tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  August 26, 2019 5:00am-6:00am PDT

5:00 am
forecast. it's going to be pretty warm later on today. >> it will be one of the hottest days we've had in quite a while especially with our temperatures inland reaching into the upper 90s. we're going to see a high of 98 degrees in antioch. 101 in ukiah, while the coast stays cool and this will be the hottest day of the week, so we'll talk about the temperatures coming down, but humidity going up, and just a few minutes. mike, you're watching the roads. how is it looking out there? >> palo alto, a crash or disabled vehicle but north 101 just shy of university, you see a cluster of lights, they've been moving around. i'll try to get a better view. looks at least the slow lane is blocked traveling northbound past university and embarcadero. the rest of the bay flows smoothly. back to you. >> thank you, mike. still an active scene in western contra costa county, this is the neighborhood there this morning after police say an off-duty san francisco police officer shot a man overnight in el cerrito. >> we brought you the news conference live as it happened
5:01 am
on "today in the bay." sharon katsuda, you were at that press conference. this sounds like it is a possible criminal investigation at this point. >> reporter: they said that this is exactly what they're looking into, and that's typical when there is an officer-involved shooting, so that is why the contra costa county sheriff's department is here. you can see investigators are here still on scene right now at the corner of kearney and moser lane. the captain told us in the news conference that that is exactly where the victim, the shooting victim, the man who was shot was in the driveway next to the red car in that area. now he's saying that the off-duty police officer shot, fired the shots but he's not sure more details about that. he's saying that he had contacted the san francisco police department, not sure whether the police officer was just getting off of work and returning here in el cerrito. we're trying to find out more
5:02 am
details about that. he would not give the location of where the officer lives out of that officer's safety but you can see that there was quite a scene at 10:00 last night when the shooting hamd. the captain told us in the news conference minutes ago they first got a call there was a shooting victim at the 24-hour fitness gym nearby. when they came here they found the man on moser and kearney. that is the latest. reporting live in el cerrito, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> thank you for that update. president trump says that china is ready to end the trade war. he made the comments at the g7 summit in france. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live for us in washington tracking those developments. good morning, tracie. >> hey, marcus, good morning. it was breaking news while you were sleeping, the phone was ringing, it was china and president trump says they want to sit down and talk, come to the negotiating table to try to
5:03 am
end this trade war, these back and forth tariffs that are raising prices for you, for american consumers. president trump from the g7 summit made that announcement early this morning. he's spoken a couple of times since to clarify that these discussions about having talks are happening at the very highest levels, and could impact not only our economy but china's. >> china called last night to talk trade and said let's get back to the table so we'll be getting back to the table and i think they want to do something, they've been hurt very badly but they understand this is the right thing to do, and i have great respect for them. >> so we'll see where that goes. as the g7 summit wraps up, president trump is expected to hold a joint news conference with the host french president emmanuel macron. they are expected to talk about, among other things, iran.
5:04 am
president trump says expect a joint statement saying that these countries do not want to see iran with a nuclear weapon. he talked this morning about iran's foreign minister showing up unexpectedly at the g7. president trump didn't meet with him. others did. the president said that was okay, because they gave him a heads up, and he does want to try to work something out with iran, after pulling out of that nuclear deal. marcus? >> all right, something we will have to keep watching for. tracie, we know you're going to follow it, thanks. it's another hot day on tap. fire concern is still very high. new overnight this grass fire in fremont that fired around midnight near interstate 680 just north of mission, san jose. for a time it did shut down two southbound lanes of traffic. firefighters got it out in less than an hour, but in that time, it burned about two acres. meantime a major fire prevention project begins today in the santa cruz mountains. crews will break ground on a six and a half mile fire break along
5:05 am
highway 17 from los gatos up to the summit. the idea is to create an escape route for the event of a fire and evacuation and also to stop any potential fire from reaching the roadway. people we talked to say this is necessary. >> holo at paradise and what happened up there and really and truly at the end of the day, their problem is because nobody's cleared the woods up there in 50, 75 years, and we have the same problem here. >> crews will clear all that brush up to 150 feet to the edge of the highway so it will look a little different. the work will take several months. sections of highway 17 may have to be shut down while some of that work is under way. firefighters are making more progress on a fire burning in shasta county. the mountain fire is now 80% contained, but it's burned 600 acres since thursday. all evacuation orders and road closures are now lifted. the southern marin fire department wants residents to be prepared when it comes to mandatory power shutoff.
