develop. the tension i felt in the room, honestly, savannah, was the five lowest candidates trying to swing for the fences to get into that five circle that will probably be competitive going forward. >> did any of them do it, the lower tiered candidates, did they have a moment that would catapult them higher >> i don't think so, frankly, the best debate of the night, in terms of who was helped the most, probably barack obama, barack obama had a very good night. everyone was hugging barack obama particularly joe biden. >> well, of course, and biden has always hugged barack obama but i remember you and i talking after the last debate and you were kind of perplexed that the democratic candidates had taken turn savaging the obama legacy saying it wasn't progressive enough seems like they got the memo and put their arms around president obama. >> kamala harris particularly decided to make trump the focus of her debate last night, and i thought it was pretty effective. >> that seems clearly to be harris' strategy over and over

again, when given the opportunity to bait this or that, she'd say let's focus on what matters, beating trump. do you think that's the way for her to rise up in the polls? >> i think it definitely distinguished her last night i think she was the one that kept reminding everyone, hey, this is the real problem over here i also thought the debate was pretty good last night for the first time of crystallizing the health care debate i thought joe biden did a pretty good job of saying, hey, and he was joined by mayor pete, and amy, you know, do we really want to give up our choice. do we really want not to be able to have insurance at work. >> do you think some of these candidates were moving more to the center than they had seemed previously willing to do >> it depends. obviously beto o'rourke talked about confiscating guns. that, you know, while we all want gun safety, except mitch mcconnell and the nra and the president, i think talking about confiscating guns is taking it to a place that no candidate for

president has ever done. >> senator mccaskill, always good to catch up with you after these nights thank you so much. another major story this morning, a tropical system it's expected to pose a threat to the bahamas, to florida, and other parts of the southeast still reeling from hurricane dorian dylan is in for al tracking it all. good morning. >> good morning, yes, this is the last thing the northern bahamas needs but we are keeping an eye on this potential tropical cyclone winds at just 30 miles per hour, but it is expected to strengthen as it takes this move to the north and west you can see there's a possibility as it moves through the northern bahamas, it could be a tropical storm. i want to point out with winds up to 40, 45 miles per hour at that point, you won't have all of that water being pushed on shore. we're not going to have that huge storm surge we saw with dorian, but we still could see several inches of rain we need to keep a close eye once again on the east coast of florida, still most of the storm is just offshore and the trends

could keep it to the east. this could produce rain, rip currents and minor beach erosion with some possibly some of that flooding as some of that water moves on to the beaches. the heaviest rain with this storm is sitting on the eastern side of it that keeps most of the rain out over the water we still could see about 2 to 4 inches of rain across the northern bahamas with isolated amounts of about 5 to 6 inches, lesser amounts along the east coast of florida but this is something we have to keep a close eye on through the weekend. guys >> dylan, thank you. we'll see you in a minute. craig has an update on the terrible dive boat fire off the california coast >> there are new developments on the investigation this morning the preliminary report from the ntsb shows that all six crew members were asleep at the time. even though the boat was required by federal law to have a night watchman joe fryer is following the story for us good morning to you. >> good morning, everyone. the 75 foot conception was on a three-day diving trip when it caught fire while anchored early in the morning on september 2nd. the charred remains of the boat were lifted out of the water

yesterday, nearly two weeks after that deadly fire as the ntsb investigates what happened and how the tragedy could have been prevented this morning, new details about the scuba boat fire that killed 34 people earlier last week off the coast of santa cruz island in california. the national transportation safety board confirming all six crew members on board the conception were asleep according to the report, a crew member required by law to stay awake and walk the decks overnight was sleeping when the fire broke out at 3:14 a.m an attorney for the boat's owner truth aquatics says in a statement that a crewman checked on and around the galley area around 2:30 a.m. the 75 foot boat had three levels, the night of september 2nd, five crew members were asleep on the top deck when the fire broke out on the second deck where the 33 passengers and one crew member were asleep. the sleeping quarters had an entrance and a safety hatch. that safety hatch leaving many questioning whether it was big enough to help passengers escape

