>> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. hi, everybody. welcome to "today" on a friday morning. nice to have you with us. i guess the packers are ready for football. >> no kidding. darius rucker had this great quote. my favorite two seasons are football season and waiting for football season. it is here, and everyone is ready for it. >> the weather once again is a top for us. hurricane dorian skirting the east coast and on the move north. torrential rain and high winds are the features of this one. our team is standing by to bring you the latest. we'll start with al because the track is so important. good morning. >> good morning. let's get right to it. you can see it is spinning. it has not made landfall yet. it is currently a category 1 storm. 30 miles south/southwest of cape hatteras, north carolina. 90-mile-per-hour winds. its forward speed is kicking up,

moving northeast at 14 miles per hour. as we look at the watches and warnings, all the way to st. john's, we have got tropical storm watches, hurricane watches for newfoundland and nantucket for tropical storm warnings. exndinfrom ocean city, maryland, to norfolk. and warnings for cape hatteras. we are watching this closely. in fact, cape hatteras will be the last shot at a landfall. tropical storm force winds extend 220 miles from the center of the storm. it is asymmetrical, so the 220 miles don't extend to the inland parts. wind gusts, 46 in washington. look for 41-mile-per-hour gusts in wilmington. it then possibly makes landfall cape hatteras, continues moving into the atlantic. the next land masses that will feel some effects are going to be from eastern long island, montauk, on into nantucket, with winds and then it pushes out into the atlantic. that's the good news. then it is finally done with. here are the impacts.

a flood threat, rapid rises for streams. drainage for norfolk to the carolinas. heavier rain for cape cod. rainfall amounts up to 5 inches. strong winds extend all the way up the coast. then it is out of here. it is about 50 miles away from nag's head, north carolina. that's where we find nbc's catie beck. how are conditions there? >> reporter: good morning, al. hurricane dorian has made landfall in north carolina. we can see the impacts of it coming down now. torrential rain. extremely strong wind gusts on the outer banks. the conditions here may be getting worse before they get better. we are really approaching the peak of the storm at this point. authorities say they are still worried about storm surge and telling everyone to stay indoors and hunker down.

the carolinas in the crosshairs of hurricane dorian. the worst of the storm bearing down on the coast overnight, bringing torrential rain. threatening storm surge and whipping win from myrtle beach to the outer banks. officials urging residents to shelter in place. >> everyone needs to stay in a safe place and off the roads. >> don't go outside. things are flying around in the air. the water is getting deeper. >> reporter: dorian churning over vulnerable, low-lying communities. one area north of wilmington already flooded as the storm approached. dorian's outer bands forming funnel clouds along the shore. one of the tornadoes ripping through an rv park in north carolina, lifting mobile homes and cars off the ground. >> my camper was tilting over. i said, lord, what in the world? >> reporter: now just piles of debris. >> whoa!

>> reporter: in south carolina, a driver abandoning an suv after driving too close to the raging surf. others riding out the storm in shelters. >> hopefully our homes aren't flooded. that's what we're hoping. >> reporter: candice sitner says she was forced to leave her south carolina home, still damaged after last year's hurricane season. >> we got approved to get it fixed, and here the another hurricane. >> reporter: all too familiar with what has become an annual drill. you were in this shelter last year. >> last year. >> reporter: same thing all over again. >> same thing every year. >> reporter: authorities start enforcing a curfew last night at 8:00. they say that will continue through noon today giving authorities a chance to survey the outer banks, see the damage and what roads are passable. they are hopeful dorian will make its way out to sea. al? >> catie, thank you so much. of course, we'll continue to track it and bring you updates throughout the morning. guys? >> al, thank you. now, we are going to turn to the bahamas, where the death toll from dorian climbed higher overnight.

