there. i'm not sure what that was from, presumably from the vehicle. you see the jeep on the shoulder, northbound restoring the traffic flow. there is the jeep right there. you see the suv, burnt out shell. so they quickly put out that fire. you're seeing it as it happens. take to you the map, as all lanes reopen we'll see the traffic flow reinstate but we are jammed out of fremont and all the way up to tennison where the crash was. hopefully it will lighten up over the traffic that may have been diverted to dumbarton bridge. southbound was distracted but as the crews and activity eased up, things got better, getting toward hayward southbound as well and getting over from the bay bridge, you still have a slower drive but things are much better, now that the crash at ashby has cleared. those lanes are clear. >> we are seeing all clear skies as we look inland. right now looking live in walnut creek at least you have a nice easy start to the day. cool temperatures but it's going

to heat up. we'll be in the low 60s at 6:00, and then at 75 degrees at 9:00. up to 87 degrees at 1:00 today. as we check out all of our high temperatures for this afternoon, we do see some 90s here and this is going to be we have to get used to, because there's a lot more in the forecast. i'll talk more about that and what's ahead, it's coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. a tragic chain reaction crash in san francisco left one man dead, his wife is in the hospital in serious condition this morning. >> "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda joins us to explain how the accused driver obtained that tesla. police say it triggered the accident. >> this happened just outside of union square. its unclear whether the tesla was in autopilot mode. the accident occurred at the taylor and o'pharrell streets intersection. the driver ran a red light and

going about 45 miles per hour. the tesla hit a mini cooper and the tesla driver lost control, hitting two pedestrians in the intersection. police arrested the driver of the tesla yesterday for vehicular manslaughter. the victim killed identified as 39-year-old benjamin dean from the fresno area. you can see dean and his wife kelly on facebook yesterday posting video of their trip to the san francisco museum of ice cream. nbc bay area talked to the owner of the tesla yesterday who rented the tesla out to the driver. he says he was in the office when he got a message that said the tesla was not driverable and failed. >> the guy was saying your car is in accident. are you okay? i told him, i don't know because i share a car on getaround. >> police say this is a busy high tourist area and drivers need to slow down. the wife is at san francisco general hospital. police say so far, it does not

appear drugs or alcohol were a factor in this tragic accident. back to you. >> thank you, sharon. breaking news, iran says it's captured what it says are u.s. spies. the country accusing 17 people of working for the cia. the iranian intelligence ministry say they're all eye rain citizens. some arrested apparently sentenced to death. tracie potts is live on capitol hill. any reaction from washington? >> not yet. some sentenced to death as you said, scott, others to long jail sentences. the iranians say they were citizens applying for u.s. visas, and the cia turned them in the process of those applications, and now they've turned some of them back to spy on the u.s. we are also watching this back and forth continuing between president trump and four female lawmakers of color. he is now tweeted about them again. he's back on twitter this morning. a lot of reaction here in

anti-semitic and anti-american. for now, president trump is not backing down. neither are these four. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. 6:05, in a few hours two of three suspects arrested in connection with a 2016 deadly shooting inside of a vallejo pawn shop are expected in court. amoni and elijah summerise face murder and other charges. the pair along with cassius nelson were arrested following a more than two year long investigation. investigators say two of the man ran into the store, shot and killed the owner, then shot the clerk, who was in a wheelchair. while leaving the store, one of the men is accused of shooting and killing the owner's dog. new this morning, a man behind bars after a theft at a hardware store in petaluma. another suspect still on the loose. deputies are searching for this man, 28-year-old elliott mallone. he's already wanted on a felony warrant.

malone and his alleged accomplice john silva, are accused of walking out of friedman's home improvement store with power tools. deputies arrested silva a short time after the robbery. both malone who you see her, ran off, got away. deputies used a helicopter and a dog to search the area but were unable to find him. the mother of a little girl who died of cancer says her ashes were returned, stolen last week from a san jose cemetery. 2-year-old kelly lopez died of cancer four years ago. it's not clear why the ashes were stolen in the first place. this week, contra costa county leaders are set to vote on an increased fire facilities fee, paid by home and building developers on every project. the fee itself raises money for needed for the fire district. if passed, newly proposed fee would be 64% higher. the current fee is $591 per single family unit and $376 for 1,000 square feet of office space. supervisors will vote on that issue tomorrow morning. the car share, bike share but how about cup share? berkeley's new pilot program with a reusable cup service

