5:00 am
i guess the guy ended up getting out of the truck that flipped and took off running. it was pretty crazy on what happened. >> right now at 5:00, the search for the driver witnesses say crashed into all of those cars overnight, and then kept going. a live report from the scene, just moments away. plus more racist fliers found in the bay area and southern california, this after similar fliers were discovered on san jose university's camp thus week. coming up, the group claiming to be behind the disturbing trend. and silicon valley pride kicks off today. the big names that will perform and attend, coming up. "today in the bay" continues right now. >> and good morning to you. thanks so much for starting your friday right here with us on "today in the bay." i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia this morning, because she was working late last night, maybe you saw her right before the dinner hour.
5:01 am
jeff ranieri was there giving the forecast just the same as you are, very hot. >> very hot for the inland areas and we're at least going to see some 90s in some of the hotter areas. today in the south bay, we're starting out with clear skies and some mid-60s. it's a little bit humid this morning in campbell and we'll see the temperatures at about 63 degrees until 8:00, and then rising temperatures today, we're still well above normal. we'll talk more about this and a look ahead to weekend events. mike, you're worried about a crash in the south bay. >> i am because of the details. traffic is everywhere in the bay but the green sensors throughout silicon valley is fine but getting there may be an issue. look at the slowing already northbound 101 coming up through morgan hill as you pass by dunn and approaching cochrane a crash is involving a motorcycle. the fast lane is blocked and chp not yet there. the rest of the bay predictable. back to you. >> thanks, mike. new overnight, a bang-up mess along one san jose neighborhood after a driver
5:02 am
plowed through a bunch of cars you see right there and this morning witnesses say that driver took off running. >> "today in the bay's" roz plater is live at moorpark at saratoga. we have to ask, is anybody hurt? >> reporter: yes, indeed somebody was taken to the hospital, we don't know how badly hurt but you can see some of this wreckage is still out here this morning. look at that car, just twisted, the back end of it twisted, that's an suv, and it plowed into the vehicle in front of it. now let's show you the scene from just after this happened, all of this went down just before 11:00 last night in the 3900 block of moorpark. witnesses tell us it appears a truck crashed into at least half a dozen cars parked along the street here. some of them had pretty extensive damage. one man told us the crash sass so loud at first he thought the vehicle had struck their apartment building. the truck wound up flipped over and completely upside down. >> the guy ended up getting out of the truck that flipped and took off running. how, i don't know, because it looked like a pretty bad
5:03 am
accident. >> reporter: that witness says at least one person he saw was taken to the hospital. we're trying to find out more information from police about the status of that person taken to the hospital as well as what happened to that driver who witnesses say took off running after the crash. live in san jose, i'm roz plater for "today in the bay." >> thank you, roz. president trump heads to france tonight for the weekend's g7 summit which he says should really be g8. russia was kicked out five years ago and mr. trump wants them back. tracie potts is live in washington plus two personalities to watch out for this morning. tracie? >> hi, marcus, good morning, everyone. those two personalities, president trump and the man they call president trump of europe, is he making his first appearance at the g7 as president trump of the u.s., suggests that maybe it should be the g8 and maybe they should bring vladimir putin back to the table.
5:04 am
13,000 officers ready for protests at this weekend's g7 uhm isity in southern france, banks and the beach are closed, stores boarded up in case demonstrations turn violent. there's tension between the u.s. and europe on trade, iran, climate change, and president trump's push to reinstate russia. >> if somebody would make that motion, i would certainly be disposed to think about it very favorably. >> reporter: russia was removed in 2014 after invading crimea. >> to invite them back in without condition essentially ratifies that illegal act. >> it makes it look like he owes president putin some kind of favor. >> reporter: europeans aren't crazy about the idea either. >> the case has yet to be made out for russia to return to the g7. >> reporter: that's boris johnson, britain's new prime minister. some call him europe's version of trump. >> they would probably get like a house on fire or pretend to.
