"today in the bay" continues right now.'s friday. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. mike is going to get us through the morning with the commute in just a bit. first we want to talk about the hot temperatures that we're going to experience again today. >> i notice that it's all lit up in red. we're still in a microclimate weather alert because of the hot temperatures. we'll still see some triple-digits again today. a live look in dublin if you can make plans carpool or catch public transit on this spare the air alert day. dublin b.a.r.t. station comfortable with mid-60s but it will heat up fast today. 97llyt reaching the triple a cooler weekend, mike, you're tracking

that jam near the coliseum. >> near the numbers that sound like the temperature range you're talking about, 66 here, 98 toward the bottom of the screen and at 66, we still have your right two lanes blocked by a disabled vehicle, that's jamming up traffic, counter commute unusual from the bay bridge through downtown, things are fine, then you jam up past the coliseum for southbound 880. that is the issue right there on the nimitz. everything else moves nicely. your commute of course takes most folks to the bay bridge, more folks to the bay bridge. also north 680 sees slowing over the last half hour. northbound 680 mtague expressway your two right lanes are blocked by as well as basically a delivery of a larger rig with big large payload on the back and half your freeway is blocked. back to you. >> thanks so much. 6:01 right now. tens of thousands of people across the bay area woke up without power after losing it in the midst of the sweltering summer heat. the hardest hit was marin county. thom jensen joins us in our

newsroom. what is pg&aying about all of this? so hot, a lot of people as well. >> we heard from pg&e in the last hour, a company spokesman told "today in the bay" that they still don't know what caused this widespread outage. he says marin county alone had approximately 60,000 customers without power. power went out at about 11:00 last flight. it was restored by about 1:30 this morning with no electricity, people had to go without power on one of the hottest days on record and in some inland areas overnight, temperatures were still pretty hot. pg&e is still trying to figure out how many lost power across the bay area, and says there are still small pockets of outages in some spots. fortunately not as hot in marin county, where an estimated 60,000 customers as i said had no electricity. this is larkspur and you can see the entire downtown was still without power, just before midnight, despite the outage, some of the taverns remained open in the dark. >> power has been out about a

half hour now. >> reporter: did you see anything, hear anything? >> no, just instantly went out. there was no indication, nothing at all. >> power came on a half hour before closing time at 1:30. for now pg&e is trying to figure out how it happened and who exactly was affected. in the newsroom, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much, thom. 6:03. another fire scare overnight in southern santa clara county. we've got a live look along highway 101 in gilroy. you see just off of monterey street there. things are quiet now, but you see it went eight case a couple of hours ago. that is where a brush fire is now out, after starting overnight near the monterey exit, this is video from our photographer who passed that fire just after it happened, about 3:00 in the morning. crews were able to quickly put it out. a big heads up for people trying to get around the east bay this weekend, if you're using b.a.r.t. or driving along a particular stretch of contra costa county, you might hit some

delays. "today in the bay's" bob redell live in walnut creek to tell us why one project in particular is important enough to cause some of these problems for commuters. bob? >> reporter: marcus, yes. b.a.r.t. tracks are going to be shut down between walnut creek b.a.r.t. behind us and orinda for this weekend, so obviously they'll be having plans of traveling, this could impact your getting to and from. this is the first of six weekend tracks shut downs between the two stops, taking place on different weekends through october. this will include labor day weekend. county connection and ac transit will be providing free bus service between the stations during the weekend shutdowns to help those who rely on these stops touring these times so starting at 11:00 tonight, this is something if you're driving starting at 11:00 tonight and running through the weekend the two left lanes along highway 24 eastbound near the lafayette station and oak hill road will also be closed, this is so that they can position a 265-ton crane and other heavy equipment being used for repairs.
6:05 am
as far as what the work is that they're doing, crews are replacing a 50-year-old track component which b.a.r.t. says will improve the noise level on trains and give passengers a smoother ride. >> what do i see? i think they're terrific. you got to fix things. you got to do maintenance otherwise things break down. >> well, it is what it is. it does need some improvements, yes. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. hopes these improvements will benefit riders for decades to come but even with the buses in place between orinda and walnut creek stations during the track shutdowns, riders should expect delays up to 40 minutes and drivers along eastbound highway 24 should expect delays of up to 30 minutes. reporting live at walnut creek, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. >> 6:05 right now. kaiser permanente workers across the state are set to go on strike in october. 37,000 employees voted in favor of walking off the job.

