showers and maybe isolated thunder for parts of the area. >> thank you. crews in contra costa county were able to quickly put out a brushfire in antioch. flames sparked along wilber and marie avenue this afternoon. firefighters say that fire threatened several homes but fortunately the flames only burned about two acres. near gilroy, a 35 acre fire was sparked this afternoon, and cal fire says the flames have been contained. fires like these have crews working to clear oupt brush. >> and the santa cruz mountains, they are creating a fire break. governor gavin newsom allotted $2 million for the project, and marianne favro has the details. >> reporter: that work is going to start tomorrow morning at 9:00, and first they are going to have a training session, and then crews will get right to

work clearing out the debris and grass. >> when the loma fire swept through the santa cruz mountains in 2016, the flames scorched more than 4,000 acres and destroyed 12 homes, which is why dennis is relieved work on a new fire break along highway 17 is set to begin tomorrow. >> just take a look at paradise and what happened up there and really and truly at the end of the day, their problem is because nobody has cleared the woods up there in 50, 75 years, and we have the same problem here. >> the fire break will run along highway 17 from los gatos to summit road, and the goal is to clear out brush 150 feet from the edge of the highway, thinning small trees, removing shrubs and hauling out deadwood but leaving the big trees. a firefighter with the volunteer fire department says often people driving on highway 17

experience a car fire and pull over near the dry brush, igniting it. he says the new fire break should help firefighters efforts to protect the community. >> just being able to control fires easier, and prevent a lot of the car fires that do happen on 17, and the cigarette butts out the window and everything else, if all that brush is cleared back it makes our job easier. >> highway 17 is the main way for people to escape a fire in the mountains, and it's making sure that's a viable option in the midst of a fire. >> there's a chance some sections of highway 17 will need to be shutdown temporarily while that work is completed. reporting live in the santa cruz mountains, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. you have a brushfire erupting in southern california tonight. right now mandatory evacuations

are in place near glendale and the 134 freeway is shutdown in both directions, and you can see heavy smoke and flames just feet from the road, dangerously close to homes. flames started about 4:30 this afternoon, and the fire has burned at least 25 acres so far. an early morning trip to check on fishing gear ended in tragedy this weekend in contra costa county, and two men went out fishing just around discovery by, and the inflatable raft they were in popped and one man swam to shore and the other man did not make it. people who live nearby spoke about their concern for the victim. >> i thought perhaps it was a training mission because i saw them every 30 minutes or so circlinack and forth, so it was hard for me to learn that there was somebody in dire need. >> the search for crews has become a recovery effort to find

his body and the coast guard said the men did not have life jackets with them. one person is dead after a head-on crash near american avenue in brentwood. investigators say the driver of this silver nissan altima was going eastbound and hit a minivan head-on after trying to pass another car. the driver of the altima died at the scene and the driver of the minivan was taken to the hospital but not seriously hurt. and witnesses described what happened moments before that deadly crash. >> a silver nissan was going eastbound behind me at a high rate of speed, and hit me and swerved into the other lane and hit the toyota van head-on. >> i am so sorry. poor man. i am sorry for his family, and it's traumatizing to see something like this. >> police shall still investigating whether drugs or

alcohol were factors in this deadly crash. a popular south bay open space remains closed after some mountain lion activity. hundreds of people were turned away from the park today. rangers were at the entrance letting people know that a family of mountain lions have been prowling the trails and getting dangerously close to people. you see them here. they are not acting normal. mountain lions are not unusual for the area, and these cats do not appear to be afraid of people. >> it's for the safety of themselves and the animals in the park, and again we appreciate their patience while we work through this process. >> rangers are monitoring mountain lion behavior, and they recommend checking the park's website to see when that park is back open. a flight to hawaii out of sfo only got one-third of the way before pilots had to turn around. pilots returned to san francisco this afternoon because of a mechanical issue. united said the plane landed

great mall. this is new video of people running out of the mall, and it looks like it's cell phone video, and dozens of people are tweeting about the great mall right now. some of them still inside the building. we have a crew on the way and will continue to update you on the story and figure out what is going on at the scene. a bizarre story out of southern california a. police officer makes a call saying he was shot by a sniper in los angeles sheriff's parking lot setting off a massive manhunt for the shooter, and now it's all a hoax. >> the deputy was frantic. the call? he was under fire. a snyder, iper taking aim from apartment building. they locked down this apartment

