seen what it's done to the bahamas. >> the hurricane so large that watches now extend from florida all the way to north carolina. >> and again, we are getting a clearer sense now of the damage in the bahamas. just look at that. those are images just in to us from the islands. 45% of the homes there severely damaged or destroyed. and the death toll is rising. >> al is standing by with the latest on dorian's path, but first, craig is out in the wind and rain out in florida. hey, craig. >> reporter: hoda, savannah, good morning to you. yes, into are floflorida likely direct hit but overnight the winds and rains really picked up here. what they're going to see after the storm leaves this part of florida pales in comparison to what they're seeing roughly 200 miles to our south.

this morning, our first overhead look of the damage, the destruction, the complete devastation that dorian left behind in the bahamas. this morning in the bahamas dorian's destructive power on full display. this first look from the air at the unimaginable devastation the massive hurricane left behind. the prime minister, after his own tour of abaco, describing parts of the islands as decimated with severe damage to homes and businesses. the airport there completely under water. >> our priority at this time is search, rescue, and recovery. >> reporter: rescues are under way, but they're slow going. emergency responders blocked by the widespread destruction. >> it's just overwhelming, you know, to see what's going on. >> reporter: u.s. coast guard choppers supporting the operation. meanwhile, florida already feeling the initial effects of

dorian. overnight, the first bands of pounding rain and severe winds battering cocoa beach. the state dodging a direct hit but still bracing for potentially damaging winds and storm surge. >> what is the chief concern right now for new smyrna? >> chief concern right now is, obviously, the wind is always a factor. costal flooding is also going to be probably where we see more damage occur. >> reporter: new smyrna's fire chief showed us around the evacuation zone. >> new smyrna looks like a bit of a ghost town. >> it is a ghost town because nobody is here. the people chose to leave, which is always a good choice when there is a hurricane offshore like there is here. >> reporter: mayor russ owen saying the city is more than prepared. >> this isn't our first storm and it won't be the last. we're going to get through this. >> reporter: farther up the east coast, georgia and the carolinas now bracing for dorian. >> now is the time to act. >> reporter: millions under mandatory evacuation orders in all three states. in savannah, georgia, hundreds of residents and their pets

boarding buses heading for shelters. >> it's common sense to leave when you have the opportunity to leave. >> reporter: in north carolina, mandatory evacuations issued for the vulnerable barrier islands and parts of the coast. vacationers changing plans days after they arrive. >> we have to leave already, so it's kind of a bummer. >> reporter: charleston, south carolina, closing its airport later today. the mayor telling citizens to take the warnings seriously. >> hunker down and batten down the hatches and be ready. >> craig, obviously, the point is to be ready, but what about after the storm passes? i know there are already concerns about that. >> reporter: yeah, you know, in addition to the storm surge and the costal flooding that the mayor mentioned there, power outages, widespread power outages are a major concern here in florida, georgia, and the carolinas, as well. as you know, lots of these areas filled with trees. the heavy winds bring down those trees on to the power lines. they are prepared for widespread power outages for a number of

days in some of these areas that have been dealing with relentless wind the last few hours, guys. >> craig melvin starting us off. thank you. >> the the question now is where is this thing going and al has the info on the track and the threats ahead. good morning, al. >> we have three tropical systems out there right now. gabrielle, not a worry. ferdinand, bringing rain to texas later. but of course all eyes on dorian. this is the latest from the national hurricane center. it is a category 2 storm, 95 miles east of daytona beach. 105 mile an hour winds. moving north/northwest, steadily picking up speed now at 8 miles per hour. as it weakens, the winds spread out. now, hurricane force winds extend out 60 miles from the center. 175-mile diameter from the tropical force winds. it is now spreading that danger as it makes its way up that coast. here's the path. it starts to make its move still as a category 2. it'll be thursday morning, just

south of charleston. it then turns and heads along, paralleling the coast. may make a landfall near wilmington, but still too early to tell. 95-mile-per-hour winds, possibly another landfall across cape hatteras and then out into the atlantic. here's what we look for as far as the effects. the counterclockwise flow bringing very strong winds from jacksonville, savannah, cape hatteras friday morning, and then it continues on up into norfolk, where they have tropical storm watches up right now. we've also got the storm surge potential. high tides on top of that around lunchtime, and you'll have maybe up to 6 to 9 feet of storm surge from saint simon island to myrtle beach, guys. again, this is going to continue. it is a slow mover and the danger isn't over, especially with the storm surge, torrential rain along the coast, and heavy winds. back to you, savannah. >> al, thank you. now to the latest on the devastating boat fire off the southern california coast. of the 39 people on board, only five survived. this morning, we're learning more about the victims. investigators searching for

