4:30 on your wednesday morning. taking a peek outside a live look at san francisco from san bruno mountain. giving you a bird's-eye view. nice way to start our morning. good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. thank you so much. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking all the weather that we have throughout the bay area. i see the smile on your face, good thing. >> cooler today but still kind of humid as you get ready to head out the door. you may be feeling that with temperatures now in the low 60s. a live look in walnut creek, mostly clear skies. our temperatures through the day will start to warm up, headed into the upper 70s by 11:00 and we're also going to have a little bit more humidity. i'm tracking a chance of some storms over the sierra and also

that cooler air that will be here, as we go through the week. i'll talk more about that and what's ahead in the forecast. mike, the overnight crews are pretty busy. >> they are. often we talk about palo alto. i wanted to point out here the little red stretch is the posey 2 from the island of alameda to downtown oakland. the overnight closure should be picking up right now. no delays reported. we'll track that. looking at the next couple of nights as well into friday morning, where we'll have again opening hopefully by 4:30. the rest of the bay an easy drive. on the peninsula there is a deadly crash off the roadway, northbound 101 at marsh near the construction zone. i'll show you live pictures as you approach the area. no lanes are currently blocked by that crash but we are tracking the area of course. we'll tell you more. back to you. >> thank you, mike. we begin with developments in the southern california boat fire. the search is now under way for clues into what sparked the early morning inferno on a dive

boat off the coast of santa barbara. last night ntsb investigators looked over another similar boat. >> near the berth where the boat nolyhey remember the 34 people presumed father from los altos. ali wolf heard from investigators and people who are feeling profound grief. >> reporter: flowers, grief and 34 candles burning, one for each person presumed dead after a labor day weekend diving trip came to a fiery end on the water. >> gingerly lighting every candle and just kind of saying good-bye with each candle. >> reporter: an fbi evidence team spent part of the evening closely examining "vision" and "conception," both owned by truth aquatics. 20 bodies have been recovered

from the wreckage. coroner vans were seen leaving been on that boat before. >> reporter: as divers wonder what went wrong. >> i just know this could have happened to me or anyone at any time. >> reporter: a team of 16 experts from the ntsb arrived in santa barbara to lead the investigation. they werview the five crew members who escaped and survived, but their main mission is to figure out how the fire presumably killed 33 passengers and one crew member as they slept belowdeck >> it would be horrific. it's one of the worst imaginable things that could happen to a person, and i think you'd have to be numb to not feel something for these people. >> reporter: ali wolf, "nbc bay area news." >> one of the victims was beloved high school science teacher at the fremont unified school district. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at american high school where that teacher worked. he has more about him and some of the other victims as well.

so sad, bob. >> reporter: it is, laura and marcus and the fremont unified school district tweeted out its condolences for scott chan and his family. he was a physics teacher. chan was on board the "conception" with his daughter, kendra chan, for what was supposed to be a three-day father/daughter excursion, both father and daughter shared a love of exploring the ocean. scott left his job in tech to become a physics teacher because he wanted to help students. according to his linkedin profile, he'd also taught physics at cupertino high in fremont, carlmont high and he often visited his daughter kendra in southern california, where she worked as a wildlife biologist, one of them a dive off santa cruz island two years ago. scott chan prepared for their adventures at pacific scuba divers in sunnyvale.

2 storm is a course that will bring dangerously close to communities in florida up to virginia. this comes after a full-on strike in the bahamas that lasted almost two days. it was a category 5 when it landed there. the storm is to blame for at least seven deaths so far and communities in the bahamas are splintered and others swallowed by the floodwaters there. many residents say they're in disbelief. >> absolute devastation, and it really is heartbreaking, just from the air, it looks completely leveled. >> now from florida through the carolinas, more than 1 million people have been told to evacuate. this morning, bay area emergency responders are now on the ground in dorian's next strike zone, waiting for the impact. 45 members made up of firefighters from 15 east bay agencies flew from menlo park to charlotte last night ahead of the storm. their mission is to search large disaster areas and conduct water

good morning. i'men frommen from at cnbc headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street looks to rebound from yesterday's losses. stocks sinking with the dow falling 285 points and snapping a three-day win streak. the markets reacting to a new round of u.s. and chinese tariffs as well as data showing the manufacturing sector, contracting for the first time in three years raising worries about a possible recession. on today's watch list, reports on the trade deficit and auto sales. apple may be toying with the idea of making its watch band just a little bit smarter. tech crunch says the company has been granted a handful of patents, one describes a sensor that could build an image of wr wearing the watch, a second patent for a band that can adjust itself on the fly so it could detect if the watch is sliding and tighten or loosen based on what you need, even on command. just because the patent has been granted it doesn't guarantee any of these feature also actually make it to production.

