tv Today in the Bay NBC August 5, 2019 4:30am-4:59am PDT
4:30 am
and it is monday, august 5th, let's take you out live to sfo, perhaps you're off for business today, somewhere interesting. it is monday morning, thanks for joining us. it's an unusual crew. i'm scott mcgrew in for marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. mike's off today so kari's pulling some double duty. it is the dog days of summer, which means we're a little flexible so people can get their time off in. >> everyone's on vacation and headed out of town. >> not everyone. >> we're going to be here and holding it down so we're going to start out with a few clouds this morning. we are going to have a cooler day, so in campbell, we'll see those temperatures dipping into the upper 50s and by noon, we' and normally we're up to 82
4:31 am
degrees. i think we'll be right at that number or slightly below. here is a look at our south bay high temperatures as you get ready to head out, still heating up in the south county with gilroy reaching 86 degrees. we'll talk about what's ahead for the rest of the week as you get ready to head out on the roads this morning. here is an overall view of the bay area that so far looks good. we are keeping an eye on that one issue on highway 101. we normally see this construction at the whipple off-ra off-ramp, and so that's still going on. we'll see if we see anything slowing down but so far, everything looks good as you get ready to head out on the roads. we'll look at the complete traffic maps and the forecast coming up in a few minutes. bak bay, where the roads are shut down, around a construction site in downtown san jose, after two people climb a 20-story construction crane. >> you see that in the center of our live picture there, our downtown san jose camera. those people refusing to come down. "today in the bay's" bob redell
4:32 am
is live near city hall to show us what's happening. >> reporter: scott and kris, you can see behind me san jose police shut down santa clara between third and fifth streets here as they try to get the second person to come down from this crane. one man has come down within the past, well, here comes the second person, looks like he's coming down right now. one man came down about ten minutes ago. he's been arrested and as we watch live, looks like this man right now is finally coming down, it looks like he might have dipped out of our view because we have the construction site there and the fence, but it looks like he's coming down and moments ago, he was also on his cell phone talking to someone, i don't know if he was talking to police or someone else but hopefully this means he's coming down and police will be able to take him away and they'll be able to reopen these roads. i want to show you video of morning, climbed up to the top of this crane. i can't tell how tall that crane is, it's at least ten stories tall, they were in the cab the crane operator sits in, going in
4:33 am
and out of that. as a result police came out, they were trying to get them to come down but they had to shut down the roads between third and fifth on santa clara just across from city hall as they tried to get them to come out. so again, one man already came down, he's been taken into custody, and i'm under the assumption right now this man did make it all the way down and that police are there waiting to take him in to custody as well and i wonder if we'll see him come out of this construction site at some point, but right now, until we know that he's been taken into custody, the roads are shut down here between third and fifth, again, on santa clara, in front of city hall. reporting live here in downtown san jose, bob redell, ready "today in the bay." >> really scary. those cranes are ridiculously tall. thank you, bob. this morning, two more cities are in mourning, after being ravaged by terror. this is just of course one week after the garlicl shooting. separate mass shootings happened over the weekend, both in texas and in ohio. >> and both were just hours apart, killing at least 29
4:34 am
day ined, wounding more than 50. el paso. morning, rather, at a walmart in the store was packed with back to school shoppers. at least 20 killed, 24 wounded. the feds are calling this an act of domestic terrorism. witnesses describe that moment of terror. >> pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, just increases rapidfire to get as much people as he could to kill. >> the gunman surrendered to police. the white supremacist posted racist hate-filled anti-immigrant rants online less than 30 minutes before that killing spree. then overnight, another mass shooting, this in dayton, ohio, nine people killed, 27 others injured. the shooter fired into a crowd on a busy sidewalk outside bars years think this would happen, especially somewhere i'd go all the time. >> among the victims, the sister of a that 24-year-old gunman. police engaged that shooter within 20 seconds of his first
4:35 am
shot, killed him less than ten seconds later and yet he was still able to kill nine people. the gunman's manifest yo posted on the website, the website protected from hacking by a bay area based tech company or at least it was. >> this morning the company says it is pulling the plug on that page. "today in the bay's" th"''s" thn is in san francisco. it's a critical decision. >> reporter: the company's ceo matthew prince said late yesterday he was done with 8chan using his platform home rfor him used by other white nationalist terrorists to glorify their hate before they committed their crimes and within minutes, we might remember following the horrific slaughter of the his panning back to school shoppers in el paso, had al nationalists killers used 8chan in the past to boast
4:36 am
about their hate-filled beliefs and celebrate what someling ame terrorism internationally. late sunday, democratic presidential candidate kamala harris made a plea to social media companies to police themselves and not to profit by promoting hate. >> there is a lot about also the business model of these fights that is about the click bait, the things that attract the most clicks make them the most money and part of their business model and hate sadly happens to attract a lot of clicks, so the responsibility is across the board, including the social media companies. any business model that profits off of hate is a business model that should be shut down. >> reporter: cloudflare reacted quickly putting up a statement yesterday it would shut down m went dark on its website and on
4:37 am
its mobile site. it might not last long, though. 8chan already putting out on twitter late yesterday that it could be u in 24 to 48 hours. we're live in san francisco, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> this is not the first time matthew prince used his power as ceo. he was interviewed here on nbc bay area. he was uncomfortable having the power to decide who should be online and who should not but did it anyway. this just in, president trump on twitter giving some ground to the idea of stronger gun control, but at the same time tieing it to immigration, writing in part "republicans and democrats must come together and get strong background checks, perhaps marrying this legislation with desperately needed immigration reform." >> president trump is said to address the nation 7:00 a.m. our time this morning and you'll be able to watch the complete remarks on nbc bay area.
