2019. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning and welcome to "today." it's 7:00 on the west coast on this labor day monday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm sheinelle jones alongside peter exactly lander. >> nice to be with you. savannah and hoda return tomorrow. craig is in florida covering the hurricane for us today. we have to begin with breaking news. a story still developing now in california. >> the coast guard dispatched to rescue dozens of passengers after the boat they were on suddenly caught fire. this is happening off santa cruz island south of santa barbara. blaine alexander joins us with a live report. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. unfortunately we can confirm multiple people died as a result of the fire. this is very much an active rescue scene.

you see the first images of the flames. coast guard officials are working to get people off safely. there were 39 people on board. we understand of those five crew members made it to safety. they were able to be rescued, one with minor injuries. this hour there are 34 people unaccounted for. again, we are learning more the location was near santa cruz island off the coast of santa barbara. as we get our first images' seen the rescue are, we're xnding this boat was a 75-foot boat, the type of boat that's typically used for diving, though it's not exactly clear if it was being used for those purposes this morning. the first tweets came in just before 5:00 a.m., or 8:00 a.m. local time there in new york, and we understand that they were alerts from the coast guard saying that they were dispatching multiple assets out there to try and get people off of the boat that's been fully engulfed in flames. president trump is retweeting local reports about this, but of

course everybody watching this active scene and to find out just how this rescue is going to carry out throughout the rest of the day. carry out throughout the rest of the day. >> so many questions there. thank you. another breaking story is hurricane dorian. it's still churning over the bahamas this morning. it rehains a category five. the strongest hurricane to ever make landfall there. mandatory evacuations have been ordered for florida, georgia, and the entire south carolina coast. our team has spread out to bring you the latest. we start in studio 1a with al. what's it look like now? >> this is a study in frustration. it is not moving. in the last five hours this has been what we've got from the national hurricane center. 115 miles east of west palm beach, 165 miles per hour winds. you could walk faster than the storm moving west at 1 miles per hour.

if you look at the radars there. melbourne to west palm beach. we even have tropical storm watches inland including orlando, a number of theme parks will close this afternoon. we are tracking dorian. it slowly makes its way parallel along the coast tomorrow. still with 140 miles per hour winds as a category four. by wednesday it is parallel to cape canaveral and continues its way up the coast towards the carolinas and cape hatteras by friday morning. a category two storm. then to the north atlantic. here's the problem. with no steering mechanisms out there, high pressure is in control. we are looking at the diameter of the winds. look at it. it's only ten miles offshore from the hurricane-force winds. the eye of the storm is about 40 miles offshore. any kind of wobble east or west will determine how far in the

strong winds get. here's what we look at as far as the effects. damaging winds, power outages possible, downed and uprooted trees stretching from jacksonville down to west palm beach. again, if the system moves further west, that could move inland as well. the storm surge is where you have your most loss of life. four to seven feet from daytona beach to west palm beach. at high tides it will be worse. that's the wall of water four to seven feet on top of a high tide. flooding rains. we are talking about upwards of 15 inches of rain or more from melbourne all the way to cape hatteras. guys, again this is a storm that has no steering currents and so wobbles will happen. i know it's frustrating for people saying why can't we get a track on this? that's because there is nothing steering this. it is at nature's capricious whims where it goes. >> staring at the unknown. thank you, al. dorian is still hitting the bahamas with record fury.

the damage described by officials there as catastrophic. nbc's morgan chesky joins us from nassau. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we are now feeling the outer bands of dorian bringing high winds and heavy rains. i can tell you it is simply nothing to compare for what happened about 90 miles to the north of us at abaco island, the first place to take direct landfall from dorian. people were forced to weather out more than 200 miles per hour winds and pray they could survive. some people posting to social media to please come help rescue them. this morning -- >> please pray for us, everyone. please pray for us. >> reporter: areas of the island under water. as hurricane dorian devastates the bahamas. >> the sea is just spraying on our houses. the winds are howling like we've never, ever experienced before.

