welcome back. thank you for joining us. i am scott mcgrew in for marcus washington this morning. >> i am in for laura garcia. we have a fiery crash in morgan hill. this is what firefighters were up against this morning. it was absolute chaos out there. firefighters say it's something unlike anything they have seen. >> we heard audible gasp in the news room as we got these pictures in, and it's just astonishing. one of the worst accidents we have seen in a good long time we have mike -- we'll start with bob, and bob is live out on the

scene. tell us the latest of what you know. >> reporter: a fire captain did tell us he has never seen an accident like this where you have four cars involved in the same accident and all catch fire and become fully engulfed. the remains are out here south of highway 85 on the 101. one driver was not able to get out of their vehicle and died in the crash. this happened around 3:30 this morning and it's not clear what caused this crash and we know it's a chain collision involving four sedans involving one person in each car, and one driver died, and two others went to the hospital, and then the fourth driver walked away, he was on his regular commute from silicon valley and going about 70 miles per hour, and he swerved to avoid a plastic wheel fender in

the road and ended up colliding with one of the cars. >> all i know, there were a couple cars here when i stopped, and when i came to a rest the car next to me caught on fire and that's what caused the fire. >> what did you do? >> i jumped out and ran over to the side, and prayed to god that i am still alive. >> reporter: that driver was pretty shooken up understandably considering you had one person that died and two taken to the hospital, and fortunately he walked away with no injuries. as far as the commute goes, northbound 101 all lanes shut down, and there's a backup about

a mile and a half and could be longer now that we are getting into that morning commute. >> that guy looked so shaken up, and he should count his lucky stars because it's shocking he was able to walk away without a scratch. thanks, bob. we want to send it over to mike who is tracking the reroutes. >> yeah, it's odd for me to be standing in front of the picture, and i wanted people to see what we got over twitter from the san jose fire department. this was the scene when there was an active fire going on, this vehicle right here upsidedown, and the chp report talks about one vehicle that hit the center divide and flipped over on its roof, and there are three others there on fire, and one of those from the gentleman we just heard from who walked away before his car caught fire. they have managed to talk about one lane as bob talked about. bob was talking about a mile and

a half of backup, and we have over two miles of backup now, and this is just easing into the morning commute. right now your best avenue to get off is at bailey and then take saint teresa boulevard. already we are seeing the slowdown start at san martin, and for your normal commute you may be backed up to cochran and that's far back from the crash approaching 85. this will be a nightmare for the driver coming in from gilroy or san martin. it will keep things in silicon valley at bay until they clean up that crash. as you get ready to head out the door it's nice and cool in san jose with temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s. downtown at 58 degrees at 6:00, and as we go into the rest of the day, mostly sunny skies and

we are in for cooler weather as we go into the afternoon. we will talk about warmer weather for the weekend in a few minutes. it's 5:04 on your thursday morning, and there's a pattern, a bloody shooting spree and calls for gun control, and americans are wondering will congress act, more specifically with mitch mcconnell and the gop, and there are already universal background check bills that the president supports that have been passed by the house and is waiting for congress to vote on it. tracie potts is on capitol hill. >> we had an amazing day. >> fresh from seeing the anger and pain in data and el paso, president trump is promising action on gun control. >> i think we can bring up background checks like we never have before. >> if the president says pass

legislation for universal background checks, the republican congress and senate will move on it. >> so far mitch mcconnell has ignored calls to bring lawmakers back early for a vote. >> i am not holding my breath. >> republican, lindsay graham, says he will introduce a red flag bill that allows authorities to temporarily seize weapons from people deemed a threat. >> we are trying to get guns out of the hands of people who are dangerous. >> critics say that's not nearly enough. >> we must require federal licensing for guns in america. >> others are pushing for bans on automatic weapons. >> there's not an appetite for that. >> timing is everything. gun control advocates are hoping to seize the moment to get

something done. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. >> visitations have begun for victims of the mass shootings, one will be held in pennsylvania today. he was finishing his master's degree in cancer care when he was shot and killed in dayton, and in el paso there's a visitation for one of the victims killed in the walmart store. ten days after the gilroy garlic festival shooting, people attended another event, and here 8 public safety director. >> we're going to have voluntary security, a mounted unit out in the parking lot, and santa clara county sheriff's department will be out here so we will have deputies out here along with our

paid security. >> the event got under way with a prayer, and the rodeo ramps up tomorrow when the competition gets under way. the largest workplace immigration raid in more than a decade. 680 people are detained this morning after i.c.e. agents raided seven chicken processing plants in rural mississippi. some have worked at that plan the for years. >> they made all this money for the company, and now y'all want to come and snatch them up. >> while we do welcome folks r from other countries, they have to follow our laws. >> authorities set up perimeters around each plant to make sure the workers could not escape.

