plaza where you have metering lights. back to you. el paso, tchl teexas, and d ohio, dealing with immense loss. those two shootings within 24 hours left dayton and el paso asking the same questions we are asking here in the bay area after gilroy. here is the latest in the el paso shooting. the number of dead now 22. two more people are still many critical condition. in this case, they arrested the suspected gunman. investigators are certain it was fuelled at least in part by racial hatred. >> as soon as he got here, he was lost in a neighborhood. after that, he found his way to the walmart because we understand he was hungry. >> as for the latest in ohio, the number of dead is still at nine. that means people are still

recovering. 14 people were also shot and they are recovering. authorities killed the shooter less than a minute after the first gunfire. investigators say there's no indication on what was fuelling him or if he knew that his sister was among his own victims. >> it's hard to believe that he didn't recognize that was his sister. >> the white house confirms the president will travel to dayton and el paso. mourners hold events to stay strong and be together the same way that has been happening in gilroy. back here, one of the three shooting victims killed at the festival attack will be laid to rest. investigators prepare to get new information on the case. we are live in gilroy with what we could expect this morning. >> reporter: good morning. the gilroy police chief and a special agent in charge for the fbi, they will speak to us in five hours here at the gilroy police department to provide new

details and an update into investigation into what drove the 19-year-old suspect to shoot people at the gilroy garlic festival. two sundays ago, as the festival was winding down, the gunman shot 16 people with an ak-47-style rifle purchased legally in nevada. 13 of the people survived. three did not. including a 25-year-old man, a 13-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy. the gunman shot and killed himself after police shot him within a minute of the start of the shooting. the 13-year-old girl who died was keyla salazar. she would have turned 14 this past sunday. yesterday, her family held two memorials for her as friends paid final respects. her family shared stories about her vibrant personality, her love of animals and dreams of a career in animation. later today, her family will hold a funeral and a separate celebration of life.

position, despite the fact that the markets really tanked over the china situation yesterday and for the past week it seems to be escalating into a full-blown trade war. the united states is officially labeling china a currency manipulator. accusing the nation of deliberately lowering the value of its money to sell goods cheaper and gain a competitive advantage. president trump tweets, it's one sided, a major violation of international commitment, designed to steal our businesses and factories, hurt our jobs, depress our workers' wages and harm farmers' prices. it comes after president trump imposed more tariffs on china last week to punish them for not buying enough from american farmers as promised to balance our trade deficit. >> if they don't want to trade with us that would be fine with me. it would save a lot of money. >> we hope to get a good

bilateral trade deal that benefits americans and american workers. >> the treasury department says china has a long history of undervaluing its currency and its central bank admits they plan to keep doing so. wall street is not happy with this trade war. the dow plunged more than 750 points monday. its worst day of the year. again, with opening bell here, things are looking better. we're told for today, we will have to see where things shake out. >> we have to try to keep our eye on the big -- the long game, right? thanks. a lot of those tariffs affect things we buy every day. we have food from china. a lot of our kids' goods. school supplies right now. >> you were talking about one of the twitter users who called it a tax on having children. to be clear, americans are paying those tariffs, even if the president sometimes says the

opposite. the other thing you have in here is this accusation against china it's manipulating its currency. that's a valid accusation. it has gotten cheaper for china. they have lowered -- they have allowed their currency to fall. they were propping it up for some time. they are not finally unm unmanipulating it. it's another thing in this vast stew of things that is causing wall street to really have trouble. >> the president is talking about it on twitter. jury deliberations are set to resume in the ghost ship warehouse fire trial. the jurors received the case last week. they face 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter for the deadly 2016 fire. prosecutors say they disregarded the safety of others when they illegally converted that warehouse into a home for artists. the attorneys say their clients are not the only ones to blame. arguing that the city of

oakland, the fire department and the owner of the building should be to blame as well. if convicted, they face a maximum of 39 years in prison. hoping to fight the new san francisco ban on e-cigarettes and vaping, leaders from juul along with other companies are meeting today working on a november ballot initiative to combat the ban. in june, san francisco became the first city in the country to ban the sale of all e-cigarettes. the fba says vaping is an epidemic that targets the country's young people. happening today, another first for berkeley. it will be the first city in the country to ban the use of natural gas in new construction. the mayor will sign that law. the new building construction will no longer have natural gas hookups. this comes as berkeley is about to see new construction. more than 3,000 residential units are planned. speaking of gas, we have an

trade tensions between the u.s. and china. starting with president trump last week threatening a new round of tariffs. beijing responded by allowing its currency to break through a psychological level with the dollar that was last seen in 2008. it appears things may be stabilizing today. we have seen action by the chinese on the currency. asian markets declined but not as much as feared. we could see green arrows when we see the markets open in 15 minutes. barney's has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy today. it will close stores and seven warehouse locations. it will operate its flagship store in manhattan and seven others while it seeks a buyer. it was hurt by the downturn in retail and high rent. the federal reserve is

that crash just clearing. the east bay moves nicely. highway 4 slows. recovery up past the coliseum. the earlier crash cleared. there may be more issues near the coliseum. >> thank you. another crash you know about. a police chase that led to a deadly crash in napa last night. police were called about a driver passed out in a white sedan. when paramedics showed up, the driver took off. officers tried to pull the car over. a spike strip was deployed. the driver swerved to avoid it, lost control, flipped the car over. the driver and passenger were taken to the hospital. the passenger died. they have not been identified. a live look in walnut creek. happening today, the future is coming into focus. planners debate a long-term plan to reshare tpe the area.

