29 people killed more than 50 others injured. >> as for the investigations, they have quickly revealed the troubled pasts of the gunmen including an alleged hit list by the dayton shooter. >> these are the 17th and 18th mass shootings in america just this year. the president plans to make a statement from the white house this morning outrage and frustration has led to calls for lawmakers to come back to washington during this august recess for an emergency session on what to do next we have it all covered, including the investigations, the victims, the nationwide response to the tragedies. let's go to lester holt in el paso in a moment we want to start in dayton with this extraordinary vigil that happened overnight craig, good morning to you >> reporter: hey, savannah, good morning to you, as well. i am just feet away from a makeshift vigil that popped up in front of this bar, ned peppers, here in dayton, ohio. this is where a gunman was able to kill nine people and injure 27 more. he did it in less than 60

seconds. i was at that vigil that you just mentioned last night. the grief palpable, but the frustration was honestly just as palpable this morning though, remarkable stories of heroism, bravery, and complete strangers out for a night of fun who just stopped and tried to save some lives. and tried to save some lives moments of mourning turning to frustration in dayton. >> do something! do something >> reporter: people demanding action from lawmakers on stage just hours after dayton became the latest city shattered by a mass shooting. 31 injured, 9 lives lost among them, 25-year-old thomas mcnichols. his aunt remembering the father of four as a gentle giant who loved his family >> he was about love no matter what, he always said, i love you >> reporter: logan turner who

reportedly celebrated his 30th birthday was the world's best son according to his mother. at 57 years old, derrick fudge was the oldest victim. the youngest, 22-year-old megan betts. police identifying her brother connor betts as the gunman the siblings traveled to the downtown area together but separated at some point before he opened fire >> we have an active shooter on 5th street >> reporter: video from early sunday morning shows people running for their lives as police say the 24-year-old, armed with an assault rifle and high capacity magazines, shot into a crowded street while wearing a mask and body armor. >> you could see the bodies actually start to fall then we knew it was bigger than just even a shootout >> reporter: alise and catherine can be seen sprinting to safety outside a bar. the women later describing the chaos to kate snow. >> we're just lucky and so blessed to be here right now. >> if he would have turned to his right, we would be dead right now.

tornadoes that touched down here a few months ago that left hundreds of businesses and homes destroyed. the mayor telling me just a few minutes ago that this is a community that's in shock. you know, we've been to so many of these cities now, and everywhere you go, the people, the mayors, they all tell you the same thing, we never thought it would happen here this isn't something that happens in a place like dayton, ohio there are also so many stories emerging of people who were in this busy district who jumped in to help. people who -- nurses who stopped to perform cpr on complete strangers after the shooting had stopped. that's the kind of place dayton is that's the kind of people that live here in this city >> the best of us and the worst of us in a matter of moments craig, thank you very much we'll be back with you throughout the morning. let's turn to the outpouring of grief in el paso. the scene of that second mass shooting in less than 24 hours

federal investigators focused on the shooter's apparent motive of hate nbc's lester holt is in el paso with that part of the story. lester, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. authorities are treating this as a case of domestic terrorism after the gunman opened fire at a walmart here on saturday, killing at least 20 people and injuring dozens more the store was packed with families, many of them shopping for back to school supplies. the victims ranging from 2 to 82 years old. overnight, thousands in el paso gathered in grief. residents holding up their phones during a vigil to honor the lives lost in saturday's massacre this close-knit community shattered after gunfire tore through a local walmart. >> saw people start running from him. pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. just increased rapid fire to get as many people as he could to kill.

street. he murdered nine people including his own sister and injured 27 others. the first lady and i join all americans in praying and grieving for the victims, their families, and the survivors. we will stand by their side forever. we will never forget. these barbaric slaughters are an assault upon our communities, an attack upon our nation, and a crime against all of humanity. we are outraged and sickened by this monstrous evil, the cruelty, the hatred, the malice, the bloodshed, and the terror. our hearts are shattered for every family whose parents, children, husbands and wives were ripped from their arms and their lives.

