we'll follow that, as well. back to you. developing right now, a wildfire developing in mend seasono county is sending people evacuating their homes. here red light latest numberes from cal fire. there are structured threatened. at last check, 85 acres have burned. cal fire says it's 85% contained. right now, we want to show you live pictures from east bay. some ofat sthke is moving from the bay area. that smoke is coming from the north of us. >> tt, there are more precau also today, there are more precautions takes playing.

>> we are going to conduct the power safety shutoff drills. that power will not be interrupted in the affected areas where these drills are taking place. going into the details of how these drills are going to work, pg&e will practice patrols to reduce the time it takes to turn the pier back on safely during a wildfire. today's drill will begin roughly around 8:00 a.m. covering the hills as well as parts of the castro valley. this will include brief helicopter work. these drills are timely when you consider the incoming heat this week, specifically in those inland parts of alameda counties. there will be elevated fire danger, but it's not quite a red flag warning, guys.

this drill will take place between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. the investigation into the death of jeffrey epstein is expanding. this morning, there's an intense focus on the federal facility where epstein was being held. craig has more on capitol hill this morning. >> good morning, everyone. the attorney general blasting the federal facility where epstein was found dead. members of congress are demanding answers, too. >> the federal jail in mshg where jeffrey epstein apparently handing himself saturday morning is enter intense scrutiny. >> we are now learning of serious irregularities at this facility that are deeply concerning. >> as the attorney general vow is to get to the bottom of his death, they are determining if

he was on suit watch. epstein's cell was not checked every 30 minutes as required. >> i think we're going to find that there's a series of inappropriate procedures followed that were a violation of their own policies. >> while the justice department and the fbi digs deeper, investigators raided epstein's private caribbean island. epstein is accused of trafficking girls as young as 14 for sex. >> they're asking for any additional victims to come forward. >> despite epstein's death, the case against any coconspirators and possibly his estate conditions. back to other other big story for you this morning, the death of a chp officer killed in the line of duty in southern california. this happened during a shoot-out on a freeway in riverside. we've tlaernd officer was andre moye.

he died after a suspect was pulled over and there was a shoot-out. moye was killed and two other officers hurt critically. dozens lined along the roadside to salute him. the tributes are pouring in from around the country and across the state, including from governor newsome. he will have more for us on officer moye's life coming up in the next half hour. the waiting game in the ghost shil trial drags into it's seventh day today. a jury must decide whether or not to charge them with man slaughter. the jury has more than a hundred exhibits and three months of testimony to go over.

his attorney says he's been mulging over what he did and did not say to the jury during the trial. they said the prosecution's closing testimony which included pictures of the victims left an impression on the jury. >> are there things i didn't do? yes, i didn't rise to the sensationalistic level that the prosecutor did. which is make an appeal to a motion which could back fire. >> the jury will be back to deliberate this morning. city officials in san jose are saying not to allow your pets to jump into lakes and ponds with blue green algae. warning signs are now posted along the lake in san jose. we spoke with one dog owner whose dog nearly died 40 years ago from the same problem. >> she was drinking water and we

week. markets looking for a place to stop. much lower again on a variety of concerns. hong kong is a mess. argentina and its debt are now a factor. as we have discussed before, the news tends to focus on equities, the stock mktsz. the yield on the government debt is fading. meanwhile, there is a lot more government debt. the budget deficit is $826 billion. up 27% from this time last year. what we owe is much more, around 22 trillion. candidate trump promised he would use his business skills to balance the budget. he said he guessed it would get done within two terms or eight years and start working on the deficit which, which he made that promise, was $4 trillion less than it is now.

alto. good morning, kids. it feels nice now, but by the end of the day, it will feel much warmer. our temperatures up to 90 degrees there. we will see a high of 84 in oakland. san jose, up to 93 degrees today. we will have milder air tonight. but even then, sitting out there in the sunshine is going to feel very warm. cooling off this evening into the mid 60s. we have high pressure. we will see some changes going into the weekend that high pressure backs off. we'll have some cooler and breezy conditions for the weekend and it's going to be just in time as we go from 100 degrees today peaking tomorrow up to 104 and mid 80s for the weekend.

