kamala harris over her medicare for all health care plan which phases in over ten years. >> anytime someone tells you you're going to get something good in ten years you should wonder why it takes ten years. you can't beat president trump with double talk on this plan. >> reporter: harris hitting back on biden please which aims to expand obamacare. >> in 2019 in america for a democrat to be running for president with a plan that does not cover everyone i think is without excuse. >> my plan will cover everyone. >> reporter: biden accusing harris and his other critics of distorting his record. >> this idea is a bunch of malarkey. >> cory booker hitting biden for sponsoring the controversial 1994 crime bill arguing it still has ripple effects today. >> we have a system right now that's broken, and if you want to compare records, and frankly i'm shocked that you do -- >> why did you announce in the first day a zero tolerance policy.

>> mr. vice president, there's a thing in my community, you're dipping into the kool-aid and you don't even know the flavor. >> reporter: why he personally tried to stop the deportations under president obama. >> did you go to the president and say, this is a mistake, we shouldn't do it? which one? >> i was vice president, i am not the president. i keep my recommendation in private, unlike you. he moved to fundamentally change the system. >> reporter: the night was also a rematch between biden and harris, over that dramatic moment in the first debate when harris said biden was wrong to oppose bussing as a senator in the 1970s. >> this vice president has still failed to acknowledge that it was wrong to take the position that he took at that time. >> biden arguing their positions are actually the same, and tried to turn the tables. attacking her record as attorney general of california. >> there were two of the most segregated school districts in the country, in los angeles, and in san francisco. and she did not -- i didn't see a single solitary time she brought a case against them to

desegregate them. >> reporter: harris also found herself on the defensive from tulsi gabbard. there are too many examples to cite. she put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and then laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana. >> reporter: harris insisting e's proud of her record as attorney general. but the candidates saved sharpest words for someone not on stage, president trump. >> we can no longer allow a white nationalist to be in the white house. >> the first thing that i'm going to do when i'm president is i'm going to clorox the oval office. >> reporter: meantime, kristen, there was another moment last night that went viral when vice president biden had a text number. what was this all about? >> reporter: that's right, savannah and willie, this happened during biden's closing remarks when he seemed to confuse his text donation number with his campaign website. take a look. >> if you agree with me, go to joe 30330 and help me in this

fight. >> reporter: so that was a moment that quickly went viral, and could fuel criticism he's not the right candidate for this moment. bottom line, though, these debates were really critical because for so many candidates it is going to be determinative of whether they get into the next round of debates in the fall. it's going to be even tougher to qualify for those debates, savannah and willie. >> kristen, thank you very much. we broke down the debates opening night with claire mccaskill. she's back for more. now we have night two. senator, good morning. >> good morning. >> we saw the former vice president joe biden taking the shots. how did he hold up? was his performance better than the first debate? was it good enough? >> much better. on style points he was strong, he was aggressive. he appeared comfortable and frankly, friendly. and, you know, i think sometimes we forget, when we're picking all this apart, you know him

saying go to joe, as opposed to text to joe, most voters could care less about that stuff. what they want is someone that they feel comfortable with and that gets their problems and i think he did a pretty good job. they're going to pick him -- they're going to pick his bones clean because he's way ahead. as long as he's ahead it's going to be incoming for joe biden. >> no one should be surprised if folks are on joe biden. they need to knock him down a notch. were you surprised on the attacks on the affordable care act, or on president obama's record on deportation. getting to joe biden through president obama. >> very dangerous strategy, i think, and if it continues i think it could come -- there could be some serious splashback on those candidates. going after the obama administration in a democratic primary seems a little nutty to me and that was kind of what they were doing last night but i don't think joe biden did a good enough job explaining what the positives of obama's record as

it relates to immigration. and i don't think he did a good enough job, frankly, explaining how badly this administration is trying to tear apart the protections that obamacare brought the united states. >> what about senator kamala harris? most people felt like she had a breakout moment at the first debate, so lots of eyes on her. now the attacks were coming to her as well, on these second debates. how did she fare? >> i think she did okay. you know, clearly it appeared that maybe she wasn't as used to being attacked. when you start getting attacked that's the moment you have to really stay calm and remain friendly and, i think that maybe wobbled her just a bit. overall she's a very strong, smart woman. she will stay in this until much later in the process. you know what i want most of all, can we get rid of some of these candidates? it's giving me a headache. >> do you think that these candidates have any incentive to get out of the race? >> maybe at this next debate, winnows the field by the

requirements, i think it's a good thing our party's done that because i'd like to see us get down to seven or eight candidates going forward so people can focus on the differences and contrasts. it's a blur. there's just too damn many. >> we always like you for being plain spoken. breaking news overnight in kentucky, where a gas line ruptures, sparked a deadly explosion and a fire ball that was felt across the region. nbc's ron mott has the latest for us. good morning. >> reporter: officials say at least one person is dead -- a woman. several have been hospitalized. this morning, still others are unaccounted for, all because of the blast overnight that is an emergency situation still unfolding. authorities say the fire is out but the debris is still smoldering. >> it's so bright. >> reporter: overnight a gas explosion in kentucky, ripping through a rural residential area killing one woman and setting several houses on fire. a ruptured gas line was the

