we'll be in the mid 80s in antioch. 92 in downtown san jose. we'll look at all our microclimates coming up. we have an off-ramp closure happening. >> that's right. chp says they may have to close this because of a crash. they're heading out there. expect this to be the case. as we get to the bay bridge, no problems. up here in walnut creek, southbound 680 past the 24 interchange. the south main off-ramp may be closed as they move one of the vehicles involved. it sounds like a relatively minor crash. that's the situation in development as chm is getting on scene there. a crash south 680 as well as 101 at third. i'll check the surface streets for now. right back to you. 4:31 right now. california students are seeing big changes as they start the

school year. not talking about facilities or curriculum. we're talking about the student id. >> kris sanchez live in san jose with the important message going out. how is this being received, kris? >> reporter: suicide is the second leading cause of death for teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19. that's why our state lawmakers wanted to put suicide prevention information right where the students can see it every single day. that is on the back of their student id. i want to show you what this looks like. in the blue area is where the student's name and photo would go. ton back, a text line and phone number for the national suicide prevention lifeline as required by the new california law that went into effect this summer for all students in middle school an high school and college, this is public or private. really all students. according to 2017 survey by the centers for disease control and prevention, 17% of teenagers say they seriously considered attempting suicide.

14% said they made a suicide plan. 7% tried to kill themselves. 70% of them told someone or gave a warning sign ahead of time. sometimes it was to people who didn't know what to do with that information. >> we really want the students to reach out to an adult. having this number and making it more anonymous could help some of our students. >> reporter: the information that is on the back of those ids is suicideprevention.org. it's 800-273-talk. you can also text for more information. text home to 741741. i'll post all this information on our social media platforms because you never know who might need to reach out, and certainly a good conversation starter with your kids this morning.

in contra costa county parents and students in pleasant hill are stunned after a recent firing of a teacher many call popular and inspirational. >> as "today in the bay" easterry mcsweeney reports, many believe the firing is the end of a personal issue with the principal. >> that's former science teacher doug scott speaking across from the school board meeting. >> the fact he's still touching people's lives and going through this is insane. >> he's an amazing teacher, really intelligent man, very inspirational and passionate towards the students. >> reporter: according to scott, a couple weeks ago as the semester was about to begin, college park high school principal joe alvarez fired him and did not give a reason. >> he got 15 minutes to get what you want out of your room and onto your bike before turning in your keys and being escorted across campus. >> reporter: scott flunked a

student last spring, but principal alvarez at the request of the student's parents, changed the grade to passing. >> ever since they acknowledged that he just been hounding me, hounding me, hounding me. >> reporter: we contacted mr. alvarez said he has no comment and wished us luck. >> it's a confidential personnel matter, and so that's the way we process these things. >> if they say i'm gone, then i'm gone. but i'm not done. >> reporter: terry mcsweeney "today in the bay." a grief stricken family is looking for answers this morning. their daughter was killed over the weekend after a suspected drunk driver crashed into her uber car. that crash happened early sunday morning on lawrence expressway in santa clara. police say the speck was at a bar in sunnyvale, got into a

stolen car and minutes later that crash happened. the 28-year-old and another employee from apple died at the hospital. the other passenger and the ride share driver suffered serious injuries. >> one person, young person lost her life and two other people whose lives will never be the same, innocent people who did absolutely nothing wrong and this person who has no care in the world for them. >> police arrested 32 claudio perez of san jose. el cerito police releasing a booking photo of the man involved in a violent exchange with an off duty san francisco police officer. that officer shot and injured him late sunday. police say thomas whalen is a tlans yent who used a rock as a weapon while assaulting the officer. it happened outside the officer's apartment complex. the officer has not been identified, but sfpd says he's

on administrative leave which is standard protocol during an investigation like this. a followup on the shooting in the middle of market street. a search continues for the third suspect. we showed you this video, three men running down the street in broad daylight, one of them firing a miss sfol inpistol int. two men were arrested in oakland yesterday. officers also seized a gun. as for the third man, police say he's a teenager and they know who he is. south bay leaders will vote on declaring a climate emergency. supervisors plan to take up the issue in a few hours. if passed, officials say they will work to come up with ways to address the causes of global warming. backers of the emergency resolution point to the ongoing wildfires in brazil and california. the show will go on, at least for mao, at the milpitas theater company. center states performing arts was told earlier this month the

contract may not be renewed. members of the group expressed concerns at a town hall. now the theater is allowed to put on a fall show while it awaits a final decision on the contract. coming up on "today in the bay," instagram coming up with a new app to keep you more in touch with your closest friends. spirit airlines rolling in a new way to book and change your flight. the app you'll need on your phone to get started.

good morning. i'm contessa blur at cnbc headquarters. today's top business headlines, we're looking for an open in the green this morning on wall street. dow futures are up more than 80 points right now. yesterday stocks rallied. the dow jumping 270 points following president trump's comments at the g7 summit in france. chinese officials contacted their u.s. counterparts to try to restart trade talks. despite the gains, the dow is down more than 3% this month and on pace to break a two-month winning streak. today we're watching for reports on home sales and the all important consumer confidence. insta glam is taking another shot at snapchat developing a messaging side called thed, a companion app to instagram inviting people to share location, speed and battery life which i had no kwlied my friends were even interested in.