5:06 am
on twitter the department says having backup power is a smart idea. the firefighters war fumes produced from generators could be deadly which is why you should set it outdoors. pg&e reserves the right to cut power during extreme fire danger. new overnight a scare for seven people who escaped a plane that crash landed in santa barbara, then caught fire. everyone made it out safely and airport spokesman says that the pilot declared an emergency before the crash landing. witnesses say that that plane skidded more than 500 feet before stopping. it's still not clear what caused the crash. authorities are still investigating a deadly head-on crash in contra costa county. this happened just before 9:00 yesterday in brentwood on balfour road mere american avenue. investigators say the driver of the nissan alt ma hit an oncoming van head-on after trying to pass another car.
5:07 am
the alt ma driver died at the scene. the mini van driver was not seriously hurt. a witness describes what happened. >> silver nissan was going eastbound behind me at a high rate of speed, tried to pass me, hit me, swerved into the other lane, and hit the toyota van head-on. >> i'm so sorry for the poor man, sorry for his family, it's traumatizing to see something like this. it really is. >> so sad. the driver who died has not been identified. police are still investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a role. the caribbean is bracing for a possible hurricane. tropical storm dorian is likely to strengthen into a hurricane during the next few days. people in puerto row coare stocking up on emergency equipment, bottled water and other supplies. the national hurricane center says some caribbean islands could get as much as six inches of rain. dorian is the fourth tropical storm of this year's atlantic hurricane season and kari, we know you've been watching that
5:08 am
as well. >> we can see as it continues to move closer to the windward islands this morning we are going to see a lot of those tropical communities having to really prepare for this in the caribbean, moving over toward puerto rico, as well as the dominican republic, possibly as a category 1 hurricane, and then it continues its track. we'll continue to monitor it from there. as we look at what's happening a little bit closer to home, the remnants of what was tropical storm ivo continues to move closer and this could give us a boost in humidity as we go into tomorrow, as well as wednesday. it's going to feel very muggy, along with more clouds moving through, but overall not expecting any major problems out of that, and our temperatures today will be hot, as we still have some fairly dry air, reaching up to 90 degrees in san jose, 88 in napa, and 101 today in ukiah. so i'll have a look at our temperature trend coming up and mike, you're seeing a better view of palo alto. >> i zoomed the camera in, artfully navigate and i pushed a
5:09 am
couple buttons. north 101 the right two lanes are blocked. this is not a crash. it's a car that'ut of gas unfortunately. now just less than a mile away there's a gas station on surface streets. you see the embarcadero exit sign, closest one to the south. university would be where they're headed. no slowing at the scene. folks are moving over to the left through palo alto. the rest of the bay shows a great drive, green sensors all over the place. the bay bridge toll plaza of course is the exception where we have already the commute starting to fill in these lanes lightly. we'll see the metering lights in a few minutes. back to you. >> thank you, mike. coming up, americans showing interest in greenland thanks in part to president trump. up next the public relations spike for a small far away nation that's not for sale. plus the wall street journal says amazon sells dangerous products and that's got the attention of the u.s. government. this awesome video has new attention as well. the blue angels doing their thing, check out how close they
5:10 am

5:13 am
rngt oakland 880 where we've seen the last few minutes show more lights. we'll show you where the headlights are going and the tail lights as well coming up. good morning. a happy monday to you. so this is the messhat we saw on friday. we are getting word from the chinese president, trump's claims that china called to ask to restart trade may not be true. we'll get to that in a minute. amazon hard to tell if this was part of the larger hit on the market or because of reaction to a friday "wall street journal" article that documented how amazon is allowing unsafe products to be sold on its site. the headline reads "amazon at ceded control of its site." the journal found more than 4,000 items for sale on amazon declared unsafe by federal agencies. that got the attention of the ftc commissioner who said this
