hurricane dorian it is a category one storm expected to both intensify and grow in size as it moves toward the southeastern u.s >> a state of emergency declared in florida with the governor urging residents and tourists alike to prepare right now. >> nasa is doing that, starting the work of securing launch pads and equipment at kennedy space center a major hurricane has never made landfall there and officials are not taking chances this time around we'll have a live report from cape canaveral ahead but first al is here with brand new information on dorian's path and its potential impact on the holiday weekend. you remind us not to get wrapped up in category classifications. >> you can get plenty of damage with category one or two but looks like dorian will make landfall labor day as a major hurricane. right now though it's category one storm, 85-mile-per-hour wind, slowed down just a bit moving northwest at 13 miles per hour we look at the track from the

national hurricane center. this is the official track becomes a major hurricane saturday morning then it's still out over open water. by sometime early monday morning a category three storm by sunday it's across the northern bahama island chain and by sometime early monday morning we're talking about landfall as a category three storm and then moves inland and loses some strength but could possibly then come out on into the gulf and meander and make another landfall along the florida panhandle. let's compare the other two major models the american model, for example, gives landfall in northern florida along the florida/georgia coastline monday night. the european model now is coming more in line with the national hurricane center track and that comes in sometime late -- or i should say late sunday afternoon on into monday night we're going to be watching that track very closely and, of course, the impacts. eastern florida looking at tropical force gusts by saturday evening.

by sunday we'll be looking at hurricane force gusts. and as far as the rainfall is concerned, we are talking about anywhere from four to eight inches of rain along the eastern florida coast. but we could see upwards of 12 inches of rain. this is going to be a very dangerous situation. but again we're going to continue to watch it because it's got several days, kristen, of open water and chances to develop over very warm waters with very warm air supplying that energy. >> and millions are bracing as we watch it. al, thank you for that and as we mentioned, florida's governor has declared a state of emergency. in advance of dorian's potential arrival. let's bring in nbc's kathy park in cape canaveral for us what's the latest where you are, kathy? >> reporter: kristen, good morning to you conditions are relatively calm but this is really the calm before the storm and floridians are all too familiar with that they're preparing for disaster, and tourists are getting ready

to cut their long holiday weekend short. this morning puerto rico is breathing a sigh of relief, avoiding a direct hit by hurricane dorian, which made landfall as a category one in the u.s. virgin islands, bringing with it torrential rain and rough surf now dorian is moving over open waters, heading straight for the u.s. the storm es unpredictable path has all of florida and parts of the east coast on high alert florida's governor has already declared a state of emergency and local officials are warning residents and tourists not to take the storm lightly from miami -- >> get the right information and then prepare. >> reporter: to jacksonville. >> we don't know where this is going to go so it's time to be calm, make sure you have your kits and make sure you know your

zone. >> reporter: also georgia's governor urging caution. >> we're not exactly sure where this storm is going to go but you need to start preparing now. >> reporter: residents uncertain where it will hit or how much of a punch it will pack are not taking chances. >> water, gasoline containers and storage bins. >> lessons learned from three hurricanes hitting florida in the last three years. >> we ran out of gas last time and we were stuck on 75 for hours. >> reporter: gas lines are growing and grocery stores already seeing the rush. at this home depot in orlando hurricane supplies are flying off the shelves. >> we may have seen 20 or 30 people asking for hurricane supplies, a couple of days ago now we're in the hundreds. >> reporter: for tourists the storm threatening to wash out their labor day weekend plans. >> there's really only like us and a few other people here, two days ago it was totally stacked. >> sarah and her boyfriend were camping in cape canaveral, now they're packing up their new rv and heading north. >> all the wind is going to come and knock us over sideways or

something. >> reporter: with dorian still days away all eyes on the sky, watching, waiting, and worrying. and depending on where dorian hits the situation could go from bad to worse here in the state of florida and here is why there is rain in the forecast this week. there's also a new moon tomorrow which could mean higher than normal tides and then you factor in the hurricane conditions and you're looking at some dangerous and very dynamic situations. back to you guys. >> kathy, thank you for that. meanwhile, breaking news overnight in the presidential race, senator kirsten gillibrand announcing she is ending her white house bid. nbc's peter alexander has more on that. peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, craig that crowded democratic primary field is one candidate down. she told nbc news she decided to get out after she was unable to secure a spot on the september

