if they do that, we will tax their wine or doing something else. >> kelly, punctuating another headline from the last week. we learned that president trump spoke to denmark's prime minister by phone friday. the first time speak since he canceled his trip there among the backlash over the interest of buying greenland. what more do we know? >> reporter: well, the president asked about this before he left for his trip here to france. he described it as a great conversation. maybe, peter, that is trying to diffuse the tension. he also earlier referred to the prime minister as a nasty woman for her comments about his desire to buy greenland. maybe trying to tamp that down. denmark is not participating in the g7. the way for the president to send a signal he is calming things down on that front. cancelling the trip for the end of the minuonth is a sore point. and may be good before meeting

other leaders here. the comments about wine and france and possibly taxing it got attention from the european union. if president trump plans to tax french wine, they will respond. peter. >> kelly traveling with the president in france. thank you. >> let's bring in john harwood who covers washington. thank you for being here. let's take a step back at the remarkable day we witnessed. dow closed down 600 points. president trump talking tough on tariffs. on the other hand, john, he is sending out tweets mocking and making fun of the market downturn. what is the impact of this uncertainty? >> it is fueling doubts about the course of the global economy. it is not rational. yesterday, after jay powell gave his speech, markets reacted

calmly. markets did not react to china imposing the tit-for-tat tariffs on the united states. the president impulsively lashing out on twitter against powell and against china with that unusual statement that he claimed the power to order american companies to act. that was destabilizing and sent the market down 600 points for the day. the additional tariffs he put on late in the day are likely to drive markets down over the weekend when they open on monday. this is not good for the u.s. economy. it is not good for the president's chances of winning re-election in 2020. >> john, let's talk about what you referenced. extraordinary directive that the president delivered by twitter yesterday. he wrote, our great american companies are hereby ordered to immediately start looking for alternative to china including bringing your companies home. the president claims he has the

power, the authority to do that. does he? >> well, i suppose if the president were to decide to declare a national emergency, you will find out he would test the limits of his power. as of this moment, nobody takes that statement seriously. the president and rhetoric is extreme and that is completely contrary to how other u.s. presidents have served the nation and run the economy. it is odd coming at a time when the republican party and president trump are accusing democrats of socialism and government control of the economy. where the president is asserting his right to do that. i don't think anyone is expecting the president to actually assert those emergency powers and test the question. for now we have to wait and see. >> we certainly will, john. against this back drop of the g7 gets under way.

u.s. allies are concerned of this escalating trade war. fears of potential global recession. some leaders will downplay the issues with donald trump. what can we expect to come of this summit, john? >> not much. i think the best hope, kristen is no further damage is done. the president has a penchant for blowing up international gatherings with the disruptive statements and lashing out at people he thinks are not sufficient to him and to the united states. with much of the world slowing, growth is also slowing in the united states. most economic forecasters put chances of a recession in 2020 around 50%. those fears go up if the market continues to tank because that has a self fulfilling prophecy. more problems around the world

means more problems within the united states. the united states can't afford to have an economic downturn. >> allr-connected. john, thank you so much for your insights. and another topic likely to get another attention at the g-7, the devastating wildfires burning across the amazon in brazil we just showed you, as we await the president's arrival there stepping off the tarmac momentarily. the world's largest rain forest which some describe as the planet's lungs produce 20% of the earth's oxygen and protesters around the world are demonstrating, in front of brazilian's embassy, urging that country's leaders to do more to stop the fires. nbc sara harmon has more. good morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning. this morning, brazil's armed forces will start deploying to the amazon. after the president took the rare step of authorizing the military to help. this environmental crisis is fast becoming a political one as well. europe is threatening punitive measures, if brazil doesn't get this blaze under control.