>> reporter: the powerful category five storm tearing up docks. >> another one. >> reporter: turning roads into rivers. and ripping the roofs off of homes. >> we need help. please, someone please come help us. >> reporter: the caribbean nation's prime minister says it is now too late for residents to seek higher ground. >> i can only say to them that i hope this is not the last time they will hear my voice. >> reporter: the bahamas government not confirming any casualties, but in this chilling facebook live video. >> pray for us. please, i'm begging y'all. >> reporter: this resident says some of the marsh harbour area vanished into the rising waters. >> some people, the water just took them. >> reporter: after three years of back-to-back storms, 2015's joaquin, 2016's matthew, and 2017's irma, homes are required to be built to withstand category four winds of 150 miles an hour.

days. the timing of the storm disrupting the holiday plans for millions from florida to the carolinas. craig is in jupiter, florida, what are you seeing? craig, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. the conditions have remained fairly stable over the last few hours. wind, occasional rain and occasionally the wind will pick up. this is literally the calm before the storm we have seen those images come out of the bahamas. the fear is that the slow-moving storm lumbering toward the southeast could be pretty bad. this morning the state of florida on edge. >> it doesn't take the turn north, it is coming straight in here at category five. you have to act. >> reporter: many residents here are not taking any chances. they're packing up and heading out with a massive category five hurricane dorian bearing down. >> you just get all your stuff out of here, and then you come back. >> reporter: hurricane warnings now in effect for the florida coast from jupiter inlet north

to brevard county. >> may we have your attention. we have a mandatory evacuation as of 1:00 p.m. >> reporter: in palm beach county, evacuations already ordered for barrier island and mobile homes. chuck swift tied down everything he could and is clearing out. >> who in their right mind would stay in a trailer during a hurricane? >> reporter: marge dombrowski locking up and leaving. >> you need to be able to get off the island, and you may not be able to if you do not leave when you should. >> reporter: president trump, whose mar-a-lago estate is in the evacuation zone, briefed by fema officials on sunday. >> the category five is something that i don't know that i have ever even heard the term other than i know it's there. that's the ultimate. that's what we have, unfortunately. >> reporter: in states farther up the east coast, residents also on high alert. with dorian forecasted to directly impact georgia and the carolinas, the governors of georgia and south carolina ordering millions along the coast to evacuate.

on georgia's tybee island, beachgoers squeezing in a last day of play before planning their escape. nancy emery and her husband moved here two months ago. >> we're leaving, by the way, but we don't know what will be hen we get back. >> up the coast in south carolina, charleston's mayor urging everyone to prepare. >> this is a serious storm, y'all. let's get ready for it. >> reporter: residents hoping they'll be spared. >> hopefully it stays offshore and we get wind and rain. >> reporter: in north carolina, the governor has already declared a statewide state of emergency. >> north carolina has to take this seriously. be ready. >> reporter: back in florida, the governor warning it is too soon for residents to let their guards down. >> please prepare because this thing -- this is a big boy. >> i can tell you that so far people seem to be heeding the warnings from officials in south carolina, georgia, and in

florida. also in florida, the national guard is standing by to respond and a thousand flights have been cancelled already. >> be safe down there. thank you very much. >> now more on the travel nightmare being caused by dorian leading to airport delays coast to coast and florida's massive tourism industry is taking a hit. gabe gutierrez is just north of craig in jenson beach this morning. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you can see the choppy surf behind me. we've noticed the wind really start to pick up here over the last several hours. we have been seeing some rain. a couple airports in florida are shutting down today. more and more cancellations. travel alerts are in effect as this storm begins to scrape the florida coast. this morning, hurricane dorian is causing travel trouble on a holiday weekend. ft. lauderdale and palm beach international airports are shutting down. american airlines added eight

southeastern airports to its travel alert. throughout the region, major airlines are waiving change fees. for travellers, high anxiety on the high seas. port canaveral's terminal is shut down. also the port of miami. >> we started on a disney cruise on saturday. we were supposed to go to tortola, u.s. virgin islands. word came through with the storm and they rerouted us. >> slamming the industry at a crucial time. >> how big was labor day weekend? >> something we're counting on this time of year. it came at a bad time, the storm. >> reporter: in bravard, jim and kathleen boarded up the gift shop they have owned for years. >> i hope it is a glancing blow. >> reporter: coffee shop owner emma kirk patrick is serving up sandbags. she's closed for business today. >> this has probably been the most frustrating storm we've ever dealt with, not knowing