blane barksdale, a man associated with the aryan brotherhood, and his wife susan are prime suspects in the murder of 72-year-old frank bligh whose home was burned in tucson back in april, his body never found the couple was arrested a month later while holed up in an rv in upstate new york but monday the murder suspects, while being transported back to arizona by a private security company, somehow overpowered guards in the small town of blanding, utah the victim's brother now speaking out. >> i cannot understand why they would ever let the two of them travel together. i realize it was strictly to save money but look what a mess they've got now. >> reporter: overnight new information emerging there was a third inmate in the van who was also being extradited back to arizona. multiple sources telling kvoa tv the third inmate told authorities he wanted no part of the escape this morning still no comment from investigators on exactly how the couple was able to escape authorities saying they believe the two are armed and dangerous,

driving a red pickup truck like this one with front end damage at this point police honing their search around arizona where warning signs are alerting drivers to be on the lookout but authorities are saying by now they could be almost anywhere in the united states. and this morning the utah marshal service is offering a reward of up to $10,000 per fugitive as this manhunt goes on guys, back to you. >> steve patterson there in l.a., steve, thanks. now to a deadly attack in washington, d.c. that put the city on the edge a 27-year-old woman stabbed to death while she was walking a dog. nbc's geoff bennett has the very latest on that investigation good morning, geoff. >> reporter: kristen, good morning. folks here in this washington, d.c. neighborhood are in a state of shock over what transpired here on their

street d.c. police say it was not a robbery, it was not a sexual assault, and that it appears the suspect randomly targeted the victim in this case. this morning friends and family are mourning the tragic loss of a 27-year-old woman who was fatally stabbed while walking a dog in washington, d.c police say margery magill was working for an online pet service when she was approached by a man who stabbed her several times in a seemingly random attack neighbors say they heard magill's frightening calls for help. >> then we looked down and we found the young lady on the sidewalk in front of our house bleeding. >> reporter: authorities identifying the suspect as eliyas aregahegne, arresting him at his home. around the corner from the murder scene the home's surveillance video helping to catch him. >> the detectives located video of value there are a number of registered

video cameras in that block. >> reporter: the incident comes almost a year after another random attack in the nation's capital. wendy martinez was stabbed last september while jogging in a popular d.c. neighborhood, her attack caught on camera, the suspect pleaded guilty to first degree murder earlier this summer magill graduated from the university of california davis in 2015. her father says she recently completed her masters degree and traveled around the world developing better farming techniques for other countries. >> she loved life and lived it to the edge. from the time she got up in the morning until she went to bed at night -- >> magill says margery loved living in the nation's capital a father devastated over the loss of his daughter. >> she was a sweet, life loving person who i don't think i've ever heard anybody say anything about her negative she cared about people she was just a joy. >> reporter: and you can see something of a vigil taking shape here where people have left a note and candles and some flowers. marjory magill's father says he was so proud of her daughter and

in her short 27 years she packed more living into that than most people do in their entire lives. kristen, craig >> how absolutely tragic, geoff, thank you. a series of raids in four states on wednesday including the michigan home of gary jones. see the aerial shot, showing agents conducting the search in detroit. that's the detroit suburb of canton there the raid was part on an ongoing corruption probe involving illegal payouts to union officials. so far nine people have been charged. eight convicted. at this point it is not clear exactly how jones is involved in the alleged kickback and bribery scheme overall six different locations were raided. an investigation is under way after a fatal crash involving jesse combs. the 39-year-old died while attempting to break a land speed record she's being remembered by fans, friends, and her longtime boyfriend. here's nbc's gadi schwartz.

hurricane, expected to pass near or over the northern bahamas on saturday and closing in on florida by sunday afternoon. al is tracking the storm he'll be back with more and new information. the spectacular site on the island of stromboli, a volcano erupts sending ash thousands of feet into the sky. lava poured into the sea no reports of injury the stromboli volcano is one of the world's most active. two months ago a hiker was killed after an eruption there. frightening video out of cape cod bay looks like it was shot on the backlot of universal studios. two fishermen had a close encounter. the shark passed around the boat and circled around to the other side of the hump back whale. one of the fishermen called it the most epic thing i've ever

witnessed on the water i bet. good thing they were in a boat. >> looks like the shark had some other things to get to. now to the latest on this fatal boating accident involving kevin o'leary, one of the stars of "shark tank," this morning we're hearing from him as police investigate what happened. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer joins us this morning with the latest on the investigation. good morning >> reporter: on the hit show he's known as mr. wonderful, kevin o'leary is now dealing with a real life tragedy the boat he was riding in over the weekend crashed into another boat killing two people. the question now, who's to blame? >> i thought this was -- on a stick. >> reporter: businessman kevin o'leary known for his confidence on "shark tank" now left shaken audiotape after he and his wife linda survived a fatal boat crash last weekend it happened here on picturesque lake joseph in ontario, canada

