about once they encountered him here at the scene, they took him into custody without incident. they were able to question him several hours yesterday. he is in police custody now. when we asked what was asked of him and what he said in return, they didn't want to get in specifics. they're holding their cards close to the vest as they build a case against this gunman because of the heinous nature of the crime. now, charges he faces on a state and federal level. for hate crimes and for federal firearms charges, which could bring the death penalty. of course, as all this goes forward in the legal aspect, the investigation is really honing in on that 2300 word essay we believe he posted online about a half hour before the shooting took place he posted it to a social media forum knownas 8chan that's ver well known for extremist nature, the rhetoric that's expressed there. and we just learned within the past few hours that the site that hosts that social media forum has decided to pull that down as of right now >> there's no longer operational. >> reporter: right that's at least the plan as they say. we're still waiting to hear

further details from that company. but again 8chan is a forum known for sometime to be a space where these people with extremist views can go on, they can share them, and they can potentially spread those views to others so what they're trying to do is basically cut that off to where this ideology that was so racist and so hate filled that we saw in this wording isn't shared with others in hopes it doesn't influence someone else to do the same thing >> maybe it was the place harboring hate and it's shutdown now. morgan chesky, thank you so much in el paso, it's not the only community processing a tragedy today. a similar horrific scene playing out in dayton, ohio, less than 24 hours after the massacre here in texas nbc's kate snow is there, and we warn you, some of the video you are about to see is disturbingt really popular part of dayton. lots of bars and restaurants here and on a saturday night it was filled with people it was almost last call when the shooting happened.

about this, noting that the president several times had noted support for universal background checks. the other thing that there's a lot of talk about on the campaign trail is white supremacy, and whether the president's rhetoric has actually encouraged white supremacy in the u.s >> we also have to acknowledge that the open racism and intolerance and hatred that we are seeing throughout this countreio encourages this kind of hatred and as a result, this kind of violence must be stopped >> reporter: now, the president defended this weekend by his acting chief of staff mick mulvaney saying there's no way you can blame the president for what's happened in el paso or in dayton either when it comes to racism and white supremacy, or gun legislation. but there is a big push to try to get members of the senate back to washington to deal with
