now. good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm scott mcgrew. you might want to stay in bed, you have got traffic messes all over the bay area. >> we do. be careful. overall the lighter traffic flow, but we have bigger incidents to deal with now. this is the first one. over on the right, that tow truck still off the embank mtd. now the other tow truck in the middle, this is not biggest tow truck they have, but this medium-sized rig is hooking up to hook up to that tow truck with a car on the back of it. they're just now moving into place to hopefully clear this from the roadway. right now two of the three lanes getting over into hayward, near the eden landing road sign, that's blocked. d.o.t., the department of

transportation just arrived, i believe they said you can ruin this wi -- you can move this without ruining the roadway. so they're doing that. so there is that distraction. the counter-commute drive is slowing as you pass that one lane. westbound is the commute direction there. dumbarton bridge moving smoothly. 880 north, two crashes cleared to the shoulder in oakland. that has slowed you down. and a second traffic alert, up in st. helena, northbound highway 29 is still closed. used zinfandel as an alternate. >> a pleasant start to the day with mostly clear skies across many of our microclimates. let's get you out the door in palo alto a live look out there. temperatures will start out cool. upper 50s. more sunshine, lower humidity and lower temperatures.

we'll talk about what's going on for the rest of the week coming up. >> thank you. president trump heads to texas then to ohio following last weekend's deadly mass shooting. >> but the president could get a chill y reception particularly n el paso. let's go live to tracie potts in washington, d.c. el paso is 80% hispanic. they're feeling pretty left out by what the president had to say. >> well, and left out because he didn't mention the latino community when he spoke on monday. some people want to talk to him about that. he has already been talking overnight on twitter with beto o'rourke. he's the presidential candidate from el paso. he told him to be respectedful and quiet. beto o'rourke responding with 22 people dead in his home noun, neither the city nor ewihe will quiet about that.

president trump is already getting a chilly reception from arriving in el paso today. >> he is the top dog of white supremacists and white nationalists. >> reporter: some residents say they're upset that the president never mentioned latinos in his speech on monday. some believe the president's own words mentioned in the texas shooter's writings are stirring up violence. >> when they have a president who is racist and whips people up in a frenzy at rallies, when people yell we'll shoot them and he doesn't stop to think, oh, my god, what am i doing? >> reporter: a similar tone in dayton where the mayor seems less than enthusiastic about president trump's arrival today. >> he's the president of the united states, he does his calendar, i do mine. >> reporter: ohio's republican governor is doing what congress hasn't. >> i'm asking the general assembly to pass a law that requires background checks. >> reporter: so far mitch mcconnell is ignoring calls to bring lawmakers back to washington early to do that.

ing a nerve among immigration rights groups concerned about the crisis at the border. organizers are holding a vigil in the mission district demanding action against the white supremacist ideologies and the violence tied to it. similar vigils are being planned around the nation. the vigil tonight starts at 7:00 at the 24th street b.a.r.t. station. our local coverage continues at 6:30. we'll be live in gilroy with the new community event set to begin there and we'll have an update to the investigation into that shooting. and a former president's gun forum in the east bay and the warning other countries are giving about the u.s. juul is the focus of a viral social media post warning teens to stay away from the product. this comes as the company prepares to battle legislation across the country, including here in san francisco planning to ban the product altogether. you. this florida teen sharing what calls his near-death experience from using juul over the years. this was first reported in the daily mail. this is the teenager we're talking about, chance amarada. he shared his story on social media with thous o followers. he claims his lung collapse due to damage from the toxic chemicals in juul pods. he said he vaped one juul pod every two days and wants to share his stories on what he believes are the dangers of the product. eight last month eight teens in wisconsin were hospitalized with severe lung damage because of vaping. there was extreme coughing, fatigue and shortness of breathe. parts of the country are working on legislation to curb the use of e-cigarettes by youth. two months ago the san francisco board of supervisors voted to ban the sales of e-cigarettes until there is more review by the fda. several states have raised the

age of buying tobacco to 21. a federal mandate is getting support from juul and other tobacco companies as well. reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, pete. it's 6:06. an oakland safeway that got caught selling alcohol to miners will not be allowed to sell alcohol for two months. they were caught selling to minors three times over the last three years. a 60-day suspension will be followed bay three-year probation period. happening today, a bail hearing for peru's ex-president who is in a san francisco jail. he has been there since last month after he was arrested for charges that he faces in peru. he is accused of taking $20 million in bribes from a brazilian construction company while in office. he denies the charges. an extradition hearing is still pending. before the arrest he was working as a visiting professor at stanford. and new this morning,