answers. nbc's national correspondent miguel almaguer joins us with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. when it became clear to the search teams there would be no survivors, the rescue effort became a recovery. in those chilly waters behind me at this very hour search teams are looking for the missing. 20 bodies have been recovered but 14 people remain unaccounted for, this as investigators also look for the cause of that deadly fire. the 75-foot diving boat, the conception, engulfed in flames early monday morning, now sits at the bottom of the ocean, along with clues as to what caused the deadly blaze. 33 passengers and one crew member, who were sleeping below deck in these tight quarters, now all presumed dead. >> mayday, mayday! >> reporter: the fire exploding so quickly, the sheriff says the victims never had a chance to escape by these stairs or this

emergency exit in time. >> so the fire had grown so dramatically, there was no way anyone could get out from below deck. >> that's what appears happened. >> reporter: the tragedy is leaving family members struggling to come to terms with the unbelievable loss. >> my daughter, alexandra kurtz, was on the conception, and she died. >> reporter: sherri mcdunnis' 25-year-old daughter, seen in this safety video, was the only crew member sleeping below deck. >> the thing that is holding me together is that she has left this world doing something that she loved. >> reporter: also among the dead, a family of five, three daughters who loved to dive on a trip with their dad and stepmother. according to the sheriff, five crew members were on the top deck of the boat when the fire broke out on the second deck, in or near the galley. below, both exits were apparently blocked by flames. >> i can't breathe. >> reporter: the surviving crew

members jumping overboard, as the inferno exploded. this footage of conception shows the spacious deck and the tight sleeping quarters where bunks were stacked three rows high. charlie cane had been a passenger before. >> if that bunk area was filled with smoke and people couldn't see, just thinking about it gives me the shivers. >> reporter: this morning, a tragedy at sea amid an ocean of heartbreak. the sheriff told us that he believes this fire exploded so quickly there was literally nothing the crew could have done. as a matter of fact, a good samaritan who rescued the crew said the crew did try to help the passengers below but there was simply nothing they could do. the fire spread so quickly. savannah? >> miguel, thank you. in the wake of the mass shootings and growing pressure to act, the nation's largest retailer, walmart, has announced big changes when it comes to the

sale of guns and am nigsz. nbc's tom costello is outside one of the company stores in northern virginia. hey, tom good morning >> reporter: good morning. so this decision is very big ammunition is no longer going to be sold at walmart for handguns and also for assault style weapons. this decision comes as the number of mass shootings in this country, multiple people shot, as that number hits nearly 300 so far this year the word from walmart's ceo to employees, the status quo is unacceptable >> go, go, come on >> reporter: citing recent shootings, including those that claimed the lives of two dozen people at or near walmarts in el paso, texas and southaven, mississippi. now, the retail giant is taking steps it hopes will curb gun violence, halting the sale of ammunition that can be used in large capacity clips in military style weapons, stopping the sale

of handgun ammo and ending all sales in alaska. walmart stopped selling the ar-15, a decision from 2015. walmart calling on congress to strengthen background checks with the company's ceo writing to congressional leaders, we believe we have been doing our part to make the country safer, but congress and the administration need to do their part, as well. customers have mixed feelings about walmart's latest efforts. >> i don't think it needs to be this convenient to buy ammunition >> there's too many people that enjoy the shooting and hunting i believe it'll come back to bite them. >> reporter: the powerful gun lobby is pushing back. the nra argues walmart's changes won't make anyone safer. in a statement, it says walmart decided to victimize law-abiding americans, adding that leaders should focus on crime, violence, and mental health. >> not everybody is going to do anything wrong, but the select few that ruin it for everyone. i think walmart is taking a strep in the right direction. >> reporter: the hot-button

bill expanding background checks, and people in favor of stronger gun control are trying to put pressure on senate majority leader mitch mcconnell. check out this editorial in the "washington post" out this morning. it demands mcconnell do something. it lists the names of victims of 29 high-profile mass shootings in a new interview senator mcconnell was clear. he wants to be sure of the president's support for whatever the senate takes up but the white house in turn wants to make sure it has bipartisan support for the plan before the president goes out and sells it. president trump told reporters he is looking at different things, like new red flag laws and possibly a bill that strengthens some background checks, although not as much as democrats want to see. >> hallie, another topic, there is some controversy over finding for the border wall with mexico and funding coming from the pentagon what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: yeah, the pentagon says it'll redirect $3.6 billion in military construction money to pay for the wall that the president, remember, always said mexico would pay for

