6:02 am
affecting traffic. the drive times for the bridges things are starting to slow down westbound 80 driving toward the bay bridge looking at 17 minutes, also a live look right now in the tri-valley, dublin cameras, this is not bad for this camera, we're typically starting to notice a little more slowing, down to the south bay, along both lanes of 101, both sides, both directions doing okay, moving along and i want to show you a very busy bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights are on. head out the door and take that coffee to go. >> all right. new this morning, one person is locked up after police say he caused a big rig to flip onto its side, shutting down lanes of i-80 in contra costa county overnight. >> it's a story we brought you as breaking news when we first went on air at 4:30 this morning. "today in the bay's" pete suratos has been live out there in pinole since that, and pete, all the lanes back open but what do investigators think about all of this? what do they say happened? >> reporter: good morning to you, guys. chp says that big rig driver was trying to avoid that car that
6:03 am
was stopped in the slow lane and then that's how that big rig overturned, but as you can see over my shoulder, traffic is back to normal here on eastbound 80 near appian way but it was much different scene earlier this morning. we can show our viewers what the scene was like earlier this morning. according to chp, it took place roughly around 2:45 a.m. with the big rig driver swerving out of the way to avoid a black camry that stopped in the slow lane, but in the process, as i mentioned that big rig overturned. as for the driver of that camry, here is some video of that driver being handcuffed by chp. they say the car was stopped and that driver was apparently passed out. here is chp describing his condition when they arrived. >> the drunk driver was passed out and/or sleeping in the driver's seat of the camry, in the low lane, and the big rig driver was able to avoid him, thankfully. >> reporter: taking you guys back out here live to eastbound

6:05 am
this happened around 12:30 last night. the officers were chasing a driver for speeding along southbound 280 here in san jose. the officer lost control near the 880 and highway 17 interchange. it appears the squad car rolled over at least once and as you could see in the video the air bags fortunately did deploy. as i mentioned, both officers are okay. it was a sergeant who took them to the hospital, to be treated for their minor injuries, and the speeding suspect however did get away. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. well developing on capitol hill this morning, the trump administration is preparing to withdraw thousands of troops from afghanistan. it's all part of a deal the administration is reportedly making with the taliban. 6:07 am
on that extra cost? experts think so. starting september 1st, the trump administration is imposing 10% on $300 billion worth of goods. that's on top of the 25% already in place. electronics, appliances, auto parts, clothes, bicycles, baby products. >> we just put a tax on having a child. >> reporter: financial markets took a nose dive. president trump is also reacting to north korea launching two short-range missiles. it's the third test in just over a week, after none last year. >> i have no problem. we'll see what happens, but these are short-range missiles. they're very standard. >> reporter: experts think kim jong-un is angry about upcoming military exercises with south korea. now the problem there is that we're not talking to the north koreans anymore. the talks broke down and there is nothing scheduled. marcus? >> all right, a lot of people
6:08 am
will be listening trying to figure out what will happen next, tracie, thank you. >> 6:07. back here at home in the wake of the mass shooting at the garlic festival in gilroy, security is top of mind for a lot of folks who are planning to attend events across the bay area. the fremont festival of the arts kicks off today and organizers tell us that they want to assure the public that they are partnering with police to make sure everyone can feel safe. following a string of deadly terror attacks in europe, at the 2017 city officials in fremont installed large barriers designed to prevent vehicles from plowing in to crowds. we know the santa clara county fair is also upping security as well. we are learning that the second of two friends shot in the rampage has now been released from valley medical center in san jose. brynn ota matthews and her friend gabriella gaus were hit by fire. they spoke for the first time about the gunman and the chaos and the physical and emotional wounds they think they will feel for a very long time. >> it sounds really bleak and

just a few minutes. another look coming up and vianey has a look at the morning commute. >> i don't have much to report in the way of accidents but we're starting to notice some slowing down in the south bay, so let's look at how the east bay is doing, because i'm noticing slowing through there mainly along southbound 880 from 238 to highway 84. i saw this change from ten minutes to now 14 minutes so that gives you an idea of how many cars are starting to hit the road at 6:00 a.m. a live look at the san mateo bridge, aside from that we've got no issues on any of the bridges. i'll send things back to you. >> all right, thank you very much. 6:11 right now. >> still ahead this hour, an olympic superstar is back in the pool here in the bay area, at 6:25, ryan lochte's achievement this week putting him on the path of gold again. we just got the latest on the jobs numbers, plus it's been a really rough week on wall street, new tariffs. we'll talk about all of those things, when "today in the bay" continues.
