>> please top the rhetoric "early today" starts right now. good to be with you this morning. i'm frances rivera. >> i'm philip mena in el paso, texas. the country is reeling after two mass shootings one in texas and one in ohio. two cities, 1,600 miles apart both grieving. in el paso a 21-year-old gunman opened fire near a cruded walmart. dozens of people sent scrambling 20 killed and 26 injured >> we have cover aage, no doubt covering another mass shooting is tough, but especially when it happened where you grew up and where you call home. >> it's deeply personal, frances. my brother is a firefighter and

was among those who were the first responders on the scene. i worked at the mall that so many people were running from, including my aunts and cousins who were inside. thankfully they were safe. but 20 people and 20 families that are grieving this morning and they are not coming home from the day of shopping they were allegedly targeted because they were hispanic and look just like me. this community is waking upin shock and disbelief that something like this could happen here most of the families, like i said, they were back to school shopping and then they had to dive for cover just to escape gunshots some were not so lucky one couple died trying to shield sha their baby >> i text him. we're at the unification center and we're praying to god that you're on the bus and you'll be here

unleashing round after round inside that walmart, philip, they took him into custody peacefully no gunfire exchanged before they took him and proceeded to ask him question after question and at this point in time, he was cooperative. police did not elaborate what was said over the course of that questioning which lasted several hours yesterday right here in el paso the other thing, we need to know the distance he came to arrive at this point. he is from allen, which is a suburb from dallas an eight to ten-hour drive from el paso and we don't know where he purchased that ak-47 but we believe it was near that area and then proceeded to make that long drive to el paso to this walmart where he started shooting in the, pai parking lot before making his way inside they're suearching his home and two other locations. the scene of the walmart will

remain a lock down scene for the next few days because police are gathering whatever they can in this area. cars that were there on saturday remaining there right now. el paso pd telling everyone, we're sorry, we need to keep this a secure, contained crime scene as we continue to build this case going forward. >> eerie to see a couple days later and all those cars remain. morgan, thank you so much. less than 14 hours after the violence in el paso, gunfire erupted in dayton, ohio. you may find some of this video from that scene disturbing people were lining up outside popular bars and restaurants on saturday night nine people were killed and dozens were hurt in less than a minute cathy park is in dayton this morning. what more are we learning about the investigation that is going on there >> philip, good morning to you the investigation still very much in the preliminary stages and we were able to get a better timeline on how this shooting took place

1:05 yesterday morning that's when shots were initially fired. 30 seconds after that, that's when officers were able to confront the suspect and eventually kill the gunman we're told that the suspect had on body armor, a mask and also had .223 caliber rifle we are told if that man actually got into this bar behind me, he could have killed more people. we were actually able to talk to a lot of witnesses and they were told, obviously, this is a chaotic scene. one individual had to take cover for safety take a listen. >> it continued to happen. like it was like pop, pop, pop i just saw people on the ground like crawling to the bathroom and i just went because it was like either go to the bathroom or go out the back door. >> in total, nine killed 27 injured one person remains i condition. and last night the mayor was

as crowds gather for a night out in dayton, ohio, hard to imagine the fear they felt as those shots rang out nine people were killed in less than a minute. nbc gabe gutierrez spoke with some of the survivors. >> reporter: it was chaos eyewitnesses say sheer carnage in dayton's historic district. >> i looked down and everyd it loud i just freaked out and started running. >> reporter: taylor was inside this crowded bar she and a dozen terrified bystanders took cover in a bathroom not sure if people desperately banging on the door to get in were the gunman. >> it sounded like the gunshots
