southbound at andrade. this is causing them to close that exit from 680. that's a factor in your commute. look at all the dry grass in the area throughout the hills and the trivalley. we have a number of fire crews scrambled out to the area. more are arriving now. it looks like they have closed one lane of southbound 680 causing a backup coming out of pleasanton and send ole. two hot spots in this shot. chp heard about three spots with fires. there may be more or they are actively putting them out as we speak. the live shot shows you two lanes blocked approaching andrade road from south 680. no injuries reported, no crashes. a big distraction during the commute.

with the dry roadways out there there is always a concern -- not the roadways, the dry grass alongside the roadways there is a big misdemeanor the good news is we don't have a lot of wind. but we do have very dry conditions. starting out with clear skies. getting ready for cooler temperatures to start. then we will see the temperatures starting to warm up as we head throughout the day. we are going to see our highs in the area of that fire reach into the low 90s while the south bay reaches the upper 80s. we will talk more about that in a few minutes. we will also have a look at when our temperatures spike coming up next. sounds good. we are monitoring the fire burning at southbound 680 near andrade road in the sunol grade. firefighters are on hand. it look like a big fire from these pictures because we are zoomed up to it.

et cetera not large. hopefully they can keep it under control. but it is a distraction. mike will keep tabs on it and we will check in with him. a ride share driver is suspected of driving a bay area woman 60 miles away and sexually assaulting her. this morning bob riddel has lyft's response. he was a driver for lyft. are they saying anything. >> reporter: they say they are cooperating with authorities and has blocked the suspect for ever driving for them again. the suspect, the driver in question, take a look at his photo, a 46-year-old man who was arrested on saturday who is still in the san mateo county jail awaiting his first court appearance which could be later today or tomorrow. law enforcement says he was working for lyft when he picked up a 25-year-old woman early sunday morning after she became

intoxicated. instead of bringing her home he allegedly took the women an hour away to his home in tracy and raped her. he also face as charge of false imprisonment. his neighbors in tracy say they have never seen police activity at his home and don't know much about the man who has lived next door since 2017. lyft tells nbc bay area it adheres to strict criminal background checks on all drivers before hiring and updates that information daily. in a written statement, the company wrote, safety is fundamental to lyft. what is being described is terrifying. and the driver's access to lyft has been permanently removed. we responded immediately and have reached out to the rider since the incident. we are working with authorities and will continue to help in every way week. 603 right now. there are a lot of questions about the death of jeffrey epstein. he is the man accused of child sex trafficking and considered a disgraced financier who hob knobbed with world leaders.

outages there. such dry conditions out there on the sunol grade. we see it every time this year how dry it is. it is always so concerning because you don't want the flames to leap at all. >> sky ranger widened out and we saw all the dry grass. a couple of spots caught fire. they jumped on that right away. >> and there was not a lot of winds in the area. what about the morning commute. >> i want cary to talk about that also, because of the dry conditions there was a potential for that to be rather bad. >> it is going to be a hot day. the good news is we are starting out cool. we don't have a lot of wind and the humidity this morning is fairly high. we are seeing drifts of fog around the golden gate every now and then. right now it is mostly clear on this morning with a lot of people heading out the door. in the south bay, expect it to be right at 62 degrees. it will be a cool start. but those temperatures warm up

fast. 76 at 10:00, leading to upper 80s by early this afternoon. and we have kids heading back to school today in the trivalley. in pleasant ton unified school district, we will be at 60 degrees as they head out the door. as they head out for recess it will already start to warm up. throughout the afternoon we are reaching into the low 90s. cool to drop them off, but really hot as you pick them up later today as our temperatures reach 94 degrees. we will up to 93 in concord. and santa rosa today, 92 there. while san francisco stays in the mid 70s. here's what's going on. we have had a fairly mild weekend. now high pressure is building. we see the clockwise winds that go around high pressure is going to give us more of a northerly wind and at times blowing offshow. even though it heats up the i would in of the week it quickly backs off as a storm system moves into the pacific northwest

by the end of the week. friday, saturday, and sunday, feeling cooler winds and much cooler temperatures -- some breezy winds i should say. and for the middle of the week we are looking at dangerous heedth heat as the inland valleys peak at 98 degrees and come down to the low to mid 80s by the weekend. while san francisco for the next few days stays in the mid 70s. mike you are tracking the grassfire and the impact on traffic? >> yeah we will start with sky ranger, show you out here as they are looking at the hills through sunol and freemont. we are showing a smooth flow of traffic but a slower driver through the area right now. as laura just told you the traffic flow is improving because they cleared one more lane and put the fire out that was there. it was a roadside fire at call elevators and andrade road. the andrade road offramp was closed.

