and good morning to you. it's friday, and that rhymes with fri-yay, hey! 4:30 for you, a live look at san francisco from san bruno mountain. beautiful shot, in case you want to sit out on the top of your hood, lay back and feel like you're in a movie. >> just for a couple of minutes until the sun is up. then you're all -- >> ahh! thanks for starting your morning with us. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. maybe you saw her with raj, it was fun to have her on tv while watching dinner. the forecast was not fun. >> no, it was so hot yesterday and it'es hot again this afternoon. here is a live look in fremont, at least it starts out cool, and it's not as humid.

our temperatures drop down to the lower 60s this morning, and then start to rise, we'll be at 73 degrees at 10:00, some upper 70s by 11:00, and our south bay high temperatures headed up to 89 in downtown san jose. east san jose 93 degrees. we'll get a look at all of our microclimates coming up and mike, you already have a crash and some slowing. >> we do, a crash and slowing may be eindependent of one another. over here out of the altamont a little slowing and a crash reported at north flynn. the slowing should be because of the construction crew which is clearing now. mild slowing, and then the crash at north flynn, there may be another around greenville, not sure of the details. sounds similar, so we'll call it one crash for now. there may be another crash over toward the bay bridge, although this is not what is making the slowdown. the slowdown is because we don't have all the cash lanes are open. we'll let you know what's going on in the next report. back to you.

>> thanks, mike. a banged up mess along one san jose neighborhood after a driver plowed through a bunch of parked cars. this morning, witnesses say the driver then took off running. >> "today in the bay's" roz plater is live along moor park and saratoga. is everyone okay? >> reporter: one person was taken to the hospital. this was a mangled mess. some of the cars are still out here. the mercedes they swiped off the mirror and did denting and damage but just ahead of it here, this ford suv is a mangled mess, the back of it twisted. that's going to require a lot of work and we'll see whether or not it is able to be salvaged. let's show you pictures from just after this happened. this went down just before 11:00 last night in the 3900 block of moor a trucra street here. some had extensive damage from

that. so loud at first he thought a vehicle struck his apartment building but the truck wound up flipped over completely upside down. >> we came out on our balcony, saw a bunch of lights out. we walked out here and there's just like seven cars that were just hit and a couple of them just they were hit pretty bad. >> reporter: that witness told us he saw one person taken to the hospital. we don't know the extent of the injuries. we also don't know what happened to that driver that witnesses say they saw took off running. for now, we are trying to get more information from police about this and about the cause and why it may have happened. as soon as we get more information, we'll pass it along. we're live in san jose, i'm roz plater for "today in the bay." >> all right, roz, thanks for the update. 4:33 for you right now. decision 2020 and today san francisco wile the

democratic national committee summer meeting. among those attending, kamala harris, cory booker and tom steyer. nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston says it's less about votes and more can b cash. >> the most important part is california's cash register. they'll meet, have a fund-raiser, or two or three, bring in lots of money and their work will be done. >> front-runner joe biden is not coming to the bay area and said he's going to campaign in new hampshire. most of the other contenders who are not appearing do plan to provide a video address. >> following his appearance at the dnc summer meeting, senator bernie sanders today plans to hold a town hall meeting also in san francisco at sv focused on student debt and affordable college. last night sanders stopped in sacramento for a rally as you see right here, where he touted

feature, calling for $16 trillion to reverse climate change. earlier in the day, he was in butte county, where he caught up with efforts to rebuild paradise. sanders blames recent wildfire devastation on global warming. also molts of terror for kids and parents during what had been a routine youth football practice in hayward. >> there was a shooting at my son's football practice just now. >> cell phone video taken by a mother, seconds after shots were fired yesterday. it happened at sorendale park behind tennison high school. a 17-year-old was hit by the gunfire. he is expected to survive but one parent says three pop warner teams were also practicing, so younger kids, along with a cheer squad. >> we heard a gunshot and we looked, girls werecting and coaches just told us to like hide. >> three men were seen running

from a park restroom after that shooting but so far police have ounced any arrests. also developing this morning in shasta county, firefighters appear to be making headway on a wildfire threatening homes near lake shasta. this started yesterday morning about 15 miles north of redding. hundreds of people spent a long night evacuating. >> reporter: power is expected to be restored sometime this morning. so far, the fire has burned over 800 acres, threatening 1,000 homes. we met up with a family from san ramon who lost their home to fire a decade ago. they found themselves running from fire again here in shasta county. >> it is kind of scary, yeah, because it looked to be heading our way. when that fire was going, the wind was blowing pretty good, from the fire, towards our house, so we were kind of nervous about that. >> i was upset at the beginning but i'm a lot calmer now, knowing that my house is still standing, unlike our house in

san ramon, it's still standing and everything will be there when we get there. >> reporter: the cause of the fire is still under investigation. in shasta county, cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." even if you are already completely prepared for the possibility of an emergency evacuation, new information suggests that some bay area cities would likely experience gridlock, that is because there are too few escape routes. the list from street light data includes sausalito, southern marin fire held a fire evacuation drill back in july. the mayor there believes there are ample options. >> we do have two, three exits off the highway. we have the boats, and then we have this major artery here. >> in an emergency, he says the golden gate bridge district would provide ferries and if there was gridlock, some residents could use a system of stairs to head to highway 101 or toward the water. developing while you were sleeping, in sacramento, investigators trying to piece together why light rail train

crashed into another train last night injuring nearly 30 passengers. 13 people went to the hospital, two suffering serious injuries that were not life-threatening, that happened when the light rail train struck a maintenance train, this is before 10:00 p.m. near winter street station outside of sacramento city limits. the workers on the maintenance train were not hurt. coming up on "today in the bay," youtube is shutting down hundreds of channels. why google believes this move will stop the spread of false information. and while we're still more than four months from christmas, one tour company is increasing its options for toys. the big buy from toymake er hasbro.

