san francisco will be in the low 70s. we have hotter temperatures ahead so i'll talk more about that. mike, so far looks all quiet on the roads. >> yes, green. it's green all over. the speed sensors i'm talking about, that's great stuff. a smooth drive. we had construction slowing things down north 880 just past 238 for a while. south around 7th we may have another traffic break over the next half hour as crews have yet to leave the area. the cash lanes on either side of the bay bridge have seen the crowd build a bit. the two lanes off to the left are not open just yet. back to you. continuing coverage on a story making news across the nation, if you haven't seen it yet, really incredible dramatic video of an ocean rescue after a small plane crashed on the peninsula. you can see the pilot waving his arms before he's eventually spotted by the coast guard. it all happened yesterday when the pilot and his passenger

crashed about eight miles west of half moon bay. >> both are alive and well this morning and sharing their story. also the moment of impact was caught on video as "today in the bay's" ian cull shows us in his report. >> reporter: this is the moment of impact when denver pilot david lesch crashed with one friend in the passenger seat. his other friend was fill mming from another aircraft because they were doing a midair photo shoot of his new plane. >> just landed in the [ muted ] ocean. >> reporter: david lesch with a waterproof phone kept documenting. >> there she goes. >> reporter: it took a minute before they were in the water, the plane started sinking. they were not hurt but got stung by jellyfish. the other pilot kept circling and radioing air traffic control. >> your heart sinks, "may day i have no power" it kicks in. >> reporter: he calls you ten minutes on the phone later.

>> i've never been so relieved to hear him on the phone. >> reporter: the two treading water as he kept an eye on their position for about 30 minutes. luckily, the rescue helicopter was already in the area on a training mission. >> we got the call, we responded immediately, headed directly out there and were able to spot the orbiting aircraft and find the people in the water. >> reporter: lesch doesn't know exactly what went wrong with the plane. >> i was 3,000 or 4,000 feet agl, lost power, did everything i could to get the motor going again, wasn't happening so i put it into the pacific. >> reporter: he spoke with us alongside the men and women who found them ten miles out in the ocean south of half moon bay, an incredible life-saving rescue. >> coast guard was awesome. we would have been dead for sure. if i was out there maybe half an hour, i don't think i could have, i don't think my muscles would have been working. >> reporter: ian cull, "today in the bay." >> wow. so that pilot says he only had

the plane for about three months, but he had adequate training. federal prosecutors are talking for the first time about what they call one of the biggest immigration scams in california history. it involves a well-known who they say defrauded foreign investors out of $110 million. we have video from a previous story we've done on tom henderson. he now owns the tribune tower in oakland. investigators say he did so with money built from investors promising their money would help four nationals obtain green cards. more than 200 people were scammed. the doj also says investors were told the money would generate more than 2,000 jobs. our pete suratos following the story for us. he'll join us with a live report ahead at 5:30. a 13-year-old san francisco boy is being credited for his bravery after helping save his father from an attack. this is the video of the family chocolate store xox truffles in north beach, where the shop owner kicked out a man of that

store on monday, after he says the man kept threatening other customers. when the owner chased that man into the street, he says that the man the put him in a chokehold. the video shows the teen springing into action and grabbing a bat. >> that's when he grabbed me and started doing a chokehold and very quickly i was running out of oxygen and i was like crying for help. >> makes me feel pretty proud of myself and happy and i also feel like i just did what i thought was right. >> that teen never resorted to using the bat, and at tacker ran off, only to return hours later, and that's when police arrested him. a follow-up now on a controversial name plan in san francisco. opponents vow to keep fighting despite the decision to name muni's new chinatown station after rose pak. mta board members narrowly approved it following hours of

debate. the official name will be chinatown rose pak station. supporters remember her as a ground-breaking community organizer who loved chinatown. opponents say she used intimidation tactics on those who didn't agree with her. new details firefighters want to know what sparked a junkyard fire on monday that triggered a shelter in place. the fire sent thick plumes of black smoke into the sky. it turns out oily rags spontaneously combusted. in their announcement firefighters reminded people to store and dispose of oily rags properly along with any combustible materials. >> 4:36. in contra costa county, authorities say they mean business with their latest effort to track down on side shows. the chp posted video of some of the most recent side shows on august 11th in rodeo and crockett. the da's office is reviewing each case which included dozens of spectators and several arr t

good morning. i'm frank holland at cnbc headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street is set to open up higher, aever stocks fell yesterday. the dow dropping for the first time in four sessions as recession worries crept back into the markets. on today's watch list, a report on existing home sales and the minutes from last month's fed meeting, when the fed cut interest rates for the first time in more than a decade. we also get earnings from lowe's and from target. youtube is reportedly finalizing plans to eliminate targeted ads on its main site for videos that kids are likely to watch. this could be a move aimed at appeasing the federal trade comission which has examined whether youtube violated the children's online privacy protection act through data collection and failing to protect young users on that platform. and facebook is launching a new way for users to have more control over their personal

