to have to leave in order to buy. >> the latest quinnipiac poll says 50% of california voters

i sing with my kids all the time, so much so they're like mom, can you stop singing? >> you sing with your kids. >> i sing to them. >> it's at them. >> that van is my stage. >> i would love to see that. all right, a lot of people are singing headed out the door this morning because it's friday. we have some great weather headed our way, and look at this sunrise over the south bay. it is beautiful, and we do have mostly clear skies, a few low clouds rolling by in the distance. we'll be in the upper 50s in willow glen as you head out the door and some mid-70s by early afternoon. check out the seven-day forecast. it is already up at the bottom of the screen, with our antioch commute starting out also mostly clear. we'll be at 62 degrees at 6:00 and then some upper 60s by 9:00. these temperatures not bad at all. we'll be at 77 degrees as you head out for lunch. let's look at all of our microclimates as you make plans for today, at 10:00, danville at 67 degrees. cupertino at 69 degrees and santa rosa will be at about 68

degrees at 10:00. noon if you're thinking of going outside for lunch, do it. we'll be in the mid to upper 70s for many of our inland areas and reaching into the low 80s for spots like antioch and fairfield at 4:00. in concord we're at 85 degrees, and then coming down back into the 60s and 70s around sunset. if you're making weekend plans, make sure you check out the apollo 11 50th anniversary at the "uss hornet" in alameda. very nice out there, temperatures in the mid-60s during the morning. as we go throughout the day we reach into the mid-70s with sunshine, and if you want some warmer temperatures, head to livermore. there will be art under the oaks and our temperatures start out in the morning in the upper 60s, but then make it into the mid 80s ads the day goes along. it will be slightly warm in a few spots, starting out tomorrow continuing through sunday and throughout next week we have some very warm weather, even some low 90s for a couple of days, while san francisco holding steady there, we're still looking at mid-60s, but i

think we'll get a lot more sunshine today. mike, you were saying there is a slow approach to the bay bridge now. >> i mean one slow approach. coming off of 880 the overcrossing here is where you slow down, separated from the rest of your cash lanes, by those, they look like they are actually solid bars but they are actually flexible. don't test them. don't test them. over here the fastrak and cash lanes move smoothly after an initial backup. then they started to clear and it's a nice, easy drive. no metering lights from what i can read on the chp report, and we can see there is no backup at the lanes as well. a smooth flow all the way through contra costa county, that includes the walnut creek interchange, that even includes antioch, rio vista bridge, coming over in toward highway 4 through pittsburg and bay point. no problem for the tri-valley either. here is san ramon, dublin, livermore, great drive through castro valley. there is one issue on the map at the san mateo bridge, reports of something going on between the toll plaza and 880. i don't have any detail but i

domestic disturbance and officer corona killed responding to a crash in davis in january. it was an emotional night for both of their families. >> the last game i was in this park was with tara. >> it's emotional and at the same time it's very rewarding and very, what a tribute they paid these officers. >> both women were in their 20s and brand new to the job when they lost their lives. happening now a child recovering in an illinois hospital after two carnival rides collided last night. according to witnesses, the child was struck by debris from the ride. a nurse practitioner stepped in to help. he was taken to an area hospital where his condition is unknown at this time. and the 50th anniversary of the apollo 11, a great story by bob redell you're not going to want to miss.

i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington has had the week off. we're headed into the weekend. let's get a check of your traffic and your weather. >> the weather looks really nice, starting out with some clear skies, a little bit clearer as you head out this morning, from the north bay in to san francisco, golden gate bridge is looking nice. and so we're just going to see a few clouds for the next couple of hours and then clearing out. if you're headed out the door in fremont, expect some low 60s. headed into the upper 70s by early afternoon, with our highs today anywhere from 90 in ukiah to 65 in half moon bay. i'll sort it out as you make weekend plans. mike, you're seeing a south bay slowdown. >> i am. north 101 just north of 680/280, the overpass there is. i just saw an ambulance flashing lights travel past us, up toward presumably mckee, with reports of a crash involving a motorcycle but the detail in the report says the rider is in the center divide area, moved out of the lane, and so it does sound like the driver is able to get around. we'll track that, minor slowing