wall street is set to open modestly higher this morning. the markets coming off their worst week since the end of may with the dow and nasdaq breaking a two-week winning streak. oil prices are the focus after iran seized a british flagged oil tanker over the weekend and on the watches for investors, data on housing, durable goods and second quarter gdp, also one of the busiest weeks of earnings season with several heavy hitters reporting including facebook, amazon and google's parent alphabet. equifax reached a deal to pay about $700 million to settle a probe by the federal trade comission and other regulators over a massive data breach in 2017. that incident exposed social security numbers and other private information of nearly 150 million people. the breach was one of the largest affecting consumers. equifax did not notice the attack for more than six weeks. and cbs and at&t blaming each other for a blackout of cbs stations on directv and uverse which started on saturday. stations in more than a dozen u.s. markets, including new york and los angeles went

maybe it's the way they dress him and do his hair? >> he's adorable for sure. >> can you imagine that? future king. >> also cool our forecast i san francisco, we're going to keep it cool there, while the valleys are going to be really hot, and then we take a look at the clouds now cering palo alto. we'll see this for a little while longer and our skies clearing, as we see those low 60s to start this morning, we'll see some low 80s by noon. after that, it's going to be quite a warm afternoon, reaching into the low 80s by 1:00 and we head across the bay to fremont. if you're about to step out the door, you may need a jacket now, but not so much today, as our temperatures there heat up into the low 80s as well by 1:00. let's get a look at all you have o of our microclimates. at 10:00 we're seeing mid-70s for many of our valleys, while san francisco, san mateo staying in the 60s, and then going into 2:00, it's up to 90 degrees

already in antioch, as well as fairfield. we're in the upper 80s in livermore, and 89 in al maden valley. going into 5:00 people headed out for dinner, headed home from work, going out for a walk, it is going to be one you have to take it a little bit easier and then later on tonight around sunset, it's going to start to cool off. that's when everybody heads out for a walk around around sunset. we've been talking about the hot weather for areas off to our east, across the east coast, the midwest, and the plains. they're going to catch some relief today and the temperatures coming back to the 70s and 80s for highs today. we're going to start to see those temperatures cranking up across the desert southwest as high pressure builds but there's also some monsoonal moisture being pulled up, and it's going to be brought in to parts of california over the next couple of days. we will still have that marine layer in the fog near the coast, but there will also be a chance of some thunder and more clouds over parts of the southern sierra. as we go throughout the week, we will have a little bit more in

the way of cloud cover tomorrow, but then the rest of the week, it clears out and gets really hot. look at these temperatures for the inland areas, reaching into the low to mid-90s. we go into the weekend, and it doesn't cool off that much, and san francisco that's where we kept some relief with 60s and 70s throughout the week. mike, you have sky ranger over a fire. >> a different fire. we had a car fire 880 northbound at tennison, still recovering from that. we'll talk about this, but you see the burnt grass here alongside 580. westbound 580 and eastbound 580, the burnout here a few acres i'm told but it looks like everything's okay. traffic is flowing but we'll take you out to the maps and show you it's way out, where folks are coming out of the altamont. by the time you get toward livermore and dublin, it's not affecting anything going on there. we have our eyes of course on those fires. looking toward the slowing, the other area not moving green. northbound 880 the buildup

each other in contra costa county. now deputies are trying to figure out if they're all related. the first attack happened last thursday night when a man was found unresponsive in the street in bay point. he later died. ten minutes later an assault with a deadly weapon nearby. the victim of that attack survived. authorities have now arrested a 20-year-old antioch man and a 24-year-old bay point man. both are charged with assault with a deadly weapon, felony battery and conspiracy. puerto rico's governor saying he won't run for re-election. protesters say that's not enough. they want him to leave office now. demonstrators have been demanding the resignation of the governor since the revelation of offensive leaked text messages. it showed that he and his close advisers insulted women and mocked constituents, including victims of hurricane maria. yesterday the governor released a video statement saying he plans to step down as leader of his party and not seek

re-election as governor but he has no plans to resign his office. thousands of customers in new york city still in the dark this morning. mayor bill de blasio tweeting the city's power company took 30,000 customers offline to make repairs and prevent a larger outage. early sunday there were more widespread outages in brooklyn and queens. it comes as a blistering heat wave bakes areas from the carolinas to maine. the latest outage is not tied to the major power outage that left part of new york city in darkness for hours more than a week ago. 6:23 right now. one of its most famous planes in modern history will be disassembled and put in storage. a bir hit the plane disabling both engines. pilot sulry sullenberger managed to land it in the hudson saving all passengers. it sits on display in north

