"today in the bay's" bob redell just arrived on the scene in mountain view. i understand you spoke to chp, bob. >> laura and scott, all northbound lanes of highway 85 are shut down here at central, so we're going to have you getting off at evelyn while they try to clear the scene here. the two vehicles, the vehicle in the back that's burned, that's the suv, that was the wrong-way driver and as you can see right now the fire department's trying to remove the body of that person. unfortunately another driver in this sedan right here that was a man also killed during this head-onlirivi

was drunk or something else was going on. there are two other people who witnessed this wrong-way driver as they were headed north watching this driver head south, but their phone calls to 911 didn't come in until unfortunately after this fatal head-on collision behind me. you can hear the sound as the fire department is using a saw to try to cut through the metal of that suv, trying to remove that one body of the person who was the wrong-way driver while the other one has been removed. the estimated time of reopening is 6:00, though the sergeant told me that was, he was trying to be conservative, maybe they'd have this open a little bit sooner, so again, northbound 85 you're told to get off at evelyn in mountain view until the scene is cleared. reporting live in mountain view. >> he was live in mountain view. you just saw the horrific mass of metal there, must have been a

been monitoring this as well with the maps. this is going to be a huge problem. it's a tragedy and a huge problem. >> tragedy, we follow back to the practical traffic aspect. these photos off instagram by fire associates santa clara valley. they provide help, relief for the folks out to major incidents like this, they sent this so we can use it, all of the crews on scene, you saw the activity with bob and the horrible scene behind him with the two cars hit head-on northbound 85 shut down. we'll give you a locator, at the border of sunnyvale and mountain view. folks already grumbling about it either way. north 85 is shut down right there just before you get to highway 101 so coming out of cupertino for example, north 85 is closed atelyn. if you get off evelyn, take central expressway to shoreline, city streets, minbound 101. right now everything should move smoothly, use caution.

there are signals, surface streets getting you past shoreline, the am tee theater and google, linkedin, taking you back to highway 101. the rest of the freeway is moving smoothly. we'll track the expressway with bob. the commute moves smoothly. kari, we have a heatup going on today. >> that's the other big storier for us, we are under a heat advisory that starts at 11:00, for all the areas shaded in orange which also includes san francisco. we'll see some coastal areas warming up. a live look in san jose as you get ready to head out n carp bell the mid-60s to the mid 80s by noon. we'll continue to track the temperatures. another update coming in a few minutes. people living south of salinas may have felt the shaking after two small quakes a few hours apart. the most recent a 3.8 around midnight. a few hours about that 3.4.

homeowner was upstairs in the shower. the kicking door didn't realize anybody was there. the homeowner started screaming and he took wrapped myself in a towel, again, just yelling as loud as i could, because i didn't know what was going on. >> quite frightening. the thief ran into a nearby car, drove away from the scene. police are now working a few leads. amtrak services back to normal this morning after a train struck and killed two men last night on the tracks in berkeley, about 8:00 p.m. near second street and university avenue. we don't know why they were on the tracks or why neither were able to escape an oncoming train. union pacific says normal train service resumed before 1:00 a.m. if you have friends checking out the bay area site, brace them. san francisco cable cars will be out of service. crews will be doing repair work on the 20 ton gear boxes, who move the cable cars along san

breaking news on this thursday morning, if you are just waking up, there has been a horrific crash on northbound 85 in mountain view. >> that's right, for this friday morning, it's very bad. >> friday, yes. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us this morning. he arrived on the scene and he spoke to chp. >> reporter: i this of course involved a wrong-way driver as we've been talking about all morning long and the chp sergeant they haven't been able to determine this yet but

are telling us, this is not a surprise to anyone, usually wrong-way drivers are drivers under the influence, trying to get the message out if you are going to be drinking, please designate a driver or take an uber or taxi cab. what happened is you have that suv that's in the background, that was the wrong-way driver. they collided with the honda civic that's in the foreground and when that happened, when that collision happened, the suv caught fire. the wrong-way driver is dead and they're trying to retrieve his or her body, it's not clear what geriver of thisg this collision. we got some information on that driver, 35-year-old man from amer don't have their identity. this accident happened a little bit before 1:00 this morning. there were a couple of calls to 911 just after the accident, they had seen the wrong-way driver. unfortunately the calls came in after the accident were not as much use as far as preventing