what it is going to do, and not knowing where it'll go or when it'll come. looks ugly. hopefully it'll stay off the coast. all we can do is prepare and hope for the best, right? >> reporter: according to flightaware.com, more than 1,000 flights into and out of the u.s. have been cancelled including more than a hundred at orlando's airport. can where it all came to an end. he wounded more than two dozen and killed seven. >> reporter: as gunfire erupted in texas, families outside a

movie theater dove for cover. >> shooting. >> it's okay. >> they're shooting. >> it's okay. >> reporter: the chaos and carnage carving a 10-mile path of terror. >> all we heard was gunshots going off, so we dropped immediately to the ground. >> reporter: kaden was on the phone with her father as bullets flew overhead. >> she said, daddy, i can see the gunman, i don't know if he's pointing this way or not. you're thinking, that's the last time i'm going to see my daughter. >> reporter: police say the rampage began when seth ator opened fire with an assault style rifle on officers during a routine traffic stop. speeding away, the gunman unloaded on anyone in his path. >> he was raising his gun to my window. i said, there's a gun. there's a gun. he's got a gun. >> reporter: with three law enforcement officers among the wounded, the killing spree includes 15 crime scenes between midland and odessa. the frantic chase raced along a

highway. a local television station was forced off the air. >> we don't know what is going on. >> reporter: investigators say the gunman killed a postal employee, hijacking her van. rosie is her twin sister. >> she was unique. she was special. i don't know what i'm going to do without her, you know? >> reporter: the number of shootings staggering even to the fbi. >> we are now at every two weeks, almost every two weeks, an active shooter in this country. >> reporter: in all, seven people were killed, 21 wounded. the youngest victim, 17-month-old anderson davis. >> when i looked at our daughter, she was covered in blood. so much blood. i couldn't tell where she'd been hit. >> i feel joyful for our daughter, she's okay and we brought her home. very fortunate and grateful. >> reporter: when police cornered the suspect, he was killed in a hail of gunfire, but

you see right there is fully engulfed in flames. we know there were 39 people on board. of those, five crew members were able to make it to safety. they were able to be rescued, one of them with minor injuries. again, unfortunately, 34 people are still unaccounted for at this hour. now, it happened near the santa cruz island, that's just off the coast of santa barbara. the alert first came in a pair of tweets early this morning just before 5:00 a.m. local time or 8:00 a.m. of course on the east coast. from the u.s. coast guard saying that they were dispatching a number of units to try and rescue people off this boat. now, we are learning a little bit about the vessel itself. it's a 75 foot boat, the type of boat that would typically be used for diving purposes but it's not clear if it's being used for that this morning. now, of course a number of questions still. we don't know where the boat was going, whether it was returning to dock. we also of course don't know what started that fire. now, just within the past few minutes or so, president trump has actually been re-tweeting

track, where it is going to go next, is probably what we're concerned about. hurricane watches and warnings, surge watches and warnings, pretty much the entire coast of florida. you're running out of time now if you haven't made preparations you need to heed the advice of your local and state emergency managers you need to take action now. if you're at risk, if you were given mandatory evacuation orders, you should not try to tough it out you should get out >> we've been through this before, where so many people try to tough it out. do you get the sense in this case that people are heeding the warnings this time around? >> well, i hope so this has been a long duration storm. everyone has been on pins and needles to see what happens. you can look to what happened overnight in the bahamas devastating impact the eyewall does not have to come ashore to have that kind of impact on florida. again, get tuned into your local and state emergency managers if they're telling you to evacuate, you should heed their advice you need to keep yourself and

in these images obtained by tmz but not verified by nbc news, emergency crews can be seen responding to the accident the roof of hart's muscle car completely smashed in. hours before the accident, the comedian posted this since deleted video of the car on his instagram page according to the california highway patrol, hart and two others were in the vintage vehicle sunday when it turned on to a malibu area highway the driver immediately lost control. the car then left the road and rolled over down the northern embankment hart was able to escape the wreckage and went to his nearby home to get medical attention. authorities say he suffered major back injuries but did not offer specifics. according to the police report, the driver was jared black, an actor and filmmaker. he was trapped behind the wheel, and firefighters cut the roof off to get him out he also suffered serious back injuries investigators say alcohol was

deaths. they were trying to rescue at least 30 people but we don't know how many of the people are unaccounted for. we'll have more news in 30 minutes.

