and a good tuesday morning to you, july 30th. taking a live look outside in downtown san jose. a beautiful way to wake up this morning. and thanks so much for starting your morning here with us on "today in the bay." i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. let's get to that forecast. it's nice right now. >> really nice this morning. we'll have another beautiful day. really enjoyed yesterday. here say live look in walnut creek looking a little bit hazy as you get ready to step out the door. we have upper 50s to start and low 70s by early, i should say later this morning, headed into early afternoon with the south bay high temperatures reaching into the mid 80s. we're going to see gilroy up to 85, while san jose tops out at 79. we'll talk more about this as we get a look at our early traffic commute. overall the maps are looking

nice, but as you head up the peninsula, right there on highway 101 we've got a couple of issues. th closed at northbound 101 at whipple avenue, so just watching that a little bit of construction traffic going on, nothing out of the usual we are seeing so as you get ready to head out, everything is looking good so we'll talk more about weather and traffic coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. breaking news in contra costa county, where there's major police activity in rodeo. this is new video into our newsroom, the scene is third street and vallejo avenue. an ambulance was seen leaving that scene and one person in handcuffs. to remember the victims of the garlic festival shooting. we now know the ages of the three people who were killed by the gunman. santino william legan was the shooter in that situation. all of those who died were young, ages 6, 13 and 25 and it's possible authorities will hold another news conference later today, but that's still not certain. as of those seven victims still in the hospital it's likely all still have a long road to rehe bry's" ali wolf live at san jose's medical center with more details on those who survived and sadly thnot. good morning, ali. >> reporter: good morning, laura. yeah, we're still learning a lot about everyone who was affected by this shooting at the garlicf. we do know at last check there are a total of seven people still in hospitals throughout the area, and five here in the hospital at valley medical center in san jose, and as you mentioned, we do now know all

the identities of the three people who were shot and killed on sunday night. they're all very young. they are the youngest 6-year-old stephen romero, 13-year-old kayla salazar was also killed, both of them from san jose and the third victim 25-year-old trevor irby, recent graduate from a college in upstate new york, he was visiting and last night we spoke once again with stephen romero's father. he got emotional and he was talking about the moment he got the news that his son was shot andn last time. >> i couldn't imagine someone shooting at the garlic festival. shai"they shot him, they shot him" and after that, i basically raced over there to try to see if, you know, make sure he was okay, and hopefully i could see him before anything very, you know, bad happened to him like him passing away but i

ain't get the chance to. >> so heart-breaking what he must have gone through. stephen romero's mother and grandmother were also shot. a huge tragedy for that family. his father tells us that they are both recovering at stanford hospital. they are expected to be okay and to recover from their injuries. he tells us they might even be able to come home in a week or so, but still clearly a long road to recovery for everyone involved, but there is a little bit of good news for some of the victims. the hospital told us yesterday that here in san jose, at least one of the victims has bdion to serious condition, but still really tough for so many people who were shot or who were affected by this shooting. reporting live in san jose this morning, ali wolf for "today in the bay." >> hope they recover. thank you very much, ali. some really incredible stories of survival are also emerging especially among those closest to everything that happened.

>> and the relative of two of the people who ran a booth at the garlic festival and who are also shot, well that person says that the couple was the first to confront that gunman and "today in the bay's" roz plater reports the gunman fired point blank. >> reporter: from sky ranger you can see the area where the honey ladies company set up their booth. just behind it is where christine says her sister first spotted the gunman climb over the fence. >> the first thing she did was run and confront him. she got within ten feet of him, told him a few choice words and said "you are not going to do this here. this is not going to happen." he then shot her. >> reporter: she says her brother-in-law came running and the gunmant him, too. >> she said he walked up to her and her husband and stood above them and asked them, "are you okay?" in a calm voice? >> she said the couple played dead fearing he would try to finish them off and the

suspected shooter's gun jammed. >> he then dropped the gun magazine right next to her hea,. and loaded another and just opened fire on, towards her booth and everyare. >> the granddaughter of one of the workers likely saved the life of the couple's 3-year-old son >> thank god for that little 10-year-old girl who saw him running for his mom and dad on the ground and snatched him up and put him under the table with her and laid on top of him to shield him. that was the bravest thing i've ever heard. >> reporter: with the couple down, a friend tried desperately to stop their bleeding until paramedics arrived. >> i pulled my shirt off and tied it as a tourniquet around his upper thigh. >> reporter: the couple have had multiple surgeries, face many more and a long recovery. friends and family have set up a go fund me account to help. in san jose, i'm roz plater,

"nbc bay area news." >> tough there. the fbi now reaching out to anyone who can help put together what happened during that mass shooting in gilroy. agents are asking for photos or videos to assist in that investigation. the bureau has set up its own website, type in "tips.fbi.gov/gilroy." this is where you can upload the photos and video and you can also call gilroy's police department. even though gilroy schools are on summer break, some schools still going on at gilroy, christopher high school where crisis counselors are available for any and all students, teachers and staff. the counselors will be on hand at least through tomorrow. we are following developments on air and online. we've also put up a special section on our home page devoted to the investigation and the shooting aftermath with time lines, personal survival stories as well. you can find it all at nbcbayarea.com. 4:37, and coming up here on

