garcia. mike had a traffic problem earlier, now there's another one. >> let's look at the first one. our photographer made his way and got there, on the right side of your screen, you see that white vehicle slanted down here? here's chp and sheriffs, over there, that's the tow truck with the vehicle on the back of the flatbed. it went off the road and into the fencing. this is highway 92, just off the span of the san mateo bridge, still affecting traffic getting on to hayward city streets. two of those three lanes are blocked. that's majority 06of the freewa. there is a slowdown as you approach. your commute is building west over towards that san mateo bridge toll plaza. that is an issue even now. we're hearing caltrans should arrive on scene in the next 15, 20 minutes hopefully to assess the structure there for the fencing and the roadway conditions. i'm not sure what we're waiting on as far as the tow trucks go, i think we're waiting for a stronger tow truck to pull that

tow truck itself off the freeway. we're watching that. the other sig-alert is in napa. highway 29, but that's not as heavily traveled. kari? >> the golden gate bridge is foggy at this point. we'll see some low visibility there and cooler temperatures for the inland valleys. down to the south bay, 80 degrees for the high today. 83 in east san jose. we'll look at all of our microclimates and talk about the weekend ahead coming up. president trump today heads to texas and then to ohio following last weekend's deadly mass shootings. >> the president could get a chilly reception particularly in el paso. we go live now to tracie potts in washington, d.c. el paso is 80% hispanic. what should we expect from the president today? >> well, first of all expect

that people are frustrated that with it being 80% hispanic the president didn't even mention that in his speech on monday. he also got into it with beto o'rourke an el paso native overnight on twitter telling him to be quiet. beto o'rourke saying given 22 people dead neither the city or he will be quiet about that. president trump is already getting a chilly reception from arriving in el paso today. >> he is the top dog. >> reporter: some residents say they're upset that the president never mentioned latinos in his speech on monday. and that his own rhetoric they believe is contributing to the white supremacy and the violence and the culture of hate behind these types of attacks. >> he doentsdz doesn't stop to think what am i doing?

speaking out. >> i'm re-evaluating the past thinking what i could have done to raise awareness that he's dangerous. >> reporter: lindsay dahl said she spoke up to school officials about him. we'll hear about that at 7:00. organizers are holding a vigil in the mission district and demanding action against white supremacist ideology and the violence now being tied to it. similar vigils are being planned around the nation. the vigil tonight starts at 7:00 at the 24th street b.a.r.t. station. juul is warning teens to stay away from the product as the company prepares to battle legislation around the country including in san francisco looking to ban the product

"today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live with details. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you. this florida teen sharing what he believes is or what he calls his near-death experience using juul products over the years. he shared his story on social media. the story was first reported on the daily mail. that teen shared his story on instagram and twitter to his thousands of followers. he claims his lung collapse due to damage from the toxic chemicals in juul pods. he said he vaped one jewel pod every two days and wants to share his stories on what he believes are the dangers of the product. eight last month eight teens in wisconsin were hospitalized with sere lung damage because of the use -- or they said it was because of the use of vaping. there was extreme coughing, fatigue and shortness of breathe. parts of the country are working

on legislation to curb the use of e-cigarettes by youth. the board of supervisors here voted to ban the cigarettes of e-cigarettes. several states have raised the age of buying tobacco to 21. a federal mandate is getting support from juul and other tobacco companies as well. reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay." happening today, a bail hearing for peru's ex-president who is in a san francisco jail. he has been there since lt nth after he was arrested for charges that he faces in peru. he is accused of taking $20 million in bribes from a brazilian construction company while in office. he denies the charges. an extra hearidition hearing is pending. before the arrest he was working as a visiting professor at stanford. and new this morning, there's a new measles concern in southern california for folks

who have not been vaccinated. they're being warned about someone with the virus who passed through union station in los angeles. that was on july 23rd. l.a. county health leaders say there have been 16 measles cases this year. they are reminding pem wople wh have not been vaccinated to get vaccinated as soon as possible. an oak land safeway popped for selling alcohol to miners will not be selling alcohol for two months. they were caught selling to miners three times over the last three years. a 60-day suspension will be followed bay three-year probation period. the china trade war so far appears to be having minimal impact on shipping volume through the port of oakland. port leaders say operations have been steady. and imported goods were frontloaded from china before the tariffs took effect. they say president trump's new round of proposed tariffs are

still a wildcard. last night cities across the bay area and across the country gathered for national night out. it's an event that usually brings police and neighborhoods together so they can talk about safety and get to know each other. following the mass shootings in gilroy, el paso and dayton, this national night out drew unusually large crowds. here's some bay area residents we talked with. what we're doing here is promoting safety in the neighborhood. inviting the folks in the community to come out. >> at the end of it, we're all people. we come together, raising our families and kids. we want to live a great, peaceful, happy life. >> gilroy did move its national night out to october as the still still grieves from the garlic festival shooting. let's get a check of weather with kari. >> today it will be cooler, especially in the inland areas where we had some hot temperatures over the past few days. let's go hour-by-hour. here we are at 9:00, still feels

