i didn't know how to react, reports in the news. >> right now at 5:00, a big scare at san jose state university. police say a man with a gun made his way on to campus, forcing some to shelter into place for hours. how a few terrifying moments turned into a long night for students. plus the fashion protection, one bay area woman turning to a popular fashion item and turning it into an unusual safety tactic to keep students safe at school. she says her sales are soaring. and firefighters spring into action after a fire starts near an east bay religious center, what may have sparked that. the news at 5:00 continues right now. good morning to you. thanks for joining us on this

friday. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm kris sanchez. laura and marcus have the week off. they'll be back next week. meteorologist kari hall has our forecast. >> in fog in san francisco because the clouds are higher as we watch some rain off the coast. if you're planning to head to outside lands today it's going to be perfect. those temperatures reaching the upper 60s and sunshine, really doesn't get any better than that with our south bay temperatures reaching 81. no extreme heat in the near forecast. we expect a spike in temperatures midweek. it's friday at the bay bridge. >> we're talking about the light early friday commute. no problems right now. a busy weekend with outside lands. we'll see more traffic, pete will talk about that. you're at speed through the maze and contra costa county, the early drive for highway 4, no slowing out of antioch,

brentwood, discovery bay. mild slowing after they picked up most of the cones at the altamont pass. south bay, peninsula, easy drive at speed. back to you. >> thank you, mike. panic on the san jose state campus, as a man with a gun triggers a lengthy lockdown. >> that suspect is now in custody. no shots were fired but a lot of students were feeling very terrified and that's understandable. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in san jose where he's learning more about this suspect and the investigation into how they came to find him, bob. >> that three-hour-long standdown lockdown is over, they found the man with the gun but caused quite a scare here on campus here in san jose. this started yesterday evening. police say the man was spotted two blocks way from san jose state and ran on to campus into the spartan complex here at sjsu, a building full of classrooms, offices and a gym.

dozens of officers responded. three female students inside the complex, two evacuated quickly and another locked herself in a closet until police found her on the first floor. another student was in a neighboring building and described a frightening experience. >> so we pushed the tables against the door and then we all kind of sat up against the wall and there's people who were shaken up and you could hear people crying. >> reporter: how did police find this man? a k-9 team swept the complex, found the suspect in a vent on the third floor. he was arrested, taken away by ambulance. no shots were ever fired. the gun police believe he was carrying was found shortly after the arrest across the street from the university. the man's name has not been released but reportedly is he from san jose. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. president trump says a vote on a new background check for

gun sales would be a good idea, but we do not expect that senate majority leader mitch mcconnell will bring back lawmakers from summer break to address that. in the meantime the nra is definitely talking to president trump. "today in the bay's" tracie potts live on capitol hill with what the gun lobby is saying about those background checks. good morning >> good morning, scott, talking about you not liking what they're hearing from the president or congress. mitch mcconnell not married to the idea of ending summer break early but seems to be opening the door to talk about new gun laws. moms demand action headed to kentucky demanding senate majority leader mitch mcconnell schedule a vote on expanded background checks. >> they want mitch mcconnell to take this up, pass it and have president trump sign it. we're not going to stand for anything less. >> reporter: 200 mayors urging congress to come back early and vote. >> something needs to be done. >> the one thing that's off the

table for me is doing nothing. >> reporter: mcconnell is asking lawmakers to start informal talks this month, so they're ready to vote in september. >> we are hopefully by the time we get back, have aired some of the differences and see what we can actually turn into a law instead of finger pointing. >> caller: mb connell says they'll allow police to seize guns if the judge says the owner is a threat. >> i don't want to put guns into the hands of mentally unstable people. >> reporter: the national rifle association reportedly warned president trump that supporting gun laws could cost him voters. in a statement, the nra says the proposals being discussed by many would not have prevented the horrific tragedies in el paso and dayton. but we do know that senate leader mitch mcconnell is really sort of opening the door to talk about a lot of different things, not only background checks and red flag laws but he even says

there may be some discussion when they get back of an assault weapons ban. we haven't had one in this country in 15 years. back to you. that is some extraordinary moves, tracie, thank you. with the new school year fast approaching, there say troubling anxiety that some parents are having and students as well especially after the recent mass shootings. one east palo alto entrepreneur has seen an uptick in orders for her bullet proof hoodies, called wonder hoodies and the woman who created them says she did that after a recent neighborhood shooting. she wanted to keep her family members safe. >> i think people are looking for an option to feel safe or like to move on from these events and i guess mine is one option. >> the hoodies aren't the only bullet proof items for sale. sales are also up for bullet proof backpacks and ever since last weekend's shootings the maker of a product called puffy pack says her sales have