condolences of our nation to president obrador of mexico and all the people of mexico for the loss of their citizens in the el paso shooting. terrible, terrible thing. i have also been in close contact with attorney general barr and fbi director ray. federal authorities are on the ground and i have directed them to provide any and all assistance required, whatever is needed. the shooter in el paso posted a manifesto online consumed by racist hate. in one voice, our nation must condemn racism, bigotry and white supremacy. these sinister ideologies must be defeated. hate has no place in america. hatred warps the mind, ravages

the heart, and devours the soul. we have asked the fbi to identify all further resources they need to investigate and disrupt hate crimes and domestic terrorism, whatever they need. we must recognize that the internet has provided a dangerous avenue to radicalize disturbed mind and perform demented acts. we must shine light on the dark recesses of the internet and stop mass murders before they start. the internet, likewise, is used for human trafficking, illegal drug distribution and so many other heinous crimes. the perils of the internet and social media cannot be ignored, and they will not be ignored. in the two decades since columbi columbine, our nation has watched with rising horror and

dread as one mass shooting has followed another over and over again, decade after decade. we cannot allow ourselves to feel powerless. we can and will stop this evil contagion. in that task, we must honor the sacred memory of those we have lost by acting as one people. open wounds cannot heal if we are divided. we must seek real bipartisan solutions. we have to do that in a bipartisan manner. that will truly make america safer and better for all. first we must do a better job of identifying and acting on early warning signs. i am directing the department of justice to work in partnership with local, state, and federal agencies as well social media companies to develop tools to detect mass shooters before they strike.

as an example the monster in the parkland high school in florida had many red flags against him and yet nobody took decisive action. nobody did anything. why not? second, we must stop the glorification of violence in our society. this includes the gruesome and grisly video games that are now comm commonplace. it is too easy today for troubled youth to surround themselves with a culture that celebrates violence. we must stop or substantially reduce this, and it has to begin immediately. cultural change is hard. but each of us can choose to build a culture that celebrates the inherent worth and dignity of every human life. that's what we have to do. third, we must reform our mental health laws to better identify mentally disturbed individuals who may commit acts of violence

and make sure those people not only get treatment but when necessary involuntary confinement. mental illness and hatred pulls the trigger, not the gun. fourth, we must make sure that those judged to pose a grave risk to public safety do not have access to firearms and that if they do, those firearms can be taken through rapid due process. that's why i have called for red flag laws also known as extreme risk protection orders. today, i'm also directing the department of justice to propose legislation ensuring that those who commit hate crimes and mass murders face the death penalty and that this capital punishment be delivered quickly, decisively, and without years of needless delay. these are just a few of the

areas of cooperation that we can pursue. i am open and ready to listen and discuss all ideas that will actually work and make a very big difference. republicans and democrats have proven that we can join together in a bipartisan fashion to address this plague. last year, we enacted the stop school violence into law providing grants to improve school safety and strengthening critical background checks for firearm purchases. at my direction, the department of justice banned bump stocks. last year we prosecuted a record number of firearms offenses. but there is so much more that we have to do. now is the time to set destructi destructive partisanship aside -- so destructive -- and

about nine minutes on the pair of shootings that took place over the weekend in el paso, texas, and dayton, ohio, calling them a crime against humanity, saying americans were outraged and sickened by it. called it bar baric slaughter of innocent lives and talked about steps he believes should happen with some rechbs references to particular legislation on the issue of guns which is, of course, something a lot of people were waiting to hear. what did you take away from the statements? >> reporter: it was notable he did call for four steps including legislation essentially dealing with red flag laws. what does this mean? this means that authorities or family members can petition to have weapons taken away from an individual who they deem to be dangerous to themselves or to the community. of course, democrats will call for expanded background checks in addition to that.

you got this. good morning, 7:26 right now. i'm kris sanchez. in the wake of two latest mass shootings a bay area tech company has cut critical cyber security to a notorious website where the gunman in el paso posted a racist rant before opening fire. cloudflare's ceo says the company no loeninger provide web support to 8chan. the website and its message board have been linked to white supremacists who post racist and threatening messages before committing similar tasks. cloudflare said it was terminating service for 8chan but 8chan is saying it plans to relaunch by wednesday at the latest. we want to get a look at your forecast. >> we're starting out with some clouds and cooler temperatures,

we'll have some slightly cooler air moving in today. this is the live look outside over the south bay, where our temperatures are headed up to 84 degrees. we'll see highs in the low 90s in the east bay, as well as parts of the north bay. livermore expect a high of 89, napa today reaching 82, and 72 in oakland, with san francisco in the mid-60s. over the next several days, we are going to have a nice cooldown by the middle of the week. a stronger breeze picking up, bringing our high temperatures inland. in the weekend upper 80s and low 90s. in san francisco we're seeing 60s in the forecast as we take clouds and fog all throughout the work week and as we get out there on the roads as you get ready to head out a major problem in the east bay with a sig alert jamming up traffic on eastbound 580. we've also seen the traffic also rubber neckers looking overhead slowing down traffic coming from the other direction, and that backup is pretty long, going