today in the bay, consumer investigates helped a driver get back on the road. >> when lynn bought four two tires at costco, they came with a 50,000 mile road hazard warranty. about a year later, one tire went flat. she asked costco for warranty service. she said costco told her she needed four new tires already. lynn pointed to the warranty,

but says costco told her no, that wouldn't cover it. why? because her tires hadn't been rotated. lynn said they had been rotated and a dealer had done the rotation. she also said she had proof. but lynn said costco told her, no, no, the warranty require that's costco do the rotation. lynn paid a few hundred dollars for the new tires and called us. we checked the costco tire warranty. it says right here the purchaser must rotate and balance their tires as outlined by the vehicle manufacturer. we didn't find anything that states it has to been doe by costco. so we contacted the store. it gave lynn a $242 partial refund. costco told us it had been in contact with the member to resolve the issue. are you getting a run around with a company? call 888-996-tips. thanks so much, chris. it's 6:24 right now. there's some new movement this morning in the controversy over the george washington mural at san francisco high school.

this week, we told but the schoolboard president no proposing to cover it up with panels. now an a list actor and bay area native getting involved in that fight, danny glover part of a group fighting to protect the murals at george washington high school. the mural includes images of slaves as well as a dead native american. the schoolboard had voted to paint over the mural, but it's now set to consider the new panel proposal today. danny glover saying in part, as a washington high school graduate, i've spent my entire life fighting for freedom and the right of artistic expression. and i view the murals as they were for me, the reminder of the worers of human bondage and the mistreatment of native peoples. this is one of our favorite weeks of the year. nbc bay area and telemundo 48 work to go clear the shelter. this is our annual campaign to help pets find their forever home. >> and when viewers wanted a

for more coming in out of this area. maybe we're able to pace ourselves easier. we may have a crash west of 580 approaching the dublin sxwer change. so as laura and marcus showed you, there is a slower drive approaching the incident he change. back to you. now to the story making news across california. >> a deadly shoot-out on a southern california freeway in broad daylight. chp officer andre moye was killed and another officer was critically hurt. new overnight, a procession for officer moye who was the fifth officer to die in california this year. today in the bay's chris sanchez joins us with what we know about that officer and the gunman who killed him. >> both the officer and that suspect died in that shoot-out that looks really like a war zone. this is the fallen officer, offic

officerandre moye. officer mye was caught into what turned into a shoot-out with that suspect. chp and other law enforcement rushing to the scene. the suspect was in a white pickup truck on an interstate in riverside county when for some reason he pulled a rifle and started firing. but this also helped in the chaos. if you look at this picture here, these are sheriff deputies and law enforcement rushing 234 while the bullets were still flying to try to reach those two officers who were injured. one of them being loaded into a squad car and rushed to the hospital. officer mye was flown by helicopter and he later died at that hospital. a family member told nbc la that being a chp officer was all he ever wanted. >> loved it. that's all he kept talking about. i'm going to be a chp. i'm going to be at chp. and he did it. wonderful perpendicular. he had a good heart. he was so caring. the most passionate person. if you knew him, you would be like, wow. he was such a nice, good, kind

hearted person. he was so young. >> how chp motor as many cycles were lined up outside that hospital and they led a procession when officer moye's body was trchted. another chp officer was also injured, critical injuries, but he's expected to survive. the gunman was killed in shah shooting and his family told nbc la that they are in shock themselves, they're devastated and they're they're praying for this is officers. 6:34 right now. just into our news room this morning, pg&e announcing a new ceo and president. somebody tweeted out in the last few minutes that andrew versey will be taking over the utility. earlier this year, the ceo stepped down. versey has served in several roles at major energy companies.

his first day on the job is monday. until the meantime, victims of california wildfires ask for help from pg&e. a judge just approved a $105 million fund to help with relief efforts. it will help with the atlas, camp, nunns and tubs fires. soon, those people can go to pg&e's website and file for housing assistance and other immediate needs. layer today, the lives of three young people will be honored of those shot at the gilroy garlic festival. >> many schools are starting this week, but first, as you were mentioning, mind me in a few hours from now, the santa clara county board of supervisors are going to raise a flag at the government building in downtown san jose to honor trevor kirby. he was 25 years old. kayla salazar.

he was 13 years old. and, of course, steven romero, he was just 6 years old. a gunman shot and killed those three young people last month at the garlic festival in gilroy and, again, the county wants to honor them with the raising of the flag. that will be at 9:45 this morning. as damian was reporting last week, san jose police have come up with a new plan to respond to mass shootings, especially ones at schools. most of them, agency i mentioned, will be starting this week. under the new so-called guardian program, san jose police chief eddie garcia is adding new daily patrols who will be assigned to specific parts of san jose. so what's going to happen, the city is now divided into nine zones. each zone will consistent of two officers and a patrol car specifically assigned to active shooter scenarios in schools or other violent crimes on campus. >> ultimately, it's to engage the suspect.