doubled. if you have school aged children, this might not come as a shock, but back to school costs keep getting higher as parents across the u.s. are expected to spend about 30% more than last year. >> nationally back to school shopping expected to rake in more than $27 billion according to the accounting firm deloitte. in the bay area average household spending rising 2% to $611, nationally it's $519. more than half will shop in stores, 30% online. interesting note, online back to school shopping dropped slightly from last year. new overnight in the east bay, firefighters making short work of a fire that burned near a jewish community center. the fire broke out near the habaad center for jewish life on hopyard road in pleasanton. it doesn't appear to be suspicious, it could have been started from smoldering coals from a grill. happening today, south bay law enforcement talk about new

hope will cure a car break-in epidemic. santa clara police say the number of break-ins this year is more than double. you can blame it on some technology thieves using bluetooth sensors to pinpoint when and where valuable devices might be locked in the car or trunk. it's not enough to hide them. south bay assembly member chu secured nearly $4 million in new funding to combat the car break-ins and will attend the news conference later today, so will we. good news for commuters, bus service rolls back into san francisco's reopened trance bay tran trans bay transit sunday. the facility was shut down shortly after the grand opening last year because of cracks found in two support beams. those beams have been fixed. the center reopened a few weeks ago but buses were stig ll bein diverted to a temporary location. facebook users in illinois can move forward with a class lawsuit, class action lawsuit,

they're concerned about facebook's use of facial recognition technology. here at home, a san francisco appeals court ruled users can sue facebook over privacy rights enfringements. cording to the aclu this is the first appeals court decision to directly address privacy concerns posed by facial recognition technology. san francisco and oakland already ban the use of facial recognition software by the cities themselves. one of the biggest celestial shows of the year coming to the skies above. the perseid meteor shower. there may be an unexpected party pooper, the moon peaks on monday night, astronomers predict about 20 shooting stars an hour. if you're in the right spot it should be all shooting stars, however you got a full moon so the light could wash out some of the action. kari, when the kids were little we used to lay on the driveway at night, like a sleepover on the driveway. >> awesome. >> when i was in yosemite, i

looked up, i had no idea that there were this many stars in the sky. >> you have to get away from the bay area for theos part. here is a look right now as we get ready to head out the door in san jose, and we have a few clouds rolling by as a system sits just off the coast and that could bring in some rain. we have some spotty, light showers but i think a lot of it will evaporate before it hits the ground. we're not expecting this to measure up to much, but it will bring in a couple of sprinkles to parts of the north bay and we'll see the fog returning to the coast in san francisco right at about 5:00 to 6:00 this evening, and then as we go into tomorrow morning, there will be another wave of some slightly wetter weather that will be near the coast that could produce some drizzle, but once again, not expecting much measurement out of this. don't cancel any weekend plans even though we're seeing rain. mike you're seeing a blip on the speed sensors. >> don't cancel the commute. 880. crews are starting to clear from the one or two lanes they've had cleared for the area, that construction southbound down toward marina is completely cleared from the report. last few minutes just showed that slowdown, takes a little while for the sensors to catch up but nothing to catch up with as far as your drive. you're at speed pretty much all over the bay, just mild slowing out of the altamont and no problems here on the peninsula, an easy drive, 101 past the bright sign there at university, just south of that off-ramp and we are again looking at just a mild slowdown out of the altamont pass. right here 84 shows a dramatic slowdown over the last few minutes that means that folks are tapping their brakes as they come down through vallecitos, isabel and that's typical. back to you. coming up, the search is still on for an escaped inmate. police consider him extremely dangerous, and he might be armed. what investigators are offering now, if someone turns him in. plus one of my favorite phrases, i am bernie.