day and we have more kids headed back to school today, so happy first day of school in evergreen in san jose. we'll see those temperatures this morning at about 60 degrees and then going from the low 60s to the upper 70s at lunch time, and then some low 80s as you are headed back to pick them up from school. our temperatures in the tri-valley reach up to 91 degrees today. 93 in antioch and we're in santa rosa going to see a high of 92 degrees. san francisco reaching 73, and in oakland today 80 degrees. so a clear view and a start this morning that will be cool for the early hours, so grab a jacket but the rest of the day you'll be comfortable with something flowy, lightweight and something that may keep you cool in some of our warmer temperatures. we do have some warming ahead as we go through the rest of the week, so we're starting to see this storm system that's been bringing some light rain across the pacific northwest bringing us to the north so that will not affect our area and as we go

into the rest of the week, high pressure starts to build and keepds keeps us from getting our ocean breeze that helped cool us off for the past couple of days. by the end of the week we see slightly warmer temperatures and the weekend we're still going to stay hot, so our seven-day forecast shows that we'll be in the low to mid-90s into the rest of the week, into next week as well, and for san francisco, expect some 70s over the next several days, up to 74 degrees for sunday, and just slightly warmer for the start of next week. as we head over to mike, you've been tracking a little shift at the bay bridge. >> a little bit of a shift. the traffic was backed up and two lanes on either side, the last time we checked just a few minutes ago, now we shifted over one lane so we have three lanes because one more cash lane opened over here on the left approach. on the right approach things must have opened up for another lane as well because traffic is not backed up anymore. that's good stuff, a typical pattern as we approach 5:00. we should see all lanes open by

5:00, 5:05 and no problem for the maze. slowing southbound 808 past seventh toward 23rd, i think there may be another crew slowly clearing around 980 so prepare for the flashing lights and always slow for the cone zones and any crews doing roadwork keeping the roads moving nice and smooth for the rest of the bay. back to you. >> thanks, mike. authorities in southern california are working on new clues in the deadly stabbing of a former cal state administrator. new surveillance video shows the man police believe murdered steven chan on the fullerton state campus. police say they shows what they believe is blood on one of his hands caused by an injury he sustained during that attack. they also released a sketch you see right here of the man they're still looking to find. detectives believe chan was targeted but still don't know a motive at this time. chan leaves behind a wife and two teenagers. as you can imagine, neighbors are in shock. >> as a neighbor and as a school board member, we have a profound

sense of loss. >> police say they also have surveillance video of the actual attack, but that has not been released. when you see this next video it might be hard to believe that no one was seriously hurt, happened yesterday in los angeles when a dump truck slammed into an apartment building. the driver walked away unhurt and the crash is under investigation. 4:49 and former vice president joe biden is opting out of a bay area appearance this week to go to new hampshire instead to campaign. that means biden will not attend the democratic national committee's summer meeting. the three-day conference kicks off tomorrow in san francisco. 13 other presidential hopefuls will be there, including senators elizabeth warren, kamala harris and bernie sanders. you might remember biden also did not attend the california democratic party in june. happening today, activists in san francisco plan to renew

their calls for impeachment. they plan to gather outside the intercontinental hotel on howard street in the city, where house speaker nancy pelosi is set to receive an award from san francisco's democratic party. pelosi has made it clear she believes starting an impeachment process would be politically divisive, even though more than half of house democrats actually are calling for an inquiry. 4:50 for you this morning. coming up here on "today in the bay," "nbc baarea rponds." >> our reports about home inventories inspire a north bay family to start a business. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. we'll have that story next. but first, happening now, police in atlanta investigating an overnight shooting near a college campus, where four people were injured. the shooting happened around 10:30 last night near the heart of park atlanta university on the city's west side. it's actually unclear what led up to the shooting and so far, no arrests have been made. we'll be right back after this break.

"today in the bay" continues right now. i better watch the other ones first. >> neo. >> thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. mike will have a look at the commute coming up in a bit. first we want to talk about the forecast. meteorologist kari hall is tracking that for us. what are we looking at today? >> looks pretty good as we get ready to head out the door and it will be a little bit warmer today as we take a live look outside in concord, some of the low 60s as you walk out there, and it's going to be a little bit hotter as we head into the rest of the day, some upper 80s by early afternoon. here is a look at all of our high temperatures, up to 93 in antioch today. we're giving the temperatures a little bit of a boost compared to yesterday, and that's going to be the trend headed into the weekend. i'll have more on that. mike, you're checking out a crash on the peninsula. >>ert that, kari. take a big look at the bay and

show you a traffic flow as far as the green sensors all over. half moon bay just where the folks survived that crash. we'll talk about that and show you the video coming up. it's spectacular, as far as the view you get. over here not a big deal, south 101 but only the hillsdale on-ramp. once they hear it's the on-ramp the freeway maintains a smooth, easy drive and all lanes for highway 101 are open through the area. toward the east bay wit at mild slowing southbound on 880, right around 980, looks like that construction crew is just about clear. there may be one more traffic break over the next half hour but so far, traffic flows smoothly toward the bay bridge and the tri-valley no delays, just a little bit of slowing, you tap the brakes in one patch of highway 84. back to you been. >> thank you, mike. back to the top story and the crash landing in the cold waters off of half moon bay. people in another plane were shooting video and both people in the plane that crashed survived. >> miraus