said to be doing well after completing a new cancer treatment. it's the second time in less than a year that she has battled and won against the disease. more now from justice correspondent pete williams. >> reporter: the supreme court says justice ruth bader ginsburg intends to remain active after receiving three weeks of radiation treatment for a tumor on her pancreas. the court says it was detected in early july and she began the treatment august 5, as an outpatient, at memorial sloan kettering cancer center in new york. the court statement says she tolerated the treatment well, the tumor was treated definitively, and there is no evidence of disease elsewhere in her body. medical experts say the goal was to completely eliminate the tumor. >> she will likely have multiple scans and blood tests after completion of therapy to assess response to the treatment and see how the therapy went. >> reporter: she had surgery for pancreatic cancer ten years ago and treated for colon cancer. in december, she had part of her lungs removed after doctors found three cancerous spots. while she was getting this

latest treatment, she met the cast backstage at a broadway play, and met kate mckinnen of saturday night live who sometimes plays a version of the justice. after the latest cancer was discovered, ginsburg says she will stay on the court as long as she is able. >> you have to take it year by year. i know i'm okay, i was okay this last term, i expect to be okay next term, and after that, we'll just have to see. >> justice ginsburg, who is 86, has nearly a dozen public events on her calendar for next month, and the court says she is not canceled any of them. for "today," pete williams, nbc news, washington. now to a florida jury that has decided the fate of a white man who shot and killed an unarmed black man during an argument that started over a parking space. nbc has the reaction to the guilty verdict. good morning. >> reporter: this was a decision that definitely did not come easy. the jury deliberated well into the night before finding michael

drejka guilty reigniting a national debate over stand your ground laws and we do want to warn you, some of the video you are about to see is disturbing. >> the defendant is guilty of manslaughter as charged. >> this morning, michael drejka is in custody, after a jury convicted him of manslaughter late friday in the death of markeis mcglockton. >> we're thankful that the jury got it right. we're thankful that the jury saw what we saw, saw what everybody saw in that video. >> reporter: the video of the fatal parking lot confrontation, the key piece of evence in the three-day trial. >> i submit to you he is a parking lot vigilante. >> reporter: jurors saw this taped interview with detectives, where drejka described the moment he drew his gun after being pushed to the ground by mcglockton the argument stemming from the misuse of a handicapped parking spot. >> he stepped toward me and that was that. >> reporter: mcglockton's girlfriend sharing from the stand as drejka began harassing as she waited with her children inside a parked car. >> i didn't know who this

strange man was, he was yelling and pointing and telling me where i should park. >> reporter: it was when mcglockton came out that the incident escalated. initially drejka was not arrested because of florida's stand your ground law which allows a person to use deadly force against a threat with no requirement to retreat. >> he did what he thought he had to do in the moment and split second timing, given that he was attacked. >> reporter: after more than six hours of deliberation, the jury found drejka guilty. >> although we know that there are some appeal issues, we will deal with that on the back end, but for right now, the jurors of the county have spoken and we respect their decision. >> for the family of markeis mcglockton the decision brought about closure. >> my family can rest now and start putting the pieces back together and move on. >> are there any next steps for drejka and the legal team before he is sentenced here? >> reporter: we did hear from drejka's legal team after the verdict last night. they say they do plan to appeal. meanwhile, his sentencing is set

for october, and drejka does face a maximum of up to 30 years in prison. >> morgan, thanks. new information this morning about the suicide of a accused sex trafficker jeffrey epstein. on friday the department of justice sent a letter to the house judiciary committee acknowledging that a psychologist took epstein off suicide watch shortly before he took his own life. attorney general william barr removed the acting director of the federal prison system after epstein's death. investigators are revealing new details on what caused dale earnhardt jr.'s plane to crash. the right landing gear collapsed and the wing hit the runway as that plane bounced three times upon landing last week. earnhardt, his wife, their baby, plus the two pilots, all fortunately escaped serious injury. despite bruising and swelling on his back, the semi-retired nascar driver plans to race against next saturday. look at that. the fact that they got out okay

is amazing. >> incredible. >> and he's going to race next saturday. >> i'm glad he is good. >> we will be watching indeed. dylan has a check of the forecast. dylan, how is the weekend looking? >> the weekend is looking fantastic for most areas except down near florida where a tropical type system is now making its way onshore. and it's tropical in nature. so while it could possibly develop into something like a tropical disturbance or a tropical storm over the next couple of days, for right now, it is just producing a lot of rain, down across the miami area, and will eventually bring some of that rain through the southeast as well. eventually it will take this turn to the northeast and there is again a 90% chance it could develop into an actual tropical named storm, as we go into the next five days, because water temperatures are so warm. but no matter what happens, for right now, we are going to see this bring a lot of rain to areas like miami, which is already experiencing its third wettest summer on record. this will continue to make its turn to the northeast. some of those outer bands produce tropical-like downpours through south carolina, through the coast of georgia, through

