we are back with a food trend we've been hearing a lot about lately meatless meat. meat that looks and tastes like the real thing, and it's become big business in just a year, plant-based meat sales increased by 26%, bringing in more than $800 million. more restaurants are adding it to the menu. options popping up in stores as well but is it really a healthier option dave zinczenko is a "today" show contributor and founder of east this, not that good to see you. these are all the rage now first of all, what constitutes meatless meat, fake meat if you will >> first of all, it's meat made from plants, that's number one and second these companies were able to to replicate almost perfectly the taste, texture and chemical composition of burgers
8:37 am
in this case unlike a typical veggie burger of the past, they are trying to get it to taste like meat so you will eat more of them. >> they even cook like your reques traditional burgers? >> exactly the same. >> this is a regular burger. i know what these taste like. >> well, if we go through the nutritionals on them, what you will see for something like beef, it's going to come in -- and feel free to try any of these, it's going to come in at about 287 calories normally. it has 75 milligrams of sodium, which is great, 23 grams of fat and about 8.6 grams of saturated fat. that's where we were with traditional beef >> okay, regular beef. >> then we move over to impossible and that's coming in at about 240 calories, so you're saving around 40 then it's got 14 grams of fat, which is you're saving there it's got about the same saturated fat. and a little bit more sodium.
8:38 am
>> okay. how about the beyond meat burger i have actually had these on a number of occasions. >> it's like impossible coming in around 250 calories, a little higher when it comes to sodium but fat is much less fat and a lot less saturated fat 6 grams of saturated fat is great because we should get 20 grams a date. >> on a day are meatless burgers healthier than traditional >> they're not necessarily healthier because manufacturers are trying very hard to give you a plant-based meat alternative, they wanted to so it's going to have similar saturated fats, sodium and calories however, it's better for you, two important distinctions, it's better for you for eating less red meat because we eat about 2 1/2 burgers worth of red meat a day, five times more than we
8:39 am
should beyond that, it's much better for the planet it's much more sustainable if you're thinking about the environment and you're trying to eat less red meat -- >> the report out this morning that speaks to that. >> no animals were harmed in the making of these products. >> it's not just these burgers, this meatless trend is everywhere sausages -- >> it's exploding and their mastering the taste. >> what are these? >> these are sausage based varieties. beyond meat, beyond sausage, which is terrific. this is litelife sausage, plant-based, both have half the total fat. >> that tastes like sausage. >> it really is amazing. wait until you try this other one too. they're both lower in calories and it looks, it sizzles and satisfies like normal sausage. >> these i would assume are healthier than traditional sausage. >> nutritionally they are better overall. overall. and lightlife has been doing this since 1979 and was well
8:40 am
ahead of the trend. >> what do we have here? >> so here now we have before the butcher, this is the breakfast sausage. what's great abohis one is it fits perfectly on an english muffin it's an award winner, and you're basically getting less sodium and double the protein this one over here is chorizo from abbott's butcher. it's basically developed in a kitchen, not in a lab, which is great. it's flavorful. >> these look like chicken nuggets. >> yes these are breaded plant-based nuggets. tyson owned and only nonvegan option here because it contains egg whites >> it tastes just like a chicken nugget. >> it's amazing. it does not taste like fake meat this one here is nuggs what's interesting is they'r constantly updating their formula so they keep making it a better and better chicken nugget
8:41 am
that's plant-based a year ago version 1.0 and now 1.3.1, which is a year later >> now what is this? >> this is good catch tuna. >> fake fish >> what's that >> this is fake fish and it's safe for shellfish allergies. so what you're getting here is a lot of the omega 3 fatty acids you would not necessarily get if you didn't like fish or were allergic to it in this good catch tuna. >> did you try it? >> i tried it. it's great. >> i'm not a tuna guy. i will taste it but i'm not -- in terms of health, is this just as good? >> nutritionally it's really great because you get the omega 3s. >> i'm not a tuna guy but if you're into that thank you. we always learn something when you're here. >> absolutely. >> to learn more about these meatless meat options and where you can find them, today.com/foods.

