us. i'm garvin thomas. vianey arana has all the good news about your microclimate forecast. >> i think folks are going to like it. good morning, by the way, thank you for joining us on an early saturday morning. have you had your cup of coffee yet? >> i'm on number three. >> current temperatures in the 60s, we're so comfortable but we're a little cloudy, look at the south bay, 62. you can see the clouds throughout the entire bay area. check out the east bay. in san francisco, that marine layer might even catch some drizzle. 54 degrees in the north bay. we can all thank this to a nearby system that's going to keep us a little bit cooler. some areas are running about 10 degrees below normal for this time of year, including san jose, only expected to climb into the mid 70s. that is comfortable weather. we're going to get a good mix of sun and clouds.

and what i'm monitoring is the winds that are expected to kick up tonight. i'll let you know which spots are going to be the windiness coming up in 10 minutes. >> sounds perfect, thank you very much. we begin this morning with an event in san francisco. we got a live look at chase center for you this morning. this is where metallica ushered in a new era last night playing before a packed crowd. the first ever event at the warriors new home and a good test run on traffic flow. metallica and 72 members of the san francisco symphony filled the arena with music. 20 years after their first collaboration, it is still an exhilarating performance. >> you better be on your game and so it's -- there'ses a dare element of that that's sort of

before in the wild -- not necessarily in the wild burks just -- but just to the south and north of here. i can't imagine. >> park officials say neither of the cats showed any aggressive behavior, avoid walking or biking alone in those areas at dawn or dusk. a juror in the ghost ship trial is talking about how they reached their decision. millard billings was an alternate juror. he says the jury was very close to being hung on both defendants. they ended up acquitting max harris but couldn't come to a decision on derek alameda. >> i thought no one is going to win in this thing. >> in the end, two of the 12

jurors did not think alameda was guilty. they will decide if there will be a new trial or a plea deal. police arrested the man they say killed a bikist last thursday. it happened around 2:00 p.m. police say 26-year-old jessie agular crashed his suv into a truck and continued through the intersection hitting and killing a cyclist. on the peninsula, the search is on for vandles who targeted school maintenance truck. it happened on wednesday night. the vandles smashed the windows, slashed tires and ripped out headlights. nothing was taken. the superintendent says they are now looking to buy surveillance cameras at the school. we got new details in a

deadly south bay shooting. today, they spowe spoke with wi have here's the story. >> reporter: according to a food max employee, he and police officers watched the video from their security camera that faces the parking lot. the victim walked into the supermarket wearing a baseball cap and walked out 15 minutes later. he seems to have an argument with someone, and then the victim falls on the ground. police were called shortly thereafter. >> they found an individual that was suffering from at least one gunshot wound. he was pronounced deceased there. >> this happened in the middle of the day, about 12:45. a large part of the parking lot was correspond dinned off. >> we drove into the one by the motorcycle, that's the only

entrance, and everything else was blocked off. >> reporter: there are lots of homeless people in this parking lot, but never felt threatened. one customer says he's concerned because a friend sometimes sleeps in his vehicle here. >> this is my friend's car, man. i'm trying to find out where he's at. >> for the second time in a week, thieves robbed an apple store on the peninsula. it happened thursday night inside the hillsdale shopping center. three men stormed the store and stole 40 items before hopping into a get away car. investigators say they're trying to work with apple to better secure the merchandise trying t make it harder for thieves to grab and go. >> apple puts out product that is are extremely popular and it makes sense that if criminals are going to target products, they want things they know will be attractive and popular when they go to try and sell them.

>> an apple store in birwas als robbed last week. an outpouring of grief in santa barbara. the community came together to honor victims of "the conception" boat fire on wednesday. meanwhile, we're learning more new information about the investigation, the sheriff says it appears all 34 people killed died from smoke inhalation. they were sleeping in tight quarters beneath the deck and they were trapped. investigators have moved a barge and a crane to bring up the boat. a death in the san jose mobile home park, a disabled woman died in her home when it caught fire early yesterday morning. it happened near 273.

