right now. >> good morning to you. thank you for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm mike washington. we want to talk to meteorologist kari hall. you've been talking about the fire danger today. >> that a long with the high heat is the main story today. let's get a live look outside in walnut creek. we have mostly clear skies. temperatures in the low 60s and in the south bay we're heading to the upper 90s today. gil roy reaches 99 degrees. we'll see highs of 100 degrees, up to 101 in danville and reaching 95 in palo alto and san francisco in the 90 as well.

i'll have more on this and the fire danger coming up. mike, do you have any update on the wrong way driver? >> no news on that. a wrong way driver reported southbound on the north side of 17. from hamilton they may be heading down across the santa cruz mountains. usually with those situations no news is good news. that driver usually gets off the freeway without injury or incident. we're looking at the rest of the bay and tracking a smooth flow of traffic. we have a new crash, west 580 and a little slowing at vasco. back to you. 5:01 now. searing heat and high winds fueling possible fires in the bay area. the red flag warning remains in effect. >> there are shut offs expected to help prevent any fires from sparking power lines.

we have a reporter live for us is santa rosa. what's today's plan? >> reporter: we're in a stand by mode for north bay. that means about 55,000 pg&e customers waiting to find out if their power will be shut off as part of the public safety power shut offs as pg&e monitors its equipment and monitors the situation here, the low humidity and high winds. this community in santa rosa knows what this is like. a day like today started out calm. you can see it's calm now. two years ago it was calm in the morning when the tubs fire blew up and the winds whipped that fire into one of the most deadly and destructive fires in history. red flag warnings remain in effect until tomorrow morning at 11:00 across most of the east bay and north bay.

we're not out of the woods yet. extreme dry mountain gusts, 20 to 40 miles an hour and sustained winds 10 to 20 miles an hour. humidity still low. the conditions are still very dangerous. emergency responders, area hospitals and others have trained for days like this a few times since the north bay fires two years ago. people are preparing at home as well making sure they have plen plenty of food, batteries and phones are charged just in case pg&e is forced to enforce a public safety power outage. the fire departments say it's all hands on deck. >> if a fire starts, we send additional resources coupled with our alarm response to a fire to try to keep it small. >> reporter: santa rosa officials telling "today in the

bay" as far as hospitals and other essential services around the community, all of them now have power generators except for one fire station. they feel like they're really prepared. we're live in santa rosa. >> thank you. let's bring in kari hall. the ingredients will be there. >> yeah, unfortunately today it's going to be really hot. let's get another look at the red flag warning in the areas included. this continues until tomorrow morning. we look at humidity along with the winds. the humidity will be dropping today. this shows hour by hour into this afternoon. we see some of those areas seeing relative humidity levels in the teens. that's why they're watching those areas for the potential of shutting off power because it's going to be so dry and the winds picking up sustained at about 10 to 20 miles an hour. i'll have more on that.

we'll talk about the temperatures we're expecting. >> i know you'll continue to monitor the red flag warnings on social media. you can also sign up for the breaking weather alerts and keep up to date. right now in the south bay firefighters are working to completely extinguish is reservoir fire burning in the hills. this road remains closed. that fire has burned about 130 acres and is about 95% contained. the fire was part of six smaller ones that started saturday. the cause is still under investigation. >> happening today president trump is set to speak at the united nations. however his phone call with ukraine's president is still getting a lot of attention. there are new questions over whether mr. trump tried to withhold aid. >> reporter: president trump is expected to talk about china and iran at the united nations today. >> we have a lot of pressure on

kavanaugh, she may have alluded to it. >> people can be warm and kind and caring and all the good things you want a person to be even if they don't agree with you. >> reporter: justice kagan said she realized the country today is polarized. another bay area still is trying to figure out what to do with people living in rvs on city streets. tonight the city council is considering a ban in some places and sanctioned parking in others. kris sanchez live for us in mountain view with the struggle. >> reporter: hi, marcus. it is a very difficult balance for the city of mountain view, but also for many cities around the bay area between home owners who say the rvs clog up residential streets and the folks who live in those rvs who say they don't have anywhere else to go. according to the data there are

nearly 400 rvs in mountain view that show signs of folks living in them. the fire department and public service department responded to more than 50 instances of rvs leaking or dumping sewage on streets. today the city of mountain view council will consider banning rv-sized vehicles on city streets less than 40 feet wide and also on streets with boik la bike lanes. >> we want to make it as easy as possible for anyone who owns a surface lot to be able to operate a safe parking program. >> reporter: now the last meeting on this issue was this summer and at that point there were seven hours of presentations and public comments. a lot of folks have something to say on this issue. tonight's meeting starts at