building and a nearby school for hours. the deputy was rushed to the hospital. he fortunately was wearing a vest, and the vest saved his life, but the bullet did deflect into his shoulder. >> the only thing? there was no wound. there was no shooter. turns out the deputy made the whole thing up. >> the reported sniper assault was fabricated by the deputy. >> the department said he eventually confessed, the two bullet holes in his uniform. >> he caused the holes in his uniform shirt by cutting it with a knife. there was no sniper and no shots fired, completely fabricated. >> the department's disgust captured in this facebook post, embarrassed, furious, unbelievable. tonight the 21-year-old rookie still in train something out of a job and under investigation. as his former colleagues want to know why he launched the lie that brought a city street to a

standstill. >> it was a dangerous moment caught on live television, a lightning strike hit the pga tour championship in atlanta hraeing six people hit, and now one of the vick sums speakitims out about what happened. it happened during the third round of the final event of the fedex cup playoff. a huge lightning strike hit the top of this tree on the course near the 16th tee. fortunately, there were no serious injuries but one man that was injured described what happened. >> all of a sudden there was a boom to my left, and it took me a split second to register that lightning had struck, and it turns out i am way luckier than what could have been, it could have been a really catastrophic event. >> absolutely lucky. round three was suspended for the day. it did continue, though, this

morning. andrew luck sent shock waves from indianapolis to the bay area when he suddenly announced his retirement from the national football league, and check out the reaction from colts fans after he announced it during the pre-season. a lot of fans were booing him. many of the players are condemning the fans' reaction, and luck said he could not do it anymore. he said he is in pain, and the only way for him to move forward in his life meant no football. luck spoke about the fan backlash. >> i would be lying if i didn't say i heard the reaction. yeah, it hurt. i will be honest. it hurt. >> luck ranks as the colt's third all-time leader in passing yards. hong kong police pulled their guns during a violent

clash with protesters today. some of the video down there of the scuffle between the protesters and the police. protesters called the police gangsters, and they chased them down a street following an earlier standoff with the officers. this happened after police used tear-gas to clear a large group of protesters who were on the street. the pro democracy protests have been rocking hong kong for three months and plunged the city into the biggest political vices since the 1997 hand over from china to britain. over in paris a celebration took place on the 75th anniversary of the city's liberation from the occupation. the route retraced the tanks in that country. 2 million parisians asesembled

every day. >> according to a report by market research firm, the global embedded system market is projected to be worth $214 billion by next year. this is a small version of an air filtration system that is in a lab they are working with right now. >> you don't want dirty air to come out ever, and this computer will allow that to happen. >> they hacked devices inside the fan's controller not only forcinging the dirty air in the wrong direction, but ultimately shutting it down and it goes up in smoke. >> that's awesome. >> but he says the issue goes way beyond this demo. the team recently uncovered a major vulnerability in more than 100 devices made by cisco. the largest manufacturer of network equipment. according to red balloon, we are talking about a potential attack that could sell for millions. they let cisco know what they found and the company published this critical advisory. cisco turned down a request for

an on-camera interview, and instead releasing a statement saying in part, cisco is committed to transparency and is not aware of any malicious use of the vulnerability described in this advisory, and fixes are available for half of the affected products. we wanted to find out what other industry leaders are doing to protect their embedded devices and reached out to hp and huawei. both companies were not part of red balloon's finding. hp is the largest manufacturer of printers, which contain embedded devices. andy rhodes is the head of hp's commercial pc business, and his company's advertising claims to have the world's most secure printers. >> we put this special code into the printer so it's always looking for malware and devices. >> huawei did not agree to an interview or provide comment. i am andrea day, cnbc, business

same range tomorrow and if not maybe closer to 100 degrees. dublin, you can see out towards the tri-valley, 95 today and the inland east bay, your a/c will keep going tonight, and then 84 out at the airport. we are not getting the ocean air-conditioning, and obviously san francisco, oakland and hayward, you are seeing the cooling but you are not seeing it inland at this hour. again, a weak breeze out of the west and into the inland east bay. for the morning, patchy fog and low clouds. inland temperatures are going to be in the 60s, and hilltop temperatures in the east bay may be in the 70s tomorrow morning. cloud cover wise, not much inland. most of the clouds we do see will be out on the coast, as we see tomorrow's temperatures rising, similar to today but likely the south bay starts to trend hotter. we had mid-90s in morgan hill