5:14 am
article raises real concerns whether amazon is profiting from widespread deception on its platform. deceptive acts or practices can threaten health and safety and are unlawful. several business groups warning the trade war is having a real effect on the american economy. the fed has said much of the same. president trump stated the chinese called to ask for a restart in trade talks that made wall street happy but the chinese foreign minister is not aware of any such phone call. president trump has been at the g7 summit in the search surf town, we'll talk more about that as we talk politics in 30 minutes. he's been making tremendous news with tweets including ordering american companies to move out of china and calling the american head of the federal reserve an enemy. fed chairman jay powell was appointed by trump to replace janet yellen, an economist, jay powell is not but it's not an enemy of the united states either. "the washington post" quotes
5:15 am
white house insiders saying president trump replaced yellen in part because she was short. president trump's also asked us to measure the success of the stock market based on how much it has jumped since he was elected, not the recent increases. the dow, the night of the election, was 18,332, the nasdaq just over 5100. you can see the comparison numbers there, we've jumped quite a bit since then. in that sense he has had great success but in the last couple of days, not so much. the thing to watch this morning is dow futures were up on this idea that chinese called us. the chinese are saying what, now? >> it's just so much. >> yes. >> thank you, scott. new this morning, greenland, speaking of president trump, is seeing a spike in american tourists. the world's largest island made headlines last week after president trump said he'd be interested in buying the country. since then travel booking site hopper told nbc news it's seen a
5:16 am
337% spike in searches for travel to greenland but greenland has been seeing an increase in american tourism even prior to last week's news. in 2018, 3% more americans flew to greenland than in the previous year but i wonder what the actual number is, because 3% of what? that's whey want to know. >> good question. >> find out. macy's and jcpenney are bothing ready to start selling secondhand clothing, this is by threada. >> the san francisco company. >> that's the thing, the fashion resale site is the second largest online thrift store, like you said kris, here in san francisco and the department store chain really hopes used clothing can revitalize sales. the resale market, get this, who knew, exceeds $20 billion a year in revenue. >> i did a story way back when they first launched. what a great concept for hand-me-downs for kids. put whatever you have in your hands down. this is what it's like to be in the cockpit of a blue angel.
5:17 am
look how close. ariel dare devils posting this mind-blowing video to twitter over the weekend. the planes close enough to touch. their wings are just inches away from each other, and get hyped, the blue angels will be in the bay area for fleet week which starts october ofth. the blue angels take to the skies starting october 10th. fun to see them on their practice runs. >> how long do you practice to get comfortable? >> no way. >> you got to think at least hours, a few hours at least. >> i can barely walk that close to people. bump, sorry. >> move over an extra lane. i guess that's the reason visibility is so variable. >> i think about just one little gust of wind coming through, you know. a sneeze, anything. >> anything. >> let's start out this morning talking about this heat as you get ready to head out the door and also air quality is an issue for the inland east bay. that's where we have a spare the
5:18 am
air alert issue as we take a live look outside in dublin, and so there you do need to try to do what you can to help improve the air quality, catch public transit or carpool this morning, as we are going to see a lot more ozone levels in those areas, in the tri-valley. as we also head over toward cupertino, temperatures start out in the low 70s. a warm start to the day but heating up as we go into the rest of the day, reaching into the upper 80s by early afternoon, and if maybe you couldn't sleep or you're up early this morning to get ready for that first day of school, hayward unified will have a very nice day. as the kids head back to school we're at 60 degrees as you're walking to school. we'll be at 67 degrees at 9:00 and 80 degrees at 1:00 this afternoon. here is a look at all of our high temperatures, because there will be a wide range in temperatures across the bay area, in cupertino once again some upper 80s/low 90s. up to 90 in downtown san jose. 85 in hayward, and concord.