it's called the north downtown plan. pete is there with what the plan is promising. a lot of communities are talking about responsible growth and proper development. this is a first step. >> reporter: good morning to you. walnut creek city council plans to add more homes and businesses to the area. we will see when that is discussed later today. we will show some of the renderings of what it may look like. it's spanning roughly 191 acres. it would be adjacent to where we are standing here at the walnut creek bart station. it was proposed in 2014 with the transportation commission. walnut creek was awarded more than $600,000. we did speak with riders about the possibility of this area

we will follow this. we have video of all lanes of northbound 101 open. a big rig and cars involved. two people taken to the hospital. no word on their condition. chp reopened the lanes an hour later. in the east bay, a woman is dead following an early morning crash. this happened on interstate 580 at the dutton avenue off ramp. that ramp open as of new. the woman veered off the road and hit a tree. it's not clear what caused that crash. hundreds of former boy scouts are filing a lawsuit against the boy scouts of america, alleging sexual abuse over 80 years and across every nearly state. lawyers found 350 abusers. many of the men identified in the lawsuit had prominent positions inside and outside

scouting which gave them easy access to children. the fire that started over the weekend mere clayton and forced evacuations is still not fully contained. it started series of overnight fires. some people wonder if the fires might have been set on purpose. firefighters are talking about several points of origin. so far, they have not determined a cause. a tragic warning for everybody. a 2-year-old was found dead in a hot car in san diego. police say the toddler's mother called police just before 1:00 in the afternoon to say she had woken up from a nap and couldn't find the child. the mother called back to tell them she found the child inside the car. the toddler was pronounced dead when police arrived. new overnight, president trump is criticizing google on twitter. the president insinuated the

tech company may be working against his re-election campaign saying, we are watching google very closely. he listed baseless accusations that the tech company has an anti-conservative bias. ta he tagged google's ceo in the post. a new california law aimed at forcing president trump to release his tax returns is facing new legal on decisioppos. he governor signed that law. yesterday, the conservative group judicial watch filed a legal challenge. the lawsuit claims the law violates the 1st and 14th amendment. the future of california's high-speed rail is up in the air, the rail authority still wants people to know what will happen if construction ever makes it to the bay area. happening later today, leaders will host an open house in santa clara.

in union city, we are going to celebrate national night out with temperatures there cooler. about 72 degrees. then upper 60s by 7:00 as our skies stay mostly clear. we have seen a lot of clouds rolling by, giving us interesting sunrises and sunsets. it's because we are seeing tropical moisture rolling in. it's giving us a slight increase in the humidity. you will probably feel that this morning. our weather setup shows us that high pressure continues to move away from us as the storm system approaches the pacific northwest and the winds around that will bring us a stronger ocean breeze for tomorrow as well as thursday. that means cooler temperatures. we go from upper 80s today to the lower 80s tomorrow. that will stay with us until friday. after that, we start a warming trend. it will get a little bit hotter on sunday. then into the first part of next week, we're going to have warmer temperatures as we get ready for

san francisco to stay in the 60s. mike, you are checking in on earlier crashes. because the traffic alert was cleared. this other crash in oakland, north 880, that cleared. as that was going on, we had another issue. some activity, i think it was a crash, that pulled to the shoulder. folks in the fast lane slowed to see what was going on. that gums things up. good recovery for 880 past the coliseum into downtown. a section with speeds into the 50s. it's moving well. we zoom over to see west 84 and south 680, the speeds are improving. that crash is cleared but very slow and gumming up more traffic coming out of livermore. if driver in from livermore, lots of businesses over there, an hour and 25 minutes if you

she was 88. out to the u.s. stock market. a new battle in the trade war with china, the u.s. claims china manipulating its currency. this caused u.s. markets to plunge yesterday. the market just opened up. it was a huge drubbing yesterday. yesterday was the worst day of the year for wall street, shedding more than 750 points. that's a six-day losing streak. jury deliberations are set to resume in the ghost ship warehouse trial. jurors received the case last week. two men face 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter for the 2016 fire. prosecutors say they disregarded the safety of others when they illegally converted that warehouse space into a home for artists. defense attorneys say their clients are not the only ones to blame, arguing the oakland fire

department and oakland and the landlord are responsible as well. they face a maximum of 39 years in prison. hoping to fight the ban on e-cigarettes and vaping, leaders from juul and other companies will meet today. they are working on a ballot initiative to combat the ban. san francisco was the first in the country to ban e-cigarettes. the fda says it's an epidemic that targets young people. another first for berkeley. the east bay city will be the first in the country to ban the use of natural gas in new construction. the mayor will sign that law. new building construction will not have natural gas hookups. go electric instead. berkeley is about to see a new wave of construction. more than 3,000 residential units are in the works. if you are in the south bay, check your bank account and credit card statements.

campbell police searching for a woman who used stolen information to load up at local grocery stores. they say this woman went to four south bay safeway stores and bought $4,200 worth of alcohol and gift cards. call police if you recognize her. google is pledging a greener future for its product products >> by 2020, all hardware materials will contain recycled products. google has started using recycled plastic. by 2020, google promises to make all of its shipments going to or from customers carbon neutral. instagram isn't just instagram anymore. in case you missed it, facebook-owned app is officially called instagram from facebook.