welcome back, everyone. we continue to monitor breaking news that is happening northbound 85 this morning. there's been a really bad head-on collision there. we want to check in with mike inouye because he's monitoring now the work-arounds. two people died in this. >> you can see from the scene, guys, this is on northbound 85, this video taken is showing you the damage, two vehicles head-on crash, one was going the wrong way on the highway. another, folks were able to see it, a few called it in but wasn't notified to chp in time to stop this from happening, the fiery crash there, shutting in down as you said, laura, northbound 85, as you're exiting sunnyvale and into mountain view on the northbound side. let's take you to the maps. here is silicon valley. san jose is over here.

too early for traffic to be an issue as far as the volume but over here the circle coming up in cupertino, sunnyvale and at the border you're forced off the freeway at evelyn because of that scene you just saw. evelyn will take you to central expressway over there via castro, over near downtown moun day view, not too far away. taking central expressway continuing toward shoreline taking you past google, linkedin and amphitheter, take you to highway 85. central expressway to shoreline boulevard back on to north 101, there's moffitt as a locator for folks issue is getting through the scene live from that location. wreckage. bob continues to follow that the rest of the bay has a light flow of traffic, a minor crash on the shoulder west 580 coming in touend a smooth drive forost. we have a disabled vehicle major problems. reported around powell, we have more detail from the chp, but nothing as significant as that

full closure and the deadly crash on north 85. now what's going on over here at the bay bridge toll plaza, we also have the backup. the cash lanes typical over there, so both sides with some slowing, we don't have anything major. it's friday, we expect the lighter volume, the closure of north 85 is causing quite an issue, hopefully clearing, kari, before 6:00 a.m. >> as we get ready to head out the door a live look in san francisco. we see all clear skies and we have another spare the air alert day as we are going to see some of the smoke drifting in from the north bay and also for the inland east bay and into the south bay. and then here is a live look outside in san jose, we're headed over to campbell to check out our temperature trend, we'll be in the mid-60s to start and going into the mid 80s. now our normal high temperature is about 81 degrees and we'll be above that before we get to lunch. as we go through our afternoon high temperatures we're reaching over 100 degrees for the south county, morgan hill up to 101

degrees. milpitas 98 and for the east bay, a lot of triple digits here reaching 102 in antioch, 101 in walnut creek. oakland today reaching 91 degrees. half moon bay 77, and 92 in san mateo. notice in san francisco we'll have some upper 80s, wouldn't be surprised to see a few low 90s. be aware it is going to be very hot especially if you don't have air conditioning today and then reaching 99 degrees in novato as well as napa. as we go into the next several days, big changes ahead. we have several storm systems moving into the pacific northwest, and we are seeing some high pressure starting to move in, but then by the end of the weekend, that high pressure moves out of here, and there will be an approaching storm system that looks to give the bay area a slight chance of rain on monday morning, starting out in the north bay, and then continuing to kind of fizzle out as it makes its way across the rest of the bay area, but once again, a chance of showers in

the forecast on monday, especially for the north bay. so we're going from some dangerous heat to temperatures starting to back off on sunday, and then more clouds and a slight chance of showers on monday, highs in the mid-70s and we're going right back up by the end of next week, while san francisco has some high temperatures today, feeling much nicer going into the weekend. i'll continue to track that and the high heat coming up in the forecast, in a few more minutes. >> all right, we'll check back with you. thanks so much, kari. 4:50. one man's recovering from burns after a chaotic confrontation outside of a liquor store, happened on meadow lane in concord. the man was of fight with several accidentally himself. police believe he may have somehow unintentionally set himself on fire. we spoke with a neighbor who do. >> he was basically clotheless,

his clothes were on fire, burnt. >> the man suffered severe burns. police say are not life-threatening. right now they're not saying anything about arrests but the investigation continues. 4:51 on your friday morning, elevated e. coli levels found in part of the american river, popular among swimmers. the "sacramento bee" found the highest levels along the lower stretch of the river and in the city near where it meets the sacramento river. that area has a high homeless population. human waste is thought to be the big contributor.