neighbors expressed some concerns to investigators. they say the on sight caretaker was gone when the fire started and they think materials that the caretaker kept at the home are what started the fire. one neighbor said he tried to save the woman when he saw the flames. >> it was a torch that was shooting up in the sky. and when we went to the back door, it was only black smoke. we couldn't go in there. >> the fire department continues to investigate and there have been no arrests in the case. much more ahead for you on today in the bay. coming up, new disturbing information about vaping. what health officials are saying about several deaths linked to it. if you're flying out of town in the coming weeks, a warning, work is being done at sfo that could impact your flights.

linked to vaping. the first california death reported in los angeles yesterday. the cdc and a local health department sounded the alarm about e-cigarettes. here's reaction to that warning. >> cassidy started vaping at 14. she's 19 now, and says she's not worried about how it may affect her health. >> think about how many cases of bad health there are that came from cigarettes. you give me that many cases about a vap, then i'll be concerned. >> the cdc is concerned. the cause of the cases is still a mystery. >> if you use a low dosage it's more of a placebo effect. >> the illness stems from chemical exposure. it's not linked to a particular product or substance. most cases have been associated with e-cigarette products

it's saturday morning. you're taking a live look at the brand-new chase center. they took it out for a test run last night with metallica and the san francisco symphony. all reports are, things went smoothly both inside and out. video shows crews rescuing a hiker yesterday. he ended up lost overnight. all started thursday when the man took a hike alone. firefighters say he became disoriented, a friend called for help and the search began. people on the ground found the hiker near stinson beach. >> rerecommend you know where you're hiking before you head out because sometimes you're going to lose service. we recommend you have a gps on you. >> and they recommend always hiking with a friend. governor newsom and lawmakers are fine tuning a new bill limiting medical exceptions in california.

the bill cracks down on doctors who sell fraudulent medical exceptions. the governor wants to grandfather in all medical exceptions. let's take you live out to sfo where repair work is about to begin on one of the major runways. one of two runways mainly used for arriving flights will be closed for almost three weeks. travelers are warned to expect delays and cancellations, the airport says the delays will begin after 9:00 p.m. our investigate unit first reported that the runways were cracking and sinking in february. experts say unsettled ground and increased runway traffic are to blame. after a deadly ten-day journey, hurricane dorian is finally winding down. but it delivered a below to the carolina coastline. it knocked down trees, leaving hundreds of thousands without

power. on ocracoke island, 800 people were trapped when the storm surge rose seven feet in just two hours. >> did it scare you? >> yes. mostly scared for my daughter. >> the governor says there are no reports of serious injuries or deaths. obviously the worst of it was the bahamas, but still not done with the storm yet. they're getting it on the northeast coast right now. >> we're anticipating plenty of rain coming from this storm. the winds are always a concern for it and the recovery process is really what makes things tough. we're sending our best wishes out there. considering the fact that it was a scary situation, it will continue to be one of those efforts. bringing it back home in san francisco, 59 degrees. notice in the live camera, it's cloudy and we got a little bit of drizzle because of that building marine layer.

check out the flag right there, you can see it waving. the winds will kick up this afternoon especially long the coastline in the hill top area. check out that cloud cover over san jose. 62 degrees. what do we have lurking nearby that's keeping us cool, you can see on our satellite radar here, we got the cloud cover passing through and the most that we're going to see in term of affects from this -- i'm going to zoom this in a little bit closer, is going to be the winds. we're going to get a nice on shore flow. we got the cloud cover from it, but we're not expecting any rain from this system. it's passing by pretty far off north. it's a dry system. but we can thank the cooler temperatures for that. how gusty will it be tonight? 5:00, 6:00, 7:00, the winds will start picking off, but it's the wind gusts that we're going to be monitoring. there are no advisories in place, but check out the wind

a juror in the ghost ship trial is talking about how they reached their decision. >> he says the jury was very close to being hung on both defendants. the jury ended up acquitting defendant max harris but they couldn't come to a decision on derick almena. >> the longer i saw those two guys sitting there and i saw those parents sitting there, and i saw -- no one is going to win in this thing. >> in the end, two of the 12 jurors did not think almena was guilty of involuntary manslaughter but ten did. follow up now to the case of a young immigrant receiving life-saving care in the bay area. she was set to be deported, but now new hope. nurses and community leaders rallied outside of the children's hospital in oakland. they were demanding that undocumented patients given

