good wednesday morning, september 11th. taking a live look at ground zero in new york city. this is where it all happened 18 years ago, the twin towers fell as two planes hit the building, crashing into them during a terror attack. today many people will remember those lives lost, nearly 3,000. we will continue to remember those this morning throughout "today in the bay." we want to thank you for joining us this morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. let's get a look at that forecast for today, another nice one? >> it will be a little bit warmer, but still nice. i think we can handle this. here is a live look outside in san jose as we start out with some clear skies in campbell.

here is a look at how your morning shapes up. we'll be in the mid-50s as you head out the door. nice cool start to the day and our temperatures warm up into the low 70s by noon, eventually reaching into the upper 80s for parts of the south bay for this afternoon. so we'll talk more about this and what's ahead with some higher heat. mike, you're seeing a great looking report from the chp. >> it's not often i get to say that, very early in the morning. there are 20 incidents reported but they're all construction related, that's the only thing on the chp blotter right now. that's a great flow of traffic. green sensors from the south bay and south county through contra costa county, no major problems. construction crews like over vasco there's repair work at camino diablo, there may be traffic control getting out of brentwood. the bay bridge toll plaza shows you a few cars on either side of the fastrak lanes. the cash lanes are looking light. a smooth flow of traffic, another live look through

oakland, traffic flows nicely past the coliseum. the northbound side lighter. the southbound side should see crews around 23rd and 29th. you see a nice glow of lights but a little mist in the air, not a problem. kari is talking about a better detailed look at the forecast and not going to talk about what i thought i saw in that shot. san jose a smooth flow of traffic as well. everything is looking clear in the south bay. again we talked about coming up from the south county, where there are no delays, hollister, gilroy and out of morgan hill and a drive across 101, this is 92. look how light that is. this will of course continue to build. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. today certainly is a day americans will never forget, it's hard to believe that it's been 18 years since the september 11th terrorist attacks changed this nation forever. a live look at new york city. people from coast to coast will pause for solemn ceremonies to remember those killed. this is a live look at ground zero. family and friends will actually

as they do every year read the names of of 3,0009/11 victims and there will be six moments of silence. in shanksville, pennsylvania, vice president mike pence expected to speak as well. flight 93 was on its way to sfo after taking off from newark airport. president trump will be going to the pentagon to mark the anniversary, a memorial ceremony is being held there as those lives are remembered, more dying from diseases they got while trying to help the victims. 22 new names have been added to the new york city fire department's 9/11 memorial, all are victims who succumbed in the past year to diseases they got after being exposed to toxic chemicals in the world trade center rubble. the president of the uniform firefighters association says others are still fighting for their lives. >> we have three right now that are in hospice. we have numerous others that are in critical condition.

>> manhattan's 9/11 memorial also dedicated a new section to those who died from 9/11 related diseases. it outlines the amp that first responders walked for months into the smoldering rubble of ground zero. it's a somber morning. stay with "today in the bay" as our live coverage of today's event continues this hour and next. a decision from fremont leaders on where to put a new homeless navigation center is leaving some people outraged. >> councilmembers made that decision late last night after narrowing it down to two possible locations. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in fremont with the decision and reaction. bob? >> reporter: marcus and laura, the city of fremont could have built the housing navigation center for the homeless on a vacant lot on dacoto road but they voted unanimously to build

it behind city hall. as you can hear and see, hundreds of people voiced their opinions at last night's city council meeting both for and against this project. this is an issue residents here have been fighting for over months. the housing navigation center will be 45-bed facility supposed to provide homeless people a place to live and help them transition to jobs and permanent housing. some felt dactot lacked transportation options and too close to schools. others feel the city hall location will make the downtown too crowded and the third group of people who don't want the navigation center in fremont at all. >> today the whole meeting, you know, i heard the buzzword, experiment. how can you do this, waste all this taxpayer's money for an experiment? not acceptable. >> we already have unhoused people on our streets, and

that's something we have to deal with. we can't just imagine that they're not there and assume they go away. >> reporter: kimberly peterson is the fremont police chief pointed out at the meeting homeless people are already in fremont, regardless of where the navigation center will be. she says we're not wringing them here, they're already here. the cost to build and operate the center is $7.7 million. it's expected to be up and running by june of next year. reporting live here in fremont, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. it's 4:36 right now. police are hoping you can help identify a man they're calling a person of interest in the case of a mother of five who was shot and killed last week. they want to talk to the man that you see in this surveillance image and they're hoping you may recognize his car. 44-year-old martha casiano died in oakland after being struck by a stray bullet september 1th, it happened as she left a wedding reception on east 22nd street.

there was an argument happening nearby and someone fired a gun. if you know the man in this photo, contact oakland police. students in pittsburg returned to class today, one day after the campus reportedly went on lockdown. the east bay times reporting a violent confrontation near the elementary school prompted the lockdown. officers arrived to find one person with a gun wound to his arm. they say the shooter left the scene and ran towards the school. parents were only allowed to pick up students after the lockdown was lifted. "the times" does not indicate if anyone was arrested. a 12-year-old boy remains in critical condition after being struck by a suspected drunk driver in san francisco, it happened a little before 5:00 in the tenderloin. the 29-year-old driver is in custody. our crews saw police giving him a field sobriety test. police say the suspect has previous convictions for drunk