you have that refreshing shot of san francisco. it's going to be a lot hotter in san jose as we reach into the mid 80s. temperatures by early afternoon and up to 86 degrees will be our high temperature in the south bay, but look at morgan hill, antioch, 93 degrees and up to 94 in ukiah today. we'll talk about the wide range in temperatures and what's ahead but mike, you're checking out another brush fire? >> with the help of sky ranger there, now headed up toward the concord area, from where they were originally a lly a few min ago near the altamont pass. let's get you out to the area where they head over to look at 242. just off 242 the connector between highway 4 and 680, there's a brush fire reported so we're tracking that. it doesn't really appear to have the effect on traffic flow but again we'll follow that because it's a big concern, dry hillsides everywhere. westbound highway 4 approaching willow pass road an earlier

crash looks like it's causing slowing. another crash causes a little slowing through richmond for west 80. overall a good drive even recovery for hayward from the earlier crash there. scott, back to you. >> mike, a new report reveals i.c.e. for years used oakland airport to deport tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants. despite the fact that oakland is a sanctuary city. "today in the bay's" pete suratos live from oakland with more detail. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you. as you mentioned, oakland sanctuary city status has really put it at odds with president trump and the trump administration over the years so that makes this report that much more interesting. now let's talk about this new report, it comes to us from the bay area news group. it shows the oakland airport was the staging ground for nearly a thousand flights chartered by u.s. immigration and customs enforcement between 2010 and 2018. the flights were booked to either deport immigration det n detainees or move them to another detention center. the report says i.c.e. moved 43,000 people in and out of that airport during that time period, and according to that report,

says that i.c.e. agents actually stopped chartering these flights out of oakland back in october of last year. as i mentioned, president trump and oakland mayor libby schaaf have clashed on this issue in the past when it comes to the sanctuary city status most notably the mayor warned of an immigration raid in the city. the trump administration was none too pleased about it. we reached out to the mayor about the report. reporting live in oakland,s abouts. for ed pete suratos for "today in the bay." happening today, immigration issues will likely be front and center when bay area congressman anna eshoo holds a town hall in the south bay. she returned from a visit to two detention centers on the texas border. she met with immigrant families and volunteers. that town hall takes place at 6:30 at the mountain view community center. concord police trying to track down a driver in a deadly hit-and-run. a motorcyclist struck a car a

little after midnight. investigators then say a pickup truck came by, striking and killing the motorcyclist as he was on the ground. friends of the motorcyclist are in shock. >> he was the nicest guy i ever met. i mean, he was funny. he never judged people. he was kind. >> the victim lived in clayton near the scene of the accident. so far police have not provided us a more detailed description of the truck they're looking for. we have new details on a lawsuit meant to block pg&e from raising rates to pay for destructive and deadly wildfires, that's the crux of a new lawsuit filed against state leaders and the state's puc. governor newsom says it restores confidence but the suit names state lawmakers and puc claiming it rewards utilities and their private investors for negligence. take a look at this, a new and tricky way to merge with unique freeway interchange may soon be coming to your morning

commute and may leave you a little confused. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live in alameda county. it could leave people challenged if they've never seen it before. >> reporter: correct, laura. the traffic engineers argue it will be safer for drivers once they get used to it. think about your typical freeway interchange, you usually come to a stop sign or stoplight and have to most likely turn left into oncoming traffic. that's not the case with the diverging diamond interchange or ddi, and i suggest you take a look of ayour tv screen and check out this animation. when you exit the freeway in a ddi configuration, you veer at 45-degree angle across the center divide. you come to a stoplight, then you cross sides with the opposing traffic. you are now briefly driving on the left side of the road. you have the option for a smooth transition onto a new direction to travel on the freeway or crisscross back to the right side of the road to resume

travel in the current direction. the number of conflict points, are almost cut in half from 26 in a traditional left-hand turn interchange to 14 with the ddi, according to traffic engineers. the "san francisco chronicle" reports engineers are considering this design for the ashby avenue interchange in i-80 in berkeley. one is already in construction in san joaquin county, two more planned for the central valley and utah and nevada already have the ddis. report live in alameda county, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. will you check your phone on your ride home to work? >> you're not supposed to. what about your work? troubling numbers shows driver and pedestrian deaths are on the rise, the highest number of deaths in 30 years. this morning on "today" kerry sanders shadows police on the

