good morning, everyone. you are waking up to a live look at san jose and we are just outside of the summer jazzfest and day two of the festival and we are joined here with vianey arana, and we are looking a little cloudy there, but hopefully it is not how it is going to stay. i don't know, you tell us. >> well, it is foggy in san

francisco and our temperatures are going to be comfortable once that cloud cover clears, but we have a nearby system that we have been talking about. this is the radar from a couple of hours ago and you can see the lightning strikes between california and oregon and near reading where we saw a number of lightning strike, and we are seeing the rain through medford and eureka and north bay and we could expect to see the showers and a slight chance of seeing the possible body showers into san francisco right now. you can see it is cloudy and foggy and i won't rule out the chance of seeing the spotty showers, because the gss and the euro models are showing the possibility of it creeping in around 8:00 a.m. and now looking downtown of san jose, and the sun is struggling to peak up, but once it does, the temperatures will warm up. by 2 sclk, we will be climbing into the low 80s and it is not going to be extremely hot. we will get a combination of the sun and clouds and sort of going to keep us comfortable in

through the afternoon and then if you are going to be in san francisco, the system will stay longer, and a chance of seeing the spotty showers, and i will go more into detail in a little bet. >> but the sun is coming out this afternoon? yes, it will. >> okay. thank you we will begin this morning with breaking news that accused sex offender jeffrey epstein took his life inside of a manhattan jail, and that is according to three officials familiar with the matter. he hanged himself. he is accused of paying some as young as 14 years old hundreds of dollars of cash for having sex at his townhouse in palm beach, florida. he had pleaded not guilty. epstein was 66. we have a followup to breaking news that we first brought you last night at 11:00, when the walmart in milpitas got the all-clear when the entire

store was evacuated. the bomb squad was called in around 4:00 p.m., and the sheriff's deputies and bomb sniffing dog checked tout area, and determined that the device was probably just fireworks. in another top story, scary moments in san jose when a burglar made his way into the house when the owners were still home. the couple did not realize they had been burglarized until they notice the home video and then realized precious jewelry was missing. the husband was in the driveway and the wife was in the shower and the burglar took what he wanted. we have this report. >> reporter: this man starts by putting on a sweater, but it is not his. it belongs to joanna hildalgo and this is her parent's house. >> nobody was injured, but it is the idea of somebody coming while they are in the house. >> reporter: this happened 10:00 wednesday morning when ed cruz and his wife are the only two

home. ed was outside helping to clear his neighbor's driveway and the wife was in the shower. for eight minutes he was intruding around the house, and here he has a big box that is supposed to go in his bedroom. >> what was here? >> it is a jewelry box. >> reporter: what is more disturbing the wife was in the next door. >> the jewelry was physically three feet away from where she was taking a shower, and so he was right there. >> reporter: the cruzes are okay, but they are devastated by the loss of the jewelry. >> it was passed on from grandmother, so it a lot of sentimental value. >> reporter: and also, you can see him putting on the warriors' cap that they just got when they played at the oracle arena. nbc news. and after a complicated cliff rescue last night, the boy fell off of his bike and down a cliff, and his father climbed down to save him, and some firefighters were lowered down

the cliff to save the two. they put the boy on the backboard and then a boat to safety. a fast-moving brushfire in alameda county is contained after being dangerously close to home. the fire started after 2:00 p.m., and then quickly spread into livermore. the neighbors were told to get ready to evacuate, but it did not come to that, and the flames never reached the homes. >> smoke was visible from miles away, and burned 42 acres, so there is an air quality advisory out this evening, as the smoke is going to travel to different parts of the tri valley area. >> speaking to families in the neighborhood, they are thankful their homes were spared. om yesome eerie similaritie this warehouse fire that is similar to the ghost fire that

raider there at the gilroy shooting. in the east bay 100 people gathered for a respect for humanity rally. the goal was a safe place for the community members to come together to express fierce following the string of mass shootings. also musical artists and guest speakers. the gunman who killed 22 people in el paso said he targeted mexicans. he had admitted to driving from dallas to el paso where 80% of the population is hispanic. he admitted to going into the walmart with the ak-47 and shooting people. he has been charged withp capil murder and held without bail. prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty. be sure the stay, there because we have a lot more for you this morning. still ahead on "today in the bay." and we will tell you what a

remove her hijab. after a security check, an employee stopped her at the gate and asked for an i.d. check. >> at the gate, he said that you would have to take it off and i was confused at first, and he said that you have to take that off, and i said, oh, my scarf, and so she said i can't. and he removed her to a private room to remove the head scarf. >> i was separated from my teammates and i did not want to be late or have something go wrong, and i was like fine. >> reporter: after she arrived she contacted her family to tell them what happened. >> i don't want this to happen to anybody whether they are 12 or anybody, we don't want to see it happen again. >> and air canada apologized and said that although such checks are required by law, we will review this situation with the airport agent to make sure that better care is going to be