watch the area, big distraction, one and two lanes still closed. >> south 680 tends to slow down around bernal past stone ridge. it has built up over the last ten minutes. a tremendous amount of slowing compared to what we typically see on a month morning. 25 minutes for the five and a half mile stretch. adding 15 minutes onthe your drive. as we back it out, we notice 880 is moving slowly. you can still use the side streets and get through the area quicker than you can if you head over towards the nimitz. keep that in mind. thing may change. 680 is starting to improve a bit. 84 coming into the area out of livermore and pleasant ton, that's starting to back up as you hit the interchange. it will be a factor making that merge. the rest of the bay, south bay

sunol off of 680 and andrade. this is close to the top of the hour. flames were burning close to the highway. >> lets take you live there right now. the fire is out. crews remain on the scene. the charred vegetation that burn there had certainly causing backups and delays as people are looking there. bob riddel is live at the scene. let's go to him now. looks like they got it out. but they were looking for hot spots, bob? >> reporter: there were three spot fires along the southbound shoulder of 680 between call elevators and andrade. this is one of the fires here where the fire department, they do have all three fires out. they are still trying to determine the cause. they were initially talking about possibly something with a pg&e power line sparking or something along those lines or maybe a transformer blowing. but i asked the firefighter of this team, he says there is no

downed power lines, no indication of what might have caused it. they have a fire view a little bit south of here where they are going to check on a report of a dump truck leaning up against a power pole and see if that could be possibly the cause for the three spot fires. look to the right, livermore pleasanton fire department, handling this fire. they are cleaning you up right now. what you can't see is the commute traffic is -- well here look over to your right. this is the commute traffic, after they get through the backup. one lane, the slow lane, the far lane s shut down. you are going to have a backup coming from walnut creek dublin heading southbound on 680 because of this, again, three spot fires, grass fires on the shoulder, did not burn onto the road. just burned through some vegetation. crews are out trying to determine the cause. reporting live in sunol, bob riddel, today in the bay. >> thanks for getting out there so quickly, bob.

mike has been tracking how the fire is affecting the traffic out there. one lane is still close? >> with the lane closed it is going to slow the traffic. but the bigger thing is the distract with multiple fire crews and fire engines out there. this is southbound 680. on-ramps and 680 south seven or eight miles past andrade. once chp even shows up on a scene folks start to slow down for curiosity. there are fire crews. one lane blocked at call elevators, one lane blocked at andrade. there were three spot fires and a lot of smoke which is now starting to clear. this is after 84 joins with folks out of livermore and pleasanton you can almost more traffic through miles canyon. stick it out.

another quarter mile and you should be in the leer for south 680. that will prevent a ripple over there. 880 can be used as an alternate but it doesn't save you any time. traffic flows smoothly through the rest of the bay. and the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights are on. >> the one thing that may help them get the wildfire, the grass fire under control so quickly is that we didn't have a lot of wind. looking at freemont, the flag is barely moving. as we start out, cool temperatures, that will lead into mid 80s. it will be a hot afternoon. i will talk more about that and the weekend forecast. it is 6:34, breaking news we are covering out of hong kong. all flights going out of the city's airport now canceled because of more protests. this is video from overnight showing thousands that are

long. we will show you video from earlier as the buss were arrives. it has been a long time coming getting to this point. remember it was back in september of last year when there were infrastructure issues that shut down the center. specifically fissures in the two level bus track. it took several months to finally reopen the transit center. it reopened this past june, but it was only the roof top park the grand hall and the food trucks outside. last month muni and golden gate transit resumed service on the lower level. this morning, ac resuming full service on the upper level. the bus deck opened yesterday. but today is the first day of full services. i spoke with riders getting off the bus this morning about the relaunch of service at the sales force transit center. >> it was annoying for all of us riders to be going to the temporary place.

it is a distraction in addition to blocking the right lane and the shoulder heading south through sunol in through freemont. we continue to follow this about 20-minute backup. i want to he show you the rest of the commute. 84 is also jammed because of that fire activity just south of where they merge. that's the worst commute of the bay for the trivalley there. everything else moves smoothly. the bay bridge toll plaza as the usual traffic. >> makes you want to -- >> think ahead to the weekend. >> you will be ready for the weekend by the time it gets here after a hot week. let's get a look at the numbers for the inland areas. we will see our temperatures peaking on wednesday. and then coming down to much more comfortable air by saturday and sunday with some low 80s. for san francisco, we will number the mid 70s through mid week. and then back to our normal upper 60s as the fog returns.

stories on today in the bay. >> want to show you live pictures from nbc bay area's sky ranger this morning. we have an update on the grass fire we have been following in alameda county. this is interstate 680 southbound at andrade in sunol the fire started over an hour ago. look what it led to. quite the backup on the sunol grade. the good news is that the fires are out. our reporter on the scene spoke with the fire captain. we are being told a dump truck in a quaurry on private property might have hit a power pole creating a surge sending sparks from these wires. this is what the fire locked like earlier. the fire captain as well also said they are not ruling out arson as the cause. power was knocked out to 3700 pg&e customers in the area. it won't be restored until about 10:00 this morning. deliberations in the ghostship warehouse fire trial