and if they knew it was even there. also this morning, new concerns about lithium ion batteries in devices on the vessel. some on board may have been charging their electronics the coast guard issuing additional safety regulations in the wake of the tragedy such as limiting the unsupervised charging of lithium ion batteries and the use of powerid this strips and extension cords in a statement, the company says it passed every annual safety inspection and this tragedy was not caused by the operator, the boat or the crew. >> that the conception has been raised to the surface and it is being prepared to lift it on to a barge. it will then be transported to an undisclosed secure location. >> the exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined investigators are now asking witnesses to come forward and

urging previous passengers of truth aquatics trips to share their experiences. >> joe, thank you. in the meantime, the fda is expected to take a major step forward today in approving a pill that aims to protect children against severe peanut allergies. as we reported last month it would become the first therapy of its kind. and nbc's kathy park is on the story. good morning. >> good morning, this drug is intended to protect 1 million u.s. children and teens who are allergic to peanuts. after a year of treatment, nearly 70% of participants were able to tolerate a small amount of peanuts and now it's up to federal regulators to determine the drug's safety. this morning, a promising new peanut allergy drug for children could be getting closer to fda approval when a panel of health experts assigned to safety and effectiveness of ar 101. this first of its kind pill aimed at 4 to 17-year-olds contains a measured dose of peanut flour with the goal of building a tolerance for peanuts

a very good morning to you. it is 7:26, i'm laura garcia. the chp investigating a fiery wrong-way crash that killed two drivers this morning in mountain view. firefighters posted that image from the time they arrived on scene, it happened about 1:00 in the morning northbound 85 near central expressway. investigators say a woman driving the wrong way in an suv crashed into a honda civic. we now know the honda driver was a 35-year-old man from american canyon. neither name has been released and there were no passengers in either car. all northbound lanes were closed for about five hours. they're open now as are the weather gods telling us goodness

she lose her freedom today if federal prosecutors get their way, actress felicity huffman could be sentenced to one month behind bars for her role in the college admissions scandal. but after pleading guilty to paying $15,000 to rig her daughter's s.a.t. scores, this week the probation department overseeing her case disagreed with prosecutors, telling the judge, there was no actual or intended loss from huffman's crime, perhaps setting the stage for no prison time with huffman asking for leniency, requesting probation, community service and a fine, she wrote the judge, i keep asking myself why did i do this, how could i abandon my own moral compass and common sense her husband, actor william h. macy who was not charged may also be in court today after telling the judge it's a pain i don't think she will ever

escape it's not clear when or how felicity will resume her acting career as huffman becomes the first parent to be sentenced, we are now learning of a confidential internal investigation at ucla five years ago coaches there were questioned about parent donations from recruits who were not standout athletes a striking and troubling similarity in the alleged pay-to play scheme that led to 51 arrests this year. ucla says after the investigation, it implemented a policy that a donation could not be accepted from families of prospects until the student athlete is enrolled. with some parents like lori loughlin pleading not guilty and moving closer to trial, this morning from one actress, a real life hollywood cliffhanger is about to come to its dramatic end. >> miguel, clearly there are a lot of other defendants watching very closely today and perhaps thinking this might signal something for their cases.

vaping is odorless this morning we're showing you how a high-tech school is helping schools take on this teen epidemic. on campuses across the country, students vaping in school, escaping detection in bathrooms and locker rooms recent numbers from the cdc show a startling rise in teen and tween users. e-cigarette use in middle school students spiked 48%. in high schoolers up 78%, with one in four admitting they vape. 3.6 million teens reporting they use e-cigarettes nicotine use under 25 can harm the parts of the brain that control attention, learning, mood, memory, and impulse control. and now the mysterious lung illness linked to vaping hundreds of possible cases and six confirmed deaths >> there's a learning environment, they come to school

miles per hour we have to watch this track because once again it's another storm approaching the coast of florida and then taking that turn and affecting the southeastern coast of the united states now, the trend has been for this to shift farther to the east, and most of the heavy rain is on the eastern side of the storm. that should help with flooding concerns along the coast, but still there is so much uncertainty right now as we track this storm, so it is worth watching as we go through the weekend. heavy bands of rain will be a threat through the bahamas as we go into tonight, and tomorrow, we could see as much as 5 to 6 inches of rain in some areas elsewhere, we have another area of severe weather today expected through michigan into ohio and some heavier rain down across good morning, i'm kari hall, our weather continues because of a high heat advisory for san francisco. we're going to see temperatures heating up fairly quickly
