>> the crowd has been lined up around 6th avenue and 52nd street there's lizzo. lizzo doing her sound check right now. >> hair toss, check your nails the concert will start in a few minutes. she's a phenomenon in music right now. i think we were a little surprised. >> we were. >> people wrapped around the block here in new york city. we'll get to that in a moment. let's start with the breaking news. scary situation. hawaii airlines plane makes an emergency landing when the cabin filled with smoke. blayne alexander is on the story. >> reporter: the flight took off from oakland and was almost at its destination when passengers started seeing that smoke inside the cabin. overnight, airline officials are pinpointing what they say led to those terrifying moments >> please be seated. stay low, breathe through your clothes. >> reporter: the emergency call came shortly before landing. the cabin of hawaiian airlines flight 47 from oakland to honolulu suddenly started to fill with smoke.

>> all of a sudden, the cabin just filled up with smoke. so we just all had to kind of go like this to breathe. >> reporter: terrified passengers snapped these pictures as the plane was forced to make an emergency landing a runway shut down first responders standing at the ready, as crews deployed emergency slides, rushing passengers to safety >> it is something you never think you're going to do, but you go very fast the firemen are down there catching you and helping you out. >> reporter: the evacuation itself took less than 60 seconds. >> the evacuation was done orderly, and i think it's the best result we could have asked for. >> reporter: seven people were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation amazingly, of the 191 passengers and crew on board, no serious injuries >> there was a few bumps and bruises that you would see, but nothing major. >> reporter: later, the airline offered this explanation for the smoke.

saying, a seal failed in the aircraft's left engine, causing oil to leak on to hot parts of the plane's engine and air-conditioning pressurization system a terrifying ending for passengers beginning a trip to paradise guys, of course, in an emergency, you might expect to see those oxygen masks deploy inside the cabin well, that didn't happen in this case the airline says they did not want to pump oxygen into the cabin in case there was a fire so they chose not to deploy them but the crews did wear protective masks very scary moments. >> thankfully everybody is okay. thank you. after a dizzying week of domestic headlines, president trump turns his focus to foreign policy as he heads to the g7 summit in france today nbc's white house correspondent kristen welker has the latest on that kristen, good morning. >> reporter: craig, good morning to you president trump is gearing up for what could be a contentious g7 summit.

for context, these gatherings are typically a chance for the leaders of the world's largest democracies to come together and to look for common ground. but as president trump pushes his america first foreign policy, deep divisions are already looming large. this morning, president trump is preparing to travel to the serene seaside resort in france for his third g7 summit, but there's already diplomatic discord on the horizon at the top of the list, the president is pushing for russia to be readmitted to the group. >> we spend a lot of time talking about russia at those meetings, and they're not there. i think it would be a good thing this russia were there, so we could speak directly. >> reporter: but the summit host, french president emmanuel macron is already pushing back, arguing russia violated international law when it annexed crimea in 2014 and can't be readmitted until there's progress that's sure to be a hot topic when those two leaders meet. and all eyes will be on another meeting, the president's first

face-to-face with britain's prime minister boris johnson since he took office in july he is an outspoken, populous leader, often compared to president trump. mr. trump offering high praise. >> i spoke with boris johnson. i think he's going to be a great prime minister i think he's going to do a fantastic job. >> reporter: other key topics at the summit will include recent provocations by iran and north korea, and the economy, with fears of a global recession deepening. on thursday, president trump was asked if he's concerned about revelations job growth was slower than originally reported. >> the job numbers have been really good. we have unemployment at a level that it hasn't been at for many, many years fantastic numbers. the economy has been really fantastic.

>> kristen, the last few g7 summits, they've been a pretty tense affair between president trump and other world leaders. reasonable to expect it is going to be the same this time >> reporter: oh, absolutely reasonable, craig. in fact, at last year's summit, mr. trump stunned allies by pulling out of a joint statement just hours after agreeing to sign it. take a look at this photo. remember this one? this was captured during one discussion this was an epic stare down between mr. trump and german chancellor angela merkel it captured the deep differences between the president and other leaders on a range of topics, from trade to the environment. things are so tense this year, president macron has already scrapped the idea of a joint statement. craig and savannah >> kristen welker from the white house, thank you. another story that's being closely watched by the world, the wildfires ranging in the amazon rain forest and wreaking havoc across south america there is worry the fires will impact the entire planet kerry sanders joins us with the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah the fires have been burning for