i can also share text photo and video messages. snapchat is a messaging app built around close friends. that's the way a large portion of users use it. reports say the average snapchat user spends more time on its app than instagram users which is probably why instagram is taking aim. spirit will soon let you book reservations on whatsapp. customers will first interact with a chat bot that provides basic information about your request and then a spirit agent takes over. from there you follow a link and complete the booking. other airlines included delta and united are exploring similar options. i'm already accustomed here to the text messages that say my flight is delayed or the gate has changed. >> there you have it. thanks contessa. coming up on "today in the bay," kari is tracking the

tuesday forecast for us. >> it's still going to be hot today. as we get started, looking live in san jose, at least we have our cool start. but it feels a little more humid this morning as you get ready to head out. our temperatures heading into the low 80s already by 11:00. we'll get a look at all our microclimates and the rest of the week's forecast coming up. over at the bay bridge toll plaza, it looks like tuesday. that means an early build right here. we should see things calm down but not before they turn the metering lights on. this is 4:43. population pretty good for the cash lanes. we'll show you how things are shaping up for the crash in walnut creek. you're watching "today in the bay."

learning. >> you're getting pretty good and then you stop. >> today if you're going to do tennis, you want to do it much earlier. >> do everything early today. if you have yard work, running around, have errands to do, try to get it done before noon. here is a live look outside at walnut creek. this is one of the spots where you'll have to get in those early activities. it's because we are going to have another hot day. here is a look at our temperature trend. we'll be at about 63 degrees at 7:00 as the sun continues to rise. we'll be at 66 at 8:00. we'll see a few clouds early, but then clearing out for the rest of the day. at 80 degrees at 11:00. here is a look at the south bay. high temperatures reaching 94 in los gatos this afternoon, up to 93 in milpitas. we will still have a breeze. it looks like it kicks in later on today. for much of the afternoon we're not going to feel much wind. our temperatures in the upper 90s again this afternoon.

in oakland, expect a high of 79 degrees there. 66 at half moon bay. san mateo reaching 82 degrees, and some mid 70s in the mission district while the marina district is at 66. 82 in mill valley. clearlake topped out at 100 degrees. still some hot temperatures. then you factor in a surge of humidity for the next couple days. we'll see that today and tomorrow. then by thursday and friday, the humidity is going back down. we can see the approach of the system that will be out in the pacific, could bring in a few more clouds by the end of the weekend. but it's all about this high pressure causing us to really not have much of a wind. we will still have the fog near the coast. as we go into thursday, friday, some slight cooling. once again that storm system approaches the pacific northwest. here is the way it looks for us, humid today, 93 degrees. some upper 80s for the rest of the week. we're going to see those inland temperatures coming down into the upper 80s and low 90s, just

slightly above normal. san francisco mostly in the low 70s throughout the rest of the forecast. mike, you're following up on a few items. >> a few assorted items for the morning. like a potpourri. we're looking at the issue for southbound 680 right around mission north. it was reported as a crash. then the detail comes in, i think it's just an orange cone out there. so watch out in that area. there's reports of the car that may have missed the off-ramp and went into the hillside as well. no major injuries. we're tracking both of those incidents through the area. no slowing up there or for the rest of our map. we're going to follow up with another issue for 680 right here. south main the off-ramp past the walnut creek interchange. for some reason one of my traffic partners thinks the off-ramp has reopened. chp says they might have to close it. maybe in flux over there. plan on using olympic to avoid the whole thing. over here at the bay bridge toll plaza, a little bit of a build. you see the cash lanes over on

the right side are thinning out. on the left side we still have one lane that's not open for cash. that's why we have the longer line there. that will shift and build up toward the metering lights and turn on about 5:20 this morning. there are no delays through these travel routes getting through the maze. the coast guard is suspending the search for a missing fisherman in east contra costa county. efrain cruz went missing in discovery bay. he was on an inflatable bay with t -- raft with a friend when it poptd. the other man swam back to the shore. 26-year-old nelly morales died earlier walk across east avenue. last night her family told city leaders that intersection needs better lighting or a traffic light to avoid another tragedy. >> until we have a change, then

we will not stop. she will not be a statistic, not in my book. >> the last fatal superintendent according to police was back in 2008. east avenue is already scheduled for an upgrade according to the group bike east bay who is also pushing for change. a photographer on the peninsula is accused of sexually abusing kids. now he's trying to get his bond reduced so he can get out of jail. randolph haldeman is being held on a $5 million bond. his alleged victims range in age from 4 to 16. haldeman is accused of committing the crimes when he took pictures for a menlo park swim team. he was bailed out after his first arrest. then more victims came forward. police arrested him again and the judge increased his bond. 4:51 right now. coming up here on "today in the bay," "nbc bay area responds." an auto pay owner adding up