enjoy it. we're also enjoying some cooler temperatures, right now as you head out dublin, you can roll the windows down or maybe even if you're still at home, of course you are, we're going to be able to leave the air conditioning off today. our seven-day forecast is already up at the bottom of the screen and it's going to heat up there, as we go into early next week. if you're stepping out the door soon, headed out to dublin b.a.r.t. station, expect more clouds, upper 50s. this is the start we've seen throughout the week and then leading into the mid-70s as the skies gradually clear later this morning. our high temperature in livermore just slightly warmer than it was yesterday, reaching 83 degrees. concord up to 84 and 81 today in napa. oakland reaching 74 degrees, half moon bay at 65 for the high, but we've also seen some rain just off the coast that could lead to some sprinkles in parts of the north bay, we're not expecting a lot out of this and it will bring in more clouds and as we go into the afternoon, once again our skies clear, the fog returns to the coast, in san

francisco it stays cool, and breezy at times, drizzling, and that's where we can expect early tomorrow morning as we see this unusual system that could bring us a few trace amounts of rain in the north bay. this is the radar right now showing some rain across the mendino astline and if you're planning to head out this evening, it's going to be all clear, in redwood city we'll have the nbc bay area treat truck out there, get some free ice cream, enjoy some music on the square. it's going to, we're going to see temperatures in the lower 70s and then tomorrow for the 49ers game, partly cloudy, breezy, and in the upper 70s. we have some great weather for the weekend, with more clouds, but sunday will be hotter, reaching the low 90s and it's going to be a hot start to the week, but luckily that doesn't last long. it cools off by next wednesday and mike, you spotted something on the san mateo bridge. >> i did, but not on the chp report, on our live camera right here. you see look i'm going to circle that with my hand flashing lights, over the service area

just off to the right side as folks are traveling west to the peninsula. this is not blocking any lanes and everybody appears to be going by just fine. that person hopefully staying with their car, not getting out and standing there being an issue as far as risk for traffic there. service lanes should be serviced by the folks on the bridge. we'll check on that in the next few minutes and right around here no problem, nothing unusual for the speed sensors around the bay. a great easy friday start. approaching the bay bridge, contra costa county across to the north bay, all moving smoothly at speed or close to speed. here is the bay bridge toll plaza, this is what we typically see on an early friday commute. 5:21 no backup, no delays, not even a build for the cash lanes that will happen in the later morning and kick in for the afternoon and evenings, special events, kari talked about sporting events on saturday, b.a.r.t. added longer trains, parade for the filipino cultural festival parade saturday as well as games for the niners, the raiders and the giants. remember also for the niners,

new details now in the search for an escaped inmate in tennessee. authorities are now offering more than $50,000 in reward money for his capture. >> 44-year-old curtis watson escaped west tennessee state prison wednesday. authorities believe he killed a prison administrator during his getaway. the victim was found in her home across the street from the prison. watson had previous convictions including assault, child abuse, rape and kidnapping. he is believed to be armed. today marks the fifth anniversary of the shooting death of michael brown. his shooting smashed the

national black lives matter movement. the ferguson teen was shot by a police officer after the officer said that brown came at him menacingly. the officer says the teen attacked and tried to grab his gun, and that he, the officer, feared for his life. a grand juryecided not to indict that officer. he was reassigned after that shooting though. brown's father is requesting for his son's case to be reopened. members of the san francisco asian-american community looking into arming themselves. they say police are not protecting them, pointing to several recent assaults and robberies of asian-americans. wendy wong and others believe criminals are targeting their community, she's organizing a gun education class with an instructor. >> the communities are very panicking. they want to build up their confidence. >> a county supervisor is asking the police department for data about crime victims to find out if their suspicions are right and the asian-american community is being specifically

there and kari says there's a very good reason why. wel tell you what you can expect in your forecast in just a minute. thanks for joining us on this friday morning. i'm kris sanchez. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. laura and marcus had the week off. they'll be back monday. kari is here with the forecast. good morning. >> we know it's august. we call it fogust. we normally see fog near the coast but we're seeing a little bit more unusual right now, but as we get ready to head out for the day, nothing to worry about, if you're going outside lands, we have highs in the mid-60s and our skies will gradually clear today with our high temperatures reaching into the low 80s in the tri-valley. also low 80s in much of the north bay, oakland today up to 68 degrees. san francisco 68 there and oakland will be up to 74. i'm also tracking some spotty rain that will be moving into parts of the north bay and that will keep it cooler as well as we see more clouds. i'll talk more about that and the weekend forecast. mike, you're tracking a new crash on highway 101.