cause of the explosion, crews shutting off the gas, authorities evacuating residents of a nearby mobile home park. >> the next phase of this effort will be to identify folks that are missing. i think there's five to seven persons that we don't actually know their whereabouts. >> reporter: the explosion, jolting terrified residents out of bed. >> it woke us up and it was a big roar and fire going all the way up in the sky, as far as you could see. >> reporter: witnesses said they could see flames from several miles away. >> it looked like an atomic bomb went off, basically. a big cloud of smoke go up and i could hear the thrust off of it. >> we actually thought it could have been an airplane crash because it was so -- the roaring was really loud. you could hear the ground just moving and tumbling and rolling. >> reporter: the terrifying moments causing some to flee their homes and the heat of fire without looking back. >> don't know. we just left it. didn't care. it was like it was just right in our front door.

it was scary. >> reporter: this blast occurred about 2:00 in the morning. officials tell us that a shelter has been set up at a local church for residents who were evacuated overnight. this fireball was very impressive. one meteorologist said it was so large it showed up on radar, flames shooting about 300 feet into the air. guys? >> ron, thanks very much. now to a major story tied to the fight against terror, the death of osama bin laden's son eight years after u.s. forces killed the al qaeda leader but this morning the circumstances surrounding his son's killing are not exactly clear. courtney kube has more details. good morning. >> reporter: osama bin laden's son was heir apparent to his father 's t father 's t's terrorem pyre. officials are saying he's dead but little else about how he died and what role the u.s. government may have played. he was being groomed to follow in his late father's footsteps

and to take over as the next generation's leader of the terror organization. replacing ayman al zawari. he was the most charismatic, religious and militant of osama bin laden's sons died sometime in the last two years but confirmation of his death came only recently according to three u.s. officials. it's unclear what the u.s. government's role may have been in his death. president trump not revealing any details. >> do you have any intelligence of bin laden's son? >> i don't want to comment on it. i don't want to comment on that. thank you very much, everybody. >> reporter: he was just 7 years old when his father declared holy war on the united states, appearing in an al qaeda video soon after the september 11th attacks, followed by a series of video and audio recordings after his father and brother were killed by u.s. navy seals in may 2011. his rising influence noticed on a global scale. saudi arabia revoking his

citizenship, the u.s. state department announcing a $1 million reward for information about his whereabouts. and still no word on whether anyone is actually eligible for that reward. the news comes as u.s. officials have warned that al qaeda is trying to reconstitute. savannah, willie? >> courtney, thank you very much. we are watching wall street very closely. the dow jones lost nearly 334 points yesterday after the federal reserve cut interest rates. what does it all mean for your money? nbc's tom costello joins us. as a rule wall street likes lower interest rates. what happened yesterday? >> reporter: a lot of folks wanted to see a half point rate cut rather than a quarter point and then the fed suggested this is not the beginning of a long series of rate cuts. so a lot will depend on whether the u.s. and china can end their trade war.

kicking off the dog days of august volatility on wall street, after the federal reserve cut interest rates by a quarter point wednesday. the goldilocks question -- was it too much, not enough, or just right to keep the economy humming? president trump has been demanding a rate cut after nine rate hikes over four years. >> the fed moves, in my opinion, far too early and far too severely. >> reporter: the fed chairman said it was not in response to presidential pressure. >> we never take into account political considerations. there is no place for that. >> reporter: the president tweeted disappointment that the cut wasn't bigger. powell let us down but at least he is ending quantitative tightening or rate hikes which shouldn't have started in the first place. no inflation. the deadlocked trade war with china was a big reason for the fed's cut. meanwhile, bankrate.com has calculated how this latest rate cut could affect you and me. mortgage rates have dropped to below 4%. on a $200,000 loan the savings

to review documents. when can we expect a trial >> it will be a while. the judge set a date of june 2020 to start the criminal trial. he said that could get pushed back when it does start it's expected to take four to six weeks. if you thought it would move quickly through the courts, it won't. >> disturbing story on so many levels, including that new "new york times" report thank you so much. we'll take a turn now and get a check of the weather from mr. roker. what's going on? >> we're seeing a lot of tropical activity, start in the pacific right now. we've got a hurricane erick, it's weakened, 90 miles per hour winds. flossie right now, 1,675 miles east of hilo and the tracks put erick to the south and flossie to the north but we'll continue to watch flossie as we get into the early part of next week. the tropical wave right now down around the bahamas and cuba in between. that's going to bring wet weather to the south eastern atlantic that's not the worst we see right now.