he was telling nbc news i was a passenger in a boat that was involved in a tragic collision with another water craft that had no navigation lights on and then fled the scene. i am fully cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation. authorities say two passengers on the other boat were killed. 48-year-old susanna brito a mother of three from canada and 64-year-old gary poltash, a father of two from florida his brother tells nbc news upon impact o'leary boat went over the bow of the other, striking the male victim in the head and killing him instantly. >> three occupants of both boats for also transported to hospital where they were treated and released. >> reporter: o'leary offering his heartfelt prayers and condolences to the victims the families and those affected by this loss his rep confirming kevin's wife was the one driving their boat,

right, al? >> that's right. taking a look showing you what's going on, interesting thing since 1850 there's been 121 hurricane landfalls from brownsville, texas all the way up to east port, maine what's interesting is there's no hurricane landfall since 1850 along the space coast, which is considered west palm beach up to cksonville and cape canaveral. there's been no hurricane landfall in september. so that's an interesting situation. hurricane gene was the last major hurricane to hit the florida east coast that was september 2004 so as you look out over the typical hurricane tracks you've got a big area of high pressure, usually the bermuda high the main three tracks, tropic of atlanta, south of florida gulf coast, tropic of atlanta into the east coast, on the caribbean, into the gulf and now it looks like we'll have something going into that coastal area we'll continue to track it good morning. i am meteorologist, kari hall.

8:00 a.m. from the national hurricane center however, they have not issued it yet and so that might mean that there are changes afoot that they are still working on. but here's what we have from the latest 85-mile-per-hour winds, it's moving northwest at 13 miles per hour track of the storm, we won't get an updated track until 11:00 but this is the latest, a category three storm by saturday morning at 2:00 a.m. it continues towards the bahamas as a three, makes landfall, sometime monday morning, and then moves inland on tuesday as a category one storm comparing the other tracks to the national hurricane center track, the american model makes landfall in northern florida monday night the european model, south florida, on monday evening so we're going to watch these systems as they kind of converge but until then we don't have consensus. we do, though, know that we're going to be looking at a very high risk of hurricane force winds by sunday evening. moving into the central eastern

that sets the stage for your entire school year this makes all the difference in the world. our backpacks are in the children's hands before school begins and they walk in and look and feel like all the other kids. >> i love this program my mom was a schoolteacher more than 30 years, still in the school system and she talked every year about precisely this, how many kids don't show up with the school supplies that they need how did this come about 13 years ago? >> you know, i was new to volunteers of america, and i was visiting our various programs and i happened to be at one of our family shelters when children were getting on a school bus i didn't see any backpacks i asked the staff, they said don't worry, the teachers will give us. i was a mom and had been shopping for my own daughter i was agonizing over that. came back to work, told my boss and volunteers america and said we've got to do something about this that was the genesis, that was it. >> as you said you are a mom

too. talk about what it's like emotionally for you when you see the look on those kids faces when you're giving them these backpacks? >> i'm blessed i get to see that every year the children get their backpacks, they open it up, remember, these kids rarely get anything brand new so we tell the volunteers don't open the pencil boxes, don't open anything that doesn't have to be opened because these kids are going to open their backpack, explore it it's like christmas in july for these kids. >> these are quality backpacks too. >> yeah, yeah, yeah. by the way, we've got carson daly deployed at the end for quality control. >> good timing. >> natalie is down there mr. roker's in the middle of it as well. what goes into the backpacks >> they're grade specific. high schoolers get a usb flash drive, a scientific calculator and everything else they need, a full-size dictionary the middle schoolers get a geometry kit, it's gorgeous in a tin. nothing is low quality everything, we negotiate the heck out of prices, and, you know, econy to sle we can get very good pricing but it's all top quality. the measure is, would it put it on my own daughter's back. if not, it doesn't pass the sniff test. >> i love that

good morning to you. it is 8:56. i'm laura garcia. a lot of breaking news this morning. we're finding out a driver who hit an 11-year-old girl this morning in east contra costa county has been detained. the child was hit about 7:00 a.m. in brentwood. the driver then took off. she was later arrested not far from the scene on sunset drive

near brentwood boulevard. the little girl was air lifted from the scene and taken to uc-davis hospital. she is expected to be okay. we'll bring a live report during our midday newscast at 11:00 a.m. more breaking news right now damage at willow lake high school after a suspected arsonist set something on fire. so far no one is in police custody. we are reaching out to the school district and police right now for more information. look for that on our midday news at 11:00 as well. a busy week for firefighters because of the dry, hot conditions. about 20 people still can't return to their homes following a fire in eastern contra costa county. it started last night at a farm outside of brentwood on byron highway near marsh creek road. the fire destroyed a mobile home and two barns. it also knocked down power lines. a local weather update for you in just an hour.
