bull lets in the words of one person. to normally access this garlic fest, walk down this road, past security guards with wands through a metal detector. but police say he bypassed that. cut a hole in a perimeter fence and accessed the festival. people saw him approach the normal festival. he was a man in his 20s or 30s wearing a camouflage shirt and cap carrying a long rifle. a woman selling honey at the festival says two of her co-workers were shot. she watched the shooter reload and then ran for her life. >> only 10, 15 feet away from us. he was loading his clip before he went to our booth and shooting. he was shooting random. he didn't pick that booth. he was just shooting. he wasn't trying anybody particularly. anybody in his way, i guess. >> reporter: it was clear to you he wasn't targeting anyone spec >> no. he was just shooting. >> what was going through your save your life.
4:05 am
way. scary. wondering if there's any more and wondering why, why would somebody want to do this? doesn't make sense. why would somebody want to come in and kill innocent people. >> reporter: that's a good question. they engaged the suspect after a minute of shooting and one officer shot and killed the man. bob redell today in the bay. >> bob, thank you. as we mentioned, one of the three people shot and killed at the gilroy garlic festival was a 6-year-old boy, stephen ramero died. two other members of his family was also shot. >> we have more from that little boy's father. so tragic, ally. >> reporter: yeah, laura, marcus. just absolutely heart breaking to think about the fact that a 6-year-old boy was one of the a last night at the gilroy garlic

festival. right now we're at theo wreuniting last night. we did speak toramero's father night at the hospital. he told us that his son had just turned 6. he reached out to nbc bay area last night wanting to talk about his son and the tragedy that he's experiencing. he also shared photos of stephen. he says his son was a happy boy who had his whole life ahead of him. the 6-year-old was at the garlic festival yesterday with his mother and his grand mother, they were shot as well. so three members of this family shot. ramero says his wife and mother-in-law were take on the a hospital in san jose. that is where they got their treatment for their gunshot wounds. take a listen to what alberto ramiro had to say about losing his son in such a tragic way. >> hopefully they get the lost.
4:07 am
nothing i really can do besides wherever that is. my son had his whole life to live. he was only 6. that's all i can say. >> reporter: and you can imagine how emotional this is for that family and that father. stephen ramiro died last night at st. louise hospital. albert toe ra marrow tells us his wife was shot in her hand and he thinks his mother-in-law was shot in her leg. he also tells us he thinks they will be able to recover from their injury. still, such a tragedy for this family dealing with this shock of what happened last night. one of many families dealing with a lot of heart break today and coming up at 4:30, you're going to hear again from alberto ra marrow about the moment he found out about the shooting.

4:11 am
follow that breaking news in gilroy. here )s a live look---- 4:11. we continue to follow breaking news from gilroy. in fact a live look. we have multiple cameras and crews at the scene where a gunman opened fire yesterday at the gilroy garlic festival all happened at christmas hill park. the gunman was also killed. witnesses have said there may be a second suspect. it's unclear that person's involvement, if any, in the mass shooting. there were multiple helicopters flying overhead as the search was continuing. the investigation, of course, sun folding. the fbi, atf expected to arrive on the scene later today as well. christa moore keeping track of what happened and where.
4:12 am
>> he'll show us exactly where it appears that shooting took place and whether the search is on going for the second shooter. >> good morning. let's take two looks at this. first a wider view on this map and a second view on this zoomed in map. first this is the lay of the land. this is where theestil is taking place in christmas hill park. over to the right, this is a mile here. we have gilroy high school where the command center was set up. down here is where the reunification center is taking place. people inside of the festival being reunited with their families. now, let's talk about what we know about where the shooting took place based on what our reporters have heard, what we have seen on social media from people who are inside the park at the time as well as from the police chief. first, let's start with the police chief. he told uts us that the suspect or suspects came across the creek. the creek is in green. running along the north side of the park grounds which are right here. the chief said that that suspect
4:13 am
or suspects somehow managed to get across that creek and into a parking area. i'm going to plot that out with an icon right here. this is a parking area that runs along the north side of the grounds but is just south of the creek. so at some point they managed to get in on this side of the park, it seems. the park isn't very big, so it's possible that they could have traversed the park and begun shooting up to the north or possibly down to the south. we just don't know. but we can begin to narrow down where we think the shooting took place based on our various reporters reports. marian is reported up here and she said the people told her the shooting was coming from her right, which was on this side over here. we also saw on social media various people saying that they heard the gunshots coming from their right when they were near the stage. well, this is a stage right here. if they were facing a stage that direction, it's entirely possible that the shots were coming from this direction right
4:14 am
here. another data point tara mcsweeney had a story telling us that there might have been shots fired near a rock climbing wall with children on it. that was located right here and this perhaps is where the shooting took place where you see this red exclamation point. now, another bit of information that the police chief gave us was that his officers were able to return fire and knock down one of the suspects within one minute of the shooting. we think we can understand why because, as it turns out, up here to the north where one of the five gates is located, there was a security check point located right here. but then also a simple ptioolic right here near that rock climbing wall, it was very close to the police booth and perhaps that explains how they were able to respond so very quickly. now, the one thing that made all of this so very difficult is that the search began almost immediately for that second suspect. as you can see from this map here, it gets very rural very fast. as we zoom back out, you can see
4:15 am
on this map, you can see the roads and neighborhoods to the southwest and southeast there's very little out there. a wide expanse for the police, sheriff and federal agents who were trying to find that second suspect. >> when you see all of that played out, it just puts it in perspective of just how this person plotted to bring out this terror attack. >> very much so. he cut through the fence to get in. that's what's so concerning. so it will be interesting to know more about the gunman and also motive behind this as well and if there was accomplices. we're following all that and expect a press conference later on this morning as well as 10:00 a.m. we'll stay on live. we're coming live with the latest details from the tragedy in gilroy. >> 4:15. kerry has a look at the forecast as well as traffic. >> yeah. as you get ready to head out on the roads this morning, looking live in palo alto and highway 101, our temperatures will be much cooler today after a really hot weekend. we do have some good news on that front.