5:05 am
>> reporter: the world's seven largest economies are expected to end this meeting without a joint statement for the first time ever. now remember last year, president trump walked out of the g7 early and abruptly over trade dispute they're trying to avoid that kind of public rift this time. from washington, i'm tracie potts, "today in the bay." >> thank you, tracie. new this morning, anti-semitic fliers showing up in the north bay and novato city leaders along with police and school leaders and the community say they are united against hate. residents reported seeing the fliers near storefronts in the downtown area near their safeway store there and at least a dozen other stores in places around san martin high school campus. earlier a group called the american identity movement posted fliers around san jose state university. the fliers had slogans like nationalism not globalism, and diversity destroys nations.
5:06 am
the group is known for trying to recruit young people, but all the fliers were taken down before classes started this week. other racist fliers and stickers were posted at san diego state university. officials say a white nationalist hate group is responsible for the fliers there. new details on a proposed b.a.r.t. station between b.a.r.t.'s fremont and warm springs stations. b.a.r.t. wants to open an irvington station in fremont near osgood road and washington boulevard. b.a.r.t. directors yesterday approved the plan to move forward with the project. construction will not begin before 2023 and it's not expected to be completed until 2026 at the earliest. developing this morning, hawaiian airlines still not saying what caused smoke to fill the cabin of this plane here on your screen that was headed from oakland to hawaii. this is brand new video in to our newsroom overnight. when the plane touched down in honolulu, passengers evacuated on the emergency chutes. many say they were terrified, but they tried to remain calm. >> we were on the final approach coming in and all of a sudden
5:07 am
the cabin just filled up with smoke, so we just all had to kind of go like this to breathe. >> there were 184 people on board. seven passengers, including two children, were taken to hospitals to be treated for smoke inhalation. this morning, claims burning man is death to disabilities. two deaf men are suing the festival saying the event violates the americans with disabilities act by not having interpreters. the suit is also seeking an unspecified amount of money. burning man begins on sunday. >> i always wanted to go to that. 15,000 people are expected to descend onto the south bay this weekend to celebrate the lgbtq community. events for the 44th annual silicon valley pride start tomorrow. the theme this year, diversity and action. this year is also the 50th anniversary of the stonewall rye the i don'ts, the protests in new york city that some credit
5:08 am
with starting the pride movement. it will be remembered as a part of the '70s themed disco party tomorrow night, sounds fun, an organizer tells us it's important for everyone to reflect and remember the landmark moment in lgbtq history. >> it's important to know your history. it's also important to know why pride, why we celebrate pride, why pride happens, because it's a rally. >> the pride parade through downtown san jose on sunday will be headlined by singer macy gray, and ru paul's drag race winner evey oddley. for more details for this weekend's event head to our website, nbcbayarea.com. a lot of people have the weather, what is it going to be like, kari? >> it's going to start out nice and mild for the early hours but then it will heat up as we go throughout the day and on sunday, we've got the parade going on and it starts out with temperatures in the mid-70s. it's going to be very nice, but
5:09 am
notice how fast those temperatures heat up throughout the rest of the day, with the festivities continuing. as we get out the door this morning, we're going to have some mid-60s, and right now in palo alto, san jose is 65, but look at santa rosa, that's the cool spot, 55 degrees. heading out to school this morning in san lorenzo we'll see temperatures there at about 61 degrees on the way to school but heating up into the upper 70s by the time we hear that last school bell. we'll talk more about that and mike, you're still seeing some slowing through morgan hill. >> unexpectedly so, because it's only 5:09 so silicon valley is just fine but if you head to san jose, out of san martin, we have a problem for you because of a crash north 101 just shy of cochrane road. fast lane is still blocked by chp and hopefully an ambulance is there. reports of minor injuries, though, and that's always good news because it was a motorcycle-involved crash and only minor injuries, we'll hope for that. a slow drive from san martin. everything else looking green on
5:10 am
our sensors. there may be a new crash off the nimitz freeway, checking that for oakland. the shift from cash to fastrak lanes for slowing. coming up a live report from cnbc before the opening bell. and the first event held at the warriors brand new home, the chase center in san francisco. and new this morning, looking for a new pet? how about this mountain lion? okay, i'm kidding. this is really a cat. 26 pounds, meow mix. >> no. >> 26-pound cat there, searching for an adorable home. we want to help it get a home. maybe we can get it for our producer of the team. this would be a perfect gift for him. we're going to work on that and have more of that, right after the break. you're watching "today in the bay." 5:10. >> that's not a cat. >> it is. we are here to discuss jessie's online time.