allow people to legally consume and buy marijuana. another thing is security. we have mn both of the changes. >> reporter: for 12 years outside lands has brought big crowds into golden gate park to enjoy food, drinks and music. >> it is a whole land of discovery. >> reporter: and this year, first time marijuana can be consumed in a designated area called grasslands. >> we are happy to be part of it and hopefully the beginning to more recreational sales of marijuana in major places. >> reporter: the director of the san francisco office of cannabis is hoping to make things safer. >> we wanted people to have a place to come apart from the rest of the event to essentially mitigate the impact that consumption of cannabis can have on other event attendees. >> reporter: and this year, more officers at the festival, and

more fencing, and tighter security in response to attacks in el paso, and dayton and gilroy. this group came from el paso days after a shooter killed 22 people in their city, and they came with a plan in case of the emergency. >> to stay close, and stay towards the exit, and stay with the group is a good idea. >> reporter: the shirts say el paso strong, and the message is that they won't let fear ruin their fun. >> it is no reason for us to be fearful and to give somebody that power to let us like live in fear. we won't give them that power. >> and that is ali wolf reporting, and it is not just outside lands, san francisco is also going to be stepping up security at the jazzfest. the doors opened up yesterday, and in the wake of the garlic festival shooting, the police chief says adding more officers and tightening up security. this year, the festival will have fewer entrances as well,

downtown san jose, and looking at the cloud cover, it is beautiful out there in san jose right now, and 68 degrees, and we have been talking about this summer rain. so what exactly are we tracking? let's get you back to the satellite radar and we have a low pressure system, and again this is pretty far north, and near the border of oregon and california and you will get the timing right here, and overnight, we saw several lightning strikes near redding, and that is what the camera was catching with the lightning strikes. we have showers through medford and eureka. the future cast right now, and a lot of the rain if you will notice, it has a little bit of the cell moving through san francisco, and probably not even make it into the ground. so we are not expecting a complete washout, but you might see some spotty showers mainly to the north bay with the chance of seeing the showers moving in through san francisco, and parts of the coast as well. now, the gfs and other models

are not showing too much rain, and even though this big cell may not allow the rain to hit the ground, we will keep an eye on it. inland areas will see the better clearing and once we get the sun to peek through, we will have a mix of the sun and clouds and the temperatures will be comfortably be in the 70s in cupertino, and upper 70s and lower 80s in san jose and down to gilroy at 83, and in through the east bay, we are talking about concord and surrounding areas at 84. san mateo is 75. if you are headed into san francisco, it is upper 60s. and again, we will keep a lot morph to cloud cover for you have to be in san francisco, and in through the coastline, but at least the temperatures will warm up. some might be a little muggy. sonoma is 79. and speaking of the outside events, outside lands festival,

businesses who work with the artists. we have the story of one well loved san francisco business that is now singing a pretty sad tune tune. >> reporter: san francisco's haight/ashbury music center has been a part of the music since since 1972 and it has been the haight ashbury music center that grew out of a small music store. 40 years ago, massoud was strolling down haight street when fate pulled him into the music world. >> i just was going down the street to look for a space to open up a used record store, and i saw alooking for the working partner. >> reporter: the sign was in a small music store with the help of a college professor, he ended up buying it. >> i had a vision to have a

>> reporter: this superintendent feels that i.c.e. is forcing parents to pull their kids from school. they saw a dropoff last year, and this fall, another 270 students will not be coming back. in a june survey, the parents told her that they are leaving the state. >> that is telling me that the families are moving north or up north somewhere or many of them back to the country of origin. >> reporter: that is a $300 million hit for the economically-challenged district. the east side district says they will have at least 250 fewer student, and san jose unified says they will see a drop. an emotional mother says she knows the pain firsthand.

she is also her niece's legal guardian after the child's father was deported by i.c.e. she says that she is seeing the fear in children's eyes every day, and fear that their parents just won't come home one day, and fear that on the first day of school, their best friend's desk will be empty. damian trujillo, nbc news. bay area police departments are getting a lot of money to help crack down on car break-ins. $750,000 each to freemont, milpitas, and york, and san jose police. the officers say that the money will be invested in a number of ways like buying new cameras and improving the communication between the department, but police say that the best way to prevent the car break-ins is to keep the valuables out of sight. >> i kept my guitar in the car, and not visible and he broke in

jeremy jones was with his canine partner raider there at the gilroy shooting. and now, congress is facing intense pressure to take action after the recent shootings. the president wants renewed background checks, but there are questions about what can be passed on capitol hill. >> reporter: president trump leaving for vacation says he has spoken to the congress about meaningful background checks. >> add that word meaningful so that sick and demented people are not carrying guns. >> reporter: but he is not talking about universal background checks opposed by the nra. and while they say that mitch mcconnell is on board, neither the president or mcconnell have offered specifics, but the democrats have, and two bills are sitting on his desk.

more kennels without the extra work. >> and what is that looking for a commitment? >> two weeks to a month, and it is mostly the big dogs right now, and we have fosters for the kittens and the cats and the puppies, and the big dog fosters are what we are in need of right now. >> and that could lead to someone adopting as well? >> yes. we do everything, getting them spay and neutered and microchipped and we just need somebody to take them home for a while. >> and come home for a little bit and then become a foster failure. and they come in to help foster the big dogs. >> that is going to help? >> yes, the larger dogs are harder to place, and they are the most euthanized. thank you, and i was hoping for a dog from jacob, but people will have to adopt. so to find out more about pets