the fed is hoping to fix a problem in san francisco, and the u.s. justice department is focusing on drugs. u.s. attorney for northern california, dave anderson, says agents will concentrate on drug problems, and his office already shutdown two drug trafficking operations. this comes after repeated criticism of san francisco's problems by the president. this morning there may be a new momentum after several near misses on the tarmac at san francisco international airport. later today, the famed pilot, "sully" sullengerger will be there. today, "today in the bay," we go to what is happening at sfo now.

>> reporter: good morning. there are a number of near-misses taking place here at sfo, and one congressman wants to fix the problem with new legislation. this was from a couple years ago, and this is from july of 2017 when an air canada plane came close to hitting planes waiting for takeoff. the pilot aborting the landing before hearing from the control tower. this is one of many close calls within a 16 month period, and they were due to pilot error, and the safe landing act would address aviation safety that attributed to these problems, and the panel will be joined by "sully" sullengerger, he has

been outspoken on two recent crashes involving the boeing 737s, citing what he feels is a cozy relationship between the industry and regulators. we will know more about that during a press conference here at 12:00. at 5:11, we have new details on the state's deadliest wildfire, the camp fire, nine months after the wildfire destroyed the town of paradise, now we know the death toll is going even higher. "the chronicle" reports this morning that 72-year-old paul earnest died this week from burns he suffered while escaping with his wife. he saved his wife's life by covering from her flames, and she was living off a ventilator for the last few months but passed away at a rehabilitation

center. his wife is living in chico and learning how to walkgain. lightning striking the statue of liberty during a wild round of severe weather yesterday. the afternoon storms caused downed trees and power lines across new jersey, and stunning video of a flooded commuter bus on staten island. you can see the bus and the water inside the bus as the driver tries to maneuver through the rising water, and you know what bus is backwards, right? sub. >> oh, my goodness. they needed a sub this morning. >> i apologize. go ahead and duty weather. we are going to see nice and quiet weather here at home, and we always say when you see water covering the road, turn around. that's the reason why people were just stranded out there. let's go hour-by-hour with our temperatures in the upper 50s, and at 9:00 we starting to

warm things up at noon, and if you are heading outside, do it, it's going to be beautiful all across the area. concord, 77 degrees, and low 80s today. antioch will be at 83 degrees in the middle of the afternoon while san jose stays in the 70s. it's nice to see that we will have a cooldown that continues into tomorrow, as we head back down into the upper 60s around sunset. we will be in the upper 50s, cool and windy in san francisco. we'll talk about what is coming up, that driver for drivers into silicon valley. let's just say the shoulder is available for folks traveling past the scene of the crash. you can see the silhouettes, and we will show you the pictures in the next report, but i want to show you the burned out shells of four vehicles and all the emergency crews blocking a majority of the lanes from

northbound 101. the backup here, the map here, and it goes almost three miles here, and it's heading up 101 to shy of highway 85. it's the problem backing up before bailey avenue, and you can see folks heading up towards monterey road or saint teresa boulevard. the rest of the bay showing green sensors and there's a build at the bay bridge toll plaza. police in tennessee searching for this escaped prisoner, and what they say he's already done while on the run. this is not a twist on a popular joke, this had drivers quacking up in the northeast. how cute. we are here to discuss jessie's online time.

looking at this photo, and this is sent by the san jose fire department, multiple cars on fire have northbound 101 completely blocked, and one lane is open now but one lane is not enough to handle the traffic. we're looking at a big problem from north 101. we'll track the biggest backup forming. as we take a live look inside san jose, nice cool start with upper 50s. willow glen as you head out the

door, expect it to warm up throughout the day, and mostly sunny skies. get out there and enjoy it. we will talk about a warmer weekend forecast in less than five minutes. good morning. i the dow fell nearly 600 points before nearly erasing all the losses and staging the biggest comeback of the year. several banks around the world cut interest rates following the federal reserve cut last month. the markets recovered late in the day. and instagram removed one of the marketing partners after discovering it violated the social network's policies. while it did not collect any

private information, the firm did pull data from instagram stories, and this is yet another privacy-related issue for facebook which owns instagram. netflix may have lost battles in the streaming wars with "friends" and "the office," and they have signed "game of thrones" to a production deal reportedly worth $200 million. netflix beating out amazon, disney and warner media. back to you. >> i am just waiting for "crown" to come back. >> tough competition. this had people quacking up in maine. this new video of 45 ducklings literally stopping traffic. 45. that is a traffic tie up. multiple cars lined up to watch them waddle through.