three plus weeks not only are they devastating but their cause, controversial this morning, growing calls for protection of the amazon rain forest, which has been burning for nearly a month france's president macron calling it an international crisis, tweeting, our house is burning. this year, there have been close to 73,000 fires in brazil, up a whopping 83% since last year more than half in the amazon the smoke plume from the wildfires so vast, it can be seen from space. nasa scientists worrying about the impact on air quality worldwide and climate change the amazon rain forest covers more than 2 million square miles, about 2/3 the size of the continental u.s. the cause of the fires, a subject of controversy brazil's president, who has advocated developing part of the region, saying the international community should not get involved pointing to non-governmental groups as possibly setting the blazes environmental activists say farmers set the fires to clear the land, inspired by the

president's leadership the impact of the fires could be devastating. scientists call the amazon rain forest the lungs of the world. it releases 20% of the planet's oxygen any reduction could add to climate change and the outcry on social media has been huge. with the hashtag pray for the amazon trending, oscar winner and environmental activist leonardo dicaprio speaking out in a series of spokes on instagram. the lungs of the earth are in claims singer cabaeo saying, we're literally destroying our miracle of a home. and gisele saying, we can't close our eyes to what is happening in the amazon. >> reporter: the amazon is a world treasure >> kerry, thank you. a tragic elevator accident at an apartment high-rise here in new york is making headlines

this morning kathy park joins us for this this is terrible. >> this is a shocking story, guys good morning this happened as people were leaving for the morning. in an instant, authorities say the elevator moved, and a man got pinned between the elevator car and wall and couldn't get out. we are not going to show you that moment, but some of the video you're about to see may still be disturbing. >> reporter: this morning, a horrific nightmare and a search for answers. sam waisbren was killed thursday after the elevator he was riding in at this 23-story luxury building in manhattan suddenly dropped. surveillance video shows another man is seen exiting the elevators just before it malfunctions as the car begins to fall, waisbren tries to make an escape. >> as he was exiting, the car moved, trapping the patient. >> reporter: six other people were on the elevator but no other injuries were reported that specific elevator had not

been the subject of any formal complaints in recent years, but the building's other elevator was cited for problems as recently as may. horrified residents claim there have been issues for years >> they're always down people are getting stuck honestly, it is more about safety i don't know if i'll feel comfortable putting my kids in an elevator here again. >> reporter: the new york city department of buildings said in a statement that it is investigating this inciden aggressively and will take appropriate enforcement actions. waisbren shared an apartment with his girlfriend and worked in sales for a software company. his heartbroken father devastated. >> fantastic boy he was full of life. very, very sensitive, conscientious. fun-loving million friends. everyone loved him. >> tragic story. we reached out to building management but are waiting for a response waisbren's father said it was a disregard for safety

the department of buildings is still trying to figure out what exactly went wrong >> thank you, kathy. sounds like a fantastic young man. a warning for all parents. new police body camera footage shows the rescue of a baby accidentally left in a hot car and the arrest of the child's mother she's facing serious charges here's correspondent miguel almaguer >> i'm freaking out. i'm sorry. >> reporter: before stacey holly was arrested -- >> i don't know. i honestly don't know how it happened >> reporter: -- she told police in goodyear, arizona, she forgot her five-month-old daughter was in the backseat of her car because she was distracted as she went shopping with family. >> we went to target and didn't look in the backseat i mean, we didn't do it on purpose, obviously >> reporter: captured on body camera by police, the 37-year-old mother was with her

sister and daughter when she realized the baby was strapped in the car seat as temperatures soared to 102 degrees in june. >> we left the baby in the car >> reporter: as paramedics rushed the baby to the hospital, officers were shocked the child was in stable condition. >> i can't believe the kid survived that long. >> reporter: the baby, they say, was left inside the sweltering car for 50 minutes >> it's a long time. little, little baby. >> reporter: charged with one count of child abuse and one count of endangerment, holly pled not guilty, saying this to police. she said this during interrogation. >> i think the people who do it, who you see on tv, oh, my god, how stupid are they to leave their kids in the car, and then it happens >> reporter: with vehicles heating up, up to 20 degrees in ten minutes, so far this year 35 children have died in hot cars police in arizona say this mother was lucky she didn't lose her little girl. >> there was no reason it just happened >> reporter: a reminder, one

