those moments, how terrifying it must have been. >> dale earnhardt jr., of course a colleague of ours at nbc sports and a racing icon, amazing he and his family got out of the thing unscathed. >> we will start there. it is our top story. he, of course, is one of the most storied names in nascar. as mentioned, a member of our extended family here at nbc, and this morning dale earnhardt jr. and his family are recovering after they managed to escape the fiery wreckage. nbc's gabe gioux tear etz is in tennessee where it happened. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. it is rare to see this kind of wreckage up close and this plain rolled off the runway shortly after landing and burst into flames. the national transportation safety board will now investigate the crash. incredibly, no one was seriously injured. the smoke and flames from the wreckage could be seen for miles, but this morning nascar legend dale earnhardt jr. is out of the hospital after his

private plain rolled one rolled runway. >> the dude pulled a baby out of there. >> it is a private jet. >> reporter: capturing the plane fully engulfed on the edge of the highway. >> you could hear the commotion. it was a bunk of metal a and screech like it was. >> reporter: he and his wife and 1-year-old daughter were aboard the small cessna jet along with two pilots. >> five occupants. no one is injured. extremely blessed and fortunate. >> reporter: remarkably, all escaped with minor cuts. >> it looks like they were able to get out quickly and under their own power. >> reporter: earnhardt retired from racing in 2017, a year after a concussion sidelined him. >> non-racing fans know who dale earnhardt jr. is, and it is not just because of his success as a driver, it is also because he is the son of dale earnhardt, the late seven-time champion who is a nascar hall of famer and one of the most famous drivers in nascar history. >> reporter: his legendary father was killed in a crash 18 years ago on the final lap of

the daytona 500. he was just 49. >> dale earnhardt jr. wins the 46th daytona 500. >> reporter: dale jr. won the day taupe daytona title three years later in one of the most storied races in the history of the sport. now he's walking away from a frightening close call. >> it scared me now that you think about it. come that close to losing another great driver, you know. >> i can't even imagine how the family is feeling this morning, especially when we look at the wreckage behind you. gabe, i assume he is going to take some time off. >> reporter: yes, savannah. as you mentioned, he is an nbc sports analyst and in a written statement the network says he is taking this weekend off to be with his family but hopes to have him back in the broadcast booth next month. craig and savannah. >> a lot of people will be happy to see him, gabe. thank you very much. >> our wishes with the family as well. now to the uproar over the controversial move by israel, barring two democratic congresswoman from visiting the country. it came after a public push by president trump, but this

morning israel is signaling at least a partial chanf heart. nbc white house correspondent kristen welker joins us with the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: hi, craig. good morning to you. it is extremely rare if not unprecedented for an american president to side with a foreign government in an effort to punish political opponents here at home, but that's exactly what it appears president trump seems to be doing, using israel to sew divisions in the democratic party and to rally his base. this morning there is a new twist. this morning israel reversing course, saying congresswoman rasheed talib can enter the country on humanitarian grounds so she can visit family in the west bank including her ck under these oppressive conditions, tweeting, silencing me and treating me like a criminal is not what she wants for me. it comes after israel said it was denying talib and fellow congresswoman ilhan omar entry under israeli law because they

support a controversial boycott of israel. omar has also faced criticism, including from some democrats, about comments seen as anti-semitic, comments she later walked back. omar in particular a focus of president trump's rally overnight in new hampshire. >> maybe we can get representative omar from minnesota to open up, but i don't think so. >> reporter: mr. trump insisting israel made the right decision. >> well, i am only involved from the standpoint of they are very anti-jewish and they're very anti-israel. >> reporter: just last month the israeli ambassador said the two muslim women could visit, but on thursday an aboutface after unusual pressure from the president, who tweeted, "allowing the visit by omar and talib would show great weakness. they hate israel and all jewish people," something neither woman has said. earlier in the day the president insisting he had nothing to do with israel's decision. >> no, i don't encourage or discourage. the things that they've said,