freeway moving quickly past the coliseum. we do have a showdown that may be in store for you if you're heading in towards silicone valley. we'll check out highway 101, coming up . it's 6:44 right now. disturbing findings from the "l.a. times" this morning. the newspaper says sexual misconduct complaints for doctors is on the rise. there was a 62% jump from this fiscal year compared to the last. more than 11,000 complaints were filed with the california medical board. some experts say this jump coincides with the oakland "me too" movement. five officers are suing the city to keep their jobs. that lawsuit comes months after this body cam video was released showing what led up to the death of a homeless man found unconscious and armed last month. the investigation shows police shot him as he woke up. even after internal probes cleared the officer of

wrongdoing, the civilian police mmissi ignored the results and determined the officers used excessive force. >> they were investigated for over a year and exonerated by no less than six entities and then they are noticed that they lost their job. i think they're heading in the right direction, suing. >> the officers are currently on paid leave. the police commission has no xhint. > comment. hong kong international airport is at a stand still right now. this is new video of protesters demonstrating. all departing flights are canceled. yesterday, similar protests caused the cancellation of over 150 flights. protesters a ringry over a ruling that would allow extradition to mainland china. president trump has described the unrest in hong kong as riots. >> but china actually likes this choice of words. >> they did.

how did we know that? chinese government news cast said it out loud. here you go. >> u.s. president donald trump has described the protests in hong kong as riots and said this is an issue that china will deal with itself. a county koern ministry spokesperson welcomed these remarks by trump and the spokesperson reiterated that hong kong is part of china and any issues there are internal chinese affairs and no other countries should interfere with. >> protesters have made progress. the head of hong kong has withdrawn the extradition law but the protests continue and china is signaling this morning it's not going to put up with this much longer pulling out video of troops on the move. there's another problem for the white house after a statement from the acting director of citizenship and immigration ken kutenelli. the trump administration is firming up an already existing rule that would restrict

legal -- legal immigrants using government programs like food stamps from getting a green card or citizenship. it's been blasted by democrats. but the rules are not uncommon. canada wants to make sure you have your own health insurance before they grant you their version of the green card. an npr reporting asked this morning, what about that poem on the statue of liberty, the one that says give me your tired and give me your poor. here is his response. >> they certainly are. give me your tired, and your poor who can stand on your own two teet and who will not become a public charge. >> this poem says nothing about two feet. it does say your wretched refuse, i lift my lamp beside the door. but this is a poemette, it's not federal law. we're watching what's happening in hong kong as people push for this is rides and democracy. you can follow me on twitter.

happy first day of school, kids. it will be in the upper 50s and as we go throughout the day, it's going the heat up pretty fast. so make sure you write their name on the tag because if they're wearing a jacket this morning, they won't be wearing it later on today. it is going to be hot. in the tri valley, we're topping out at 98 degrees in livermore up to 100 in antioch and in concord. oakland today reaching 84 degrees and 96 in napa. san jose reaching 92 degrees. as we're starting out, we see cha that clear view over the south bay. as you're getting dressed this morning, wear something that will help keep you cool. some short sandals, a t-shirt and keeping a cool towel on your neck will help you out today. and even though we have some cooler temperatures in san francisco, at oracle park for the game this evening, it's still going to be pretty warm under all of that sunshine. not much of a win, but it feels nicer later on this evening and we are getting ready for some nicer weather. but it doesn't happen until this

weekend when high pressure starts to back off and it allows for some more gusty winds to pour in some cooler air from the pacific northwest. but once again, that happens this weekend. so we still have three or four more days of extreme heat. you can count friday with a high of 96, but we peak tomorrow up to 104 degrees. mike, you're closely tracking that south bay commute. >> that's right, kari, because we know we had that crash. the traffic alert in gilroy for north 101. we're now seeing that south bay build happen in part because folks are make their way throughout the south bay and in part because folks continue to speed in out of gilroy. we had a crash in the backup, the slow jan off of 152 and coming up into san martin. your typical pattern, then things speed up until you get into the rest of san jose. the rest of bay shows a smooth flow of traffic, the crash over on the shoulder near the dublin interchange out of lanes and getting towards the bay bridge