this amid around the clock recovery efforts. for thousands of survivors, help cannot come fast enough. morgan chesky traveled to one of the hardest hit areas by the storm. morgan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. dorian just devastated abaco island, but marsh harbour took a direct hit from the hurricane. we flew in just hours after the airport re-opened, witnessing the aftermath. thousands of people still stranded with little food, water. all anxious to evacuate. this morning, a firsthand look at the devastation in marsh harbour. a small seaside town in the bahamas left beaten and battered by hurricane dorian. >> we have nothing left. all of our homes are destroyed. we have nowhere to go. >> reporter: we flew in for a firsthand look just hours after the airport reopened. greeted by dozens of storm

survivors, desperate to get out. >> we have suffered quite a bit. don't allow us to suffer any more by staying here another night. >> reporter: among those waiting to leave, charles moss and his girlfriend. >> marsh harbour is home? >> marsh harbour was home. we have nothing left. we're trying to find support at this time. >> reporter: on every street, in every direction, dorian's impact inescapable. the airport may be open, but you can see the roads are still completely covered in water on a lot of areas of abaco island, making the relief effort that much harder. >> let's go. >> reporter: days after the storm moved through, rescue still under way. this family pulled from their attic one by one, just in time. u.s. customs and coast guard helicopters flying non-stop search and rescue missions. gary lewis, his wife, and one-month-old baby were saved by a coast guard chopper thursday. >> water on the roof on all the other houses. i had to hold my baby up for an

hour or two, just to keep her from drowning. >> reporter: other survivors still in a state of shock. >> we lost everything. right now, we just, like, are in survival mode. >> looks like we were bombed. everything is gone. >> reporter: cruise ships recruiting from their normal routes to bring aid. thousands of meals being delivered to those in need. a lifeline for survivors who are down but not out. >> first thing we have to do is treat one another, take care of one another, because help is coming. >> reporter: help is on the way not just from the cruise lines but individuals and relief agencies. the biggest challenge, reaching inaccessible spots. >> those people are so resilient, to see them. >> look what they're dealing with. help needs to be coming fast. if people want to help, and i know a lot of our viewers have big, big hearts, you can go to redcross.org and, of course, donate. it'd be very helpful. it'd be very helpful.

craig is here with another story, a terrifying one for anybody who has flown before. >> terrifying indeed ladies, good morning to you. a major scare at miami international airport. an american airlines employee arrested and charged with sabotaging a plane that was about to take off with 150 people on board. tom costello covers aviation for us tom, what more do we know about this >> reporter: good morning. this happened back in july the mechanic is expected today in a federal court in miami. the fbi launched an investigation, with the help of federal air marshals, that not only leads to serious charges but highlights a very real threat to aviation security. abdul-majeed marouf ahmed alani is a 31 year veteran of american airlines with no reported history of trouble on thursday, the airline mechanic was charged with

damaging, destroying, or disabling an aircraft by tampering with the air data module, or adm, which reports critical data to pilots. a boeing 737 like this one was scheduled to fly from miami to the bahamas on july 17th when the pilots noticed a problem on the ground, aborted the flight, and returned to the gate 150 passengers boarded another plane and completed their trip overnight, american airlines released a statement in part, we are taking this matter very seriously. at the time of the incident, the aircraft was taken out of service, maintenance was performed, and after an inspection to ensure it was safe, the aircraft was returned to service american notified federal law enforcement. according to court documents, the man said his intention was not to cause harm to the aircraft or its passengers instead, he said he was upset over a long simmering dispute between the airline and the mechanics union, and this affected him financially he tampered with the plane to have the flight cancelled to get overtime work. no matter the motive or intent, employees always pose a potential security concern

>> the greatest vulnerability is always the insider threat. the challenge with the insider is they know the system. >> reporter: no indication which was terrorism related. no indication. it appears to stem out of this frustration over a five-year labor dispute. nbc reached out to alani's family and got no response >> this idea of an insider attack, how much of a concern is that for federal authorities >> in 2017, the house homeland security committee issued a report warning about the dangers of inside jobs or inside threats involving an airline or airport employee every time i talk to the tsa, and even the airlines, they will tell you, insider threats remain a very top security concern. >> all right tom costello for us in d.c thanks, tom.