8:45 am
>> the number one question i'm asked on social media is how to store it at home and keep it organized. i love these boxes they're under $40 and you can keep everything organized in your day to day, can be on top and hoops in one and rings in one spot. >> i like how you have cute -- like a handkerchief or scarf or something. >> you can use a scarf, anything you have at home if you don't want to use that, old dish towel is a great hack, cut it up. and these are fantastic, they guide you and have lines. >> and they're not slipping and sliding around. >> and you can choose not to put them in but i love having that and you can use an old t-shirt even and they're super simple. >> get these at container stores >> yes, container stores, anywhere keep these organized and easy to access. >> i like that it's clear so you can see it >> they fit anywhere in the closet, anywhere.
8:46 am
they're great to have. >> next to cleaning jewelry, you have dos and don'ts. what are your dos? >> first is prevention put your jewelry on last >> before moisturizers and everything. >> you don't realize you're spraying your hair spray and perfume and it leaves marks and ruins the plating. if you do forget to do it, make sure you wipe the jewelry off after. >> use a tissue. >> yes, never a paper towel. it scratches jewelry and you can use dish towel or t-shirt and wipe it down with them. super easy >> what about jewelry cleaners >> i don't like jewelry cleaners but you have to be careful with certain stones and pearls. i like to not use cleaner. i think a soft cloth is best always at the end of the day take off your jewelry and wipe it off you don't realize during the day you're sweating and oil gets on and you put it away at night and it's sitting on your jewelry all night long. >> it loses its shine. >> prevention is key wipe it off at the end of the day. >> let's say we're traveling i'm guilty, i will throw my
8:47 am
stuff in one bag and try to untangle it later. what do you recommend? >> i love making sure my jewelry has a home when you're traveling it's great to have for long necklaces and instead of throwing them in your ziploc bag into a tangled mess, i love to take a scarf, roll up the chains. >> you can put more than one chain in there >> i do. you can put up to three. tie a knot and you pop it in your bag. >> looks cute too. >> it does look cute but better yet, i make sure my jewelry has a home these are fantastic, reusable. keep your hoops separate. >> if you keep your hoops next to others, it might scratch it up. >> yes, keep it separate you want your jewelry to have a home you put it in your bag and your carry-on and you have to gate-check your bag and you can easily access it, grab it, plop it in your tote bag. >> all of these would work for
8:48 am
earrings, whatever. >> if you don't want to buy something you probably have something at home. vitamin case, even pencil case i wrap a tissue and put it right inside. >> and necklaces and bracelets >> yes, i keep this in my bag every day to make sure the jewelry always has a home. that is my best tip. make sure it always has a home >> this is my favorite thing you're known for your stacking. >> okay, summer, we have a lot of new spritzes and corks around i love to save corks and cut them into rounds in little squares, keep some with your travel box, wherever you want to, keep some in your jewelry box and they're an amazing earring back if you drop it. >> oh, if you lose your earring back >> and it works for the night. >> i'm always putting on my earrings and dropping the back on the ground and i can't find it. >> i always have a wine cork on hand that is a good tip now, how to stack. i wish i was as cool as you. give me rules how to stack up a bunch of rings.
8:49 am
>> there's no rules, that's the thing. we all have an heirloom ring that's important we want to wear at night and want it to look like a little more there's no rule. stack that looks like one big ring. mixed metals, mixed metals are awesome. >> i've seen you do it on multiple fingers. >> i do. but now i'm picking one hand and picking a finger if you're wearing hoop earrings, don't wear a necklace. >> okay. >> i think it's great you want do wear your wedding band out and make a statement ring, that could be fun, costume rings, stack it up and you have a statement ring instantly. >> i love it it looks so good jennifer, thank you very much. >> thank you for having me. >> we have more on how to care for your jewelry today.com/style. back out to craig. >> thank you, savannah we're taking "steals and deals" to the plaza. jill martin will revea fabulous finds under $40, is that right >> under $40 and you're fab over