5:13 am
right now at 5:13 as you head out the door in oakland on your way to the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station, it's going to be nice and cool. low 60s. we'll be at 61 degrees at 7:00, and then leading to some upper 60s by 10:00. today 77 at 1:00. a nice day overall but heating up in the valleys. i'll show you all of your microclimates coming up in less than five minutes. >> fremont 880 the nimitz freeway past the truck scales just fine but you have company. we're not looking at any clear roads but the speed sensors looking good except for morgan hill. we'll track that crash.
5:14 am
good morning. i'm frank holland at cnbc headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. stocks look to open up lower after china announced it will levy its own tariffs on u.s. goods. wall street is looking to end this week on a high note and snap a three-week losing streak. a busy day could be ahead as investors will be focused on a key speech later this morning from fed chairman jay powell, when he delivers his remarks on the economy. on today's watch list, the government will release a report on new home sales for july. gookle is shutting down more than 200 youtube channels relating to the protest in hong kong. the company is saying it found the channels tied to the spread of misinformation in a coordinated manner about those protests. this comes just a few days after twitter and facebook announced they would suspend 1,000 accounts linked to a state-backed campaign originating from inside of china. and u.s. toymaker hasbro is making a $4 billion purchase, the company is buying uk-based media company entertainment one. the owner of "peppa pig" the popular series.
5:15 am
the deal would add to hasbro's toy portfolio, it includes the brands my little pony, transformers and play-doh. me and marcus are going to spare anybody our transformers duet this time. >> thoroughly enjoyed it. i was not watching transformers after school. >> thanks, frank. >> thanks, frank. >> 5:15 for you right now. if you got inside the new chase center last night, that was technically the first event in the new arena. the event open house was only for warrior fans and employees, able to eat, shoot some hoops and listen to live music. opening night features metallica and san francisco symphony friday, september 6th. >> here we look through the window, awesome. how does a 19-hour flight sound? australia's qantas airlines is testing it, connecting sydney with new york and london. the tests are meant to be in
5:16 am
part how long flights like that one would affect passengers' health. about 40 people are taking part, but you can't book your ticket just yet. qantas won't start the routes for at least two years. new this morning, this is not a bobcat, i repeat, it is not a bobcat. >> i think it is. >> it is a jumbo sized package of fluff that needs a new home. this is morris animal refuge in philadelphia. they posted this photo of mr. b. yesterday saying the 26-pound cat needs a new home and maybe a diet plan, but i'm not judging anyone, but some people have asked about adopting the chubby tabby. the rescue says that it's getting overwhelmed, and it's beautiful, it's just big. >> it looks like a photo shop, like it looks like a regular cat. >> lady is maybe just petite. maybe she's three feet tall. >> maybe. >> i think that's a big cat. >> that's pretty big.
5:17 am
>> my dog is ten pounds so that's almost three of my dogs. a lot of people chasing some cooler temperatures, maybe some shade this weekend? >> yes. especially in the inland areas. the coast stays nice and comfortable, and dublin, that's where we will have some warmer air, but we're all clear, and starting out fairly mild this morning. a lot of people up and out the door. if you're headed to the pleasant hill b.a.r.t. station, expect some mid-60s, and it's not going to be as humid as yesterday but you're probably still feeling some of that humidity this morning. we're going to be at 67 degrees at 8:00, and then 76 degrees at 10:00. it's going to be heating up as we go into early afternoon with our south bay high temperature morgan hill reaching 90 degrees. we'll also see a high of 90 in milpitas today and up to 91 in walnut creek. hayward reaching 82, and some upper 60s in half moon bay.