this move is going to affect 127 different construction projects, although the defense department says those will be delayed, not cancelled all together democrats are furious. house speaker nancy pelosi is calling the decision irresponsible, and senator chuck schumer is accusing the president of trying to boost his own ego by cannibalizing military money to build the border wall. >> hallie jackson at the white house for us, thank you. we have breaking news from overseas this morning. hong kong's chief executive, carrie lam, has announced that the governme will formally withdraw that controversial extradition bill it sparked months of demonstrations there the bill would have allowed hong kong residents to be sent to mainland china for trial that led to massive protests that became increasingly violent in recent weeks. lam also said this morning the government would not accept other demands from protesters, including an independent inquiry into alleged police misconduct against those demonstrators. we do have some good news to share this morning we've been covering the story since last april the 5-year-old boy who was

back now 7:30 on this wednesday morning, september the 4th. the wind whipping in new smyrna beach, florida, this morning just a taste of what's to come from hurricane dorian for millions on the east coast. >> we're watching the track very closely. al has the updated forecast in a moment we want to check in with craig, right there in the thick of it in florida how is it looking down there >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you the winds and the rains, they have picked up they've continued overnight into the morning here in new smyrna beach. here's the thing, guys, the storm surge, the costal flooding, that remains a concern. those widespread power outages that we talked about at the top

of the hour also a concern we've got some new numbers right now. 10,000 homes and businesses in florida without power so far that is a number that's only expected to climb. 10,000 right now georgia, north carolina also expecting widespread power outages, as well, as the storm continues to move its way up the coast. meanwhile, what we are seeing here and what we are likely to see in the aftermath of dorian will pale in comparison to what they're dealing with in the bahamas. i want to show you a picture that really sort of captures what happened there. this is a before and after this is grand bahama island before dorian and after dorian you can get a good look of just what the storm did also, this morning, for the first time, an overhead look at

sheer devastation in the bahamas. the death toll right now at seven as the search and rescue operation continues. that's a number that is expected to climb on two of the islands, 45% of the homes and businesses have been damaged or destroyed. the prime minister there describing the scene, at one point, using the word "decimated" to describe what dorian has left behind the search and rescue effort continuing with the help of the u.s. coast guard we'll continue to stay on top of the situation in florida we'll have another live report in a few minutes, guys. >> looking at the picture makes you heartsick. craig, thank you very much. with dorian finally on the move, the question is, where is the storm headed al is back with a closer look at the track of the storm. >> thanks so much. let's take a look, first of all, this is the latest on dorian we're expecting an update coming up in about 20 minutes from the national hurricane center. it has 105-mile-per-hour winds it is moving north/northwest at 8 miles per hour, now a category 2 storm. you think, okay, as it is starting to weaken, those winds will diminish, and you won't have a problem

the problem is, as the system weakens, the winds actually expand out wednesday, we are looking at tropical force winds extending out 80 miles from the center we move into friday, category 2 storm, it extends out 105 miles, those tropical force winds we go to sunday, 140 miles out as a category 5. then yesterday, it drops down to a 2. the winds expand out even further to 175 miles from the center that is where we are now here's what we're looking at as far as impacts jacksonville today, 30 to 60-mile-per-hour winds, storm surge of 3 to 5 feet, and rainfall of 2 to 4 inches. this is the tropical force winds field. for tomorrow, charleston, 50 to 85-mile-per-hour winds along the coast. 4 to 7 foot storm surge. look how far in the tropical force winds will go. rainfall, 8 to 15 inches storm surge is going to be a big issue. we move into friday morning. wilmington, 55 to

judge to keep his identity under wraps. in a defamation lawsuit settled several years ago by virginia giuffre, the man's plea coming as giuffre is set to appear in a courtroom this morning her legal team is expected to call for the release of thousands of pages of documents associated with her 2015 defamation lawsuit against epstein's one-time girlfriend and confidante ghislaine maxwell. for years, the british socialite denied accusations she was epstein's chief enabler. >> i made a statement. thank you. >> reporter: now, attorneys for john doe who may be mentioned in the sealed documents have written a letter to the judge, saying he fears his reputation may be damaged by unproven allegations of impropriety adding, doe lacks specific knowledge about the content of the sealed material, but it is clear that these materials implicate the privacy and reputational interests of many persons other than the two primary parties to this action giuffre has already accused some very high profile men of

good wednesday morning. right now as we take a live look outside in san francisco, it's foggy across the bay, and sunny in the city. we are going to see some cool temperatures as that fog lingers near the coast. inland it's going to feel more humid and hot in some areas, reaching the low 90s. in san jose expect a high of 83 degrees. we'll see the humidity dropping and temperatures falling a few more degrees going into the weekend with saturday's high temperure in the low 80s and that's in some of the warmer spots. it does go up a few more degrees into the first part of next week. in san francisco highs in the upper 60s continuing into saturday, slightly warmer for sunday as well as monday, and we are also going to have some high humidity today decreasing as we go into the weekend. headed over toik tracking a lot of alerts earlier this morning. >> that's right, kari. the one in fremont has cleared.

