clearlake today while san francisco is at 70 degrees. more on that coming up in a few minutes. mike, you're updating a crash in concord. >> the bay bridge toll plaza we usually see the cash lanes filled up past the end of the parking lot with you not today, friday and a pre-holiday friday shows a lighter volume around the bay, the maze, contra costa county. i want to zoom in over here, as kari said over in concord, it's not a disabled vehicle, it's actually a crash which leaves some debris, there's a big rig near the off-ramp for grant street, it's northbound 242 and what commute we have would normally be south coming off of highway 4. no major slowing shows up on sensors except in palo alto, a crew clearing lanes. we'll give you a live look at that coming up. back to you. >> thank you, mike. breaking news out of the south bay, there is damage to at least three businesses this morning, this after an overnight fire in downtown los gatos. >> south dakota's kris sanchez live on the scene this morning. the fire is out now, kris? >> reporter: the fire is out, but you can see here behind me
5:01 am
that there are still some fire crews on scene, starting to bring out some of the debris from inside that middle business where it appears that that fire originated. i just talked with the fire captain in the last 45 minutes, and he said that one business in the middle is where it started, but the businesses on either side are also damaged. this is a salon and also a boutique and some sort of ice cream shop as well. firefighters got the call just after 1:30 this morning and because of the roof structure, the captain tells me it took about an hour for firefighters to put it out, and it had to be unnerving for one business in downtown los gatos, double d's sports grill, which is down the road, but in the same block. it only recently reopened after it was gutted by a fire back in 2016. that business was unscathed. we expect to see three businesses will be out of commission for a while until they can repair some of that smoke and water damage and of course some of the fire damage from the middle building. fire captain says the fire is
5:02 am
still under investigation, but at this point to him, it does not seem to be anything that is blatantly suspicious about it. in los gatos, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much. glad no one was hurt. overnight in los gatos less than three miles away from that scene two fire fighters are were injured fighting this house fire, it started at 11:00 p.m. on overlook road. firefighters arrived to find flames shooting out of the front. firefighters injuries are not considered life-threatening, also two people were evacuated, one taken to the hospital. no word on the cause of that fire. now to hurricane dorian and what is expected to become a major hurricane when it slams into florida over the holiday weekend. forecasters say it will likely become a category 4 storm, the strongest hurricane to hit the state in three decades. a storm that size packs winds of at least 130 miles an hour. overnight, dorian continued to strengthen over warm waters and the forecast changed as well. it's projected the path move

further south to west palm beach. people up and down the atlantic coast are scurrying to get their hands on supplies, we're talking about food, gas, sandbags and plywood to protect windows, and that's not all. >> batteries, flashlights, generators, extension cords anything they can use that are going to give them survival. >> eventually most of interstate 75 which runs from miami to the georgia line will be completely turned into northbound lanes so people can get out. we have much more coming up. kari is tracking the storm. we'll bring you a report from miami at 5:45 this morning. back in the bay area, there is growing outrage over the fires burning in the amazon. organizers have planned a protest this morning outside san francisco's br zillionian consulate. activists are demanding

immediate action after brazil's national research space institute says the number of fires has risen by 85% to more than 77,000 in the last year. about half of those fires have burned through the amazon region with many in just the past month. it's been a month since the mass shooting at the gilroy garlic festival, but authorities have just learned about a new victim, gilroy police say they never knew about one man grazed in the head by a bullet. he received stitches. that brings the total number of victims to 20, and that includes the three young people who lost their lives. friends and supporters of a san francisco man recently shot in the philippines in what many believe was a military-backed murder attempt will talk today about their fact-finding mission. sunset district native brandon lee was critically injured on august 6th. he's a journalist and human rights advocate. today supervisor matt hainey joins the famently members to talk about their family visit to

the hospital bed in the philippines and their visit with government leaders. santa clara county fire department is testing its emergency alert system today. >> it's important that we actually test the system prior to an actual event. there are processes in place for to us put these messages out, and we want to exercise those before lives are literally on the line. >> if you registered with the system or if you're driving through certain parts of the county today, you'll get an alert on your phone at 10:00 this morning. the system is used to communicate fires, evacuations and other emergencies. >> 5:05. some of this year's union supported labor day protests may attract larger numbers, that includes protests against kaiser permanente. the "east bay times" says thousands of kaiser union workers may be out in force right now. a strike is being planned for october. it may include 80,000 workers, which would make it the largest strike in more than two decades. now to a follow-up for you. san francisco's planning commission giving the green

light to a long-term safe parking site for people living in their rvs and cars. if supervisors pass it next month, it would be located near the balboa park b.a.r.t. station on highway 280. the safe overnight parking pilot program could launch at the site for one year as early as november. the lot is expected to serve up to 33 people. new for you this morning, b.a.r.t.'s latest reported upgrades have nothing to do with actual trains but maybe just as important for commuters. if you've ridden b.a.r.t. you've experienced the platform sign telling you the train is 12 minutes away that never actually arrives because it's been canceled or rerouted. some riders even called it a ghost train. "the examiner" reports starting tomorrow platform signs will be more accurate to reflect arrivals and specify when the trains have been canceled, and that's thanks to upgraded software. b.a.r.t. also says that better sign improvements are coming in the near future.