today with a sunny start over the south bay, headed up to 89 degrees. 94 will be the high in livermore, as well as concord. 97 in clearlake but 87 in santa rosa, and san francisco today in the lower 70s. so we will still have a wide range in temperatures. the valleys reaching into the low 90s today and tomorrow. some mid-90s for the end of the weekend and our temperatures peak on monday, reaching 97 degrees and coming back down to the 80s, while san francisco stays in the upper 60s and lower 70s. let's get an update on the commute now from mike. >> kari, it's friday which says enough but i have one issue to call out amongst the easier drives here. we have southbound 880 a crash just moved to the right shoulder, a commuter van is involved as well as a bus so two larger vehicles. i haven't heard about any delays for any systems and no injuries to report there. we'll track that. the rest of the bay shows a nice drive. a little build, slowing through berkeley west 80. this is the richmond side of the bridge, sunny and over here

they're accused of hacking into email systems of businesses and individuals and diverting money. victims were targeted in the u.s. and around the world. some lost hundreds of thousands of dollars this morning, the hunt is on for six more defendants believed to be on the run here in the united states nearly 30 people were injured overnight in a train crash north of sacramento. officials say a light rail train collided with a test train just outside the city limits. 13 people were transported to nearby hospitals 14 others treated there at the scene. it is unclear what caused the trains to collide, but officials say it will likely cause delays during this morning's commute. now the latest on a case in the connecticut father charged of killing a worker in anguilla. he was there for a brief court a i experience once again for claiming his innocence nbc's morgan chesky joins us with details morgan >> reporter: savannah, craig, good morning

this is a case that has rocked this small island nation, typically known for tourism and not high-profile crime cases with this manslaughter investigation now headed to court, it's left a lot of folks here wondering if they'll ever really know what happened inside scott hapgood's hotel room mr. hapgood, how does it feel to be here today? an investment banker charged with killing a hotel employee says he is eager for his day in court. >> we all want the same thing, justice.

for me, that means proving my innocence. >> reporter: hapgood reading a statement after his hearing. >> we want the evidence that proves my innocence. >> reporter: the 44-year-old was charged with manslaughter in april in the death of kenny mitchel. he said the employee fixed up unannounced, claiming to fix a broken sink. once inside, he said mitchel tried to rob him at knife point. he fought back in self-defense to protect his two young daughters who he sent for help. >> self-defense is self-defense. self-defense too far leads to a death. >> reporter: clark, one of the first hotel workers to respond, describes what he saw when he rushed to the room. >> mr. hapgood's left forearm was across kenny's neck/chin area this way, and mr. hapgood held mr. kenny's right hand across the body, like this. >> reporter: the death certificate showed kenny died of asphyxiation a toxicology report shows mitchel had cocaine, marijuana in his system. >> i wish him good luck with his life >> reporter: hapgood acknowledging he'd be angry if

he believed the rumors spread about the case, but he insists they're not true. >> the stories you read and heard are not what happened. someday, i'll be able to tell the real story in a legal setting. the sooner the day comes, the better >> reporter: we've learned the next court appearance for hapgood is set for september 9th. his legal team says he'll fly back for that in anguilla. many people on the island say he shouldn't have been granted bail and never should have been able to go back to the u.s. >> morgan chesky, thank you. we will switch gears and get a check of the weather from dylan. you're looking in the caribbean, aren't you >> keeping an eye on the tropics because there is a disturbance near the bahamas this could develop into a tropical depression going to the weekend or early next week there is a 30% chance of it developing in the next two days, but a 60% chance of it developing into something in the next five days just keep in mind whether it becomes a named storm or not, it is still running into very warm water. that could be enough to produce just torrential downpours. florida has already seen more than twice the amount of rain it normally gets in a typical august this area of low pressure, no matter what it is officially, will bring heavy rain fall to florida on saturday.

good morning. 8:26. i'm marcus washington. police in san jose are looking for the driver who plowed a truck into more than a dozen cars parked along a city street around 11:00 last night on moore park avenue. witnesses say after hearing the chaos they went outside to see the truck overturned and the driver already out of the vehicle running from the scene. some of the cars that were hit sustained extensive damage. one witness says he saw one person being transported to the hospital. we haven't been able to learn the extent of their injuries. right now let's look at the morning commute. mike inouey. >> most of the bay shows the typical friday build which is at its peak or getting there over the next few minutes.