our microclimate weather alert continues right now at 6:13. it will be still hot today. if we could just make it through today, it's going to be cooler this weekend, headed out the door in pleasant hill on the way to the b.a.r.t. station, because we're trying to spare the air, it's going to be in the mid-60s t early afternoon. we'll talk more about this and a cooler weekend ahead in less than five minutes. you'll see the flares highlight highlighted, i show an arrow right there, your right two lanes are blocked for southbound 880, right underneath that 66 avenue overcrossing. that crash the crews there block half the freeway. that's what's causing the big jam. another for san jose. we'll show you that coming up. good morning. i'm frank holland at cnbc headquarters. here are today's top business headlines.

wall street is poised to open up higher this morning, following the market's modest rebound yesterday. the dow leading those gains thanks to walmart's better than expected earnings. still, the dow is having its worst week since may, amid growing concerns about u.s./china trade talks, a slowdown in the global economy ofd fe recession. on today's watch list a report on housing starts and consumer sentiment. facebook are suing the company over a data breach last year. they say facebook failed to warn them about the risk tied to its single sign-on tool even though it protected employees. single sign-on connects users to third party apps and services using facebook logins. the suit stems from the company's worst security breach ever last september when hackers stole login codes or access tokens allowing them access to nearly 29 million accounts. attackers took profile details such as birth dates, employers, education history, types of device used and pages followed. facebook said hackers did not steal personal messages or financial information.

on the earth has happened in its past. we know what happened on the moon. all the craters are due to impacts. >> both nasa sean the tech companies say as the relationship grows and as we get closer to a mars mission, we can expect to see plenty of new job opportunities to help make that happen. >> that's pretty cool. look at this sight, that might have you say beam me up scottie. virgin atlantic includes an interactive walkway and place where you can grab a latte. >> of course it does. >> this is where people will one day wait before they head to their supersonic plane ride to space, but if you want to go, you're going to need to start saving that money now because those tickets are starting at $200,000 a flight. they will allegedly get under way next year. $200,000 for a flight. >> going out to space.
6:17 am
>> we have one spaceport, right? you have to go round trip? >> wait, how do i get back? a first date maybe. >> all right, a lot of people probably wanting to get away from all the heat this week. >> yes, but if we stay here, it's going to come to us. this weekend we will have some cooling headed our way, and today we just have to make it through before those temperatures cool off. that's a live look outside, and it's still looking hazy. it's a spare the air alert day, meaning that we are still going to have unhealthy air quality in the inland east bay, as well as the santa clara valley. a little bit of some smoke drifting in, the ozone and carbon emissions being trapped near surface level makes it unhealthy to breathe this air in, and this as kids continue their school and it's going to be starting out in palo alto at 65 degrees, and it's going to be at about 76 degrees at 10:00. so there they may be able to head outside and it warms up as we approach the last school bell
6:18 am
for the day and before they k at all of our d. microclimates going throughout the day, if you're planning to have lunch outside it's going to be 93 degrees in livermore. at noon we're at 84 in napa and oakland at of the bright pink showing extreme temperatures like we did yesterday but it's still going to be concord, in antioch, as well as napa, fairfield reaching the mid to upper 90s, and then briefly touching 100 degrees during the middle of the day. heading out this evening it's going to start to feel better around sunset. 78 degrees in danville and san jose is at 77 so the wind picks up and we start to cool off later on tonight, and our temperatures will be lower for the overnight hours. so our high pressure that's kept it hot is moving away as we go into the weekend, we'll see a shift in our winds as the ocean breeze returns, going into next week. there will be an approaching storm system for the pacific northwest, but for us, we are
6:19 am
still going to have some hot temperatures inland, as that moves closer to the coast. as you make weekend plans, it is better, get outside and enjoy some of the outdoor activities, like the martinez vintage market happening and look at the high temperatures, it's going to be nice, only reaching the low 80s for the middle of the day, and we're up to 87 degrees in some of our warmer spots, after today, and on sunday we're up to 84 degrees, and then we're back in the mid-90s next week. also cooling down in san francisco, as the fog returns tomorrow. mike, you're starting out with the flares. >> 880 the nimitz a busy stretch of roadway. southbound commute is jammed up right here just at that 66th avenue overcrossing. you see right two lanes blocked off. the updated app from chp, mickey's is 97. the tow truck from mucky's company is on scene and that is good news. they needed a larger tow truck. there are two on scene and the two right lanes are blocked here, means you are for