"do something," repeatedly by e crowd interrupting him interrupted other officials, as well the mayor of dayton told me we could learn a little bit more about the motive of this 24-year-old man named connor betts. at this point, we do not know a great deal about what may have motivated him to open fire behind me, killing 9 and injuring 27 others she said there may be a bit more to learn in the news conference set to happen here in a few hours from now

my friend and colleague, gabe gutierrez, is also here in dayton, ohio one of the things that happens in instances like this, as you know, gabe, and savannah eluded to this earlier, the best of us comes out in situations like this. >> absolutely. >> there was a critical care nurse who happened to be at this bar who tried to save some lives. >> i was at the vigil last night, craig, and people were honoring not just the victims but those survivors who also helped so many others. you mentioned this critical care nurse, kayla miller. she was out celebrating a friend's 25th birthday in her struggle to survive, she may have ended up saving others. >> reporter: it was chaos eyewitnesss say, sheer carnage in dayton's historic oregon district. >> i literally looked down, and everybody was on the ground. it was so loud i mean, i just freaked out and started running. >> reporter: taylor mulberry was inside this crowded bar overnight. she and about a dozen terrified bystanders took cover in a

bathroom, not sure if the people banging on the door to get in could be the gunman. >> it sounded like the gunshots were coming closer i thought that they were just going to come into the bathroom. i just thought, like i was -- it was over >> reporter: you didn't think you were going to survive. >> i didn't think we were going to get out of the bathroom. >> reporter: kayla miller was also inside the bar celebrating a friend's birthday. >> i look down the sidewalk and just see a row of -- a row of bodies people shot. some alive, some not >> reporter: did you know they were gunshots right away >> i mean, it was pretty evident because everyone was just crawling toward the back exit, just fighting each other to get out of the bar >> reporter: in her struggle to survive, a heroic instinct kicked in. a trained nurse, she performed cpr on other victims

good monday morning. right now at 7:56, and as you get ready to head out in the south bay, we're seeing mostly cloudy skies, also looking a little busy on highway 101. as we look at our weather forecast today we're going to be heating up, still in the east bay valleys, into the upper 80s, with the low 90s and this is a little cooler than our weekend weather, while san jose reaches 84 degrees. we'll see a high of 87 in santa rosa, and staying in the mid-60s in san francisco. going throughout the week we'll be in for a cooldown with the valleys reaching the lower 80s, by wednesday and thursday, and then we're going to heat it back up again in time for the weekend, back into the upper 80s and lower 90s. for san francisco, expect mid-60s all throughout the week, with some breezy winds, and the clouds and the fog lingering this morning. as you get ready to head out on the roads, this is a live look in oakland, it's moving very slowly. we've had quite a few accidents

good morning. we have breaking news. firefighters confirming one person has died and a second person is in the hospital after a house fire in san jose. this is video just into our newsroom moments ago. firefighters are still at the scene. this is an active fire at hillsdale avenue in san jose. right now firefighters are telling us a middle aged woman has died and a teenage girl was pulled from the fire. we don't have an update on her condition. we have no idea whether there may have been others in the home. we're looking into that. we do know at this point they do not believe the fire spread to any other neighboring homes. let's get a check of weather and traffic this morning. >> scott, i've been following

>> so to be here is just surreal and amazing, and we're so proud of everybody collectively making this show happen >> it's such an exciting spin on a classic reboot explain this whole playing fictionalized, tightened versions of your actual selves. >> well, at first, it was a little hard to wrap your head around, but we all kind of got together and decided that doing a straight reboot didn't feel like enough. we wanted to amp it up a little bit. that's where this came from. >> well, we thought of the idea together about two years ago, and then we pitched it to the cast, to see if they'd want to do it. i feel most of them didn't want to do a straight reboot. that's why we haven't had one since we went off the air 20 years ago. this was like a new idea, and it involved a lot of comedy what people don't know is everyone on the show is really funny. there has never been a whole ensemble playing a fictionalized version of themselves before it was having different. >> but for the hard-core fans, they do get a show within a show they will see our 90210

characters. >> right i mean, considering how huge 90210 was back 30 years ago when it first came out, for you guys to be able to poke fun at yourselves, i mean, and think of the things the tabloids said about you, you go right in is this your chance to say, hey, we get it? we you know what you're saying about it. >> we wanted to make fun of people's perceptions, rather accurate or false, and we wanted to spin it, take back the power and have fun with it. >> we want fans to say, wait, is that based on a real story that happened or fictionalized? it is a blend. >> i walked away after the first episode saying, well, was that true or not? you get wrapped up in all the drama that is happening in the show. >> good. >> you two did this idea for the reboot a couple years ago. was it hard to get everybody on board? >> it was a challenge. >> yeah. just because i think they weren't sure if they wanted to do a reboot. we had to -- we had a meeting.