reportedly there were no honks or complaints from the drivers. we are covering something more serious happening in morgan hill. >> this is a major issue,guys this video shows the flames, and it's a huge fire as a result of a number of crashes that came through the area. four vehicles on fire, and that one in the middle, over on its roof. three others were involved there, and one death injury, and another major backup because of the northbound 101 closure and this fire. the fire is out, and this is much earlier here. the backup goes at least three miles shy of 85 past bailey and down towards concord. the live pictures from our camera where bob is showed

activity still, they had the vehicles in the middle and the investigation has to continue. the fire has long been out and we have seen a number of vehicles leave the area. from north of 85, north of 17 and 85 itself as well is just fine as far as the flow of traffic. no major problems crossing the bay or through the tri-valley. you see the taillights as crews are clearing up on 880 from the coliseum. bay bridge getting ready for the metering lights, right on schedule. our temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s as you get ready to start the day, but much cooler in santa rosa where we dropped down to 51 degrees. throughout the day it will feel very nice.

we normally don't get number like this in early august, but we're talking about 78 degrees for the high in san jose. palo alto reaches 77. oakland, 68 degrees, and 84 in antioch today, one of the warmer spots will be clear lake in the-run -- in the upper 80s. the giants' game, it's going to be cool and breezy and first pitch at 69, so bring something nice and warm to wear. and then tomorrow outside lands music festival starting at noon, and it will reach 74 before it cools off for the evening. and we have storms popping up in the southern sierra, if you are traveling and maybe hiking for the weekend, there still may be storms popping up throughout the late morning and early afternoon hours, and as we look at our

rain chances for the weekend, yes, i said rain chances, and this is mostly for the north bay early saturday morning, this really should not have a big impact on your weekend plans, but we are seeing the computer model showing unusual rain moving through the north bay, very spotty and trace amounts here, but just a heads up about that. we had the 49ers game this weekend on saturday, which, of course, looks great, and highs in the upper 70s, chris and scott. >> thanks. coming up, the most decorated in u.s. gymnastic history, simone biles opening up about a struggle returning to the flora head of the olympics in 2020 if tokyo.

it's 5:25, and happening right now in tennessee there's a manhunt for an inmate that officials say killed a worker

while escaping prison. he broke out sometime yesterday and officials suspect he killed a prison administrator while getting away. she was found in her home that she lived across the street. >> immediately following the facility was locked down and an official inmate count was conducted and at that time, inmate curtis ray watson, 364744 was found missing from a work detail. >> investigators believe watson escaped on a tractor that was found a mile from the prison. watson has previous convictions for assault, child abuse, rape and kidnapping and is considered armed and dangerous. new this morning, gymnast simone biles is talking about

how difficult it has been to return to the floor in the wake of the larry nassar sexual abuse scandal. she says she has been incredibly shaken by the scandal and puts the blame for what she and so many athletes suffered scarily on usa gymnastics. much of the coverage here will air on nbc network. >> hopefully she can do what she does best. she deserves it. we are staying on top of a major traffic alert in the south bay. several lanes shutdown after this fiery crash overnight, and mike inouye is tracking detours, and bob redell is on the scene with what you can expect through the morning.

♪ try my $4.99 barbeque bacon double cheeseburger combo. that is the sound of a heck of a firefight this morning. right now at 5:30, a horrific scene in the south bay where four cars caught fire, completely engulfed after a horrible crash on highway 101 overnight. it's a dramatic situation that is continuing this morning. >> you can say this a lot, but it really does look like a war zone. horrifying pictures taken by the san jose fire department. i think all of us here in the news room are shocked as well. it's just astonishing. good morning to you. i am scott mcgrew in for marcus

washington. >> i am kris sanchez in for laura garcia. there's another shocking fact and we want to get back out to bob redell who is live on the scene. one person walked away without a scratch, bob. >> reporter: yeah, and they prayed to god they are still alive, and unfortunately one person did die here on the 101. it's going to be two or three hours to get this out of the way and open, and right now only one lane on the side is open. there are four sedans in front of you and all four of them were involved in a chain collision accident and all four caught fire and burned down to their frames. you can look to the left, and the chp officers are taking measurements of the cars right now. again, we are not 100% sure what caused this accident, but it was a chain collision. four vehicles collided, all four