omar, talib, what they've said is disgraceful. so i can't imagine why israel would let them in. >> reporter: omar calling the move to deny entry to representatives of the u.s. government an affront. republican marco rubio tweeting, denying them entry into israel is a mistake. the president has frequently targeted the two freshmen congresswomen, along with two of their colleagues, including a string of tweets telling all of them to go back where they came from. and not discouraging supporters at a rally after they chanted this about omar, who was born in somalia but is an american citizen. no response yet from the white house to israel's latest move. now, house speaker nancy pelosi called israel's initial decision deeply disappointing and said the president's comments about the lawmakers are beneath the office of the presidency. craig and savannah. >> kristen, the president apparently got quite the

reaction overnight when he made comments about guns and mental health. what did he say? >> reporter: well, craig, that's right. look, this caught everyone's attention because president trump has recently been so focused on expanding background checks, expressing a willingness to support that potentially. overnight in new hampshire, he seemed to put the focus on mental health. take a listen. >> there is a mental illness problem that has to be dealt with. it is not the gun that pulls the trigger, it is the person holding the gun. >> reporter: now, i just spoke with an administration official who told me that despite those comments, the president is still open to legislation that would expand background checks and pointed to discussions that have been taking place throughout the week between the white house and capitol hill about what might actually pass through congress when congress returns in the fall. but important to point out there is still a lot of scepticism

about anything passing, especially given that lawmakers are so deeply divided. are so deeply divided. craig and savannah. >> kristen welker for us there in new jersey. thank you. now to the scandal surrounding accused sex trafficker jeffrey epstein, his apparent suicide this morning one of the questions may have been answered nbc's stephanie gosk is on the story. >> good morning, guys. a lot of people have been wondering where is epstein's close friend and former confidante ghislaine maxwell it turns out she may not be on the run or hiding out overseas dressed casually and seemingly unfazed by someone taking her picture. this photo on the cover of today's "new york post" shows jeffrey epstein's long-time friend, ghislaine maxwell, reportedly grabbing lunch at in-n-out in l.a. according to the tabloid the photo was taken monday, but nbc news has not been able to verify when it was taken or why a manager at the burger joint telling us they don't remember

maxwell eating there and declining to share security camera footage the photo was allegedly taken the same day attorney general william barr issued a stark warning to epstein's associates following the financeer's death in federal custody. >> let me assure you this case will continue on against anyone who was complicit with epstein. >> reporter: maxwell has been accused in multiple lawsuits of recruiting teenage girls for epstein. one of the main architects of what prosecutors call a sex trafficking ring, something the british socialite has publicly denied for years. >> i made a statement. thank you. >> reporter: just this week jennifer aroaz, who says she was raped by epstein as a 15-year old, named maxwell as a defendant in a new lawsuit based on recently released documents in a 2015 defamation case against maxwell, epstein accuser says maxwell and epstein coerced her into having sex with powerful men. >> it started with one and then

trickled into two and so on and so forth you know, before you know it i'm being lent out to politicians and academics and to people that -- royalty. >> in that same suit her attorneys say maxwell recruited joanna showberg under the guice of an assistant position but asked her to perform massages. the cases was settled out of court and mass well mass not been criminally charged. the photo of a casual lunch a stark contrast to the shots of her high-society life. now with a cloud of suspicion over her head, life has taken a very different turn. >> so it appears to be her we see she is in los angeles, at least earlier this week. what about the investigation into the suicide >> well, pete williams -- >> apparent suicide. >> pete williams, our colleague, has reporting on that. he says a person familiar with the investigation says that the fbi and the inspector general have not actually been allowed to speak to all of the people that they want to speak to about this, that the union has told

them that they'll speak when they're ready. that obviously is slowing things down as far as the investigation is concerned, and we still haven't heard an official cause of death from the medical examiner. >> the union for those that work in the prison? >> the union for those who work in the prison. >> got it. thank you. also this morning, police in philadelphia are revealing new details about the hours-long hostage standoff with a gunman that left six officers hurt, and prosecutors are vowing to put the suspect in prison for the rest of his life nbc's ron allen is in philadelphia for us once again ron, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. we are getting our first close-up look at the scene of the massive fire fight it is right over there the suspect was in that white house. you can see there's damage everywhere there are bullet holes all over the building, windows blown out throughout the neighborhood. police say the gunhad at least one assault rifle, that he fired off more than 100 rounds, that even when he surrendered he still had a handgun in his pocket they say it was a miracle no one was killed or seriously wounded.