reaching 69. san francisco stays in the upper 60s as well. livermore, look at that, 83 degrees. that's the high temperature. it's going to feel nice. in san jose, expect a high of 80 degrees. lower 80s for napa and santa rosa. our pollen count still moderate in terms of tree pollen, everything else is low. i had a lot to of problems with allergies lately. as we look at what's going on, we are seeing that monsoonal moisture and rain around reno the last couple of days. that will continue to move away as an area of low pressure moves across the pacific northwest. the winds around that flowing counterclockwise will push some rain chances into the northern parts of california going into saturday. that could mean some rain anywhere from mendocino northward for saturday. if you're traveling across the region, heads up about that. as we look at our weather, it will cool down, more breezy winds as that storm system moves

further to the north. but then once that moves on, it's going to heat up. look at how hot it gets on sunday into monday. reaching into the upper 90s in the valleys. san francisco keeping it cool. we'll see some more clouds on saturday with highs in the upper 60s. mike, do you have any change for the traffic alerts? >> no change. new flares, that's the change, and they removed one chp vehicle. two of the three lanes are blocked. one lane getting by east 92. that's a portion of the freeway just off the san mateo bridge. we have this tow truck over on the shoulder there. and in the lights here you can see a couple tow trucks trying to -- they're standing by to figure out what to do about this. crews analyzing what can be done. one vehicle is on the back of that flatbed. that's causing a distraction. no real slowing yet because

traffic can get by in that one lane. it's 5:20. hoping for an update soon. westbound on the san mateo bridge and the dumbarton bridge, all moving smoothly. slight slowdown on 238 coming out of the cast trough vro valle tri valley. the other alert is in the north bay, highway 29 between zinfandel and pope street, there's a closure because of a big rig that was off the roadway. it caught fire, fencing caught fire. i don't know how that happened but it did. highway 29 is closed. you will use silverado trail as your alternate for the time being until they can reopen. we don't have a time for that opening. to put you in perspective, that's how far north it is for commuters. contra costa county looking great. highway 4, walnut creek, no delays. traffic story unfolding in south carolina this morning where police are looking for

welcome back. north korea says its leader, kim jong-un, supervised the latest round of missile launches. these are screen captures from north korean television. state media says yesterday's demonstration was meant to be a warning to the united states and south korea ahead of planned joint military exercises. these missiles are billed as new tactical guided missiles. it's believed neither has flown into foreign airspace. a tennessee woman serving a life sentence for a murder is out of prison this morning. she's a free woman. cynthia brown's story, the 31-year-old was convicted of a killing a man when she was 16. 43-year-old johnny allen hired

let's look live at the san mateo bridge where commuters are struggling a bit this morning. there is a traffic alert. mike inouye is covering that for us this morning. we would like to say thank you for joining us and good morning. i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. i'm scott mcgrew. marcus has the week off. mike, it's been quite a morning. >> no break for folks coming across the san mateo. traffic is picking up, the volume here. we're looking to the east here. there's only one lane open. chp crews are here. we have a couple of tow trucks. one is bigger than the other, they have to clear this other tow truck that went off the roadway. there's a car on the back of that tow truck complicating the situation. there's fencing damage. eden landing road, that's the exit. look at the map, there's slowing showing up now, even though it's counter-commute. getting on the bridge, the commute is building. the distraction westbound may be

a factor with those flashing lights that you saw. the dumbarton bridge stays clear of all that activity and no real issues there. we'll take to you a wide shot of the rest of the bay. a smooth drive. nothing else for this map. i move to the north bay. we have our second crash and traffic alert. highway 29 is closed because of a vehicle fire. i'm told major injuries now reported. that's why they have a closure of highway 29 between zinfandel lane and pope street. that is up in st. helena. the rest of the north bay, an easy drive. how is that forecast? >> it is easy here in the weather department. clear skies looking over san jose as the sun starts to come up. in campbell, we'll have our temperatures starting out in the low 60s. normally we're reaching about828 degrees this time of year. cooler temperatures are ahead as we get to the end of the week. i'll talk more about that and the weekend forecast. that's coming up in six minutes.

we begin with what's on most americans minds, safety for themselves and their loved ones. this comes after the mass shooting in gilroy, el paso and dayton. >> most people and communities are feeling on edge. that can cause panic-filled moments. look at the pandemonium that happened in new york's times square last night. people just running after what they thought sounded like gunshots. listen to this witness. >> people were screaming and crying, climbing over each other. everyone thought there was a shooter coming down the street. and i thought i was going to watch my daughter get shot down in front of me. >> you can imagine their panic. one person was hurt in the chaos but is expected to be okay. >> that turned out to be a motor cycle backfiring. near chicago, reports of shots fired at walmart had people rushing in. this happened in bedford park. shoppers reported hearing several shots but only a single shell casing was found.