caught fire, and one person, a driver in one of the vehicles never made it out and sadly did die, and the drivers in the other vehicles, two was transported to the hospital, one with moderate and the other with minor injuries, and then there was a driver on his way to san jose for his regular commute, he walked away -- he tells me he doesn't remember much, just that he incountered some debris. >> i don't know if anybody else hit it prior, or if there was an accident prior to that that caused me to get in the accident. >> reporter: are you okay? >> yeah, i'm okay but just shooken up and in shock. >> reporter: i just spoke to a chp officer and he said it was unusual to have four vehicles in the same accident to catch fire

like they did here. when we came through here around 4:30, there was about a mile and a half backup and i only imagine that extended further south because we are more into the morning commute. northbound 101 just south of highway 85, if you are commuting from gilroy, morgan hill or hollister, just something to keep in mind. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> mike, you as well, just astonished by the violence of the crash. >> shocking. as we talked about it, four vehicles all completely burned to the shell, and that's a dramatic scene, and the loss of one life. we are concerned for the folks involved, but we are looking at the backup now.

almost five miles, halfway between bailey and cochran. santa teresa will see more traffic. looks like they won't open the lanes until 7:30 or 8:00, and that's a horrible time for the south bay commute, and kari looking at the maps here, the rest of the bay shows a nice smooth drive. as we head further up into palo alto, we have temperatures in the low 60s. it will be a nice and overall cooler day for the bay area. i will talk more about the weekend forecast coming up in about six minutes. coming now to the mass shootings here at home and across the country, el paso now

going through what gilroy experienc experienced days after the attack. el paso native and presidential candidate, beto o'rourke, was among the crowd. the president spent much of yesterday visiting victims in el paso and dayton along with first responders and local leaders. among the president's stops yesterday was the emergency operation center in el paso, accompanied by the first lady. he praised the first responders. >> they have done an incredible job. both places just incredible. the enthusiasm, the love and respect, and let's see if we can get something done, and republicans and democrats want to do it. >> the white house released these pictures in the hospital, and trump later said i wish you could have seen it.

tracie potts will have more on the president's visit coming up in the next half hour. 5:35 right now, and meantime an east bay congressman that had been in the crowded field to run for president was in hayward talking to his constituents about banning assault rifles once again. eric swalwell had a town meeting last night and the room was packed with people that wanted to talk about their fears and changing laws to once again ban assault rifles. many people were asking questions and giving him ideas. >> all of you need to be on tv every night blanketing the airwaves -- >> we have to look at what are the root causes of gun violence. >> i introduced a assault wellen ban and buy back. >> congress is on break but swalwell said he would be willing to go back to d.c. early to deal with what he calls a crisis. he will continue to be available to listen to the people of his

district. we continue to monitor the situation on 101, and meanwhile an east bay crash involving a big rig on the ramp connecting 580 to southbound 680 in pleasa pleasanton. two popular gyms are in the middle of a political controversy this morning and it might have you rethinking your workout today. some people quitting memberships altogether. >> this is the chairman of equinox and soulcycle's parent company, and he is hosting a fund-raiser for the president later this week. some customers are calling for boycott of the gyms, including several celebrities, and that's trending on twitter. some say it's hurtful because

soulcycle supports the lgbt community. >> they are supporting somebody who is completely against what we believe. >> they say they have nothing to do with the fund-raiser itself, only the chairman of the parent company does, and the companies themselves say they don't support it. happening today, a south bay school district decides paying for campus school officers or other resources. they face a $14 million deficit. they are considering slashing funds for campus safety. a school board member says it's a tough decision, especially with school and mass shootings on the rise. >> it is certainly hard to come to grips with the fact that in communities around the country, the latino community has been targeted, but it's a reality we need to face. >> that tough decision comes

tonight with a budget vote at the school board meeting and we will be there. at least one building is destroyed after a fast-moving fire charred 50 acres and prompted people to leave their homes. dry brush fueled the flames on wednesday afternoon near an oakley neighborhood. the fire is completely out but crews were on the scene early this morning watching for hot spots. people along sellers avenue were told to get out of their homes as a precaution. here's the fire marshal. >> we did have the call for an evacuation for about approximately 50 homes. >> oakley residents were allowed to return to their homes last night. it's 5:39 on your thursday morning, and if you are just joining us, mike is monitoring an awful crash on northbound 101. >> traffic really backed up on northbound 101. when bob redell got on scene