one of the major differences between right now and 12 hours ago, then, the rain and the wind somewhat intermittent. right now, it is constant. the rain and winds in new smyrna and up and down the florida coast, battered. widespread power outages also starting here in florida 10,000 homes and businesses reportedly without power so far. that is a number that is only expected to climb as the days go on these relentless winds bring down trees on power lines. that's one of the jor ncns so is the storm surge, a major concern. not just here in florida, in georgia, in south carolina, where states of emergency have been declared, and close to 2 million people have been evacuated. while there is some damage and destruction that's expected here, nothing like what they have experienced roughly 200 miles to the south in the bahamas. 45% of the homes and businesses on two of those islands damaged

or destroyed the death toll right now at seven. search and rescue efforts continue there that is a number that is also expected to climb. the coast guard now part of the search and rescue there on the islands of the bahamas again, as we get a bird's eye view, the first look from above of what happened there, as hurricane dorian sat on top of the bahamas for more than 40 hours. nothing like that is expected here in florida, as this state is expected to avoid a direct hit. georgia and south carolina also in the storm's path, and they are bracing for the effects of dorian there, as well. guys >> craig, thank you. a lot of people may be looking at this and saying, it is a category 2. it is being downgraded they're letting their guard down that is not a great idea at all. tell us the latest on dorian's path, al. >> all right, guys thank you. the latest from the national

hurricane center just in at 8:00 95 miles east/northeast of daytona beach. moving north/northwest at 8 miles per hour the watches and warnings extend. talking from west palm beach all the way up to wilmington for hurricane warnings hurricane watches up to cape hatteras we have tropical storm warnings and watches stretching from norfolk all the way back into central florida. so, really, the danger is not done yet here's the path we see as you can see, the tropical force winds extend out 175 miles. by thursday afternoon, it is just south of charleston, bringing storm surge and rain. friday morning, it is around wilmington and continues on past cape hatteras and moving out into the atlantic by early saturday morning here are the effects damaging winds we're talking tropical force winds from melbourne, jacksonville, savannah, charleston, wilmington, cape hatteras, and norfolk by friday morning. we're talking also storm surge 6 to 9 feet from jacksonville beach all the way on up to north

>> definitely. there's so many social media influencers out there that are going to be disappointed that likes are going away because they will feel like that is their worth. >> savannah, i bet a bunch of middle school kids are secretly so happy if this goes away because it'll take burdens off of them. there are studies out there. >> the study referenced in the piece was the effect that it has differently on young girls rather than young boys what it was saying is that it is not just that social media is bad for children or teenagers. it is that the content they're encountering in the space can be super harmful. for young girls, a lot of times, that means a completely unrealistic and unattainable body image they're seeing. people are filtering, using these apps like facetune to completely edit their bodies, and then they're seeing hundreds of thousands, millions sometimes, of likes that sort of just reiterates that's what people like. for that to be taken away might make a huge difference. >> you inhabit this online world more than we do.

you tell us about what is happening. what is your advice, especially for people starting out on social media or trying to help their kids navigate it >> something that is important is using it to actually really connect with people. our show, "stay tuned," started on snapchat, and it's a space that has no likes or followers you're using it to communicate with friends and you can use any app in that same way another thing from the study i referenced is you might actually be suffering from mental health issues because of a lack of sleep associated with how much you're on your phone at night, scrolling through social media i know we all do that. it can be extremely difficult for young kids regulate that for your kids. finally, and probably most importantly, is making sure that, especially young girls, do not think their worth or value is associated with these likes or followers >> it seems like a popularity contest. >> sure. >> imagine that every day and at home, looking at that all the time it is one thing to have it at school but to bring it home is tough. >> absolutely. they're seeing their friends hanging out without them >> yeah. >> you have to keep them in real life and not in this digital world. >> fomo.

finally gone when i was invited to go to this, i was warned that nobody would probably turn up because the french like to go away in august there'd be a dozen or two people there. actually, just a huge crowd swelled up out of nowhere and headed towards the commemoration. incredibly moving. they were all ages the flags were flying. all this time afterwards, the extraordinary emotion around the liberation now, i feel, i finally sort of unearthed what he did. to see some of the older villagers come and thank me for my father's service, some of them with tears in their eyes, it is a silk parachute from a shot down canadian airman's family hiding an allied serviceman was a huge risk. the whole family would have been shot if they had been found out. the fact my father and his men came through when they did and got families out of an incredibly dangerous situation