5:18 am
san mateo reaching 80 degrees. san francisco mostly in the upper 60s, and lower 70s, and the north bay napa today reaching 89. santa rosa up to 87 degrees. so we have high pressure that's just sitting right over the bay area, and it will slowly move over the weekend, in fact it gets even hotter as we approach the end of the weekend, as we get more of a northerly wind, as that high pressure moves just to the west of us, and that keeps us from really getting an onshore wind flow, so it's going to be heating up especially along the coastline and expect some warm temperatures out there tomorrow, if you're going to the a's and the giants game. the bay bridge series is going to reach into the mid-70s at the time the game starts but then cool off nicely fort evening. our seven-day forecast looks like this, a lot of 90s over the next few days. our temperatures staying on the high side and peaking on monday. we see some 80s in the forecast, and that's actually cooling off, but still well above normal, and
5:19 am
for san francisco, we're looking at some upper 60s and low 70s over the next several days there. at times the clouds and the fog moves in, but it looks like we'll see a little bit more fog early tomorrow morning, highs reaching 69 degrees. headed over to mike, you've been tracking a new update and now more info on the crash on highway 101. >> that's right. as we look at the south bay, this portion, silicon valley just fine. here is highway 101, typical at speed through san jose, coming in to san jose out of south county we have this unexpectedly slow drive northbound. the update we have from the chp is the crash involving the motorcycle and the rider everything and everyone off to the center divide so now it's a distraction. you see speeds right there going from red to orange, starting to improve, as you are passing by dunn toward the crash, just shy of cochrane. the backup continues to build almost five miles of slowing, unexpected as you travel north past san martin avenue, out of san martin and into morgan hill for north 101. everything else here on this map north of san jose looks great.
5:20 am
this crash here is reported in lanes north 880 right around 23rd. we'll track that. it should quickly get to the shoulder. the travel times just great, headed through the maze, toward the bay bridge. back to you. >> thanks, mike. coming up here on "day in the bay," back to school has been happening the past few weeks, parents, teachers, students, listen up to this question. should disruptive students not be expelled? there's a pending lawsuit calling for just that. up next, we're going to tell you how far it's debated through the california legislature. check out this photo i'm sharing on instagram last night. i watched laura anchor the 5:00 and 6:00 news while making din per. i had breakfast with her and din we are her. taco tuesday. >> but it was thursday, okay. >> you get a little behind when you're a busy mom. follow me on facebook, twitter and instagram. thank you for watching "today in the bay."

5:24 am
is expected in court. it is focused on giving christhian rivera a speedy trial. earlier a judge granted delay on whether his alleged confession will be allowed as evidence during his trial. tibbetts attended the university of iowa. she had gone out for a jog when she disappeared. that case sparked political backlash when it was learned that that suspect is undocumented. destructive students might soon get a break in california where it comes to punishment. a bill is one step closer to the governor's desk. it would cover kindergarten through middle school students. it would ban suspensions for disobedience and prevent students of any grade from being expelled for that reason. this week, state assembly approved it. now the state senate will hear it. a $30,000 theft turns into a high-speed chase. that's what deputies say happened yesterday in santa cruz. this started when someone noticed two men breaking into a
5:25 am
family cycling center. this is surveillance video after deputies say the thieves made off with bikes and a rental van. deputies spotted them a short time later and chased them into aptos. the suspects then ditched the van and made a run for it but deputies caught up with them. a follow-up for you now on a fight to keep milpitas theater company performing. >> center stage has used the city's community center theater for seven years but this summer the city didn't renew their contract. a resolution is now in the works. the city says it's doing a study to see if this is still the kind of entertainment that residents really want to see at their community center. it is possible that the show also go on until the study is complete. >> this is my second family, so it would be sad to see it go away, but i'm really hoping that these meetings and all these talks with the city are going to help us get there. >> the city provides about $75,000 a year to put on productions but the city council will not make a final decision
5:26 am