headquarters and here are today's top business head lines. wall street is set to open slightly higher this morning. stocks were mostly positive yesterday. the dow notching its fifth straight gain, the longest win streak in three months, backed by gains in energy stocks. on today's watch list a report on producer price inflation. the ceos of more than 50 companies including amazon, ibm and at&t sent a letter to congress urging them to create comprehensive consumer data privacy rules. they say a federal law is needed to ensure strong and consistent protections for consumers and also to maintain american competitiveness. the letter comes as lawmakers have been scrutinizing big tech companies over data practices but notably absent was tim cook who has been a supporter of data privacy measures. taco bell is making its vegetarian offerings a permanent section of the menu starting tomorrow. the meat free items are certified by the american vegetarian association and include a black bean crunch wrap

good wednesday morning to you. a live look at the bay bridge, nicely illuminated, waiting for the sun's arrival. we'll check the commute in just moments. it's 4:46. in you plan to drive anywhere near san francisco's waterfront tonight, be prepared. this is the second straight night the mission bay area will be tested at twin events at the chase center and oracle park. giants game starts at 6:45, and tonight eric clapton takes the stage at chase center at 7:30. last night's test city leaders tried to get the word out to drivers because there's so little parking but not everyone listened. >> driving around for about a solid hour and we couldn't find parking. we had to park two miles away and take an uber here. >> some say the gridlock could

have been worse because giants drew a sparse crowd and the start times were more than an hour apart. the giants game ended long before the concert did so maybe that helped on the exiting process there. >> they're really packing those events there. >> they've got a pretty good line-up. it's been impressive, a brand new venue, too, people want to check it out. >> someone's also got to pay for the venue. >> yeah, got to pay for everything these days. >> but you don't have to pay for the forecast. kari? >> looks pretty good for today. >> cooling down? >> it's going to be heating up as we go into the rest of the week. let's take a live look outside in san francisco. it's all clear this morning. no fog right now, and i think that's going to be the case over the next couple of days, as we get ready for some hotter temperatures. take a look at that seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. it's already showing that high heat that's headed our way. for that morning commute, brentwood looks pretty good, at least it stays cool through about 7:00. we'll be at 58 degrees as the

sun continues to rise and after that, we're heading strght up with some mid-70s by 11:00 this morning. here is a look at our high temperatures for the south bay. it's going to reach up to 87 in gilroy, with cupertino up to 83 degrees. we have highs in the east bay today back in the low 90s. pittsburg up to 92 degrees, and for half moon bay we're at 65. redwood city 82. san francisco starting to reach into the low 70s today, especially in the mission district and the embarcadero, and in sonoma today expect a high of 86. we're up to 89 today in ukiah. so our temperatures starting to warm up, even though there is a storm system that's just to the north of the bay area, and that will stay there, as that high pressure builds and keeps the cooler air farther north, so we are going to see some major warming ahead. we're looking at this high pressure keeping our winds very light, and it also causes the temperatures to go up as that

air sinks so it's kind of pushing down a high amount of pressure on to the surface, and as that air comes down, it will warm up. so here is a look at what we are talking about here. our inland valleys go from 90 today to 98 in the hottest spots tomorrow, and then up to 101 degrees for some of our peak temperatures. for the weekend we're starting to come back down but saturday is hot, 96 degrees and look at next week, we'll be back in the upper 70s for highs after seeing that roller coaster taking us up pretty high. mike is on the weiness in lap. a live look at university and whipple, one of the typical traffic breaks whipple north and south 101 are restricted by a couple of lanes because of construction work overnight and farther north the only incident besides construction is ralston reports of a garbage bag having

broken on the freeway so there's some debris in the middle of the freeway there, be careful. smooth flow and a little bit of slowing on the live camera with the of lights around whipple. everything else moves very nicely out of the altamont, mild slowing and past grant line road. once you pass that, everything's just fine. highway 4 no slowing out of antioch, pittsburg, bay point. vasco moves nicely toward 580 this morning. walnut creek interchange a smooth drive, at speed down to the bay bridge toll plaza. look, there's only cash backup about half way to the back of the parking lot, referring to this parking lot here at the toll plaza. from oakland side in to san francisco, that span moves very smoothly. under the water the b.a.r.t. tube moves nicely, the longer ride the capitol corridor, the ace train and caltrain moving nicely and looking at a smooth flow of traffic across that san mateo bridge, beautiful view. back to you. >> looks good, thank you, mike. 4:50. former oakland raider turned

patriot antonio brown is responding to sexual assault and rape accusations made by his one-time personal trainer. >> britney taylor is accusing brown of sexually assaulting her twice and raping her last year when he was with the pittsburgh steelers. brown was never charged. it is still unclear if police ever investigated the accusations but brown's attorneys released this statement. it says in part "mr. brown denies each and every allegation in the lawsuit. he will pursue all legal remedies to not only clear his name, but to also protect other professional athletes against false accusations." taylor also released a statement, it says in part "as a rape victim of antonio brown, deciding to speak out has been an incredibly difficult decision. speaking out removes the shame that i have felt for the past year and places it on the person responsible for my rape." now brown and his attorney both call it a consensual

state for dropping the ball failing to fund the rape crisis centers. yesterday they agreed to spend $600,000 to make sure the resource remains available for victims and there will be expanded hours at crisis community centers inan jose and gilroy. >> the sexual assault is so prevalent for both women, children, both male and female, and some men. it's such a significant problem that at the very least we have to step up and address it. >> rape crisis centers help victims from the moment they report their attack all the way through their court hearings. >> 4:57. a live look at sfo this morning, where there's bound to be more frustration for travelers. we just got off the phone with the airport and it says that 61 flights have already been canceled so far today, due to the ongoing runway repair project. sfo says that those cancellations were already planned. the work is supposed to be funnished on september 26th.