there's new measles concerns in southern california for folks who have not been vaccinated. they're being warned about someone with the virus who passed through union station in los angeles. that was on july 23rd. l.a. county health leaders say there have been 16 measles cases in the county this year. they are reminding people who have not been vaccinated to get vaccinated as soon as possible. new video this morning, typhoon francisco made landfall in southwestern japan. wins were up to 88 miles per hour. flights were canceled, train service suspended, an evacuation advisory was issued for 20,000 people. up to seven inches of rain is expected in some spots. officials are asking residents to stay on high alert for landslides and floods. this is the eighth typhoon to strike japan this year. let's look at your morning commuted with kari. >> dealing with more quiet

weather and cooler temperatures today. out if brentwood, starting out with lower 60s, a lot of sunshine today. our climb in temperatures happens more slowly, but it will still be a warm day, reaching 83 degrees in the early afternoon hours. a look at today's forecast with our live camera showing the high temperature for the south bay up to about 80 degrees, peninsula breezy and 74. in the tri valley, cooler air there. lower 80s in the north bay, it stays foggy in san francisco. the east bay reaches 76 degrees. the temperature trend for the east bay coming up and mike has a look at the drive for you. >> i have just seen them make good progress pulling the tow truck from the side of the road. the reason we're not showing that live picture is because our photographer allen is talking to chp now. from what i understand they're trying to get things cleared between 6:30 and 7:00 at the

tensions between the u.s. and china still linger as president trump threatened a new round of tariffs. disney's ceo bob iger says the company will offer a streaming service for disney plus, hulu and espn plus for 1.99 1.99 -- 12.99 a month. the bundle price is cheaper than or or participant with rivals including netflix and amazon prime. it's also significantly cheaper of hbo max, which is $16 to $17 a month. hulu is 5.99 a month with ads, espn is $4.99 a month. and twitter is testing a snooze button which will mute the app's push notifications for a time. so one hour, three hours, 12 hours. you will still see new replies and tweets in the notifications tab where they will gather until you're ready to look at them or swipe them away. this could be twitter's answer to other social network

today and some breezy winds. here we are at 10:00. livermore at 68. 61 in napa. san mateo, 65. if you're thinking oabout headig out late for lunch, it will be 63 in fremont. take it outside, we'll have nice weather. into the evening commute, we're at 72 in san mateo. nap ta aa at 78, concord at 84 degrees. in some spots we're about ten degrees lower than yesterday. approaching sunset, temperatures dropping back into the 60s and cooling off into the 50s tonight. our temperatures drop as the humidity goes down. we'll watch this area of low pressure. this is a storm system that will move into the pacific net. as it does, it will bring in a slight chance of rain for saturday for areas just north of the beay area.

mend seocino and northward a slt chance of rain. then temperatures will start to heat up. we'll have a lot of changes here over the next several days. look at how our inland temperatures go from the low 80s through the end of the week to the low 90s, even upper 90s by next tuesday. we'll have a big range in temperatures from day-to-day. looking at sfraechan francisco, have a wide range from the coast to the inland valleys, reaching into the upper 60s and low 70s for the weekend. mike, you have an update on the san mateo bridge? >> i do. great progress over here. allen, our photographer zoomed n you can see that tow truck. this tow truck, you can see the tail end of it and the car on the back of it, they were over here in the gully. i saw this big chunk of fencing got pulled up there. that person from atlas towing just snipped off the fencing. that's progress. i'm hoping they can clear this

quickly out of the area over the next 20 minutes. chp and caltrans thought maybe by 6:30 it will be cleared. that won't be the case. what's going on, this is blocking two out of three lanes. this is eastbound 92 getting off of the san mateo bridge, with the lighter volume of traffic coming towards us. that is jaming ingjamming up a landing road. the good news is it's counter-commute and shy of the interchange of 880 north and south. so that's not causing as much of a problem as it could. westbound has a typical build for a wednesday. traffic flow is moving nicely overall. the dumbarton bridge and 101 not seeing additional traffic. a crash in san mateo will complicate things at hillsdale. west 580, a crash near livermore avenue. and north 880 a couple of crashes tying up traffic a bit.