until october and that's just for the contract. 5:25 for you right now. a quick day at the ball park, i'm talking about 12 minutes of baseball, start to finish, that's what happened yesterday when boston and kansas city picked up a game suspended two weeks ago due to weather. the game had been tied and it could have kept going, but a walk-off base hit for boston ended it in just one inning to draw fans all kids got in for free and adults had to pay $5, plus hotdogs were only $1. >> i'd watch a lot more baseball if they were only 12 minutes long. >> and the hotdogs were $1. >> yes. coming up next top stories. >> the political world descending upon san francisco. coming up a live report from the presidential candidates who are in for a major democratic event and who is not coming. and all new this morning, we're getting a new never before seen look at how large google's future downtown campus is going
5:27 am
to be, and how it all maps out. we'll show you the map, next. and forget retirement. this bay area world war ii veteran still working hard at 98 years old. up next, how long he says he plans to keep it going. and looking live at the bay bridge toll plaza, the sun is not up yet, but the traffic is already starting to build. mike inouye is in the traffic center, but he's dashing back to the studio to help you get out the door. you know when you're at ross

5:30 am
and good morning to you. welcome to "today in the bay." a live look for you at sfo, when it all begins. we're going to keep it going right here on "today in the bay." thanks so much for joining us this morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. some adventures begin at sfo, some adventures begin right with a cup of coffee this morning. kari, we're taking our coffee iced. >> i jt wald over here from drinking my coffee this morning. >> it's so hot in here, why? >> it's not hot in here. i don't know what you're talking about. >> it is hot in here! >> we're in the mid-60s as you head out the door, and at least we have a refreshing start to the day in palo alto. we'll be at 63 degrees and then at 10:00 we're at 73 degrees. at noon 83 there, so it's going to be warming up with to pa llo alto reaching 87. these temperatures basically matching where we were yesterday.
5:31 am
95 in antioch and 87 today in santa rosa. we'll get a closer look at this and weekend events coming up. mike, you have a problem for the drive through oakland. >> that's right, we talked about that crash on the nimitz. it sounded like things should move quickly from the lanes but they have not, and now we see the slowing, things jamming up north past the coliseum shy of high street around the bend to about 29th. that's a pretty good distance ads folks are traveling through the area. now you see that bit of slowing westbound 580 completely clear as is the rest of your approach toward the bay bridge. the backup at the toll plaza because the metering lights are on, but this may hold some folks up. everything else looks fine, smooth and south of there but we have that issue still going on for morgan hill. we'll show that to you again coming up. decision 2020, the battle 2020 for the white house converges on the bay area in a big way. more than a dozen democratic presidential candidates are in san francisco this morning, part of a three-day national party summer convention. nbc bay area's thom jensen is live in san francisco with a
5:32 am
look at who is here and who is not and what we can expect. thom? >> reporter: and one person who is not here is former vice president joe biden, the front-runner right now, opting instead to stay closer to home in new hampshire, the first primary state. in fact, biden has been spending two days in new hampshire. he's touting his health care plan there, which he says will lower deductibles, lower premiums and prescription costs, and he will speak at a forum in dartmouth college this afternoon, hoping to get a strong foothold in that first primary state, which the primary is in february, but 13 candidates will be speaking here today, and tomorrow, including senators michael bennet, cory booker, kamala harris, amy klobuchar, bernie sanders and elizabeth warren. also attending are congressman seth muleton and tim ryan and former congressman joe sestak and former obama cabinet member heulian castro along with tom steyer, and writer marianne williamson, along went prenuit
5:33 am
with entrepreneur andrew yang. larry gerston says for the candidates who are here, the trip to the bay area is about money as much as anything else. >> the most important part is california's cash register. they'll meet, have a fund-raiser, or two or three, bring in lots of money and their work will be done. >> reporter: meanwhile the latest national democratic presidential shows former vice president with a commanding lead against the field of nearly 20 candidates, with 29% of the likely voters in a jump of nearly seven points since the last major poll. bernie sanders, who is here, polled in at 15%, and elizabeth warren close behind at 14%. mayor pete buttigieg polling at 5% in a virtual tie with kamala harris also at 5% and whose numbers are plunging down 12 points since june followed by