before our 4:30 report, we had a mile backup and now we are almost at five miles, and it's back to the exit for the coyote creek golf course. it doesn't get you over to monterey road easily. further back at cochran, you can access bailey. this backup because of the fire and the charred vehicle n shells on the freeway blocking all but the far right lane. that keeps the rest of the south bay heading in through silicon valley at a lighter volume. i do want to call out that we do have slowing in oakland past the coliseum. you will notice at the top of the screen they are starting to clear the construction crew, but that's the backup here, starting to recover as the folks head up

to the bay bridge. the crash is out of morgan hill and approaching highway 85, where only that slow lane is open. >> all right. meanwhile it's thursday, and i think we can say -- i don't know about monday where we're looking forward to the weekend, but on thursday, yeah. >> yeah, there's a lot of events going on. it's teen science tomorrow night, and this is a free event, maybe one of the last weekends before they head back to school so let's kick off learning a little early. we will have great weather for that, and in the mid-60s throughout the evening. and for the overall saturday forecast, more clouds at the coast, and the bay reaching the upper 80s and for the inland areas, they will reach up to the mid-80s. we are just saying heads up for the north bay, there could be showers moving through early on saturday.

we have the 49ers pre-season game against the cowboys this weekend. at kickoff we are in the upper 70s. it will be breezy, but overall at half-time we are feeling mild temperatures as we stay in the 70s. the raiders will be celebrating this weekend with a pre-season game, and low 70s there. we will talk about today's temperature trend coming up in three minutes. a fire, and it's suspicious. we will tell you who police in hawaii are looking for after at least three hotel fires. and parade controversy, and why opponents don't want them on the streets. sz

backup at a critical point entering san jose. we will talk about what we see for the morning commute. we will go back to mike the minute we have an update. meantime, investigators in southern california searching for a motive in a stabbing spree that left several people dead. there were several stabbings over the span of two hours last night. the suspect was caught, and he apparently had no connection to any of the victims. new this morning, an arson investigation is under way in honolulu right now. police are asking people if they recognize the man in these surveillance photos. officers say that man was seen at the scene of three fires at three different hotels. one of the fires did cause $2 million worth of damage.

and then the push for a straight pride parade in modesto. local chiropractor is one of the organizers and he had a heated exchange with council members and residents. listen. >> you pulled the race card. you pulled the race card, and all of you are racist clowns. >> outside city hall dozens of people gathered to protect that event. matthew mason is the gay man and he says the straight pride coalition has a hidden white supremacy agenda. >> the jewel of our parks and recreation. >> there's a core group that has the same beliefs, and we want to take it across the nation, and we can start here just as well as anywhere else. >> you heard there, the city council is expected to make a decision on that event soon. it's planned for the 24th.

5:47, and decision 2020. many leading democratic presidential contenders will head to the iowa state fair. former vice president joe biden and montana governor plan to be there today. candidates typically give speeches at the fair. the fair continues through the 18th. mike, you have more information on the astonishing crash. >> we have a live look, you can see all of this work that has to be done and is being done. we just saw the flatbed tow truck load one vehicle on in the lower left-hand corner, and we see the shells of the others. i will step in and talk you through this. we have just the slow lane, or the shoulder getting by on the

101. all of this activity, one, two, three vehicles, and another one over here and all the debris and cleaning up after the fire as well, and we are looking at perhaps after 8:00 until they open the lanes with all the activity. with the map, we have the slowdown and it extends five miles and to coyote creek golf course, and then it approaches 85 and the split. we see northbound 101, and also on bailey getting over towards san santa teresa boulevard. all of these folks heading up the 101 are facing this, and some getting on monterey road up towards bailey, it's a huge

issue getting into silicon valley. we have recovery here. north 880, we had a jam as construction crews were clearing over the last half hour, and now getting up to the speed limit as you head up towards the maze. there's a much different view there, but the same view at the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights are on. we have something refreshing to talk about in the weather department, cooler air as we look out live outside in san francisco. in fremont, if you are headed to the warm springs bart station, grab a jacket. skies clear around 9:00. we will see the temperature slowly warming up today, and in fact it will be cooler than the weather we have had all week long.

antioch, you are headed up to 84 degrees, and most part of the bay area can leave the air-conditioning off today. by saturday look at that, you see green and that shows potential of spotty showers especially over the north bay. this is early saturday morning, and then it starts to clear out for saturday afternoon. as we go into the beginning of next week it heats up but there will be another storm system approaching that could bring cooling by next wednesday into thursday, so the spike in temperatures won't last that long. if you are going to the san jose jazzing summer fest, you will have an amazing time, 80s in the middle of the day. temperatures will heat up and we will watch out for rain chances to the north. sunday in the upper 80s, and then look at that spike in the