critical care be allowed to stay, at least until they're healthy. the face of this movement is 24-year-old maria. she gets weekly life saving treatments at the hospital for her rare disease. nurses say her case is just one of thousands. >> we're really here to bring war awareness, get loud, and we need everybody to come and show up and support those who need a voice. >> last month, immigration reopened her case. she's not completely in the clear but she's no longer slated for deportation. felicity huffman could be facing jail time. he admits to paying someone to change her daughter's answers on the s.a.t. prosecutors want her to serve a month in jail and pay a $20,000 fine. huffman's attorneys are requesting no jail time, just

probation and community service. she'll learn her fate next week. >> the justice department has launched an investigation into four automakers that signed a deal with california on vehicle emissions standards. the deal between california and ford, honda, bmw and volkswagen was announced in july. they agreed to reduce emissions by 3.7% per year. the issue is the standards are more stringent than what president trump wants. they're reportedly cooperating with investigators. this month's jobs reports showed u.s. employers added 130,000 jobs in august. that's below expectations. but unemployment is holding steady, near the lowest level in five decades. the trump administration is touting the report as solid evidence the u.s. economy is strong. but with the global economy weakening and a trade war with china dragging on, critics see signs of trouble.

the antonio brown saga continues to get stranger and stranger. it may be over before it started. brown posted this to instagram about 90 minutes ago. he alludes that the raiders are holding him back and asks the raiders to release him. espn is reporting the raiders have voided nearly $30 million of brown's guaranteed money and are planning on paying him just

week to week. the report also says the star receiver wants to be traded. last night he posted a new video that's drawing a lot of attention. the video that appears to be a private conversation between brown and someone who sounds like the raiders' coach. he talks about his doubters and how he's working to get ready for the season. it's unclear when the conversation took place or if brown had permission to record it. tense game last night right here on nbc bay area. the giants taking on the dodgers. pregame, the dodgers honored giants manager who has a few weeks left before he retires. the game, giants have the bases load, when one is hit deep to center. giants go up 3-1. they hang on to win, 5-4.

it is 7:43. if you're just now waking up, get ready, you're going to be looking forward to a lovely and cool saturday ahead. 62 degrees right now in the south bay. 63 degrees for the peninsula, 61 for the tri-valley. we have that fog rolling through san francisco. see those little dots right there, those marks are a little bit of drizzle. 58 degrees, east bay, 62, north bay, 54 degrees. and we have a bit of a system passing nearby. if you're going to be heading outside, let me show you what we're going to be looking forward to. 9:00 a.m., 64 degrees, notice how we keep a lot of that cloud cover and then by about 11:00 a.m., we'll get a good mix of clouds and sun coming through. what exactly is keeping us so cool and what's going to kick up the winds tonight?

>> we have a passing dry cold front and that's not expected to bring any rain. but it will be keeping that cloud cover, kicking up those winds tonight. it's a sea breeze coming in from the ocean. here it is, hour by hour outlook. around 5:00, the winds will start picking up. by 7:00, 8:00, it will start to get gusty. we're going to be really windy and gusty tonight. if you have any patio furniture that might blow away, you might want to bring that inside. it starts to calm down overnight and we get a good recovery in resumedty for tonight. a lot cooler, san jose, 75. the biggest difference from yesterday to today is going to be the cool down and the winds. 77 degrees, morgan hill, in through the eastbou bay.

it's going to be gusty, 73 degrees. if you're going to be heading into san francisco, expect to see a lot of that cloud cover lingering all day long, but at least it will be cool. 79 degrees for santa rosa, 78 through novato. it's going to keep our cooler temperatures around through tomorrow. as we head into tuesday and wednesday, we get a slight heating up daytime highs but it isn't until wednesday and thursday when we get a ridge of high pressure that's going to warm us right back up. enjoy this sneak peek of sort of fallike temperatures because by monday and tuesday, the temperatures start to go up by 10, 12 degrees. average high is about 88 degrees. we're about 8 degrees below normal for this time of year thanks to that system. it gets hot again by wednesday and thursday. i can't wait to see what everybody decides to do with their cooler saturday. >> thank you very much. still ahead on "today in the

our investigative reporter has the exclusive story. >> reporter: today it's just an asphalt patch covering a trench, but five years, robert pena could easily have died here. he remembers one of his first jobs as a city maintenance worker. it was november 2014 and he was using a power saw to sever tough roots. >> i started cutting and the next thing i know, i seen a big orange flash and it exploded right in my face. >> reporter: the explosion threw pena five feet. he narrowly escaped the trench before a second explosion hit. that bundle of roots concealed a power line that was improperly installed across the sewer pipe. a crew was supposed to locate and mark the line so nobody would cut into by mistake. but they missed it.