5:34 am
beto o'rourke, cory booker and heulian castro. the convention runs through saturday at the hilton union square. we're live in san francisco, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> anyone trying to narrow down who they will put their support behind, this is the place to be this weekend, thom, thanks. new this morning, google is unveiling its close-up look at its proposed mega campus in downtown san jose. city leaders voted earlier this year to approve an 11-acre land sale to the tech giant. so take a look at the map, the development is planned for an area near diridon station and the s.a.p. center. if you look at the map it shows us how google is going to use that land, the areas in blue all of these areas here are going to be office buildings, about 10,000 square feet of office space. the orange areas here and spread out about, those are going to be housing units. google is planning to have between 3,000 and 5,000 living space there is on the campus, and the purple areas represent hotel space and also retail
5:35 am
buildings as well. the company says it plans to employ about 25,000 people at that new site. however, neighborhood groups are hoping that perhaps there might be more jobs than that. some neighborhoods though say also they are against the plan. they're worried low-income residents will be forced out. 5:35 and some moments of terror for kids and parents during what had been a routine youth football practice in hayward. >> there was a shooting at my son's football practice just now. >> cell phone video taken by a mother, seconds after shots were fired yesterday. it happened at sorendale park behind tennison high school. a 17-year-old was hit by the gunfire. he is expected to survive but one parent says three pop warner teams were practicing along with the cheer squad. >> we heard a gunshot and we looked, girls were screaming. >> we were practicing and coaches just told us to like hide.
5:36 am
>> three men were seen running from a park restroom after that shooting but so far police have not announced any arrests. happening now, firefighters appear to be making headway on a wildfire threatening homes near lake shasta. the mountain fire started yesterday morning, north of redding. as of last night, it was 20% contained with about 600 acres burned. the fire did destroy one structure. it's threatening hundreds of other homes, though still. we met one family who lost their home to a fire a decade ago in san ramon, and they briefly found themselves reliving that same nightmare in shasta county. >> i was upset at the beginning but i'm a lot calmer now, knowing that my house is still standing. >> late last night, authorities started letting evacuees into some areas, back into their homes but the situation is said to be fluid and some areas still have no power this morning. in contra costa county, a serial arsonist still on the loose after setting fire to a car with a woman trapped inside. the story we first brought you
5:37 am
yesterday here on "today in the bay." and this morning, we're getting a good look at a person of interest. take a look at this photo police releasing this of the man you see right here. police don't know if he's connected to the car arson. they just want to ask him questions. here is another picture. this shows the burned out car. police say that woman was sleeping inside when someone torched the car in a parking lot along san pablo avenue. she had to break the window to escape and suffered severe burns. it was one of the latest in a slew of arsons in el cerrito and richmond areas in the last few days. most of those fires were small, set to bushes as well as garbage bins. 5:37 right now. it is friday, meaning a lot of people looking forward to some r&r this weekend. >> not to mention relief the work week is over but one man is proving even at 98, he doesn't need a day off necessarily. he is doing his thing. this is benny pacheco working at a new jersey supermarket two days a week, when he bags groceries for a few hours.
5:38 am
he's a world war ii veteran who says the army taught him all about hard work. this week he received a red, white and blue themed party for his 98th birthday but said he's not done yet. >> i never expect anything. i'm goingor 100. if i make 100, i think i'll be satisfied. >> i would say. mr. piceto says he first developed his sense of gratitude decades ago back in the war when his plane was shot down and he survived. he was saying he's really spry. he moves like a cat. >> mike, i think we need to take note. >> mr. piceto we want to thank him. we're grateful for having folks like him who served our country. over here folks you're not grateful because we have this slowing in the south bay. two spots where we unexpectedly slow, north 101 as you approach concord, north of east dunne we have the crash in the center divide, a motorcycle is
5:39 am