new this morning a tennessee woman serving a life sentence for murder is out of prison this morning and again free. you might remember her story. the 31-year-old was convicted of killing a man when she was 16. 43-year-old johnny allen hired her for sex and brown claims she shot him in self-defense because she thought he was reaching for a gun while they were in bed. prosecutors argued she was committing robbery. her story got national attention as well as celebrities who paid attention like rihanna. they advocated for her freedom. tennessee's governor allowed her release in january. a former "empire" actor, jussie smollett, is asking a judge to toss the civil suit filed against him by the city of chicago. the city is seeking $130,000 tied to the costs of

investigating that attack against him that he claimed was a racial attack. prosecutors dropped his hoax related criminal charges. he always maintained he was attacked. the china trade war so far appears to be having minimal impact on shipping volume through the port of oakland. port leaders say operations have been steady. and imported goods were front-loaded from china before the tariffs took effect. they say president trump's new round of proposed tariffs are still a wildcard. nbc bay area responds to a north bay doctor with a big phone problem at his office. >> he asked chris chmura and his team to help find a cure. >> good morning. dr. jack waxman operates a clinic in santa rosa. late last year he moved to a new location a few miles down the road. but the at&t phone lines at his new office didn't work. it took a month to get them ringing again. while he waited for the phone to

after the shootings in gilroy, el paso and dayton. >> some communities are feeling edgy. and that can cause panic-filled moments. look at the pandemonium that happened in new york's times square last night. people just running after what they thought sounded like gunshots. listen to this witness. >> people were screaming and crying, climbing over each other. everyone thought there was a shooter coming down the street. and i thought i was going to watch my daughter get shot down in front of me. >> you can imagine their panic. one person heard what they thought was gunfire, but it was a motorcycle backfiring. one person was hurt in the chaos but is expected to be okay. in chicago, reports of shots fired at walmart had people rushing in. this happened in bedford park. shoppers reported hearing several shots but only a single shell casing was found. no injuries were reported. tensions running high in

gilroy a little more than a week after a mass shooting shook that small community. tonight gilroy residents will gather for another large-scale event. roz plater is there. >> it's been a traumatic week for everybody. we're out here where this rodeo will be taking place, this is off dunlap avenue here. this will be the first real test of whether or not people feel safe and comfortable enough to come out in a large-scale crowd. that starts at 6:00 tonight. it kicks off with a barrel race. about 6,500 people are expected to come out to watch the bucking broncos and other attractions. the event raises money for community projects and scholarships, but law enforcement will have a beefed up presence here especially

around the perimeter of the event. the tragedy at the garlic festival is so fresh, it's unclear how many people will attend. on another front we're learning that the recent mass shootings could have an impact on tourism as well. several countries are advising their citizens that america is not safe because of gun violence. those new warnings say gun violence could happen anywhere in the u.s. but visitors should be extra careful. many say they know about the dangers, even though their families are worried. >> just be careful. >> it did cross my mind. >> now those warnings urge tourists to avoid large crowds, popular venues and popular attractions. also now in terms of trying to deal with gun violence tonight, eric swalwell is having a community forum on how to deal with gun violence and domestic terrorism. that forum starts at 6:30 at the hayward city council chambers. live in gilroy, roz plater, nbc bay area news. >> thanks.

we're staying on top of everything that is happening in gilroy for you. the investigation coming into focus on this shooting. the focus is increasingly pointing to hate as a primary motive. the fbi yesterday announced the shooting is now being investigated as a case of domestic terrori investigators say the teenage gunman had a list of targets including places of worship and political organizations. the fbi says it's now reaching out to those listed, but the groups are not being publicly identified. >> we're striving to find several things -- what, if any, ideology he settled on. who, if anyone, he may have been in contact with regarding the ideologies. who, if anyone, helped him or had advanced knowledge of his intentions. >> at this point, investigators say it's too early to know if the gunman should be considered a white supremacist, but they say he was interested in violent ideologies.

still no verdict in the ghost ship warehouse fire trial. today marks one week since deliberations started. the nine women and three men are deciding if the defendants are guilty of 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. if convicted they face up to 39 years in prison. for the next few days firefighters will keep a close eye on the area where a weekend grass fire burned near clayton. the marsh fire burned more than 750 acres after it started early saturday morning a s a series o fires. a contra costa police department will have eyes over head. san pablo police have throw new drones. they can stay in the air for more than an hour. they were unveiled at the local national night out last night. happening today at 49ers camp in santa clara, the team will pay tribute to dwight