5:19 am
98 degrees antioch today reaching 100 degrees. meantime we'll see some upper 60s in half moon bay and redwood city 85, and 69 in the outer sunset. north bay up to 95 in santa rosa, and 101 today in ukiah. hot temperatures here as temperatures peak, but then as we start to see the high pressure moving in, we'll also see an increase of some tropical cloud and some more humidity, as the remnants of a tropical system continues to move closer and makes it feel very muggy outside. inland areas in the low 90s but probably feeling hotter than that, 90 degrees on wednesday, and then we'll see our air drying out on thursday into the weekend, with some upper 80s and low 90s. san francisco staying pretty even here, with some sloefts througholow 70s throughout the work week. mike you're looking for lanes to clear in palo alto. >> that's great, right on cue, north 101 all lanes cleared, the
5:20 am
disabled vehicle out of gas. hopefully they'll push it along university. there's a gas station over there just over this is a big box store, it's a blue furniture store with yellow letters. a smooth drive either side of the bay, dumbarton bridge and san mateo bridges look great. roads are fine. slowing out of the altamont but clear toward livermore. contra costa county looks great, highway 4 no real problems. a little dip in speeds as you approach 242. now there may be crews clearing from that direction, but there were no closures there. and the bay bridge toll plaza shows a little more traffic flow, sorting it self out, the fastrak lanes queueing we probably have the metering lights that turned on the last few seconds if not the last couple of minutes, there is the build and it's standard. back over to you. coming up next, dramatic new video of a driver ramming his car into crowds of people in colorado. when it happened, nobody was
5:21 am
seriously hurt. we're going to tell you what led to this horrific scene. a lot of football fans and non-fans talking about this one today. andrew luck leaving the game of football, just after a short professional career. up next, the money he gets to keep, even though he is not finishing out his contract with the colts. >> that was a surprise. one more look at the blue angels flying high. hope your commute is a little less nerve-racking than that one after the break. >> stay in your own lane.
5:22 am
5:23 am
5:23 for you this morning. a popular south bay park remains closed. this is due to mountain lions. people are being turned away from rancho san antonio in cupertino hills.
5:24 am
you'll see the reason why, right there, look at your screen. you can see rangers posted video of two young mountain lions but it turns out the entire family is prowling the trails. mountain lions are not usually in that area. so far there is no set date for the park's reopening. rangers recommend checking the park's website to see when it reopens. this morning, all new video showing a brutal hit-and-run in denver. we want to warn you, the video may be hard for to you watch and may be disturbing. so sad. officers were responding to a fight in a busy street, then without warning a car plowed through the scene, hitting two people. both were taken to the hospital, however, neither was seriously injured. police are still searching for the driver involved. >> that is really upsetting video. this morning the lapd is investigating a possible hate
5:25 am
drim after transgender women were removed from a downtown bar. lgbt protesters outside that bar. a cell phone video from friday night shows bouncers removing two transgender women. the women say they were out with colleagues from a non-profit that works with the lgbt community. a couple began shouting slurs when the argument escalated and the restaurant staff asked them to leave. however one transgender woman says they were the only ones who were taken out by force. >> they used excessive force with us, directly towards us, and they didn't do the same treatment to the other people. >> the restaurant calls this a rare incident saying their employees acted within their policy. it also promised to donate some of the proceeds to the lgbt non-profit, where those women work. bombshell announcement from one of the nfl's biggest names, colts quarterback and stanford alum andrew luck calling it quits.