no injuries were reported. >> and out in utah, a noise caused people to think shots were fired there. it turns out it was a sign that fell to the ground. tensions are running high in gilroy more than a week after the garlic festival mass shooting in that small community. tonight gilroy drentz alresiden gather for another large-scale event. roz plater is there. we know people are feeling raw, even those of white house live some miles away from gilroy. >> people talked about how tr traumatic this week have been. people are skeeeking grief counseling and emotional support. this is the first big test to see if people want to come out to large crowds and a public event. there will be extra security precautions visible and on hand. tonight will be the kickoff of

the gilroy rodeo. that starts at 6:00 tonight. it kicks off with a barrel race. about 6,500 people are expected to come out to watch the bucking broncos and other attractions. the event raises money for community projects and scholarships, but law enforcement will have a beefed up presence. the tragedy at the garlic festival is so fresh, it's unclear how many people will attend. on another front we're learning that the recent mass shootings could have an impact on tourism as well. some countries are warning citizens about the possibility of gun violence while traveling in the u.s. several are issuing traveling alerts. venezuela suggests delaying travel to the u.s. and pointing out dangerous citying such as o cities such as oakland. >> because it has happened so many times, people, you know, when they come to the states,

they know they have to watch out. >> now those warnings urge tourists to avoid large crowds, popular venues and popular attractions. also now in terms of trying to deal with gun violence tonight, eric swalwell is having a community forum on how to deal with gun violence and domestic terrorism. that forum starts at 6:30 at the hayward city council chambers. roz plater, nbc bay area news. >> nopefully that wihopefully t well-attended event. the investigation into the garlic festival mass shooting is coming into focus. the fbi yesterday announced the shooting is now a case of domestic terrorism. investigators say the teenage gunman had a list of targets including places of worship and political organizations.

the fbi says it's now reaching out to those listed, but the groups are not being publicly identified. >> we're striving to find several things -- what, if any, ideology he settled on. who, if anyone, he may have been in contact with regarding the ideologies. who, if anyone, helped him or had advanced knowledge of his intentions. >> at this point, investigators say it's too early to know if the gunman should be considered a white supremacist, but they say he was interested in violent ideologies. today president trump and the first lady plan to visit dayton and el paso. the two cities most eventually shattered by mass shootings. in el paso, at least, not everybody is thrilled about the president's visit. the democratic congresswoman is refusing to, as she says, be an accessory to the president's visit. 22 people died at the walmart in el paso.

police think the gunman was fueled by racial hatred. he used several key phrases that the president also uses. el paso has been the focus of much of the president's rhetoric against immigration. the former girlfriend of the dayton gunman is speaking out about what she said were red flags during their relationship. among them she tells nbc he showed her a mass shooting video on their first date. she said the two bonded over their shared struggles with mental illness. >> this is a man who was in pain and didn't get the help he needed. people go every day being perfectly fine, having mental illness, me included. and he just -- he got the short end of the stick. no support system. >> nbc news has not confirmed that he suffered from mental illness, but as we have reported, the gunman's sister was among the

nine people killed. investigators are still working to pinpoint a motive in the shooting. developing this morning in south korea, authorities have given up hope in finding a missing 5-year-old girl alive. >> nevaeh lashy adams is still officially considered missing, but her mother was found dead at their apartment on monday. authorities say her mother's boyfriend has confessed to killing both the mother and the little girl. back here at home, downed power lines last night called a small grass fire near elmwood jail in milpitas. firefighters quickly put it out and power was restored. for the next few days firefighters are paying attention to an area where the weekend grass fire burned near clayton. the marsh creek fire burned 750 acres. the cause has not been determined. outside our newsroom, firefighters had to put out a small grass fire yesterday in what was a vacant lot.

the fire burned about five acres near nbc bay area's studios in san jose. not far from component and orchard parkway. the cause is under investigation. the contra costa mres department will have eyes over head. the police have three new drones. they were unveiled last night. happening today at 49ers camp in santa clara, the they will pay tribute to dwight clark. he died of a.l.s. one year ago. a new book called letters to 87 is being released today inspired by an nba bay area sports documentary. niners fans are happy to see this guy on the field. running back jerick mckinnen signed a free agent deal last year but missioned the season after injuring his knee. the niners host the cowboys saturday at levi stadium. wie want to get back to our breaking traffic news.

>> over here, the flashing lights. two right lanes are blocked. the left lane only getting by. this is eastbound 92 heading past the exit at eden landing road. the volume of traffic, as we look out to the map system, there's a slower drive developing. counter-commute, yes, but more volume coming across from the peninsula to the hayward side. westbound, we're holdingdumbartr of that activity. 880 at high street northbound, there was a crash. northbound side is impacted because of debris the roadway. tracking that. a lot of slowing there. maybe a traffic break. we'll track that. the rest of this shot looks great. still a traffic alert for the north bay, highway 29, the northbound side is closed. the southbound side of highway 29 is opened now once again.

now. good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm scott mcgrew. you might want to stay in bed, you have got traffic messes all over the bay area. >> we do. be careful. overall the lighter traffic flow, but we have bigger incidents to deal with now. this is the first one. over on the right, that tow truck still off the embank mtd. now the other tow truck in the middle, this is not biggest tow truck they have, but this medium-sized rig is hooking up to hook up to that tow truck with a car on the back of it. they're just now moving into place to hopefully clear this from the roadway. right now two of the three lanes getting over into hayward, near the eden landing road sign, that's blocked.