>> j.j. watt, 290. she have let that boy break the seat on that bike. let's get you out to the san mateo bridge, not broken but the commute is impacted by this broken fencing. we are here, tow truck pulled -- this tow truck pulled this tow truck from the side of the road. that was hooked up to this fencing that it took out. these four folks are trying desperately to roll all of this cyclone fencing that was dragged out of the marsh back off of the roadway. once they clear that i'm hoping they can clear 92 eastbound. you notice this medium-sized tow truck? it has to turn around and go the other way. that's why as we look back at our camera, they may have to stop those folks from coming into that area. we see the eastbound flow coming towards us. that's the issue right there.

work on that car. flames spread to the side of the home and a balcony on the second story. firefighters were able to knock it down after that. everybody got out safely. anyone flying british airways today may want to prepare for turbulence even before they get on the plane. passengers at some airports are reportedly talking about total chaos because of a major computer failure. some planes are grounded, there are also major disruptions at the major uk hubs. british airways says they're resorting to manual systems to check those passengers in. a tourist fell to his death at yosemite national park. that's the third time it's happened in the last week. this time it was a 21-year-old tourist from romania. park rangers believe he ignored posted warning signs, climbed up one of the waterfalls at 600 feet, 60 stories in the air, he slipped on a rock. now there's a warning to the 800,000 tourists that will

visit yosemite this month alone, be careful. the park said we provide safety information but ultimately it's up to the park visitor to make good decisions. the park is huge, it's impossible for park rangers to patrol everywhere. the oldest lion at oakland zoo has died. leonard was 19. he was euthanized on sunday. he suffered from severe and progressive arthritis and kidney disease. he was a 6-month-old cub when he and his sister sandy came to the zoo in 2000. they were rescued from a private home. sandy died in 2016 from cancer. leonard had no offspring. he was the eddest of foldest of lions at the zoo. san jose leaders signed a seven-figure check in a dispute with santa rosa.

enjoying cooler temperatures and breezy wins and sunshine. you're seeing that come through the window now. you do still need a jacket to start out this morning. going through the day, short sleeves will keep you comfortable. here's what's happening with the weather setup. the humidity and the temperatures will drop. we'll watch this storm system to our north bring in a stronger ocean breeze. look at what happens this weekend. there will be some rain passing just to the north of the bay area. mendocino north, there will be a chance of showers on saturday. and we're going to continue to watch that. it's still warm in the valleys, especially on sunday. our temperatures head down to the low 80s over the next few days. then we start the trend back up. it's going to be hot early next week. look at those upper 90s in the forecast for monday and tuesday. for san francisco, we're staying in the 60s through at least the next several days. then some low 70s in the forecast with mostly sunny skies. i do think we'll see more in the

way of clouds on saturday. we'll have that wide range in temperatures still. mike, you're seeing lots of fencing to move off of the freeway. >> that's right. we watched as those caltrans workers pushed desperately getting that fencing off the roadway. just seconds ago i watched the tow truck clear, and that fencing has been pushed off of the pavement. so it looks like we have traffic that should be able to flow. we only have one lane traveling past this scene still. i will say in the next few minutes, the flares should be kicked out of the roadway and they should be clearing. that's east highway 92 at eden landing road. so that will hopefully recover as those flares will get cleared. i won't give the all-clear until chp does that. the conditions looks like they should be able to open all lanes. westbound, we are seeing the typical build across the san mateo bridge, off of the nimitz

freewa freeway. there was a crash on 880 south in hayward that was moved off to the shoulder. that makes this one area slow. look how great and light this volume of traffic is. the south bay pushing up off of highway 101. 87 seeing mild slowing and recovering from an earlier crash. the volume is building north of 680. a smooth dry towards the bay bridge. we have it at 24 minutes from highway 4 to the bay bridge backup. happening now, hundreds of lawyers taking part in a peaceful march in central hong kong. one of many demonstrations going on in that city. protesters are against a possible new extradition law that could have wide-ranging affects. next, a quick look at your top stories including trouble for safeway. the product one specific store is no longer allowed to sell. plus -- >> look, he's the president of the united states.