there have been new attacks on u.s. troops in afghanistan. one killed in a car bombing and others wounded in an explosion there. peter alexander is on the story this morning good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. it has another violent stretch in afghanistan with three suicide attacks this week. this year the deadliest for u.s. troops in combat in afghanistan since 2014 a car bomb in kabul yesterday leaving one american soldier and at least ten civilians dead, dozens injured another explosion hours later hurt more members of the military, along with some two dozen civilians. a child was also killed. it is the most recent in a series of attacks by the taliban. coming as washington is preparing to unveil a new agreement with the group jim mattis speaking on msnbc,

calling it a signature move of the taliban. >> they hate ballots and love bullets and bombs. the challenge to the diplomats is enormous, for our folks trying to end this. >> reporter: the proposed deal would see the phase withdraw of u.s. troops from afghanistan 5,000 american troops over 135 days in return for the taliban agreeing to enter peace talks with the afghan government there are currently about 14,000 american troops in afghanistan the u.s. has had troops in the region since 2001 when it first took on the taliban regime for harboring the terrorists behind the september 11th attacks nine former u.s. senior diplomats warned this week that afghanistan could slide into an all out civil war and, again, become a sanctuary for terrorists if the trump administration withdrew all u.s. forces without a peace agreement between the taliban and afghan government the state department declined to comment. savannah and hoda? >> peter, thank you. also breaking overnight, the long-time leader of zimbabwe, robert mugabe has died he was a former guerrilla chief. he took power after the end of white minority rule in 1980. he presided over a country whose early promise was eroded by economic turmoil, disputed elections, and human rights

good friday morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. a live look in san francisco, some low clouds rolling by and wale get some clearing today, but it's going to be cool and breezy there in the city, reaching up to 67 degrees. 85 will be the high in napa, while oakland reaches 73 degrees. we have some upper 70s expected in san jose, and some upper 80s in antioch, as we go into the weekend, we'll be cooling off with some upper 70s tomorrow. >> that's your latest weather, guys. al, just ahead, we'll turn our attention back to dorian we'll have a live update from the hard-hit outer banks plus, we'll talk about the storm's impact on the weekend for a lot of people in the south all the way up to maine. then an nbc news exclusive the husband charged in that missing mom mystery in connecticut answering questions in his first national interview. plus, a new arrest tied to the case first, this is "today" on nbc.

good morning to you. it is 7:26. i'm laura garcia. fire fight irs are trying to determine what sparked a deadly overnight fire in a san jose mobile home park that started about midnight just south of highway 237 near the al viso salt pond. neighbors say the woman who died is in her late 50s and also say she was disabled and confined to a wheelchair. they say a man lived at the home as well. it's not clear if he was there at the time or safely made it out. want to switch gears and check the forecast with meteorologist kari hall. >> we're getting ready for some cooler temperatures and clouds rolling by the south bay as the sun peeks out. we'll start out with low 60s

into the afternoon. we're going to see a high of 79 degrees and some low 80s for parts of the tri-valley, some upper 80s for the inland east bay and up to 85 today in napa. the weekend will be slightly cooler especially tomorrow with more clouds moving in and gusty winds, reaching up to the upper 70s in some of the warmest spots and low 80s on sunday as we get more sunshine. for san francisco expect it to be windy and cool with some fog and drizzle, temperatures reaching 65 tomorrow and low 70s for sunday. let's get an update on the commute from mike. >> air traffic bogging down around high street. relief a crash causing this at 23rd but got on it the shoulder after about ten minutes in the roadway. the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights are on, but not so bad down the east shore freeway and the south bay kicks in, 87 slowing toward downtown and northbound 280 boggs down around highway 17 and the 880