commute in pittsburg, skies are clear. it's looking good. we have some mid-60s tgh76 degr. at 11:00 it's going to be 80. a little bit more humidity. let's look at the high there will be some spots hitting 90 degrees and that's gilroy reaching 90 while cupertino up to 80 degrees. a wide range in temperatures up to 91 in antioch and martinez, degrees. hayward reaching 78 degrees. low 80s in palo alto with daly city at 65, and san francisco in the upper 60s. winds coming from the west at 20 miles per hour. still pretty windy. in the north bay, point reyes reaches 63 degrees and we'll be up to 39 in ukiah. sonoma today up to 85. our temperatures all over the place, but this is the pattern we've been in. as we go throughout the day, it will be slightly humid, but we're also watching out for a chance of a few lightning strikes, especially farther to the south, as the monsoonal

moisture comes in. as we track the tropics, we continue to monitor what's going on with hurricane dorian. still off that eastern coast of florida, and continuing to make its way farther off towards the north and east. it is a category 2 and it may possibly make landfall, but it looks like it kind of skirts the east coast, as it moves farther to the north, and by the weekend we'll see that moving back out to the atlantic and farther to the north. our temperas nice one for san francisco, holding steady in the upper 60s with at times some fog rolling ,ou're s. >> that's right, a few minutes ago marcus showed us this shot from our palo alto camera. they shut a couple lights down, getting ready to move the closure north 101 at university, headed from palo alto up toward menlo park you can see the vehicles are ready to move. that's the typical area, with the lights on either side, 101 north and south and you see that bit of slowing. the southbound side there is an

additional set of lights just past marsh on the southbound direction, a deadly crash happened overnight, just about 1:30, it was reported to chp. a car went off the roadway. there's an investigation going on, and so there are some additional lights there. they are completely out of the roadway so for most folks driving through the area it's perceived as another crew and just be careful as you come through the area. sutahey' still there, this could be a distraction. we'll track that for you. meanwhile the rest of the bay as f s case on the peninsula, everything else is moving smoothly and so the getnr toward the bay bridge and the toll plaza, no problem. theasust starting to fill in on both sides, as we wait for the remaining cash lanes to open, still before 5:00. that will happen over the next is aminut 15 minutes. back to you. >> it is 4:50. this morning the jury in the ghost ship fire trial will continue its deliberations. last month three jurors were replaced, forcing the jury to restart those deliberations. the jury is still working to

determine the fate of codefendants derick almena and max harris. each defendant is facing 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter after an oakland warehouse fire killed the same number of people in 2016. a neighborhood in san jose is fed up. they say prostitution is taking over an area where children play in the day, and where johns come out at night. the area is edwards avenue and sherman street south of downtown. a man who doesn't want to be identified says when the sun goes down, alleged sex workers hang out on the corner. he says that he's been waiting for seven years for police to take action. >> we've seen the girls get beat, get shot at by the pimsp th th that's not right. what's the city doing about it? >> we called san jose police. they say they are launching a report john program to reduce human trafficking and prostitution. it's an online forum where people can anonymously report

this activity. happening today, you can weigh in on a fast food battle in walnut creek. the city will meet once again to discuss a new amy's drive-through. a lot of people are worried about the traffic from the fast food chain. if it gets the green light it will be built on main street. this is what it would look like. people living nearby think the dinner amy's says it will present a revised plan at 7n the south ba chp will focus on traffic safety. the agency's safety committee is holding a meeting in san jose at the sobrato center for nonprofits. leaders will talk about the response to pedestrians, collision and other crashes. as of last check, there have been 33 fatal collisions so far this year in san jose. today's meeting starts at 10:00 this morning. okay baseball fans, when you say there was a wizard sighting last night at oracle park, it had nothing to do with harry potter. hall of famer oie there. this s