>> that's right, and 101 i know is a long stretch, all the way from as far south as we monitor past our northernmost viewing area. we're talking about san francisco. you saw all the green sensors around the bay here, this is where things slow down, south 101 headed past cesar chavez, 280 connector reports of a crash in the middle of the freeway. they may have to run a traffic break, chp may have to run a traffic break to quickly remove that car if they can't get it to the shoulder otherwise. we'll track that getting out of san francisco, and that's not affecting the bay bridge coming in. in fact not a lot affecting the bay bridge. we didn't lead with that because it's friday. the traffic very light here that will build up but the freeways are moving smoothly now. you guys have another issue though in san francisco. >> we do, and it is new this morning, it's video coming in of a reported shooting in san francisco's fillmore district. the scene is near turk and divasdero. you see officers looking for evidence. there are crime scene markers

out there as well. at this point, police are not confirming anything for us about this incident, but our crew did talk with witnesses at the scene who say as many as two people may have been injured. we're still working to confirm that with police. back in february we did report on another shooting right around the same place. it will be a busy weekend for san francisco police following a series of mass shootings across the country and gilroy, police in san francisco are ready to protect the city's biggest annual music festival. >> it is a huge one. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live at golden gate bridge as the gates to outside lands are set to open in a few hours. usually we talk about all of the artists that will show up. this team, pete, the conversation is a little different. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you guys, because we expect to see these large crowds which you typically see all the time here for the outside lands music festival, but of course in light of the recent events, security will be a top priority for the next three days. we have some details on what the

security will be like. we can go over that for our viewers who are attending the festival. there will be more police, fencing and security here at outside lands over the next few days and we know that an evacuation plan is also in place but sfpd did not go into great detail as far as how that will look. sfpd will have s.w.a.t. officers in place to join event security which we typically see here at the festival and also they pointed out perimeter security will be a high priority as a result of some of these recent shootings that we've seen, and here is sfpd police chief bill scott going into a bit more detail on that perimeter security. >> we're enhancing that this year, want to make sure our perimeter is tight and nobody is breaching that perimeter fence line. it's going to be double fence line. >> reporter: a number of high profile artists will be performing this weekend, including childish gambino and paul simon and there will be

more bus service going into this event but festival gates open at 11:00 a.m. we're live here in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay" >> thank you very much, pete. we also have new details on a panic in one missouri walmart, an armed man in full body armor walked in and terrified shoppers. >> this is an incident that played out yesterday in springfield. no shots were fired, and that man is now in custody, but police say the store manager pulled a fire alarm urging people to get out. when the armed man went out an emergency exit he was detained by an armed off-duty firefighter until police arrived but as you can imagine, there were moments of sheer panic for those shoppers. >> i thought this is real, this is crazy. before i had seen a rifle on him, it didn't look quite as big but when the police officer had it up in the air like so, it looked very terrifying. >> police now confirm that the man had loaded weapons with him

along with 100 rounds of ammunition. new details are emerging about the gunman that went on the shooting rampage at the gilroy garlic festival. >> documents we obtained from police reveal investigators found several disturbing items in the suspect's car, a shotgun and police say materials could be used to make a bomb including two pipes, a passport, banking documents, a set of california license plates, registered to a family member, a tent and wilderness training manual and several masks. police search of the gunman's home in gilroy discovered a semiautomatic rifle and ammo packed in that same bag. the gunman killed three people, injured at least 16 others, nearly two weeks ago at the festival. an update on a story we brought you earlier this week about a florida teenager claiming that his lung collapsed after using ecigarettes in particular vape pens made by san francisco-based juul. this morning the company is

responding. now the teen says that the toxic chemicals in juul pods cause the lung damage. he vaped one juul pod every two days. his story is going viral on social media, a lot of folks talking about it but juul tells us "while we do not have any details about this alleged incident we have robust safety monitoring systems in place and will vigilantly monditor for an evidence of safety ish issues as we continue to combat youth usage." families near clear lake have been forced from their homes as another fire continues to burn. clear lake has seen its fair share of wildfires over the years. the latest fire has been burning since yesterday afternoon, they're calling it the golf fire because it's near buckingham country club. at last check 19 acres burned, it's 30% contained. cal fire on the scene of course. the biggest challenge it's in steep terrain and thick, dry brush. we are still talking with investigators about this