kari will have a look at that coming up in just a bit. 4:45 for you right now. it's friday and that means a lot of people looking forward to some r&r this weekend. >> not to mention the relief that the work week is over but one man is proving that even at 98, you don't always need to relax. this is him doing his thing, this is benny pacheco working at a new jersey supermarket two days a week, when he bags groceries for a few hours. he's a world war ii veteran who says the army taught him all about hard work. this week he received a red, white and blue themed party for his 98 th birthday but said he' not done yet. >> i'm going for 100. if i make 100, i think i'll bes. >> mr. pacheco says he first developed his sense of gratitude decades ago back in the war when his plane was shot down and he survived. >> the fact that he's able to just move and go like that at 98? >> i know. >> i just wish.

>> we'll be creaking around. >> he was like bagging those groceries, like, next. >> i'll think twice about asking someone else to do it. >> got to keep young. >> well frank does it at 98. all right, so look, a lot of people going outside this week to understand get some fun, some temperatures? >> i think it's still going to be hot. we've had hot weather throughout much of the week and it continues. here is a live look outside in san francisco. we can see a little bit of fog there rolling across the bay and i think we'll see a little bit more as we go into late morning, into the rest of the day. we'll see some clearing. as you head out the door in antioch, your morning commute is looking good. not as muggy as yesterday but you're probably still feeling some of that humidity as we start out with upper 60s. at 8: and leading to some low 80s by 11:00 this morning. let's go to the south bay and check out our high temperatures for today, milpitas reaching 90 degrees. also 90 in morgan hill today. east bay high temperatures in

the mid-90s, matching where we were yesterday, pleasanton up to 95 degrees. oakland reaching 80, and for the peninsula, we're still going to see the upper 60s at half moon bay and much warmer temperatures as you head over the hills to redwood city and it's going to reach up to 74 in the mission district. north bay high temperatures in the upper 90s for ukiah, novato up to 88 degrees. so still a wide range in temperatures as high pressure remains over the region. it's giving us not much of a wind, but we are at times still seeing the coastal fog, so we're not seeing the coastal areas heat up as much. going into the end of the weekend it just stays hot as we continue on, so why not find somewhere to cool off. you'll be able to get some free ice cream tonight with nbc bay area treat truck, and our own mike inouye will be out there in fremont. it's going to be hot early, but as the evening goes on, it's going to cool off fast. we'll be at and then tomorrow we have the palo alto festival of the arts.

there we'll see our high temperatures reaching the low 80s, and if you're there as it first opens, it will be 72 degrees. but we will still have some hot weather in our forecast, some low 90s inland for today as well as tomorrow and then hotter on sunday, reaching 96 degrees, but temperatures peak on monday, 97, and then start to come back down just a little bit more the middle of next week. mike, you had a crash at the toll plaza. >> we found it, scott in our operations center found the flashing lights and then they just left i think because kari was talking about higher temperatures right when she was mentioning the 90s the crews cleared. this is the toll plaza itself and it was the fastrak lanes over off to the left approach now clear across the span. things are just fine, again at shoulder and theoll plaza withus bit of build, both sets of fastrak lanes cleared, so is the rest of contra costa county on the approach out of walnut creek or off the upper east shore freeway. highway 4 no slowing out of antioch and vasco down toward brentwood and eventually 580

moves smoothly. the crash around 580 still reported, one at grant line road, the other might be closer to north livermore but out of lanes and we don't see any slowing there. there is the tri-valley, south bay, peninsula, all moving at speed. back to you. >> thank you, mike. 4:50 now. new details in the stabbing death at a southern california university this week. police now arrested a former co-worker in the death of an administrator at fullerton state. that stabbing happened monday morning and wednesday night officers arrested the suspect at his home. neighbors there say they're shocked. >> it's unbelievable to me, because he was such a sweet, friendly man, any time i had anything to do with him, which was very seldom. >> police say a backpack was found at the scene belonging to the suspect. so far, they're not talking about any possible motive. federal prosecutors are talking more about a massive crackdown targeting dozens of online scammers. 80 people in total face charges. 11 were taken into custody

yesterday in the los angeles area, where they say money laundering that was centered, it targeted businesses and hacking into their email systems to divert money, online romances and dank accounts are also a focus. even u.s. troops were targeted, prosecutors say. >> no some cases the victims in this case thought they were communicating with u.s. servicemen stationed overseas, when in fact, they were emailing with conmen. some of the victims in this case lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in this way. >> six of the 80 people charged are fugitives. many live abroad, mostly in nigeria. 4:51. high school football is starting up around california this weekend but there's one game in particular that will be about a lot more than what's happening on the field. >> i love this story. tonight paradise valley high school finally cranks up the friday night lights for the first time since that deadly camp fire there. lost in the tragedy of last year's fire is the fact the bob cats were set to play their first playoff game one day after