5:26 am
>> the news broke during the colts preseason game against chicago saturday night. luck missed the 2017 season because of injuries. he says that the pain of rehab is just too hard and now he wants to focus on his family. >> the only way i see out is to no longer play football. it's taken my joy of this game away, and this -- sorry. >> i can imagine that's tough, after so many years of putting your heart and soul into the game. >> not only that, you want to preserve your body. you have a family. you want to be alive and healthy for them. >> the 29-year-old luck was the number one overall pick in the 2012 nfl draft. >> i feel sad for him but i'm glad he's doing what he thinks is right. coming up, top stories we're following on this tuesday morning.
5:27 am
>> including the breaking news out of contra costa county, where an off-duty san francisco police officer shot a man. a live report is moments away. >> plus -- >> everyone was running in the hallways like a whole stampede. it's kind of scary. >> panic and fear at the great mall in the south bay as a smash and grab robbery leads to a stampede. shoppers thought it all was an active shooter inside the mall. coming up in a live report, the frightening moments and the robbers who are still on the loose. and taking a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza, woo, welcome monday morning. mike is going to get us through that commute, coming up in a bit. kari will have a look at the monday morning forecast for you. it is 5:27. you're watching "today in the bay." it's time for the biggest sale of the year on the

5:31 am
on schedule folks, but there are no surprises. that's great. we've seen the fastrak lanes continue to move well and that's good news for folks who have fastrak. there is your advantage. highway 4 shows slowing out of antioch and toward pittsburg. walnut creek interchange 60 and 24 at speed. same thing for oakland, 880, 580 and no problems south of there. the first blip for san jose we'll check to make sure the roads are moving as predicted. back to you. >> thanks, mike. now to breaking news we've been airing since we went on the air at 4:30 this morning, a san francisco police officer is now under investigation after authorities say he shot a man overnight in contra costa county. >> "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda is live in el cerrito. officers are now under a lot of questions this morning. >> that's right, kris and marcus. there are investigators on scene, some of them just started taking off, but there were some investigators, you can see there in the darkness, still in front
5:32 am
of this apartment complex right there, where they're using flashlights looking near that tree just beyond the red car. let's look at some video from overnight. the police captain tells us they first received a call about a man shot at the gym nearby, the 24-hour fitness, but found a man with gunshot wounds across the street on moser lane here, and kearney. the captain confirms an off-duty san francisco police officer shot the man, but police did not give details on what led up to the shooting. they also did not say whether the officer just got off of work or lives in this area. so back here live, police say the man does not have gunshot wounds that are life-threatening, so that is the good news, but we are still trying to figure out more details on what led up to this shooting. reporting live in el cerrito, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." some shopping centers across the state are on alert after
5:33 am
three separate robberies in crowded spaces sunday. in the south bay three robbers caused a big scare and a lockdown at great mall in milpitas. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live there now. in the wake of the mass shootings across the country, including the one in gilroy this was terrifying for a lot of people. a lot of people talking about it. >> reporter: kris and marcus, hundreds of shoppers here at the great mall panicked last night because a number mistakenly thought there was an active shooter here on the scene. take a look at your tv screen. cell phone video shows some of the people running away from the property, others hid inside storage rooms in the back of the stores. shoppers tell us they heard loud sounds around 7:30 last night near a jewelry store. someone yelled "gunman" which started a chain reaction. people posted there was an active shooter at the great mall which added to the chaos and confusion. as it turns out there was no
5:34 am
active shooter but three men did go into the diamonds by klary store smashed the displays and stole jewelry. >> everyone went on lockdown and everyone was running in the hallways look a stampede. it was kind of scary. >> i was trying to get away from that area. i just, you know, i felt like i was in a movie. i felt like, you know, we see all those, everything on the news. i just didn't want nothing to happen to my kids. >> reporter: milpitas police did lock down the mall for a few hours and with the help of the santa clara county sheriff, san jose police, chp and mall security, they conducted a sweep of the property to see if anyone was hurt and also to confirm whether or not there was an active shooter which i mentioned there wasn't. they cleared the mall around 10:40 last night. law enforcement is still looking for the three robbers. reporting live in milpitas, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. as we mentioned, oddly this was one of three cases involving similar scenarios hours apart across the state. in modesto four men shattered