today, and 97 tomorrow, and downtown san jose close to 90 degrees. similar temperatures to what we saw today in the tri-valley, and up in the peninsula temperatures, 60s and 70s, and san francisco, at least just south of downtown should see 70s, 60s on the beaches and out towards the north bay, highs in the mid-80s to 90s. high pressure started to strengthen today and should peak around monday and tuesday, but the item to watch, and fortunately it's an increase in humidity, and the tropical storm is falling apart, and look at the moisture streaming northward towards southern california and eventually towards the bay area. right now the future cast is not painting any measurable rain, but you see the green offshore and that's going to be a surge of extra mugginess and humidity, and highs in the 90s, so it will feel comfortable outside. notice the future cast doesn't have any measurable rainfall,

but we are not out of the woods. sometimes the patterns can create dry lightning, and that means you don't see rain at ground level. watch out for that tuesday. as you see the temperatures warm to start the week. spare the air day, too, for the east bay, and you could see another one on tuesday but the humidity will get peoples' attention, and we will have to look for scattered showers and dry lightning. when we come back, we will update you on all the information we can about what is going on in milpitas at the great mall. we are getting a lot of video like this. police are saying stay away. we will have everything we have got right after the break.

morning. what if there were a trail from san francisco across the peninsula and straight to the pacific ocean? well, that is exactly what one group is trying to create and they are about halfway there, it sounds like. it's the bay to sea trail, and it will be about 40 miles, and several environmental groups have teamed up to make it happen. the trail would connect urban areas and this area. you see it right there, the lgbtq community and supporters celebrated the pride parade. it was at the plaza to cesar chavez park. the theme this year is diversity in action with a focus on celebrating the transgender community. >> i think it's another big step, because it's just making

the gay community feel welcome, and just knowing that we support them. >> tonight there's a '70s disco theme festival to commemorate the stonewall riots. it will be the first in the series of planned meetings between the san francisco police department and lgbtq community taking place tomorrow in the city, and it's being called reflection. the meeting marks the 53rd anniversary of the compton's cafeteria riot. it helped inspire the lgbtq liberation movement. the lgbtq community will share their experiences with the community. and then fairfield police department gave us this video showing drivers racing and spinning in circles on friday night, and they not only saw them from above but from street

level. two cars ended up being towed and one person was also towed, he was arrested, and police want other potential reckless drivers to know there's zero tolerance for this kind of activity in fairfield. there's no secret americans are deeply divided but a new poll puts those sentiments into numbers, and 70% of americans are angry at the political system. 56% feel anxious and uncertain about the economy, and just 27% reported feeling confident their children's generation will be better off than their own. the poll also asked about defining values, and hard work remains very important, and a few americans named religion, having children and patriotism, compared to 20 years ago. and then the 2020 presidential campaign is set to be the most extensive in history, eclipsing the $2 billion spent two years ago.

night long. walnut creek, it's 87 degrees. that alone would be a pretty warm high temperature. we had a high of 87. speaking of walnut creek and livermore, these are locations tomorrow with unhealthy air qualities, and we have a spare the air in effect. it's the inland east bay, and bay and coast, too, the sea breeze will see moderate to air quality tomorrow. temperatures in the inland, still in the 80s. we should see low clouds we are seeing now in san francisco, locally in the morning but staying along the coastline for the afternoon. valleys set to climb with the temperatures once again, and the morning, not all that cold, upper 50s bay side. look at our temperatures tomorrow. the trend will be upper 90s for those east bay valleys, and may see close to 100 degrees around

brentwood for tomorrow. ukiah, 100 degrees. and close to 80 in oakland. high pressure peaking as we get into tomorrow and as you see the band of high clouds in the south, that's what is left of the tropical storm that is no longer with us but the moisture associated with it has made a run to the north up to the coast of southern california. you see that big blob of green, and that's mid level moisture. that's the sticky feeling you will have in the air as you get into tuesday and wednesday. look how it surges up the coast. this is combined with future cast, and we are not seeing showers or measurable rainfall, and by bay area standards, when the dew point temperatures get into the 60s like we think they will on wednesday, that will feel like the tropics outside. right now unfortunately, it looks like we might see some thunderstorms around the sierra, at least enough with rainfall which would be a good thing. a lot of times at the mid level moisture, you have to watch out

we continue to track breaking news out of milpitas, and a lot of police activity at the great mall, and a lot of people running away from the mall and crazy reports on social media. police are saying no shots have been fired. this is new video of police officers heading to the mall in just the past few minutes. there have been a lot of mall goers posting videos like this on social media, snapchat and twitter, and a lot saying this was an active shooter situation, and milpitas police confirmed there were no shots fired. we do have a crew on the way. the crew will gather more information. they will have new information for us at 11:00 and we will update you as soon as we get those details.