4:38 am
that will happen right after "today in the bay." coming up on "today in the bay" and all new this morning, amazon responds to concerns over digital assistants, listening to your conversations. how to stop alexa from listening when you don't want her to. that's next. plus tesla bringing back a perk for those who buy its cars. up next, what that is and why tesla is changing its mind. and looking live at the bay bridge toll plaza, some early commuters starting to hit the road, but you're still with us and we're happy to have you. kari has weather and traffic coming up in just a bit.
4:41 am
welcome back. good morning. i'm brian sullivan at cnbcrs. here are your top business headlines on a very busy monday. if you don't like red, go back to bed. the trade fight with china the primary reason. remember, the president wants to slap a new 10% tariff on nearly every chinese made goods starting on september 1st but china over the weekend allowing its currency to weaken hoping to mitigate the extra 10% cost. first google then apple and now amazon. all three companies are bowing to public pressure around listening to your private conversations at home. it comes from reports of workers, sometimes outside contractors, reviewing audio recordings from digital assistants like alexa, echo and siri. apple and google have put human review on hold. amazon is going a different route. it is going to let you opt out
4:42 am
of the program, but, and this is key, you got to go in and manually delete the alexa recordings yourself. all right all you bay area tesla fans, listen up. tesla is bringing back free unlimited charging but only for new buyers of the model s or the model x. the announcement comes after sales of the two electric cars have slowed down a bit. tesla used free charging as an enticement for new buyers before. extended to the s and the x until 2017 and gradually phased out and scott and kris, it is coming back to the bay area, but only for new buyers who buy that $90,000 car. >> you get such savings buying that $90,000 car. perks. >> only for this big perk. >> easy. coming up on "today in the bay," kari hall is tracking the work week forecast. >> it starts out with a few more clouds this morning and also some fog near the coast. here is a live look outside in fremont, if you're about to head
4:43 am
out the door. we're looking at temperatures in the low 60s and making it into the low 70s later on this morning. overall, we have ae ahead. we'll talk about that and traffic, coming up next. you know when you're at ross and you score the perfect outfit? ooooohhhh! game on! now, that's yes for less. nothing beats geinrendat 20 to 60 percent off specialty store prices. at ross. yes for less.
4:45 am
and realize you can get youeverything you need...oss oh, yeah. yep. yes! ...to feel like a boss? that's yes for less. 20 to 60 percent off specialty store prices for every room and every budget. at ross. yes for less. it's a monday morning, and it's quarter to 5:00. very good morning to you, as we look at a live picture of fremont this morning. let's get a check of your weather and traffic this morning. double duty with kari hall. >> over the weekend i was at the fremont festival of the arts.