good morning. i'm kate rogers at cnbc headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street is set to open slightly lower this morning following a mixed session for stocks yesterday. investors are awaiting tomorrow's decision by the federal reserve. the markets widely expect the fed to cut interest rates to offset any potential slowdown in the economy. on today's watch list, reports on personal income and spending, home sales and consumer confidence, plus earnings from apple. capital one says it suffered a massive data breach earlier this year, exposing information from about 100 million customers in the u.s., and another 6 million in canada. the company says only a small amount of social security and bank account numbers were compromised, but the hacker also got access to information from credit card applications, such as names, addresses, date of birth a. a suspect has been arrested,

nets signed kevin durant. that's my kind of working out. >> that's the most generic stance everybody does, hey guys, take a picture. they set. that's my guy. you know? >> working out. >> part of the scissor finger mafia. >> welcome to the bay. >> all right, let's get started this morning,outside in seven-day forecast. it's coming up at the bottom of the screen, starting in the south bay, let's get you out the door in oak lanland, at the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station we have a lot of clouds and we'll gradually see it clear up as we thrgh the day. you'll probably wear your jacket throughout the morning with temperatures staying in the 60s there. looking at our south bay high temperatures even though we have a cool start it's going to be a very nice afternoon, reaching the upper 70s. this is actually cooler than normal, and so as we go into parts of the south county, it does warm up a few more degrees with morgan hill up to 84 degrees. we're up to 84 also in pittsburg

with vallejo topping out at 76. oakland today 67 degrees and also cooler along the coastline, as that fog lingers throughout the day. we'll see some breezy winds and redwood city reaching 74 degrees. 62 in the marina district and some breezy winds in the north bay, up to 88 in ukiah, while mill valley reaches 76 degrees. a live look outside in san jose once again, as you're getting dressed this morning. you do need a jacket to start, but it's a day where you have a jacket on in the morning and shorts in the afternoon, especially once those winds start to pick up and we get all that sunshine, iday. but the cooldown is on. the high pressure asm us, and i allowing for a storm system to approach the pacific northwest. with that, we're getting much more of a breezy wind, some coastal fog, that the high pressure does build back into the bay area, a little bit closer, as we get into the weekend, and's that that's goin

temperatures to warm up. we're in the 80s in some spots and low 90s for saturday and sunday. it will heat up this weekend but stays cool in san francisco and along the coastline, as we continue to see temperatures that will stay on the cool side. as we get a look at your drive this morning, getting out the door, w h lot of green sensors across the bay area, and so we are seeing a pretty smooth drive, except for a little bit of a slowdown on 84 crossing through livermore over toward fremont, so we'll continue to watch that, but overall the commute issing looking pretty we see this time of morning but cones and the traffic is recovering. in the58 grant line road to 680 it's looking pretty good now at about 20 minutes but it is starting to slow down. westbound 84 once again

vallecitos road right now at about 12 minutes it takes to you get to 680. so we'll continue to watch that and also the rest of the bay area. i'll have another update coming up in about ten minutes. >> thank you, kari. continuing coverage for you now, investigators are providing a better picture of the chaotic scene at the gilroy garlic festival, breaking down exactly what happened during those terrifying moments. >> investigators say the gunman santino william legan entered christmas hill park at a wired fence at around 5:ooting. responding officers killed him within one minute. three victims killed, 6-year-old stephen romero, 13-year-old kayla salar and 25-year-old trevor irby. 12 others were injured. a possible second suspect was never identified. an alert for you this morning, police and fire crews in san ramon will receive training on how to respond to an active shooter situation. training gets under way at california high school at 8:00

this morning. there will be signs posted along broadmoor drive to alert neighbors and people driving by about the training taking place at the school. that training was previously scheduled before the rampage in gilroy. developing right now in antioch, poleshooting involving popeye's restaurant. it happened about 6:00 last night on lone tree way near hillcrest. the employee who was shot was air lifted fro m e their condition. llice suspect's home. neither the victim nor suspect are being identified. bat bay area teenager of accused of a deadly stabbing of a police officer in italy is claiming to be self-defense as a photo surrounding the case is getting global attention. that photo shows 18-year-old gabriel najjar blind-folded and handcuffed in police custody. he and another former tamalpais high school student are in custody. journalists say that they work

in the bay area for the italy newspaper that published that photo. it has not been independently verified by nbc news but sarcina says the image is causing outrage in italy. >> everybody has the right to be treated fair, so that was totally unacceptable, and all the italian people are thinking this way. >> italy police or italian police say that stabbing stemmed from a fight with plain clothed officers and that apparently followed a drug deal gone bad. 4:53 right now. coming up here on "today in the bay," thinking of buying a first home in the bay area? don't try to do it empty handed. next, the new numbers showing just how mucneed to make the ha crash involving two buss in hong kong under investigation this morning. 77 people were hurt. two people suffered serious injuries. one of the bus drivers became trapped after the crash, but was

4:56 right now. another startling study shows just how hard it is for new home buyers to crack the bay area market. home prices in the bay area have climbed four times faster than local incomes. clever real estate says that means a typical family needs nearly nine times the average household income to buy a home. that is the nation's highest ratio. for comparison, in the 1960s, buyers paid about twice the median annual income for a house. trending this morning, the disney channel getting tens across the board from members of the lgbtq community. the series finale of andy mack, cyrus starts a relationship with t.j., the pair shown holding hands, the first time ever a gay teenage couple was portrayed on a disney show. fans went wild and messages of report on twitter. they gave the actors the
