breaking news this hour out of the south bay, two people are dead after a horrific wrong-way crash on 85 >> "today in the bay's" bob redell just arrived on the scene, mountain view, he's been there about half an hour there, shortly after it happened. anything new, bob? >> reporter: well they're almost about to remove the other body. we're trying to have the road here northbound highway 85 at evelyn reopened by 6:00 but it could be sooner. two people are dead unfortunately as a result of a wrong-way driver, the wrong-way driver a white car, suv, used to be a redford suv colliding with this black honda civic, this
5:01 am
happened around 1:00 this morning. the driver of the redford suv was heading south on northbound 85 when they collided head-on with the honda civic at central expressway overpass. both drivers were killed, as i mentioned. we know the driver of the honda civic was a 35-year-old man from american canyon. the suv caught fire on impact. the body of the wrong-way driver is so badly disfigured, chp and fire they can't tell if that person was a man or a woman. what do you suspect was going on with the wrong-way driver? >> it's hard to say. wrong-way drivers are typically caused by impairment. it can sometimes be confusion, but based on the time of day, it could have been anything right now. we don't have anything firmly indicating that, but in general, wrong-way drivers do tend to be impaired drivers or those who are kind of confused. >> reporter: chp says at least two other drivers avoided
5:02 am
hitting that wrong-way driver but their calls to 911 did not arrive until after this accident so again, all northbound lanes of highway 85 shut down here at evelyn. so you'll be told to get off at evelyn. fortunately it's early in the morning commute and looking off camera here, doesn't look like there's much of a backup if any. the chp is trying to have all lanes reopened by 6:00 but it could happen sooner. reporting live here in mountain view, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest there, bob. let's check in with mike, watching the maps and how this is going to affect your commute. >> biggest concern, two people dead after that crash and somebody driving the wrong way on the freeway, that tragedy going on and the reason why 85 is closed. the very practical concern though is how are you going to get through the area. silicon valley moves smoothly with the light, light traffic flow, starting to see more cars on the roadway and traveling north cupertino, sunnyvale and in to mountain view, we have the closure at evelyn. folks may know as the sunnyvale