when it was over no one was more relieved than mom naomi, her 2-year old daughter safe in her arms. >> when i grabbed her and i just hugged her and she was grabbing me so tight and i knew she was scared. >> reporter: maya was one of 80 kids at the precious babies learning center just across the treat from where the accused gunman, maurice hill, engaged police in a fire fight that dragged well into the night. these pictures of officers rescuing the children being praised as an example of the heroic work by the philadelphia police the city's mayor moved by the scene. >> the officers are carrying them, holding their hands, i get -- kids should not have to go through that. >> reporter: the mayor, flanked by an array of state and local leaders, now leading the call for tougher gun laws. >> our officers need help. they need help keeping these weapons out of the hands of the bad guys >> reporter: as new images appear of the confrontation, many showing officers running toward the danger. six officers were shot and two more trapped in the same building as the gunman with

three civilians held hostage when police tried to execute a search warrant at the home suspected of being a stash for drugs and weapons. the violent encounter captured by a home security camera from across the streemt later, fellow officers seen standing in salute as wounded officers left the hospital the gunman surrendered after seven hours. another five people were shot and wounded thursday by an unidentified gunman just a few miles away police are still gathering evidence here at this scene before they formally charge the suspect, maurice hill. they say that he will face charges that include attempted murder, aggravated assault, firearms possessions, and they hope to put him away for the rest of his life craig, savannah. >> ron allen for us there in philly thanks some important information this morning about the climate july was the hottest month on record that announcement coming yesterday from the national oceanic and atmospheric administration

last day of some really hot temperatures but then it feels much better tomorrow. we're up to the upper 80s and seeing some mid 80s for the end of the weekend. by monday we do start out mild but it will be heating up as we inch closer toward the middle of next week with some mid-90s coming back for the valleys. san francisco reaching 79 degrees today, and upper 60s for the weekend, as the clouds and the fog return during those early morning hours. it will feel much better along its coastline. let's head over to mike for an update on the commute. >> kari, a little slowing for highway 4, typical as you head through pittsburg and bay point. a couple of crashes and disabled vehicles may take a while to clear but they are clear now. the reof the bay shows a smooth drive. down toward the south bay northbound 280 is slowing. there is an accident reported in the area but it's southbound, where we see no slowing. the live camera shows you northbound 280 coming up into the area again as we talked about, you see the congestion typical right there. back to you. >> thank you very much. another local news update in half an hour.

we're back 7:30 on this friday morning. ♪ we are back. 7:30 on this friday morning as our crowd gears up for a live concert from one of music's most distinctive voices, black will be gracing us in a few minutes he will take the stage in the next hour. >> he sounds good. we heard him on sound check a few minutes ago. let's get to the headlines of the morning. one of the most storied names in nascar out of the hospital after a fiery plain crash in tennessee. dale earnhardt jr., his wife amy and their 1-year-old daughter were aboard the jet along with two pilots the private plane rolled off the runway after landing and burst into flames.