the coast of northern florida, too and the storm stays mostly out of the waters. and once it takes the turn, it will no longer be a threat to land. watch out for rip currents at the beaches. one to two inches of rain. but because it is tropical in nature, some of the downpours could be leading to brief flooding as they fall in a short period of time. another disturbance, invest 99-l, over the next five days there is a 70% chance it could develop into something as it moves over ideal conditions and good saturday morning to you. clear skies in san jose to start the morning. a different view in san francisco. mist and low clouds. currently 60 degrees. upper 50s elsewhere. this afternoon valleys upper 80s and low 90s. the trend for the weekend, a bit warmer. low 70s for tomorrow, mid-70s by monday. and look at the valleys, heating up again monday and tuesday highs back into the upper 90s.

last night it was high school varsity playing it first real home game since the camp fire. about 3,000 people packed the stadium cheering a team that has been through a lot. almost everyone on the field lost their home in the fire so last night's game meant a lot to the players and fans. >> this is home. and because we're all living in so many different places, and football is as to important to our community, to be able to all come together. >> it was emotional knowing that this could have all been gone, you know. and the resilience of these kids. >> the opposing team did something pretty remarkable, they donated their lunch money from the entire week for the team showing that this community is all together. the san jose police department is making history for the first time ever, their police chief raised the rainbow flag over his department. the community leaders say there was a time when the police doors were closed to the lgbtq

democratic economic powers will talk trade in the middle of a widening tariff fight between the u.s. and china. the president announcing on friday that he is levying new taxes on chinese goods and also demanding that the u.s. companies leave china. hours earlier, china announced its own tariffs, stocks plunged more than 600 points on the news. breaking overnight, iran announced it has test-fired a new missile. tensions have risen between the u.s. and iran ever since the trump administration pulled out of the iran nuclear deal. iran shot down a u.s. drone in june. meantime, north korea fired two missiles into the sea today. the north koreans have complained about the u.s. military exercises there with south korea. >> tragedy and panic at two different st. louis high schools. frightened students ran from a football jamboree after hearing reports that shots were fired friday night. police say multiple fights broke out during the jamboree and the event was canceled. at the same time, a deadly shooting happened at another st. louis high school jamboree, an 8-year-old girl was killed.

two teenaged boys and an adult who were with her were shot and wounded. police are asking the public to come forward with information. >> a shocker down under. here is something we haven't said in 13 years. the u.s. men's basketball team lost. it happened earlier today to australia. the aussies rallying to beat the americans 98-94. the first time the u.s. men's team has lost in a major international competition in 78 games. that's nearly 13 years, the basketball world cup, by the way, begins next week. and now, to a new turn in the jussie smollett case. a special prosecutor has been named to look into why prosecutors dropped charges against the former empire actor to claim he was a victim of a hate crime but then was accused of making the whole thing up. nbc's ron mott has the story. >> reporter: the big question this morning, could actor jussie smollett face new charges? a chicago judge has named former u.s. attorney dan webb to look into how local prosecutors

nashville, 86. a little below average. raleigh, a high of 73 degrees. dc, 80. boston, 73 as well. and then as we go into sunday, the frontal system slides farther to the south and atlanta will be close to ten degrees below average with a high of 81 degrees. and charlotte only 77. richmond virginia, only 80 degrees, and nashville, 85. four degrees below average. and going into next week, it stays cooler in the chicago area, cleveland, too and charleston, stays in the low to mid-80s. new york, chilly on monday with a high of 73. and chilly, i mean for some, that's just about perfect. and then wednesday, we right now san jose, not too cold outside. we're at 63 with clear skies and eventually upper 80s. 83 san jose, 78 in oakland. and a look at the "7-day forecast" shows temperatures climbing as get into sunday and monday. san francisco jumps into the