5:35 am
jewelry store glass at vintage fair mall and shoppers mistook that sound for gunfire and people ran for their lives, happened about 5:00 in the evening. after the mall was evacuated police determined no shots were fired. earlier in the day in southern california smash and grab robbers targeted a neiman marcus store. shoppers said they thought it was an active shooter as well. police determined there were no shots fired there. officers made two arrests in connection with what was a robbery. happening today, one of four people accused in a shoot-out that sparked chaos at san bruno's tanforan mall is due in court for a plea hearing. this happened in early july. it sent people running for their lives. four people were injured. authorities eventually arrested three juveniles and one adult. that adult, 18-year-old deandre gant, is due in court today in redwood city. snowfall now in eastern contra costa county the search for a missing man in the waters of discovery bay is considered a recovery effort. authorities say efrin cruz and a friend were fishing in an
5:36 am
inflatable raft around 4:00 in the morning yesterday when the raft popped. his friend swam back to shore but cruz did not make it. first responders searched for hours as people who live nearby looked on. >> i thought it was perhaps just a training mission, because i saw them every 30 minutes or so circling back and forth. so it was hard for me to learn that it was somebody in dire need. >> the coast guard says that the two men were not wearing life jackets. 5:36. silicon valley pride took over downtown san jose yesterday for quite the party. the lgbtq community and supporters celebrated the 44th year of san jose pride. the festival was at cesar chavez park and san jose fire department was part of the fun this year. you see the fire truck there, the theme is diversity in action with a focus on celebrating the transgender community. >> i think it's another big step
5:37 am
for san jose, because just making the gay community be welcome, just knowing that we support them. >> last night there was a '70s disco themed festival to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the stone wall riots which as you may know kind of started the whole pride movement. right now, hopefully a lot of people are dealing with less congestion this morning. >> that's right, the parade, the festival, a lot of folks came to downtown san jose. today, we are not seeing the rainbow right here right now. we're only seeing green and a little bit of orange, and that's good. oh, darn it. okay, now we have a rainbow, a little bit of red popped up here as well. red, orange, yellow and green is what we have, but only for 101. typical spot north of 680. the rest of the south bay and in fact most of the rest of the bay looks great. 680 that's not bad, it's just a little slowing through pleasanton and out of the altamont pass, as you expect, we'll look over to the peninsula for all that green, same thing for the san mateo and the
5:38 am
dumbarton bridges. everything's great across those westbound spans, getting to the bay bridge, a little slowdown. i do want to call out that the chp has issued a fog advisory, if you are driving across the golden gate bridge. it doesn't look too bad there, but you see the little glow i imagine that's why things are cooler at the coast. but i don't know. always somebody. >> we're still talking about the weekend and it was pretty nice if you were along the coast, but it was so hot in the valleys and we're going to see still some warm weather inland, and going into this upcoming weekend, but not as hot as it was, so we're coming down as we get closer to that labor day weekend, and then for san francisco, some upper 60s and low 70s. so looking pretty nice. where are we going this weekend? how about squaw valley, and it's going to be pretty nice in the sierra as well as we see some upper 70s there throughout the weekend, and then as we head down to the coast, half moon bay will be in the mid-60s.
5:39 am
at times some fog moving by, but overall we'll see some sunshine. napa valley is looking good and 88 on saturday, and up to 90 degrees on this upcoming sunday. so as we talk about our weekend plans, or maybe you're going to be getting away if you have an extra day off, let me know about it. i'm @karihallweather at twitter, facebook and instagram and i can help you out with the forecast for your weekend destination. we'll talk about today, that's coming up in 30 minutes. >> thank you, kari. coming up the latest on the wildfire burning near downtown los angeles. up next the progress firefigh r firefighters are making overnight. and wall street hung up on two phone calls from the chinese to american negotiators. and mystery solved. why this canine was busted by the department it works for. we'll tell you about this cute little criminal here, coming up next for you. you're watching "today in the bay."