you see it there incredibly, nobody was seriously injured. the ntsb is investigating the cause of the crash eastern heart is an nbc sports analyst and the network says he will take the week off to be with his family. the man who killed nine people in dayton, ohio and injured others was on drugs at the time of the attack the gunman, 24-year-old conor betts had cocaine and alcohol in his system at the time of the shooting authorities found cocaine in his pocket he was shot and killed by police about 30 seconds after he opened fire police did not -- excuse me, police have yet to identify a motive in the attack a surprising report out of the white house this morning president trump has on multiple occasions discussed trying to buy the country of greenland and white house counsel has looked into it. that's according to a source familiar with the matter greenland is an autonomous danish territory he was told last spring denmark

is having financial problems because of the subsidies he pays to greenland and wondered if he should buy it. it is unclear if denmark would consider the offer president truman offered to purchase it for $100 million in 1946 but denmark declined the offer. now to a wild story of survival a couple from new jersey and their two children attacked by a wolf in the canadian wilderness, and if not for a stranger who heard the chaos their story could have ended far differently. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer has the details on this one. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it was a terrifying ordeal from the young american family. they were vacationing in canada's oldest national park when suddenly they weren't alone in their tent. at the national park where the canadian rocky mountains soar over icy lake water, the rispolli family was sound asleep in their tent when a 78-pound wolf like this one decided to

attack the camper could hear the screams for help. >> i assumed i would be coming upon frightened parents that misplaced their kids when i arrived the tent was collapsed and there was the back half of a wolf sticking out the front of it. >> reporter: on facebook, his wife, alisa, writes, it was like something out of a horror movie. matt literally threw his body in front of me and the boys and fought the wolf as it ripped apart our ternt a apart our tent and his arms and hands. we were screaming for help as he was fighting it and trying to save us. startled by the life and death struggle playing out before him in the dark, fee says his instincts took over when he decided to kick the wolf as hard as he could. >> the wolf popped out, a little curious i think. i was trying to assess how much trouble i was in i wasn't sure if it was coming at me or not but it wasn't snarling or growling at me at all. >> reporter: the wolf just let go of rispolli who was nearly dragged into the forest.

>> matt popped out right away and it was pretty good he was pretty amped up, so he was able to grab like a broken tent pole. i was able to pick up a rock. >> reporter: the struggle lasted minutes. the men finally able to scare the animal away. treated for his injuries, rispolli was released from a local hospital later that night rangers came across the wolf and killed it in a park filled with wild animals, attacks like these are rare. and so are stories of survival >> so, miguel, like you said there, this kind of attack is rare any reason, any possible reason the wolf might have attacked this family? >> reporter: rangers say they have some clues. the wolf was older, underweight and in poor health all reasons are possible for attack the attacks are rare it was checked for rabies and it came back clear.

good friday morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. our microclimate weather alert continues as we endure one last hot day, as we take a live look outside in san jose, before you step out the door, it does feel nice, with some upper 60s now, we're headed up to 97 degrees. 101 will be the high in livermore, as well as clearlake, napa reaching 98 and oakland today expecting a high of 87 degrees. after this day of some dangerous heat, we are going to cool down significantly tomorrow, reaching into the upper 80s in some of our warmer spots. 84 degrees on sunday, and we also start out the week with some near normal temperatures, but then start to warm back up for the middle of next week, for san francisco looking at upper 70s today. the fog returns tomorrow morning, and our high temperatures stay in the upper 60s. we will see our temperatures staying in the 60s until about next wednesday, when we reach into the lower 70s. we'll continue to monitor that. let's get an update on how the roads are going with mike.

good morning. at 8:56 i'm marcus washington. this morning the power is back on for thousands of people who had it suddenly shut off last night. this is video from larkspur. a pg&e spokesperson says they still don't know what caused the widespread outage that affected marin county, contra costa, and thousands of customers lost their power. most was restored by 1:30 this morning. happening now another fire scare

overnight in southern santa clara county. this happened along highway 101 in gilroy. crews were able to quickly extinguish the brush fire after it started overnight near the monterey exit. strict new rules could translate to more e-bikes hitting the streets in san francisco. according to the examiner this morning city officials are now saying lyft which owns some of those bikes must make them available at all times. this comes after the company struggled to keep a minimum number on the streets. if they cannot do that insiders tell the paper that san francisco could allow more companies to operate e-bikes in the city. recently lyft pulled its fleet after two caught fire. more news in an hour. of course we're always on at nbc bay area.com.