7:30 now on this friday morning, september 6th, 2019. the impact of dorian set to be felt today from the carolinas all the way up the coast to new england. >> let us turn back to nbc's catie beck. catie is on the outer banks of north carolina, where the storm has been causing a lot of problems. what's the scene like now, catie? >> reporter: craig, we are feeling the impacts now. torrential rain. extremely strong wind gusts on the outer banks. the conditions may get worse before they get better. we are really approaching the peak of the storm now.

we are seeing the conditions deteriorate. now one piece of good news we did hear from officials, there were no storm-related injuries overnight. they didn't have to make any rescues. minimal power outages on the outer banks as well. the big concern moving forward will be storm surge. four to seven feet is what's expected on the outer banks. authorities are keeping a mandatory curfew in place until about noon today to give them time to get around, see what damage may have been done overnight, what streets are passable and the conditions aren't good for anyone to travel in. they are urging anyone who remained on the outer banks to stay off the roads, stay inside and hunker down. they are hoping the storm will pass sometime mid-morning today and it will be out to sea. craig? >> catie beck for us in nags head, north carolina. al will have more in a few moments. first, the missing

connecticut mother who vanished three months a three months ago nbc news sat down exclusively with her husband stephanie gosk has the story. >> good morning. jennifer dulos disappeared in may and hasn't been seen since there were clues she was the victim of a serious assault. her estranged husband and his girlfriend pleaded not guilty to previous charges now, they face an additional charge of tampering with evidence after investigators say one of them admitted to not being truthful with police. >> reporter: the estranged husband of jennifer dulos is facing a charge of tampering with evidence in connection with the case on wednesday, fotis dulos left jail hours after his arrest, posting a $500,000 bond. >> it is an exhausting fight i love my children that's about it. >> reporter: fotis, who maintained his innocence

throughout the investigation of his wife's disappearance, says he'll plead not guilty to the new charge. >> did you have anything to do with jennifer's disappearance? >> i did not i'd like to leave it at that. >> you can say that much >> absolutely. >> reporter: prior to the arrest, fotis spoke to "dateline" in his first national interview. >> do you believe jennifer is alive? >> i do. >> it's all circumstantial evidence or common understanding -- >> i'd like not to understand this, per my attorney's advice. >> in your mind, she's alive >> yes >> reporter: meanwhile, on thursday, fotis' girlfriend turned herself in to police. she was also charged again with evidence tampering >> i'd like you to remember that michelle is presumed innocent, and she should be.

we are prepared to let judgment rest in a jury's hands >> reporter: according to her latest arrest warrant, troconis admitted she had not been truthful in previous conversations with authorities she's also provided police information about a red toyota pickup truck that she says fotis borrowed for an employee and drove on the day jennifer vanished in the days following jennifer's disappearance, the warrant states fotis urged the owner of the truck to replace the seats in the vehicle and get rid of them so they would not be found. the owner did replace the seats but kept the originals eventually turned them over to police according to the arrest warrant, detectives found blood on the original passenger seat of the truck. dna testing later determined it belonged to jennifer dulos police also have evidence fotis had the truck washed and detailed when asked why troconis thought fotis would have cleaned the truck, she said, well, you showed me the picture of the blood and the door, it is because the body of jennifer, at some point, was in there

to start camp grace. is this a camp for the incarcerated, or is this a camp to the kids? >> for me, i think it benefits everyone it is a camp for the kids. typically, when a child visits their incarcerated parent, they don't have the one-on-one time visiting has strict rules. one hug and kiss at the beginning and the end. the fathers benefit, giving them a little bit of normalcy >> the fact these fathers remained discipline free and have earned this makes this prison safer that means every single correctional officer that walks through these gates is safer today because of this camp >> i had a lot of fun. >> not only that, i guarantee you, not one of these children will ever spend one day incarcerated >> reporter: tammy foss is the warden do you get the sense that there is a shift in this country regarding how we should view and treat inmates? >> i do. since i started in 1996, it's been a huge shift. we'd almost warehouse inmates. it is so important to give the rehabilitation part. their crime doesn't define who they are, and they have the