>> welcome back to "today." it's 8:00 a.m. on the west coast. thank you for joining us on this labor day monday morning. i'm sheinelle jones alongside peter alexande >> it is the eve of hoda's return. she's coming back from maternity leave tomorrow. finally, our "today" family will be whole again. we have our eyes on both coasts this morning. you have the storm battering the bahamas and breaking news out of southern california as well. >> it is a businey morning. we begin with a tragic story off southern california where a large boat caught fire overnight. gadi schwartz joins us with a live report. what are you finding out? >> reporter: sheinelle, we are starting to see some of the boats involved in the rescue coming in to thearbor here. we know five people were rescued and a staggering 34 people are still unaccounted for. all of this happened off the coast of one of the channel islands here on the west coast. from what we understand there was a fire that broke out on the

75-foot vessel. it was a diving vessel that was set up for a multi day excursion. that fire broke out around 3:45 in the morning. by 4:00, 4:30 the entire boat was fully engulfed. fire crews trying to get there, trying to douse the flames, but not put too much water on it. they didn't want the boat to sink. they wanted to possibly board the boat and save people on board. we are told the boat in the last hour or so has sunk. now it is an all out rescue, all out search operation on the water. there is still fog out here. but at this point we still don't know what happened to those 34 that were on board. we expect an update any minute. back to you. >> our hearts go out to any family members involved here. i'm sure they are holding their breath. >> terrifying pictures. thank you very much, gadi. evacuations have been ordered from florida to south carolina as hurricane dorian

draws closer to the east coast. craig has an update on the situation in the bahamas as well as in florida. he joins us now. craig, good morning. >> reporter: hey, peter. good morning. we are in an area where folks were told to get out. if they live in the barrier islands or in a mobile home. millions ordered to evacuate in florida, south carolina, georgia as well. folks seem to be taking the category 5 storm seriously. we have been able to see firsthand dorian's wrath as it slams the bahamas. this morning, paradise lost. hurricane dorian devastating the northern bahamas. >> please pray for us. >> reporter: the slow moving category 5 hurricane tearing through the islands. wind gusts reaching 200 miles per hour and storm surge sweeping people away according some people, thter just

took them. >> reporter: homes left standing ripped apart on the inside. >> please, someone come help us. >> this is the most sad and worst day of my life to address the people of the bahamas. >> reporter: in the u.s., millions on the east coast are preparing for the worst, still unsure of dorian's dangerous path. >> this storm cannot be underestimated. >> reporter: in florida, people racing to get out as the monster storm makes its slow approach. >> mandatory evacuation as of 1:00 p.m. >> never stay when it is this big, this bad. >> reporter: in georgia, mandatory evacuations ordered today along the coast. some people enjoying one last beach day before leaving their homes. >> we don't know what will be here when we get back. >> reporter: in south carolina, costal flooding ahead of dorian's arrival already has some on edge. the governor there ordering nearly a million people to

evacuate. >> we know that we cannot make everybody happy, but we believe that we can keep everyone alive. >> i ask everyone in hurricane dorian's path to heed all warnings. >> reporter: president trump at fema headquarters stressing safety in the face of the powerful storm. >> it's moving very slowly. it is a bad thing, not a good thing. the slower it moves, the bigger it is and the bigger it gets. >> reporter: it is going to be several days before officials are fully able to assess the damage and destruction on the bahamas. meanwhile, here in florida, some 45,000 national guardsmen, airmen, soldiers, they have been activated, ready to respond here in the sunshine state. 1,000 flights have already been cancelled. the majority of those flights out of florida, guys. >> craig, stay safe, buddy. thank you very much. now to the latest on that