the public utilities commissioned fined pg&e $450,000 for the errors. normally that would have been the end of it, but this year, a pg&e insider blue the whistle. >> and they turned over this report it commissioned on the san jose incident showing those 811 workers failed to follow companies rule. they didn't bring in a skilled electrician to help locate the buried line and falsified this document to indicate they had. >> it seems that pg&e can't determine whether a person is qualified or not qualified and they put lives at risk. >> he agrees with regulators who says pg&e impaired their probe leaving them unaware of larger safety concerns. >> they knew what the answer was, they didn't want to tell anybody about it. and that's criminal. that's wrong. it's unsafe and irresponsible. >> reporter: a former public utilities commissioner

regulators suggests having state regulators set up an office inside pg&e corporate headquarters to make it tougher for the company to keep secrets. >> if the utility cannot be trusted because it's not being forthright, then you have a serious problem. >> reporter: we reached out to the utility and they said that pg&e took and continues to take corrective actions to meet our regulatory requirement and is the moves include overhauling management, hiring more crews and upgrading training, audits and tracking of underground lines. pena has covered for the third degree burns to his face and arms, but he'll never forget what investigators told him, they said give your wife and kids a hug, because you got saved. you shouldn't be there with them right now. >> reporter: he wants to make sure it doesn't happen again. >> what if someone dies as a result of it? you're gambling with someone's life, someone's family,

children. >> jaxon van derbeken. eight state are launching an anti-trust investigation into the company. the investigation will focus on facebook's advertising data. facebook is already facing a separate ftc investigation over anti-trust concerns. this comes as more than 30 states' attorneys general are expected to launch a separate probe into google. santa clara county is suing one of its local companies, intuit. it's made an agreement with the irs to allow low income taxpayers to final income taxes for free. all customers would have to pay

welcome back this morning. it's time for our clear the shelters segment with our friends from pets in need. we have faith today. introduce us to faith. >> faith is about a four-month old kitten. she had a detached retina, so she is blind in her right eye. not sure how well she can see with her left eye. there are some issues going on. but with our second chance fund, we're able to give her all of the medical she needs. and it's a fund for our animals that need a little bit more medical treatment than what we can give at our shelter.

we take them to specialists and source it out so people can donate to that. >> faith has some challenges. >> a little bit. >> some medical challenges. she's a black cat as well. and that is -- is that a challenge for adoption or -- i know you're running a special right now because you have a lot of them. >> not so much a challenge, but for some reason, this season, we have gotten a lot of black cats. so we've got a special going on that it's $100 off our adoption fee for any and all black cats. >> okay. >> kittens included. >> when somebody comes into the shelter and they're looking for a kitten, how do you talk to them about what that has some medical needs as opposed to one that might not? >> well, we completely disclose it and with her it's obvious. if you look at her eyes, you can tell that she's missing one eye and the other one is a little bit cloudy. but we let them know and if they

need the medical attention, we give it to them. >> do you like people who have experienced adoption before, go with one that may have special medical challenges or she's good for anybody -- >> i think she's good for anybody. we do let them know that the other eye may need some medical attention. we don't know how well she sees right now. i think she can see. she seems to find my fingers and bites them. but she can go into any home. she's really a friendly cat and purrs a lot and -- >> and a great time you said right now with the special. black cats in particular, but all types of cats if you want to welcome one into your house. >> absolutely. kitten season is almost over, but we still have a lot of them. >> good luck, faith. i hope everything turns out for you. >> she's a great cat. >> thanks, again, martha. >> if you want to learn more about pets in need, head to