4:46 am
>> how was it? >> amazing. really nice. a little warm. we were giving out water bottles and it was a good time out there. >> cool. >> that was nice. as we start and wake up on this monday morning, we are going to see a lot of clouds in san francisco. that's what we're seeing right now, some mist and driz tozle t start out the day and the clouds will linger for much of the bay area as we go into the afternoon. we are going to have slightly cooler temperatures. your morning drive from brentwood starts out in the lower 60s and nice, cool start to the day, even after a very warm weekend, and you probably start to feel those winds picking up yesterday evening, s temperatures, we'll reach into the mid deees. for the east bay expect a high of 88 degrees in walnut creek, and in pleasanton, and in hayward, reaching 75 degrees. san mateo will see a high of 73 degrees there, and for san francisco, we're staying in the 60s this afternoon. i think we'll also see some mostly cloudy skies there, but
4:47 am
partly cloudy in the north bay, where sonoma tops out at 86 degrees. that's a live look outside in san jose, as you are getting up and getting dressed this morning. you might want to wear some light long sleeves for the morning in those cooler temperatures but also some comfortable shoes you probably want to get outside and enjoy the little cooldown that we'll see. we will have some tropical clouds moving in, as we get a surge of monsoonal moisture coming into the bay area, and then we'll also see an area of low pressure lingering off the pacific northwest, that will give us a stronger ocean breeze, and help bring in some cooler air, so look at how our temperatures respond. we're going to be in the upper 80s to start the week and cooling down to the mid 80s. san francisco will stay in the 60s all throughout the work week. as you get out there on the roads this morning, let's get a look at our overall commute. it looks pretty good as you get ready to start out and we're also just tracking one issue on highway 4, and this was a crash that was on walnut boulevard. we are going to continue to
4:48 am
monitor that. so far it doesn't look like anyone's slowing down in that area just around the brentwood area. as we head over toward the peninsula, highway 101 near whipple road, the off-ramp, we had the construction going on, sometime during this time of morning they start to pick up the cones, clear the construction and we start to see traffic slowing down. northbound 101 from highway 85 in san jose to highway 87 takes but 11 minutes, and northbound 87 from 85 to 101 takes about ten minutes. so i'll keep an eye on all the drive times as well as the weather forecast that's coming up in just a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. it was just a week ago we were sitting here talking about gilroy and the terror there. now we are continuing our coverage of two deadly mass shootings, these over the weekend, in less than 24 hours, both el paso, texas, and dayton, ohio, were left ravaged by violence. >> in total, at least 29 people were killed, and more than 50 people wounded.
4:49 am
nbc's jay gray is live in el paso this morning. jay, i worked there as a young reporter and the people there are so wonderful, they have to be absolutely heartbroken. >> reporter: good morning, you're absolutely right. this is such a giving and welcoming community, and they are, they're stunned. they're still in shock right now, and really wrestling not only with what's happened, but how they move forward. as you can see behind me, the area still locked down at this point, still a very active crime scene. after what's been a weekend of terror, investigators and the two grieving communities really searching for answers this morning. they say they're going to continue tore, police and federal agents, for as long as necessary, that this will be a slow, meticulous investigation that they want to make sure they gather every piece of evidence possible, and really working both here and in ohio, towards finding a motive in this shooting. they say it's too early at this
4:50 am
point to really know how and why these massacres were carried out, but they also point out, investigators that is, that they are going to do this to honor those who were lost and respect those who are survivors from the attacks here. there were memorials in both cities overnight, and a lot of people coming together saying that that's where they gain their strength right now, being together, being with those who are going through the same experience, and trying to figure out a way that they can heal, talking to the governor of el paso yesterday, what he told me was this will not define us. this city will move on, but he also was quick to point out, we can't even start that process until we get through 20 funerals here, 20 people have to be bury ed. it's overwhelming, hard to get your mind around. >> the walmart store was still an active crime scene as of last
4:51 am
night. are people able to have their loved one's remains returned to them at this point? >> reporter: yes, what we've been told is th the a victims h removed from the walmart, so they have taken by the coroner, and we're told this morning that that office still in the process of contacting next of kin, of relatives and so they won't make a list public until they finish that. >> you travel the nation for us, going to these news incidents that we need to cover on television. this is not your first time covering a mass shooting. how does that affect you? >> reporter: scott, unfortunately, you're right. we've seen way too many of these over the last few years. this weekend's different, though, and it's different in a lot of ways. first, as kris talked about, this community that is just so giving, and then the fact that we had two in the span of 13
4:52 am
hours i think is a real testament to what is a serious issue in our country, and the fact that we haven't done anything since parkland to really slow the pace of these attacks, it wears on our group certainly, but that's nothing compared to what we're covering, to the people that are living through all of this, and you just feel for them, scott and kris. you hurt along with them, if that's fair to say. >> i think it is definitely fair to say. stay safe out there, jay, and we will talk with you again soon. thank you. coming up on "today in the bay," "nbc bay area responds." >> hoping to get some money from that equifax settlement? if you're expecting a cash payment, you might be disappointed. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. "nbc bay area responds" with a warning, too, next. but first, happening now, a developing story out of egypt, where at least 17 people are dead, 30 more hurt after a car accident triggered an apparent

still a little bit of mist on the lens this morning, cool to start, b say warm lateon. a very big government settlement with equifax that happened. >> a major change in the payment plan along with a warning. >> good morning. this is the settlement that offered people 125 bucks or free credit monitoring because of an
4:56 am
equifax data breach that exposed 147 million people's data. we talked about it on the news and people spread word on social media. so many people signed up that the federal trade comission says there's not enough money in the settlement to pay everyone completely. it turns out they only set aside $31 million for cash compensation. well, if all 147 million people applied, they'd each get less than a quarter. so now, the ftc is encouraging people to choose free credit monitoring instead of cash. we asked the ftc how itlculed t get a we'll be watching to see if congress asks that same question. here is the warning part. websites are popping up that promise to get you a cut of that equifax money, but they're a fraud. likely designed to trick you and