and small crash on 85, getting more detail just north of 87. we had the earlier fire reported just off of 580, slow out of the altamont pass. that fire about five acre. it is out. there was an unrelated crash in the area, also cleared. 580 moving through dublin and livermore, just fine. getting to the bay bridge a smooth flow of traffic. contra costa county 242 a fire on brush on the shoulder there. sky ranger is headed over to that scene as well. we have dry hills all over the bay so that's always a concern whenever we see the smallest brush fire reported. >> when the temperatures get hot as well. i think they'll do that come this weekend? >> yes, it's going to be hot throughout the week. take a look at this seven-day forecast, as you try to make some plans. it's going to be in the 90s for our inland areas. pretty much from now through at least saturday and sunday. we're up to 92 on saturday, and not much cooler on sunday, 88 degrees, but we do catch some relief along the coast and in

san francisco, staying in the upper 60s there. so we are going to have some places where you can go and cool off. so if you're making beach plans, it's going to be in the mid-70s in santa cruz for both saturday and sunday, just a few clouds passing by at times. if you're going to yosemite this weekend, expect it to be warm, going from 82 degrees on friday to 85 on saturday, and up to 86 degrees on sunday. all clear skies, and hot temperatures in napa valley this weekend, and it will reach into the upper 80s on friday, but then look at saturday, that's the hottest day of the weekend, reaching 93 degrees. if you're going to l.a., upper 70s there, and mostly sunny skies. now, i know it's early in the week, but maybe you're already thinking of what to do this weekend. let me know where you're headed and i can help you with the forecast, @karihallweather on facebook, twitter ayn instagram. we'll talk about what's going on today coming up in three minutes. >> we'll look forward to it. thanks. 6:39, brand new overnight,

this is jamming up 242 headed off of highway 4 to 680. i'll show you maybe a quicker way or better way to avoid this backup. >> thanks so much, kari and mike. it's 6:43 right now. one of our top stories, a man is dead. his wife severely hurt after a crash involving a rented tesla in a high traffic area just outside of san francisco's union square. the accident occurred at the taylor and o'pharrell streets intersection. the driver ran a red light and going about 45 miles per hour. the tesla hit a mini cooper and the tesla driver lost control, hitting two pedestrians in the intersection. nbc bay area talked to the owner of the tesla yesterday who rented that tesla out to the driver. he says he was in his office when he got a message that said the tesla was not drivable and something failed. >> then i received a follow-up call from tesla roadside assistance and the guy was saying your car is in accident. are you okay? i told him, i don't know, because i share a car on getaround.

>> the victim who was killed has been identified as 39-year-old benjamin dean from the fresno area. >> 6:44. firefighters and chp investigating this overnight car fire under a highway 4 overpass. happened on franklin canyon road in hercules around 1:30 this morning. drivers spotted the flames and called 911. firefighters needed about a half an hour to get it out. but no sign of the driver. no lungering effects from a broken water main on a busy contra costa county boulevard. crews in pleasant hill spent much of yesterday fixing that break. happened early yesterday morning, just north of crescent plaza. the problem was big enough they had to tear up and repair a segment of the road. the roadway reopened last night. one of the busiest weekends this summer for rescue cruise along the american river. >> more than 30 people had to be

pulled from the water at different spots in sacramento county. unfortunately in one of those incidents, somebody drowned. firefighters say many of those rescued were on rafts that got snagged on branches or debris. making matters more dangerous, some taking to the water this weekend not wearing life vests. >> i warned a guy because he didn't have the little kid, the kid didn't have a life vest on. i said hey, man, the ranger will cite you if you don't wear a vest and he goes, thank you, and they floated off. >> firefighters recommend rafters stay hydrate, drink plenty of water, wear a hat and bring a cell phone and notify first responders if you become stranded. happening now an urgent recall to tell you about. neutrogena is recalling its light therapy acne mask. there are concerns about possible eye damage. the mask uses a combination of red and blue light to fight acne and clear up skin. these masks have gained popularity after celebrities like kate hudson and emma stone shared photos of themselves using similar devices. if you have one, you can return it for a full refund.

from the north bay, it is foggy, and it's really thick in that one spot, while most of san francisco starting to clear out. so we're going to see that linger throughout the day, taking you hour by hour, you can see that marine layer and the fog that's right there in san francisco, and along the coastline, even into this afternoon, but all clear for the inland areas. we have a lot of sunshine, and this is going to cause a wide range in temperatures all throughout the day, but it will clear out as we go into this evening, and then roll right back in. and because we are going to have some hot temperatures in the valleys and spots like san ramon, try to get out early if you want to gut out for a workout, going for a run. any time before 10:00 is comfortable. after that, it will reach into the 80s, upper 80s by 1:00 today. as we go to the south bay, expect some 90s in the south county from morgan hill down to gilroy and cupertino reaching 87 degrees. we'll see a high of 92 in pleasanton today.