breaking news story we brought you all morning yesterday on "today in the bay," that fiery south bay crash that shut down lanes of 101 in south san jose for hours. we are still waiting to find out exactly where those cars caught fire. four vehicles were torched in the accident. one person died, two others injured and a man we talked with made it out of the crash alive. the crash crippled the thursday morning commute along 101 near the 85 interchange. new this morning, expanded health care options in east contra costa county. the jon muir health outpatient center in brentwood is undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation project. a major renovation will include a larger urgent care center. this morning the "east bay times" is reporting work inside the facility at balfour road and john muir parkway should finish by 2021. the $25 million project is expected to create 25 jobs, add more doctors on staff and hopefully expand other services. so things are suddenly

looking a little rosier for the giants, thanks in part to mad bum. >> the giants have been in a slight tailspin since the calendar turned to august. having one of the game's best pitchers is going to help. madison bumgarner pitched seven shutout innings and reached base three times as well. mike yastrzemski looked like his grandfather, carl, as the giants beat the fillies 5-0. niners fans have to wait too to see their top defensive end in action. nick bosa sprained his ankle. we just got this guy! he's out for the whole preseason. he was the second overall pick in the draft. it's not clear if he'll be ready to go when the games go for a month from now. the niners open tomorrow against the cowboys at levi's. south bay shores will take

at 7:15. we'll be at about 64 degrees, a cool evening with some breezy winds and more clouds moving by. as we check out our saturday forecast, it still looks good with inland areas reaching the mid 80s. if you're going to the raiders game, it's going to be in the low 70s, just a few clouds passing by, and breezy winds at times at kickoff, will be at 73 degrees. on sunday, that's when it starts to heat up, with the valleys up to about 92 degrees. the bay at 84, and the coast at 71 degrees and that's also when we have the japanese summer festival happening in concord. we expect those high temperatures to reach about 90 degrees, so stay hydrated, and find some shade when you can. if you're going to be in the tri-valley, it's also going to be warming up there throughout the weekend, so look at today we're up to about 80 degrees and then up to 90 on sunday and if you're planning to head out of town to the sierra, a live look at squaw valley as the sun rises this morning, that's where you find the cooler temperatures.

is calling on the palo alto community to recognize that this is a problem and to address it. >> palo alto police are not commenting on the case because it is ongoing litigation, but the nbc bay area investigative unit confirms that the santa clara county district attorney's office opened a criminal inquiry into the officer's conduct. new details now and a group of suspected armed robbers are in custody after police say they broke into a contra costa county home and then led police on a high-speed chase. antioch police rushed to a home on gold pine way wednesday night. the victims say three men with guns forced their way into their home, brentwood police tried to stop the suspect vehicle, the suspect led police on a chase. three people were arrested on the spot. another suspect was found nearby in a field. the next story is getting a lot of buzz on social media this morning, danny trejo is known as a tough guy on screen but the actor proved he is all heart after a crash in southern california.

that is the scene there, it happened wednesday afternoon. the actor known as machete in one of his roles said there was a driver ran a red light, smashed into another car, the car overturned and then he heard a baby inside, there was a grandma calling for help. he crawled in, with the help of a little girl, released that baby from the car seat and got him to safety. >> when i reached in, i couldn't reach it and this little girl, she was, she says i got it, i got it, and i pulled the baby out. thank god. >> l.a. fire department says three people were taken to the hospital, but no one was seriously hurt. trejo gave interviews to police officers and has a message to all drivers and that is to pay attention when you're behind the wheel. >> it's 5:48. let's stay in southern california. this is a hot and spicy getaway in palm springs. it's the taco bell hotel. now they're calling it the bell. taco bell hotel and resort. >> look at the little pillows. >> i know, right?

in santa rosa today we're up to 80. san francisco 68 and 80 in palo alto. 81 today in san jose, but this is the rain i was talking about, as it moves closer to the coast, a lot of it fizzles out but we can see there are some showers up around the mendocino coastline and we could possibly see some of that rain moving into the north bay. i think a lot of it will evaporate before hitting the ground but will make for some interesting cloud cover, and then into the afternoon we see skies clearing, but the fog rolls closer to the coast. by tomorrow morning we see a second wave of spotty showers that will clear out quickly throughout the day. if you're planning to go to the 49ers game tomorrow, it is going to be perfect, upper 70s, breezy at times, and a few clouds rolling by, and also we know the san jose jazz festival starts today, tomorrow. we have the beautiful weather, upper 70s throughout the afternoon, and so some of our inland areas will reach into the low 80s. we'll see temperatures spiking on sunday, and it will be hot