mass shooting this weekend in west texas. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer joins us with what we know about the victims and the gunman who drove for miles firing at random targets. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: sheinelle, good morning. the movie theater parking lot behind me is where that final gun battle between police and the suspect took place. as that was playing out, people you mentioned this is a storm having a huge impact already on travel. as craig alluded to more than 1,000 flights into and out of the u.s. have already been cancelled including more than a hundred out of orlando's airport. a couple of airports here in florida are already shutting down today including palm beach international, ft. lauderdale. this could have a ripple effect over the next couple of days as this massive storm comes ashore or stays off the coast of florida. could be a travel mess for many people up the southeastern coast. back to you. >> gabe, thank you.

this way or not. on facetime, you're thinking, that's the last time i'm going to see my daughter. >> reporter: police say the rampage began when seth ator opened fire with an assault style rifle on officers during a routine traffic stop. speeding away, the gunman unloaded on anyone in his path. >> he was raising his gun to my window. i said, there's a gun. there's a gun. he's got a gun. >> reporter: with three law enforcement officers among the wounded, the killing spree includes 15 crime scenes between midland and odessa, as the frantic chase raced along a highway. a local television station was forced off the air. >> we don't know what is going on. >> reporter: during the shooting, investigators say the gunman killed a postal employee, hijacking her van. rosie is her twin sister. >> she was unique. she was special. and i don't know what i'm going to do without her, you know?

>> reporter: the number of shootings staggering even to the fbi. >> we are now at every two weeks, almost every two weeks, an active shooter in this country. >> reporter: in all, seven people were killed, 21 wounded. the youngest victim, 17-month-old anderson davis. >> when i looked over at our daughter, she was covered in blood, like so much blood. i couldn't tell where she had been hit. >> i feel joyful for our daughter, that she's okay and we got to bring her home. very fortunate and grateful. >> reporter: when police did corner the suspect, he was killed in a hail of gunfire, but not before more innocent people lost their lives to gun violence in texas. this morning police are poring over the suspect's criminal history, including the fact he shouldn't have been able to own a gun. two law enforcement sources tell nbc news the suspect was recently fired from his job. that may perhaps be a motive. sheinelle? >> miguel, thank you.

starting this school year, the largest public high schools there are required to report all sports-related concussions to a central database to allow for more accurate tracking of these serious brain injuries in texas, it is the biggest thing going. >> can't lose! >> dropping back >> reporter: friday night lights are brightest. now, the state that takes high school football very seriously has new rules. starting this school year, every large public high school in texas is required to keep track of head injuries, not just in football but in every sport. mark henry says his son suffered a concussion as a sophomore and says his recovery was pretty tough. >> i think another one might be a different story. after two, i don't think i'd let him play football. >> reporter: if zach gets another one this season, the state of texas wants to know about it the rule comes from the university interscholastic league which governs all sports in texas they partnered to study the data. >> we want to look at trends in

concussion, as there are rule changes, safety procedures implemented. everyone wants to make sports safer, and that is clearly something we want to help with >> reporter: researchers will monitor concussion trends, treatment protocols, and return to play data to address privacy concerns, no data can identify the injured athlete. new sports participation numbers show a nationwide decline for the first time in 30 years in 2018, the number of athletes down 43,000 from the previous year high school football participation dropping 30,000 nationwide to its lowest numbers in 20 years. the risk of injuries, some say, could be among the factors driving interest down. >> what time is the game tomorrow >> reporter: gray isn't letting his prior concussion keep him off the field. >> it ain't stopping me. i'm cool now. >> reporter: his mom though has

i )m ... we )re monitoring the breaking news in good morning. it's 8:56. we are monitoring breaking news in southern california. and now we know there are multiple people who died in a boat fire off the coast of santa barbara. these are the first pictures into the newsroom this morning. it's not far from the channel islands u.s. coast guard station where authorities are expected to give an update. again, this is the image coming into our newsroom overnight posted by firefighters showing the boat fully engulfed in flames. crews say there were at least 30 people they were trying to rescue right now many of them unaccounted for. this all happened near santa cruz island in the channel islands near santa barbara off the coast there. no word yet on the exact number