in fremont, up to 84 degrees. it's going to stay cool and breezy in half moon bay. up to 65 in daly city and san francisco staying mostly in the 60s today while the north bay tops out at 94 in ukiah. mill valley up to 84 degrees. it will be nice and cool out at the giants game this evening. if you're going there expect temperatures upper 60s first pitch dropping down to the lower 60s and all clear skies, really nice evening. as we go throughout the week there will be a few changes ahead. high pressure sets up across the desert southwest and causes a surge of monsoonal moisture. we're not going to see too much in the way of changes. the fog stays near the bay area and we could also see a few more clouds moving in tomorrow but the rest of the week it just gets hot and our inland temperatures are going to reach into the low to mid-90s. so we go through the forecast with no cooldown here over the

next seven days. in fact, it gets hotter as we approach thursday and san francisco staying in the upper 60s and low 70s. mike, how is it looking now in the east bay? >> kari, we had a couple of issues. a crash over here approaching the merge of 580, that's westbound 80 through richmond. looks like everything's off to the shoulder. you may have your slow lane affected by the crew bewe see minor slowing, recovery from an earlier slowdown and approaching the caldecott. not a major issue. the traffic alert for a few short minutes here, head south, all the minutes are the same length. in any case southbound 242 recovering from earlier closures. those lanes are all open after a brush fire alongside 242. it is still jammed through the area. so you want to probably take highway 4 over here and take 680 down, it's a little bit farther than folks do. we like the cut-through but the corner is the better route today and better issue but no problems for contra costa county outside from the earlier fire, a smooth

flow of the earlier fire, 580 has also been cleared out of the altamont pass and looking at the crash i told you i'd check that out at the bottom of your screen, it's southbound 85, so the northbound slowing is just from the commute traffic flow. it's not a problem there. a live look shows you how things are across the san mateo bridge, also the normal commute flow as to the volume, slowing the traffic westbound but it's quite manageable headed toward the peninsula, and the bay bridge toll plaza, we've seen good movement from the fastrak lanes, that is good movement and now the cash lanes starting to ease up a little bit over on the left approach as well. laura, back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. 6:52. happening now, breaking news out of africa. a bombing in somalia has killed at least 17, another 28 hurt. happened at a hotel near the international airport in mogadishu. an al qaeda linked islamic group is claiming responsibility for that attack. the group trying to topple the somalian government. next on "today in the bay" a quick look at top stories. we have breaking news overfright

before you head out the door here are the top stories we're covering on "today in the bay." >> iran says it's captured what it claims are u.s. spies accusing 17 people of working for the cia. the iranian intelligence ministry says they're all iranian citizens. some of those arrested have apparently been sentenced to death. so far, u.s. officials have not commented. new overnight equifax reached a deal to pay $700 million to settle a probe by the federal trade comission over a massive data breach in 2017. the incident exposed social security numbers and other private information from nearly all or half of all americans. the breach was one of the largest affecting consumers. equifax didn't notice the attack for more than six years. two of three suspects arrested in connection with a 2016 deadly shooting inside of a vallejo pawn shop are expected in court. amoni and elijah summerise face murder and other charges. the pair along with cassius

nelson were arrested following a more than two year long investigation. investigators say two of the man ran into the store, shot and killed the owner, then shot the clerk, who was in a wheelchair. while leaving the store, one of the men is accused of shooting and killing the owner's dog. a new report reveals i.c.e. used oakland airport for years to deport people despite oakland's sanctuary city status. this is a live look from that airport. the bay area news group uncovered the information from an i.c.e. database. over the last nine years, i.c.e. used the airport for 1,000 charter flights, in one case deporting detainees, in others transporting them. in those nine years 27,000 people were deported. i.c.e. ended the practice last october. oakland leaders have not said if they knew about the flights. we reached out to the mayor's office and are awaiting a response. this week, contra costa county leaders are set to vote on an increased fire facilities fee, if it passed this new

proposed fee would be 64% higher. right now it's $591 per single family unit. $376 for a thousand square feet of office space. supervisors will vote on that issue tomorrow. new detail this is morning 6,000 square feet of art is taking shape at the santa clara county fairgrounds. the murals commemorate the 75th anniversary of the county fair, which opens august 1st. each of the country's 15 cities and towns are depicted. layla jamellos is the artist in charge. when she was 9 years old she won the best of 50th anniversary. >> i'm fortunate to get to tell kids that your dreams can come true because i'm out here doing it and i believe so zrostrongly giving back to our community and this is a place that needs a little love and i got it. i'm so glad to get to share it. >> i love that her dreams came true, too. that's cool. she hired 16 different artists and groups, interning from the county social services