"the wall street journal" reporting the focus of the investigation which is in its early stages is still unclear. juul is facing a crack down by state and federal authorities as en vaping surges.

agencies outside union city. most police department computers are down. opponents of san francisco's homeless navigation center are vowing to fight on. the judge yesterday allowed construction to continue denying the request for an injunction. this is the second time the judge has ruled in favor of the mayor's office. opponents argued it will attract crime and drug use. they now will decide whether or not to file the appeal. a major development in the brexit drama playing out in the united kingdom. it has been ruled the recent shut down of parliament illegal. it was supposed to last until just before next month's brexit deadline. the house of commons speaker has called for business to resume

tomorrow. 5:24 the boeing 747 max still grounded. the families of the victims are eligible for money from a fund set up by boeing. they can now claim more than $100,000 each. boeing says those who submit claims can continue to pursue additional litigation. this comes as the new watchdog report claims that faa regulators mislead congress on the 747 max inspectors. it found they were not properly qualified to certify pilots. yosemite national park says they want to give it a face lift. the park wide clean up event is getting under way tonight. volunteers plan to spend the next few days picking up trash. the event lasts until monday.

started. a day like today started out very calm, but then got extremely windy. the dry conditions and the heat that kari was just talking about, that's a bad combination. those red flag warnings we were talking about yesterday remain in effect today across large parts of the east bay and the north bay remaining in effect until tomorrow morning at 11:00. expect on and off dry north east mountain wind gusts 20 to 40 miles an hour. sustained winds 10 to 20 miles an hour. humidity still low at 10% to 25%. the conditions are very dangerous. emergency responders, area hospitals and others have actually trained for days like this a few times since the north bay fires two years ago. santa rosa fire officials say it's all hands on deck during these periods and they have trucks and other resources ready to go. people are also preparing at home making sure they have

plenty of food, batteries and have their phones fully charged just in case pg&e is forced to enforce public safety power shut offs. some still concerned what it might mean for them financially. >> i lose my customers, me meat. i lose a lot of money. >> i think it's great they're trying to prevent a disaster like that again. >> reporter: after deciding against the public safety fire shut off in the north bay yesterday 33,500 pg&e customers in sonoma county, 10,500 in napa county remain on stand by for those shut offs if those conditions get worse. pg&e could still call for a shut off. they told me yesterday they would make a decision before noon yesterday.

c containers for restaurants. this ban would not include the styrofoam used in trays for raw meat or ice chests. vendors would be able to request a hardship exception for one year. ironically the county will not recommend these businesses use compostable containers instead. county staff says that those containers generate more greenhouse gases in a land field than polystyrene. if this ban passes it will go into effect on may 1st next year. the board is considering a half cent sales tax to fund transportation updates. if voters were to approve, the tax would raise $3.6 billion for transportation.

area. tropical storm karen is barreling towards puerto rico. it's packing 40 mile per hour winds. puerto rico still working to recover from the devastation from back to back hurricanes back in 2017. the long awaited memoire of the woman sexually assaulted by brock turner hits shelves today. she said she chose to hide her connection to brock turner fearing it would hurt her opportunity to become a writer. her book is titled "know my name." it recounts turner's assault at stanford and the legal turn out. national safety week is under way. it becomes with a reminder to never try to beat a train. this comes after a near miss that happened in santa clara yesterday. last night a train nearly hit a

person. it's not clear if the person was cited. $70 million that's what it cost for a reconstruction in the park and it's now finished. today cal tran will unveil the willow road interchange on highway 101. it's a key road used to get to facebook's headquarters. side walks and bicycle lanes were also added. i'm sure this will help with the congestion in that area, mike. >> it will. i've been traveling over there every week or so. i've been seeing the changes. it's a little confusing if you haven't been there for a while. look at that. we're unveiling it right now. there it is. i'm sure they have a much fancier ceremony. 101 slows a little bit through the area. we have a crew that hangs out north of there towards marsh.

have her exboyfriend heath green killed. police say she arranged with her then boyfriend to kill green. she was accused of losing custody of her children to him. her defense plans to present evidence he was killed in a foiled kidnapping crime. >> a follow up to what many call a heartless crime targeting elderly woman in the ross creek community. maybe you saw this video we showed you two weeks ago. it shows two women taking a woman's wallet right from her purse. she was shopping. she's bent overlooking for products. the video showed the pair casing the store for an hour before making their move. walnut creek police say the video led to tips on the suspect who investigators say live in stockton. officers arrested the two women this week. police say they used the victim's credit card for a
